Part ⅠReading Comprehension(共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)Directions: In this part there are four passages. Each passage is followed by four comprehension questions. Read the passage and answer the questions. Then mark your answer on the answer sheet.Passage OneQuestions1~5 are besed on the following passage.Under proper conditions, sound waves will be reflected from a hillside or other such obstruction. Sound travels at the rate of about one-fifth of mile per second. If the hill is eleven hundred feet away, it takes two seconds for the sound to travel o the hill and back. Thus, by timing the interval between a so und and its reflection (the echo), you can estimate the distance to an obstructi on.During word war 2 the British used a practical application of this principl e to detect German planes on their way to bomb London long before the ene my was near the target. They used radio waves instead of sound waves, since radio waves can penetrate fog and clouds. The outnumbered Royal Air Force (RAF) always seemed to the puzzled Germans to be lying in wait at the right time and never to be surprised. It was radio echoes more than anything else that won the Battle of Britain.Since the radio waves were used to tell the direction in which to send th e RAF planes and the distance to send them (their range of flight, in other w ords), the device was called radio directing and ranging, and from the initials t he word radar was coined. (files come from )1. Sound waves reflected from a hill can be used to estimate the ____.A. height of the hillB. speed of soundC. distance to the hillD. intensity of sound2. Practical application of this principle resulted in ____.A. new electronic instruments to planesB. a radio directing and ranging deviceC. new radio sets to RAF bombersD. an electronic detecting device3. Radar enabled the English to ____.A. detect German planes on their way to LondidnB. direct the outnumbered RAF planes effectivelyC. confuse German bomber pilotsD. both A and B4. It can be inferred from the passage that ____.A. Light waves could be used in a device similar to radarB. Radar was a practical application of a well-known principleC. Radar greatly increased the effectiveness of the Royal Air ToceD. Sound waves are reflected from a hillside under all conditions5. The author of this passage probably intended to explain ____.A. exactly what radar worksB. why the British used radio waves in their deviceC. what radar (word and device) came into beingD. what radar helped the British win the Battle of BritainPassage TwoQuestions 6~10 are based on the following passage. In general, the ancient Romans were a practical people. They cared less a bout philosophy and pure mathematics than did the Greeks. The Romans were the best of the ancient engineers and architects. They were brilliant students of Greek geometry and trigonometry (三角学) , and they applied their knowledge to the construction of fine bridges, roads, aqueducts (渠道) , and public buildings. They knew about the smelting of iro n ore, but they used the iron they produced mainly for spears, swords, and shi elds, rather than for building construction. While the Romans accomplished practical wonders, they did very little the oretical scientific thinking. Because of their frequent wars, many of their invent ions were no more than improvements in the design of Greek weapons with w hich they were familiar. There are two reasons for the Romans neglect of philosophy and pure mat hematics. First, they were apparently too busy conquering nearby nations and f orming them into a rapidly growing empire to waste time on abstract thinking. Secondly, they were handicapped (妨碍) by the rigidity of their numerical sys tem. (Try to multiply XI by LVII or to divide CXLIII by IX; it simply cannot be done with pencil and paper.) The Romans did all of their arithmetic on a n abacus, the ancient counterpart of the modern computing machine. Their num ber system discouraged the study of pure mathematics. 6. The author calls the Romans "practicat" because they ____.A. cared little about philosophyB. applied their knowledge to constructionC. saw the necessity to developing theoretical scienceD. studied the past and learned from it7. The ancient Romans did not concern themselves with ____.A. theoretical or abstract thoughtB. applied mathematicsC. studyingD. either A or C8. In construction, the Romans made extensive use of ____.A. iron oreB. geometry and trigonometryC. Greek mathematical thoughtD. both B and C9. Many Roman inventions were based on Greek weapons because the __ __.A.Greeks had superior weaponsB. Romans were involved in frequent warsC. Romans were not familiar with many types of weaponsD. Greeks proved themselves inspired inventors10. The author of this passage probably wanted to explain why ____.A. he considers the Romans a practical peopleB. Reading ComprehensionPassage 1 Among all the changes resulting from the massive entry of women into the work force, the transformation that has occurred in the women themselves is not the least important. They see themselves in a new light, for they have discovered that they can do just as well as men in any profession. Some of them have gone to the top, which has given women pride and self-confidence. Of course, the picture is not perfect. In the first place, a very large number of women do not even try to enter “male” profession s because they lack the necessary training or because they are not bold enough to take risks on new paths. For one woman executive or one woman judge, there are still countless typists and saleswomen who struggle through their day without any sense of victory. Besides, many of their braver sisters, who are daring to compete with men in higher fields, find that male opposition is still strong, and that society is still ready to explain a woman’s success by reasons that have nothi ng to do with her intelligence. Still, the fact remains that women are now free to enter any career that attracts them; the situation has improved, and the tide is not likely to turn back.31. The changes in the women have been brought about by ________.A. Women’s participation in work.B. some women who participate in important work.C. men’s encouragementD. lack of labor force32. Only a small number of women have entered “male” professions because ________.A. most women are content with less important work.B. many women lack courage or necessary trainingC. women are generally not as able as menD. most women cannot free themselves from housework.34. How does society view a woman’s success in her career?A. It proves that women are as intelligent as men.B. It has resulted from reasons other than her intelligence.C. Women are beginning to see themselves in a new light.D. Women should be encouraged to take up more jobs in higher fields.35. The author’s attitude about the women’s situation can be described a s ________.A. pessimisticB. indifferentC. optimisticD. conservativePassage 2The school obviously plays an important part in your education. But what part? Is it just a place—a place where you go to read your textbooks, to write, to hear people talking with you? Is it just an institution—an institution which is approved by the Government, which pays the salaries of your teachers, which issues periodic reports on you to your parents, which rewards you, which punishes you, which gives you an official grading for your year’s work?It is, certainly, both these things—a place and an institution. But it is neither as a place nor as an institution that the school contributes most to your education. It is as a gathering of people that the schools of greatest value to your educationally. It is people who bring a building to life, and people who determine the success or failure of an institution. So it is people who must rate highest in your assessment of the educational value of your school. There are lots of arguments about what education really is. But someone perceptive(有察觉力的)once said that “education is what’s left over when you have forgotten all that you’ve learned.” Education does not consist in remembering a particular theorem(定理)or date or definition or formula. It does not consist in getting a couple of credits and distinctions in the public exam at the end of the year. It does not consist in doing school work that enables you to join a particular social class later on. All these things are the by-products of education.Genuine education is deeper: it is more a part of yourself. It gives you certain attitude which are more permanent than selected facts. It gives you a training in reasoning. It gives you mental self-restraint: you get into the habit of looking at both sides of the question before coming to a decision. It gives you a respect for truth. It gives you a respect for people.36. According to the writer, the school is of greatest value to us educationally as ____.A. a place for us to have lessons and read booksB. an institution to issue periodic reports to our parentsC. an institution to assess our school workD. a gathering of people37. People must be considered as the most important factor when we assess the educational value of the school, because it is people who ________.A. build the schoolB. live in the schoolC. determined the success or failure of the schoolD. will leave us a deep impression38. According to the writer, real education _____________.A. helps students to get distinctions in examsB. continually assesses a student’s work throughout the academic yearC. pays no attention to official grading for a student’s workD. does not concentrate on the learning of facts39. According to the passage, teachers who want to give their students a true education will probably ______.A. not prepare their students for passing examinationB. ask students to do more school workC. encourage students to make contact with the other people in the schoolD. feel satisfied when students get credits for their work40. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?A. Real education consists in getting some distinction in public exams.B. Remembering theorems or definitions is only a by-product of education.C. Today people have the same opinion on education.D. Education is what can be easily forgotten.Passage 3Sleeping pills depress the brain and students who take them are less fit for study, or other work, or for driving a car, on the next day, than they would otherwise be. Try to keep up-to-date with your studies and get enough relaxation, especially just before going to bed. If you are fresh and free from worry, and have regular sleeping habits, you should not need sleeping pills. If you seem to take a long time in going to sleep, try to relax so that you can at least benefit from the rest. Let all your muscles relax. Some experts suggest that it is best to think only about relaxing. Alternatively to take your thoughts away from any current worry, you may prefer to recollect some pleasant experience. Pop pills stimulate the brain and some people take them to overcome a felling of tiredness, when they should be trying to relax and go to sleep. It is unwise to take pep pills, when you have already studied for long enough, to help you to stay awake and work longer. Extreme physical tiredness and mental depression may be felt when the effects of the pills wear off, so that they have the opposite to the intended effect. There may then be a temptation to take more pep pills to help overcome the feeling of exhaustion resulting from the previous dose. This isa vicious circle. It is best to plan your week so that you are wide awake all day and ready to sleep at bed-time.41. Sleeping pills ______.A. can help you get enough relaxationB. are only fit for adults but not for childrenC. may help free you from any worryD. depress your brain and make your work less effective42. The writer advises us _____.A. to take sleeping pills before going to bedB. to avoid taking any sleeping pillsC. to take sleeping pills to depress the brainD. to take sleeping pills to get enough relaxation43. It seems you will take a long time in going to sleep if you_____.A. can benefit from your restB. let your muscles relaxC. think only about relaxingD. think about you current worry44. Pep pills____.A. have the same effect as sleeping pillsB. have an effect opposite to that of sleeping pillsC. may help you enjoy a feeling of happinessD. may help you relax and go to sleep45. In the writer's opinion____.A. on no occasion should the students take .any pep pillsB. the students take pep pills only when they have studied for a long timeC. extreme physical tiredness may be felt if pep pills are takenD. it is better to take pep pills than sleeping pills before going to bedPassage 4The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject of discussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worked intensively. Thus, each person produces less and this .means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads, and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods. When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.46. A small population may mean _____.A. higher productivity, but a lower average incomeB. lower productivity, but a higher average incomeC. lower productivity and a lower average incomeD. higher productivity and higher average income47. According to the passage, a large population will provide a chance for developing _____.A. agricultureB. transport systemC. industryD. national economy48. In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if the birthrate _____A. goes upB. goes downC. remains stableD. is out of control49. According to the passage, slowly rising birthrate perhaps 'is good for ______A. a developing nationB. a developed nationC. every nation with a big populationD. every nation with a small population50. It is no easy job to carry out a general plan for birth control throughout the world because _______A. there are too many underdeveloped countries in the worldB. underdeveloped countries have low level of industrial developmentC. different governments have different views of the questionD. even developed countries may have complex problemsIII. Each passage is followed by some questions .For each of themthere are four choices marked [A], [B], [C] and [D]. You should decide on the best choice and mark the correspondingletter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.(30%)Passage 1It is incongruous that the number of British institutions offering MBA courses should have grown by 254 percentduring a period when the economy has been sliding into deeper recession. Optimists, or those given to speed, assumptions, might think it marvelous to have such a resource of business school graduates ready for the recovery.Unfortunately, there is now much doubt about the value of the degree not least among MBA graduates themselves, suffering as they are from the effects of recession and facing the prospect of shrinking management structures. What was taken some years ago as a ticket of certain admission to success is now being exposed to the scrutinyof cost-conscious employers who seek “can-dos” rather than “might-dos”, and who feel that academia has not beensufficiently appreciative of the needs of industry or of the employers’ possible contribution. It is curious, given the name of the degree, that there should be no league table for UK business schools; nounanimity about what the degree should encompass; and no agreed system of accreditation. Surely there is somethingwrong. One wonders where all the tutors for this massive infusion of business expertise came from and why all thismushrooming took place.Perhaps companies that made large investments would have been wiser to invest in already existing managers, perched anxiously on their own internal ladders. The Institute of Management’s 1992 survey, which revealed thateighty-one percent of managers thought they personally would be more effective if they received more training, suggests that this might be the case. There is, too, the fact that training alone does not make successful managers. They need the inherent qualifications. Of character; a degree of self-subjugation; and, above all, the ability tocommunicate and lead; more so now, when empowerment is a buzzword that is at least generating genuflexions, if nottotal conviction. One can easily think of people, some comparatively unlettered, who are now lauded captains of industry. We may, therefore, not need to be too concerned about the fall in applications for business school places, or even the doubtabout MBAs. The proliferation and subsequent questioning may have been an inevitable evolution. If theManagement Charter Initiative, now exploring the introduction of a senior management qualification, is successful, there will be a powerful corrective. We believe now that management is all about change. One hopes there will be some of that in relationshipbetween management and science within industry, currently causing concern and which is overdue for attention.No-one doubts that we need more scientists and innovation to give us an edge in an increasingly competitive world. Ifscientists feel themselves undervalued and under-used, working in industrial ghettos, that is not a promising auguryfor the future. It seems we have to resolve these misapprehensions between science and industry. Above all, we haveto make sure that management is not itself smug about its status and that it does not issue mission statements aboutcommunication without realizing that the essence of it is a dialogue. More empowerment is required and we shouldstrive to achieve it.21. What is the writer’s view in the reading passage?[A]He believes that there are too many MBAs [B] He believes that the degree is over-valued[C] He believes that standards are inconsistent [D] He believes that the degree has dubious value22.According to the passage, employers ______ .[A]feel that they have not been consulted sufficiently about their needs[B]consider that cost-consciousness is the most important qualification[C]are more concerned about the value of the degree than graduates themselves[D]feel that MBAs will not be necessary because of shrinking management structures23. According to the passage _____ .[A]managers need a degree and the ability to communicate[B]training need to be done in groups to be successful[C]managers today must have good communication and leadership skills[D]industrial managers do not need to write letters24. In the writer’s opinion _____ .[A]science increases competition [B]scientists are undervalued[C]the management of science needs reassessment [D]management feels smug about its status25. Which of the information is true according to the passage?[A]Most managers interviewed felt that their colleagues needed more training[B]Employers today are looking for proven experience rather than potential ability[C]The Management Charter Initiative is an attempt to standardize MBAs[D]Companies would have benefited more from recruiting MBAs rather than investing in their own staffPassage 2There are two methods of fighting, the one by law, the other by force; the first method is that of men, the secondof beasts; but as the first method is often insufficient, one must have recourse to the second. It is, therefore, necessaryfor a prince to know how to use both the beast and the man. This was covertly taught to the rulers by ancient writers, who relate how Achiiles and many others of those ancient princes were given Chiron the centaur to be brought up andeducated under his discipline. The parable of this semi-animal, semi-human teacher is meant to indicate that a princemust know how to use both natures, and that one without the other is not durable.A prince, being thus obliged to know well how to act as a beast, must imitate the fox, and the lion, for the lioncannot protect himself from traps, and the fox cannot defend himself from wolves. Those that wish to be only lions donot understand this. Therefore, a prudent ruler ought not to keep faith when by doing so it would be against hisinterest, and the reasons which made him bind himself no longer exist. If men were all good, this percept would not bea good one; but as they are bad, and would not observe their faith with you, so you are not bound to keep faith withthem. Nor have legitimate grounds ever failed a prince who wishes to show colorable excuse for the unfulfilment ofhis promise. Of this one could furnish an infinite number of examples, and also how many times peace has beenbroken, and how man promises rendered worthless, by the faithlessness of princes, and those that have best been ableto imitate the fox have succeeded best. But it is necessary to be able to disguise this character well, and to be a greatfeigner and dissembler, and men are so simple and so ready to obey present necessities, that the one who deceives willalways find those who allow themselves be to deceived.26.The writer does not believe that ____ .[A]the truth makes men free [B]people can protect themselves[C]princes are human [D]leaders have to be consistent27. “Prince” in the passage designates ____ .[A]anyone in power [B]elected officials [C]aristocrats [D]sons of kings28. The writer suggests that a successful leader must ____ .[A]be prudent and faithful [B]cheat and lie [C]have principle to guide his actions [D]follow the truthPassage 3The livelihood of each species in the vast and intricate assemblage of living things depends on the existence ofother organisms. This interdependence is sometimes subtle, sometimes obvious. Perhaps the most straightforwarddependence of one species on another occurs with parasites, organisms that live on or in other living things and derivenutrients directly from them. The parasitic way of life is widespread. A multitude of microorganisms ( includingviruses and bacteria ) and an army of invertebrates◆◆or creatures lacking a spinal column (including crustaceans, insects, and many different types of worms )◆◆make their livings directly at the expense of other creatures. In theface of this onslaught, living things have evolved a variety of defense mechanisms for protecting their bodies frominvasion by other organisms.Certain fungi and even some kinds of bacteria secrete substances known as antibiotics into their environment. These substances are capable of killing or inhibiting the growth of various kinds of bacteria that also occupy the area, thereby eliminating or reducing the competition for nutrients. The same principle is used in defense against invadersin other groups of organisms. For example, when attacked by disease-causing fungi or bacteria, many kinds of plantsproduce chemicals that help to ward off the invaders.Members of the animal kingdom have developed a variety of defense mechanisms for dealing with parasites.Although these mechanisms vary considerably, all major groups of animals are capable of detecting and reacting tothe presence of “foreign” cells. in fact, throughout the animal kingdom, from sponges to certain types of worms, shellfish, and all vertebrates ( creatures possessing a spinal column ) , there is evidence that transplants of cells orfragments of tissues into an animal are accepted only if they come from genetically compatible or closely relatedindividuals. The ability to distinguish between “self ” and “nonself ” , while present in all animals, is roost efficient amongvertebrates, which have developed an immune system as their defense mechanism. The immune system recognizesand takes action against foreign invaders and transplanted tissues that are treated as foreign cells.31. What does the passage mainly discuss?[A]How parasites reproduce. [B]How organisms react to invaders.[C]How antibiotics work to cure disease. [D]How the immune system of vertebrates developed.32. The word “intricate” in line 1 is closest in meaning to ____ .[A]difficult [B]widespread [C]critical [D]complex33. According to the passage, some organisms produce antibiotics in order to ____ .[A]prevent disease in humans [B]aid digestion[C]fight off other organisms [D]create new types of nutrients34. According to the passage, a transplant of tissue between genetically incompatible organisms will result in thetransplanted tissue ____ .[A]becoming a parasite [B]being treated as an invader[C]altering its genetic makeup [D]developing a new immune system35. According to the passage, the ability to distinguish between “self” and “nonself” enables vertebrates to ____ .[A]accept transplanted cells [B]detect and react to invasion[C]weaken their immune system [D]get rid of antibioticsPassage 4For reasons yet to be fully understood, one out of ten human beings in the world is left-handed, and from onegeneration to the next, this ratio is roughly preserved. As we know, left-handedness cuts across socioeconomic, ethnic, and gender lines. Yet throughout history prominent figures in science◆to say nothing of religion◆have identified inleft-handedness signs of viciousness or worse. In 1903, Italian physician Cesare Lombroso identified left-handednessas one of the degeneracy signs of the born criminals. Three years later, Dr. Wilhelm Fliess suggested thatleft-handedness was a reliable identification of homosexuality. And in 1937 British psychologist Cyril Burt declaredleft-handedness to be a mark of an ill-organized nervous system. As demonstrated by all the “therapeutic” coercion that left-handed children were subjected to during the first halfof the 20th century, these biases had more than just a theoretical impact. Yet even when this gauche predilection wasbeing discouraged, handism was certainly never taken as seriously as racism or sexism now is. Perhaps it’s thearbitrary nature of the trait that has militated against meaningful discrimination. After all, even when both parents areright-handed, there is still a 10 percent chance that they will bring a left-handed baby into the world. Moreover, awhite baby born in Scaresdale is just as likely to be left-handed as a black baby in Hardem. Hence when theleft-handed George Bush became President of the United States, it was hardly interpreted as a blow against prejudice.Nor was much attention paid to the fact that Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford were also southpaws.36. Left-handedness is ____ .[A]a thing that is cultivated [B]a thing that occurs by pure chance[C]a thing of genetic inheritance [D]a thing that occurs more in prominent figures37.According to the passage, left-handedness ____ .[A]is discouraged but not discriminated against[B]has caused discrimination as serious as sexism and racism[C]is a subject that has drawn more and more attention[D]is an advantage in running for public office38.The word “handism” in Line 3 Paragraph 2 most probably means ____ .[A]being skillful with one’s hands [B]quality of being convenient[C]discrimination against left-handed people [D]encouragement to use both hands instead of one39. The word “southpaws” at the end of the passage means ____ .[A]a boxer from the south [B]a politician from a southern state[C]a person with extraordinarily large hands [D]a left-handed person40. Judging from the context, Scarsdale is a place inhabited by ____ .[A]white people [B]black people [C]mixed races [D]rich peoplePassage 5There is widespread belief that the emergence of giant industries has been accomplished by an equivalent surgein industrial research. A recent study of important inventions made since the turn or the century reveals that more thanhalf were the product of individual inventors working alone. Independent of organized industrial research. Whileindustrial laboratories contributed such important products as nylon and transistors, independent inventors developedair conditioning, the automatic transmission, the jet engine, the helicopter, insulin, and streptomycin. Still otherinventions, such as stainless steel, television, sillicons, and plexiglass were developed through the combined efforts ofindividuals and laboratory teams.Despite these findings, we are urged to support monopoly power on the grounds that such power creates anenvironment supportive of innovation. We are told that the independent inventor, along with the small firm, cannotafford to undertake the important research needed to improve our standard of living while protecting our diminishingresources; that only the prodigious assets of the giant corporation or conglomerate can afford the kind of expenditurethat can produce the technological advances vital to economic progress. But when we examine expenditure forresearch, we find that of the more than $35 billion spent each year in this country, almost two-thirds is spent by thefederal government. More than half of this government expenditure is funneled into military research and productdevelopment, accounting for the enormous increase in spending in such industries as nuclear energy, aircraft, missiles, and electronics. There are those who consider it questionable that these defense-linked research projects will accountfor an improvement in the standard of living or, alternately, do much to protect our diminishing resources.Recent history has demonstrated that we may have to alter our longstanding conception of the process actuatedby competition. The price variable, once perceived as the dominant aspect of the competitive is now subordinate to thecompetition of the new product, the new business structure, and the new technology. While it can be assumed that in ahighly competitive industry not dominated by a single corporation, investment in innovation◆◆a risky andexpensive budget item◆◆might meet resistance from management and stockholders who might be more concerned with cost-cutting, efficient organization, and large advertising budget, it would be an egregious error to assume thatthe monopolistic producer should be equated with bountiful expenditures for research. Large-scale enterprises tend tooperate more comfortably in stable and secure circumstances, and their managerial bureaucracies tend to promote thestatus quo and resist the threat implicit in change. Furthermore, the firm with a small share of the market willaggressively pursue new techniques and different products, since with little vested interest in capital equipment orplant it is not deterred from investment in innovation. In some cases, where inter-industry competition is reduced oreven entirely eliminated, the industrial giants may seek to avoid capital loss resulting from obsolescence bydeliberately obstructing technological progress. The conglomerates are not, however, completely exempt from strong competitive pressures; there are instancesin which they, too, must compete, as against another industrial Goliath, and then their weapons may include largeexpenditures for innovation.41. According to the passage, important inventions of twentieth century ____ .[A]are not necessarily produced as a result of governmental support for military weapons research and development[B]came primarily from the huge laboratories of monopoly industries[C]were produced at least as frequently by independent inventors as by research teams[D]have greater impact on smaller firms than on conglomerates42. It is the author’s belief, as expressed or implied in the passage, that ____ .[A]monopoly power creates an environment supportive of innovation[B]government protection for military research will do much to protect our dwindling resources[C]industrial giants, with their managerial bureaucracies, respond more quickly to technological change[D]firms with a small share of the market will aggressively pursue innovations because they are old capital equipment43. Management and stockholders might be deeply concerned with cost-cutting rather than innovation if ____ .[A]their company is faced with strong competition in a field not dominated by one of the industrial giants[B]they are very stable and secure and hold a monopoly position in their industry[C]they are part of the military-industrial complex and are the recipients of federal funds for product development[D]they have produced some of the important inventions of this century44. It can be inferred from the passage that the author ____ .[A]has little confidence in the ability of monopolistic industry to produce the important inventions of the future[B]would rather see the federal government spend money on social services than on the defense establishment[C]favors a conservative approach to innovation and places trust in conglomerates to provide efficient production[D]while admitting that more than half the important inventions of the century were produced by independentinventors, feel that the future lies in the hands of giant industry45. The amount of money spent by the federal government for non-military research and product development is____ .[A]more than $36 billion each year [B]approximately $24 billion each year[C]more than $18 billion each year [D]less than $12 billion each year46. Which of the following statements is neither expressed nor implied in the passage?[A]Important inventions have been produced, in the past, by individuals as well as by corporate teams.[B]The federal government’s research funds are funneled into pure research as well as military research.[C]The development of the automatic transmission is not credited to organized industrial research.[D]Industrial giants may deliberately suppress innovations to avoid capital loss resulting from obsolescence.47. The author’s purpose in this passage is to ____ .[A]advocate an increase in government support of organized industrial research[B]point out a common misconception about the relationship between the extent of industrial research and the growthof monopolistic power in industry[C]describe the inadequacies of small firms in dealing with the important matter of research and innovation[D]show that America’s strength depends upon individual ingenuity and resourcefulness48. Which of the following best supports the thesis that industrial giants do not best serve to provide the innovationwe need to improve our standard of living and protect our diminishing resources?[A]More than half the important inventions made since the turn of the century were the product of individualinventors working alone, independent of organized industrial research.[B]More than half the government expenditure for research goes to military research.[C]The missile industry is one that benefits from government spending for research.[D]Large-scale enterprises tend to operate more comfortably in stable and secure circumstances.49. The industrial giants may seek to avoid capital loss resulting from obsolescence by deliberately obstructingtechnological progress. The sentence means ____ .[A]that the industrial giants may seek to avoid capital loss because of obsolescence by purposely preventingtechnological progress[B]that the industrial giants may seek to avoid capital loss caused by obsolescence by purposely promotingtechnological progress[C]that the industrial giants may seek to avoid capital loss caused by obsolescence by deliberately spending moremoney on technological progress[D]that the industrial giants may seek to avoid capital loss caused by obsolescence by purposely investing moremoney on innovation50. According to the author, the conglomerates may spend large amount on innovation because ____ .[A]they are completely exempt from strong competitive pressures[B]they are supportive of innovation[C]they can afford to undertake the important research needed[D]they, too, must compete against another industrial GoliathPart III Translation (20%) (40 minutes)Section ADirections: Translate the following paragraph into English. Write your Chinese version on AnswerSheet.(10%)Like the population explosion, the scientific and technological revolution began to pick up speed slowly duringthe eighteenth century. And this ongoing revolution has also suddenly accelerated exponentially. For example, it isnow an axiom in many fields of science that more new and important discoveries have taken place in the last ten yearsthan in the entire previous history of science. While no single discovery has had the kind of effect on our relationshipto the earth that nuclear weapons have had on our relationship to warfare, it is nevertheless true that taken together, they have completely transformed our cumulative ability to exploit the earth for sustenance➲➲making theconsequences of unrestrained exploitation every bit as unthinkable as the consequences of unrestrained nuclear war.Part IV Writing 30% (60 minutes)Section ADirections: you are advised to write an essay more than 100 words. ”Nowadays people spend too much of their sparetime indoors”. The female sea horses lay the eggs, but unlike other creatures, it's the males that give birth to the young.Male sea horses have a fold of skin on their bellies that forms a pocket, called a brood pouch (育儿袋) . During the breeding season, the sea horse's pouch swells to receive eggs. A female sea horse lays up to 200 eggs at a time in the pouch. Then she swims off, leaving her male partner to care for the developing eggs and give birth to young sea horses. The female will return every day to check on her mate and the eggs, but she doesn't stay long, nor does she take part in the birth. It takes about six weeks for the eggs in the male's pouch to develop. During this time the male avoids open water and hides in sea grass. His big pouch makes it difficult for him to swim, so the male often uses his tail to grasp a piece of sea grass. Firmly gripping the grass, he will stay perfectly still for hours or even days. The male sea horse will change his color to blend with his surroundings and avoid being seen by eaters who will try to eat him or poke holes in his pouch to get the eggs. The eggs hatch inside the male's pouch. When the babies begin moving around, the male sea horse knows it's time for them to be born. He grabs a sea grass stem with his tail and begins rocking, bending his body back and forth. This causes the opening to enlarge until it is wide enough for the first baby sea horse to shoot out. The father sea horse continues rocking, bending, and stretching his body so that the rest of the babies can be born. Sometimes he has to press his pouch against a rock or some stiff seaweed to force the young out.Usually it takes two days for the father sea horse to give birth to all his young. He is very tired when it's over.36. Which fact does the author want you to remember most?A. Baby sea horses are born in groups of five or more.B. The female sea horse lays up to 200 eggs at a time.C. The male sea horse gives birth to the young.D. The female will return every day to check on the eggs.37. What important part does the female sea horse play in having babies?A. Laying the eggs.B. Checking the eggs.C. Protecting the eggs.D. Hatching the eggs.38. To protect himself and his eggs, the male sea horse does all the following EXCEPT .A. changing his colorB. gripping a piece of grassC. staying motionlessD. enlarging his pouch39. The author suggests when sea horse babies are ready to be born .A. the male sea horse seems very happyB. it is difficult for them to come outC. the female sea horse joins the maleD. they need large space in the pouch40. What can you learn from the article about giving birth to baby sea horses?A. It is most dangerous for the female.B. It happens only once every ten years.C. It is hard work for the male.D. It happens only in the deepest part of the ocean.Passage TwoA scientist who does research in economic psychology and who wants to predict the way in which consumers will spend their money must study consumer behavior. He must obtain data both on resources of consumers and on the motives that tend to encourage or discourage money spending. If an economist was asked which of the three groups borrow most ---people with rising incomes, stable incomes or declining incomes ---he would probably answer: those with declining income. Actually, in the years 1947-1950, the answer was: people with rising incomes. People with declining incomes were next and people with stable incomes borrowed the least. This shows us that traditional ideas about earning and spending are not always reliable.Another traditional idea is that if people who have money expect prices to go up, they will hurry to buy. If they expect prices to go down, they will postpone buying. But research surveys have shown that this is not always true. The typical attitude was expressed by the wife of a mechanic in an interview at a time of rising prices, "In a few months," she said, "we'll have to pay more for meat and milk; we'll have less to spend on other things." Her family had been planning to buy a new car but they postponed this purchase. Furthermore, the rise in prices that has already taken place may arouse resentment and buyer's resistance may be aroused. This is shown by the following typical comment: "I just don't pay these prices; they are too high."The investigations mentioned above were carried out in America. Investigations conducted at the same time in Great Britain, however, produced results that were more in agreement with traditional ideas about saving and spending patterns. The condition most conducive (有助于) to spending appears to be price stability. If prices have been stable and people consider that they are reasonable, and they are likely to buy. Thus, it appears that the common business policy of keeping stable prices is based on a correct understanding of consumer psychology.41. It can be inferred that to predict how consumers will spend their money, one should .A. rely on traditional approachesB. try to encourage or discourage consumersC. carry out investigationsD. do researches in a laboratory first42. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2?A. Consumers' behavior in time of price increase.B. Price increase stimulates people to hasten to buy things.C. What consumers normally buy when they expect prices to go up?D. Consumers' attitude towards price change.43. According to the survey, if Englishmen expect prices to go up, they will .A. spend lessB. buy moreC. buy only what they needD. postpone buying44. From the results of the surveys, the writer concludes that .A. maintaining stable prices is a correct business policyB. the saving and spending patterns in Great Britain are better than those in AmericaC. the consumers always expect prices to remain stableD. consumers should adapt to the change of prices45. Which of the following statements is always TRUE according to the surveys mentioned in the passage?A. Consumers will put off buying things if they expect price to decrease.B. Consumer behavior is influenced by the price condition.C. Consumers will spend their money quickly if they expect prices to increase.D. Traditional ideas about earning and spending are reliable.Passage ThreeThe youthful addiction to mobile phones that dismays so many parents and teachers could be providing a big benefit that "mobiles" could be turning teenagers away from tobacco.Smoking has declined among British teenagers from 30% in 1996 to 23% in 1999 while ownership of the ubiquitous ( 到处存在的) mobile phones among 15-17-year-olds rose rapidly to 70% by August 2000.Adults say their mobile phones are the only way they can keep in touch with work, family and friends. But for teenagers the pocket-sized devices are smart, stylish and adult. And like cigarettes, they are important in socializing. Pre-paid cards for mobiles a popular alternative to monthly bills could be consuming teens' pocket money that might otherwise go for cigarettes. Anne Charlton, professor of the University of Manchester, has even noted a similarity between mobile marketing and tobacco campaigns. "Mobile phones are marketed in a similar way to cigarettes with a sales pitch that focuses on self-image, identity and confidence," she said in a statement. Clive Bates and Anne Charlton stressed that at this stage it is only a hypothesis (假设) . But they believe it is a plausible one.The health hazards of smoking are well documented but the potential risks of using a mobile phone are still uncertain. Some researchers have suggested that they can cause brain damage and that the young are particularly easy to be affected. "With smoking you have a very visible body count. In the UK there are about 120,000 ---in the world there are about four million deaths a year from smoking-related diseases," Bates said.46. By "mobiles could be turning teenagers away from tobacco" in Paragraph 1, the author means ______.A. teenagers are probably more addicted to mobile phones than smokingB. teenagers do not carry tobacco with them when they travel by carC. teenagers usually smoke a lot when they drive automobilesD. teenagers have to stop smoking when they use their mobile phones47. The ownership of mobile phones among teenagers went up rapidly mainly because .A. teenagers know nothing about the danger of using mobile phonesB. mobile phones are getting more important in socializingC. teenagers have realized the danger of smokingD. mobile phones are much cheaper than they used to be48. According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Mobile phones and cigarettes are marketed in completely different ways.B. The declining of smoking and the rising of mobiles are just a coincidence.C. Adults and teenagers think differently about mobile phones.D. Many parents and teachers welcome the youthful addiction to mobile phones.49. The underlined word “plausible” in Paragraph 3 most probably means .A. strangeB. unreasonableC. unbelievableD. reasonable50. Concerning the disadvantages of using mobile phones, the author implies that .A. people know little about the health hazards of mobiles nowB. mobiles have fewer health hazards than smoking doesC. people are certain about the health hazards of mobilesD. mobiles are a big waste of money for teenagers at schoolPassage FourA person may have an idea about himself that will prevent him from doing good work. He may have the idea that he is not capable of it. A child may think he is stupid because he does not understand how to make the most of his mental faculties, or he may accept another person's mistaken estimate of his ability. Older people may be handicapped by the mistaken belief that they are incapable of learning anything new because of their age.A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because he feels that it would be useless. He won't go at a job with the confidence necessary for success. He is therefore likely to fail, and the failure will strengthen his belief in his incompetence.Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience which illustrates this. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic. His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him. In this way, they too developed the idea, "Isn't it too bad that Alfred can't do arithmetic?" He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try, and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected. One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected the idea that he couldn't do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. His new found confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination and purpose, and he soon became extraordinarily good at arithmetic. This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply one's ability, lack of confidence and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability.51. According to the passage, which statement is NOT true?A. A child may accept another person's underestimate of his ability.B. A child may think he is too young to make the most of his mental faculties.C. A person may have the idea that he is incapable of doing good work.D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage oneQuestions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage. In the past, a city’s major shopping district was in its downtown area. People could get downtown more easily than they could get to other parts of the city. Before the 1960s, the best way to travel in a city was on a street-car, a subway, a railroad, or an elevated train. All of these ran on tracks that led downtown. As our cities grew outward, people living far from the center of town needed a place they could drive to quickly. Driving downtown was difficult. Finding a parking space downtown was something almost impossible. People also needed a shopping place where they could park easily. To meet the shopping needs of people living in the suburbs, groups of businesses moved farther out, too. Today, most suburbs have large shopping centers.Modern and well-planned shopping centers are built on large areas of ground. They have even more space for parking than they do for stores. The shopping centers have many different kinds of stores. Often, the shoppers can do all their shopping in one place. The very large shopping centers have malls which make shopping pleasant. The mall is an area between stores set aside for walking. Shoppers can stroll(漫步)from store to store and enjoy beautiful fountains, statues, and plants. There are benches so that shoppers may rest. Some shopping centers have malls with roofs that protect shoppers from the weather outside.21. The first paragraph tells us that in the past ________.A) few people drove cars to do shoppingB) it was convenient to do shopping downtownC) people liked to live in downtown areasD) street-cars were the main vehicle within a city22. Why did some businesses move from downtown to the suburbs?。

江西专升本统考英语历年真题(2001-2010)

2001年江西省“专升本”英语统一考试试卷(120分钟)Part ⅠListening comprehension (20 points)(略)Part ⅡReading Comprehension (30 points)Directions:In this section there are four passages. Each of them is followed by some questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A),B),C),and D). You should decide on the best choice andmark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions 21-25 are based on the following passage.By far the most common snake in Britain is the adder (奎蛇). In Scotland, in fact, there are no other snakes at all. The adder is also the only British snake with a poisonous bite. It can be found almost anywhere, but prefers sunny hillsides and rough open country, including high ground. In Ireland there are no snakes at all. Most people regard snake bites as a fatal (致命的) misfortune, but not all bites are serious, and very few are fatal. Sometimes attempts at emergency treatment turn out to be more dangerous than the bite itself, with amateurs (外行人) heroically, but mistakenly, trying do-it-yourself surgery (手术) and other unnecessary measures. All snakes have small teeth, so that all snakes can bite, but only the bite of the adder presents any danger. British snakes are shy animals and far more frightened of you than you could possibly be of them. The adder will attack only if it feels threatened, as can happen if you take it by surprise and step on it accidentally, or if you try to catch it or pick it up, which it dislikes intensely. If it hears you coming, it will normally get out of the wa6y as quickly as it can, but adders cannot move very rapidly and may attack before moving if you are very close. The effect of a bite varies considerably. It depends upon several things, one of which is the body-weight of the person bitten. The bigger the person, the less harmful the bite is likely to be, which is why children suffer far more seriously from snake bites than adults. A healthy person will also have better resistance against the poison.Very few people actually die from snake bites in Britain, and though these bites can make some people very ill, there are probably just as many cases of bites having little or no effect, as there are of serious illness.21. Adders are most likely to be found _______.A) in wider parts of Britain and IrelandB) in Scotland but nowhere elseC) on wild land through BritainD) in the countryside in England22. If you are with someone who is bitten by an adder, you should ______.A) try to catch the snakeB) not treat the bite yourselfC) not worry too much about the victimD) operate him as soon as possible23. We are told that adders _______.A) normally friendly towards peopleB) unlikely to bite except in self-defenseC) likely to attack people whenever they see themD) not afraid of human beings24. If an adder hears you approaching, it will usually ______.A) move out of your pathB) take no notice of you at allC) disappear very quicklyD) wait until you are close and then attack25. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A) Adders are more likely to attack children than adults.B) The adder prefers to bite a person with a heavy body.C)The danger of adder bites is different from person to person.D)In most cases adder bites are more serious than other illnesses.Questions 26-30 are based on the following passages.Only the government can ensure that the American people have clean air and pure water. Congress must pass laws to stop manufacturers from polluting the air and water with the waste from their factories.Unless anti-pollution standards are enforced for all, companies that care about a clean environment will go out of business. For example, if Automobile Company X spends money to put an air-pollution control device on their automobiles, th eir cars will be more expensive than the cars produced by another company. People who don‟t have the extra money or who don‟t care about pollution will not buy the more expensive cars. Automobile Company X will gobankrupt (破产); that is, it won‟t make enou gh money to pay its workers and to buy materials. It will then go out of business. Of course, no automobile company will make itself go bankrupt on purpose, and the pollution of the land and air and water will go on.But if the government says that all automobile manufacturers must make cars with air-pollution control devices, the cost of all manufacturers will be equal. So the government cannot let companies decide whether or not they want to stop pollution. The government must force manufacturers to clean up the environment by setting anti-pollution standards for everyone.26. If a company cares about a clean environment while others don‟t, it will have to _______.A) change the anti-pollution standards for its productsB) sell its products at a more expensive priceC) buy materials at a higher priceD) pay more money to its workers27. According to the writer, anti-pollution standards ensure that ______.A) no manufacturer will go bankrupt for spending money on pollution controlB) less money will be spent in buying pollution control devicesC) manufacturers know how to control pollution more effectivelyD)all manufacturers have to take measures to control pollution29. The purpose of this passage is _______.A) to describe how a company can go bankruptB) to emphasize the urgent need of cleaning up the environmentC) to stress the importance of the government‟s role In preventing pollutio nD) to tell how difficult it is to keep the environment free from air-pollution30. What can be inferred from thin passage?A) Companies have not been given an equal chance to develop their business.B) A company will go bankrupt if its cars have to be installed with pollution control devices.C) The US government has not set up standards on pollution control for car producers.D) It is necessary to persuade producers to take effective pollution control measure.Questions 31-35 are based on the following passages.Large-scale production in a large market brings advantages: mass production helps to reduce the manufacturing costs of consumer goods and the single market also makes it easier to specialize. Together, these two considerations improve businesses‟ chance of making profit.Within the single market, the Community (欧共体) is making clearly strict European industrial standards which help European industry compete with imported products and conquer new markets, as well as making high-quality products available to the consumer. The European commission‟s competition policy serves to ensure that the common interest prevails over individual business interests. At the same time, it is flexible enough to allow co-operation between small firms.Business are being encouraged to operate outside the country in which they are based by measures designed to ensure that they are no longer taxed twice for doing so. The days when taxes are an obstacle to Europe-wide business operation will soon be gone.In addition to cre ating a favorable business environment, the community‟s industrial policy is also concerned with developing specific strategies. The objective is to carry out long-term plans to develop industries such as the electronics industry, information technology, biotechnology (生物技术) and textiles. These measures, at national and community level, will influence the quality of products, the technology used to manufacture them, the training the workforce receives, and the development of new outlets. In short, a whole range of instruments will be created to protect the future of European technology. These projects will require extra funding at Community level for training, research and development and communications networks. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.America put more people in prison in the 1990s than in any decade in its history. That started a debate over the wisdom of spending billons of dollars to keep nearly 2 million people locked up. According to statistics, the United States ends 1999 with 1,983,084 men and women in prisons. That shows an increase nearly 840,000 prisoners during the 1990s and makes the United States the country with the highest prison population in the world. With the cost of housing a prisoner at about $20,000 a year, the cost in 1999 keeping all these prisoners behind bar is about $39 billion. Some experts argue that the money is well spent, saying the cost of keeping prisoners behind back doesn‟t seem much in comparison to the cost of crime to society. 江西省专升本英语考试真题及答案

江西省专升本英语考试真题及答案全文共6篇示例,供读者参考篇1English Test for Jiangxi Students to Upgrade to UniversityHi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm in 5th grade. I have an older brother who is studying at a vocational college. He really wants to become a university student and get a bachelor's degree. But to do that, he has to take a big English test called the Jiangxi Province Upgrading Examination. Wow, that's a long name!My brother has been studying really hard for this important test. He showed me some practice questions and they look pretty difficult to me. But I'll try my best to explain them simply, like how I would to my little sister. Here are some sample questions from the reading section:The first one says: "John went to the park. He saw birds singing in the trees. 'This is a beautiful day,' he thought." Then it asks: "What did John see at the park?" The right answer is B) birds singing in the trees. That one wasn't too bad!But here's a harder one: "The solar system consists of the sun and everything that orbits around it, including planets, dwarf planets, moons, asteroids and comets. Which of the following is NOT part of our solar system?" The answers are: A) Earth B) The Moon C) Alpha Centauri D) Mars. Hmmm, I've never heard of Alpha Centauri before. I'll have to ask my brother about that!Okay, now for the writing section. One of the prompts is: "Some students get jobs during their free time while others only focus on their studies. Which approach do you think is better and why?" Woah, that's a long question! I'd probably write something like "I think students should not work because they need to spend their time studying hard to get good grades." But I'm just a little kid, so what do I know? My brother will have to write a much longer and better response. The listening section looks really challenging too. You have to listen to recordings and answer questions about the main ideas and details. Like if they played "The boy rode his bicycle to school every day. One morning, he got a flat tire on his way." It might ask "How did the boy normally get to school?" and you'd have to bubble in C) by bicycle. Listening is hard for me because my little sister is always talking nonstop! Now for the hardest part - speaking! One question says "Some families now have only one child due to government policies. Do you think this is a good thing or a bad thing? Why?" Oh no, I'd be so nervous trying to give a whole speech in English about that topic. I'd probably just say "Umm, I don't know...having one kid is okay I guess?" Then I'd run out of things to say. Speaking in front of people is scary!Math is hard for me too, but my brother is pretty good at it. He showed me a math question that said "If one bag of rice costs 2 and a family needs 5 bags for the month, how much will they have to pay?" I worked it out...2 x 5 = 10, so the answer is 10. I was proud of myself for that one!Wow, I have a whole new respect for how difficult this upgrading exam is after seeing those sample questions. My brother must be one of the smartest people ever to ace a test like that. I'll be cheering him on for sure!Well, that's all I can really say about the Jiangxi English test. Writing this essay has made me realize how lucky I am to just be a kid without those kinds of huge responsibilities. I'll leave the really hard stuff to my brilliant older brother. Ganbatte, bro!篇2The Big Fancy English TestHi there! My name is Little Wang and I'm 8 years old. I live in Nanchang, the capital of Jiangxi Province. My big sister Xiaomei just took a really important English test called the Jiangxi Provincial Exam for upgrading from junior college to a university degree. She studied sooooo hard for it. I'm going to tell you all about the big fancy test she took!First of all, the test was super duper long. It had listening, reading, writing, translation, and speaking sections. The listening part had conversations, news reports, lectures and more that Xiaomei had to listen to carefully. Then she had to answer multiple choice questions about what she heard. There were different accents like British English, American English, and even Australian English! Xiaomei said the listening was pretty tough.Next up was the reading section. This had all kinds of passages like news articles, stories, advertisements, and academic writings. After reading each one, Xiaomei had to answer detailed comprehension questions to show she understood the main ideas and important details. Some of the passages were crazy long, over 1000 words! Xiaomei had to read quickly but carefully. The reading questions were not easy either. Then came the writing section, which Xiaomei said was one of the hardest parts. She had to write different kinds of essays, like an argument essay, a response essay, and even a data analysis essay where she looked at charts and graphs. The essays all had to be organized properly with clear main ideas and supporting details. Xiaomei also had to use advanced vocabulary and sentence structures. Phew, writing academic essays in English is no joke! After the writing section was the translation part. Xiaomei had to translate passages from English into Chinese and from Chinese into English. This tested if she could accurately translate back and forth between the two languages on different topics like science, business, and culture. My sister said the translations were super tricky because you had to know specific vocabulary for different subjects. Finally, there was the speaking section where Xiaomei had to answer questions and give presentations in English. She had to speak clearly with good pronunciation, intonation, and fluency. Xiaomei also had to organizeher ideas logically when giving longer responses. Talking smoothly in English without stopping is not easy! When Xiaomei finished the whole test, she was exhausted! It took her over 6 hours to complete everything. She had been studying English grammar, vocabulary, reading strategies, writing techniques, and more for months to prepare. The Jiangxi Provincial English Exam is seriously no joke. But why did Xiaomei have to take such a crazy difficult test? Well, she wants to upgrade her associate's degree from junior college to a full bachelor's degree from a university. In China, this means taking an extra exam like the Jiangxi one to prove her English skills are good enough for university study. Lots of junior college students take these exams to continue their education. So did Xiaomei pass the big fancy test? We'll have to wait a few weeks to get her score! She felt pretty good about most of it, but there were some parts that stumped her for sure. No matter what, I'm really proud of my sister for working so hard. Even if she has to retake it, I know she'll keep trying until she achieves her dream.Studying English is super important but also super difficult, as Xiaomei can tell you! There's so much vocabulary to memorize, grammar rules to learn, and skills to practice like reading, writing, listening and speaking. But English can also open up tons ofamazing opportunities, like going to a great university or traveling the world.I'm only 8 but I've already started learning English too. Who knows, maybe oneday I'll be taking the huge Jiangxi English test just like Xiaomei! For now, I'll just focus on the basics. But I have a new appreciation for how talented my big sis is and how hard she's working towards her goals. You go, Xiaomei!Well, that's the scoop on the big fancy Jiangxi Provincial English Exam from this little kid. It's a monster of a test, but one that could change your whole future if you pass. I'll let you know if my sister made the grade! Study hard, and maybe I'll see you at university someday.篇3Wow, the Jiangxi Province English Exam Seems Really Hard!Hi friends! Did you know there's this really tough English test that some students have to take in Jiangxi Province? It's called the Jiangxi Province English Exam for upgrading from junior college to university. I learned about it from my older cousin who is studying at a junior college. She has to take this big exam if she wants to get her bachelor's degree from a university. It sounds super difficult! From what I understand, the exam covers listening, reading, writing, and speaking - all in English of course. My cousin says the listening section is brutally hard. They play recordings of conversations and lectures, and you have to answer detailed questions proving you understood everything. There are even clips with different English accents from around the world. How confusing! The reading part doesn't sound much easier. You have to read long passages on academic topics and answer comprehension questions. My cousin mentioned something about analyzing the author's viewpoint and writing a critical response essay. That's the kind of stuff university students do, not junior college kids like her!But here's the really scary part - the writing section. Test takers have to write a logically organized essay of over 400 words...in English! They have to develop an argument, provide examples, and use proper grammar, vocabulary and style. My hand gets tired just thinking about writing that much. How do they have time to translate their thoughts from Chinese to English while writing?Oh, and then there's the speaking portion at the very end. Can you imagine how nervous you'd feel? You have to answerquestions, describe images, and have an entire conversation...all while being recorded. My cousin said you get deductions for bad pronunciation, incoherent responses, or long awkward pauses. No pressure at all!Honestly, I'm in awe of anyone who can pass this incredibly difficult test. My English skills are okay for an elementary student, but nowhere near good enough to handle tasks like that. I'll be lucky if I can watch a movie without subtitles by the time I'm in junior college! The exam is supposed to assess whether students are ready for the higher academic demands of a university education. But yeesh, it sounds more like a torture device designed by an evil English teacher. Lots of junior college students unfortunately fail on their first try and have to retake it.I asked my cousin how she's preparing and her study regimen is insane. She has private English tutoring sessions multiple times per week. She watches English movies and TV shows constantly, taking notes on vocabulary and grammar. She reads English books and newspapers daily to build her comprehension skills. She even does speaking practice on video calls with a conversation partner in America! On top of the exam prep, she still has to keep up with her regular junior college coursework too. She says she has almost no free time and stays up late every night. My cousin used to be so relaxed and fun, but now she seems stressed and anxious all the time. I really hope all her hard work pays off and she passes on the first attempt. If she does well, universities will evaluate her total exam score along with her junior college grades to decide if they'll accept her. The higher her score, the better her chances of getting into a prestigious university program. So there's a ton of pressure to perform your absolute best.I don't know how my cousin and other Jiangxi students juggle it all. The exam itself sounds incredibly challenging, let alone balancing it with coursework and exam prep. They must be incredibly determined and have unreal English abilities. Or maybe they're just a little crazy!Either way, I have a newfound respect for anyone who can conquer the terrifying Jiangxi Province English Exam. If I'm still struggling with basic English verb tenses when I'm their age, there's no way I'd want to face that massive test. I'll just stick to writing shorter essays and stories, you know, at an elementary level!Good luck to all the exam warriors out there. You're braver than the Chinese troops who fought the Japanese invasion during World War II! Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. But you get what I mean - you've got to be tough to pass that crazy English test. I'll be cheering you on from the elementary school sidelines!Sample Exam Questions and Answers:ListeningQuestion: What method does the professor suggest for reducing test anxiety?A) MeditationB) Positive self-talkC) Eating a nutritious dietD) Getting enough sleepAnswer: BReadingQuestion: According to the passage, which of the following is NOT a contributing factor in the author's main argument?A) Statistical data on climate patternsB) Evidence from ancient tree ring recordsC) Increased human consumption of fossil fuelsD) Effects of deforestation in tropical rainforestsAnswer: AWriting Sample Essay Prompt: Some people believe that technological innovations have had a primarily negative impact on modern society, while others argue that the positives outweigh the negatives. My name is Xiaoming and I'm 10 years old. I just took the biggest English test of my life - the University Promotion Exam for Jiangxi Province. It was super tough but also really exciting! The test had four sections - listening, reading, writing, and speaking. I was pretty nervous at first, but then I remembered all the hard work I put into studying English with my teacher Ms. Wang. She's the best teacher ever and really prepared us well. The listening section was first. We had to listen to recordings and answer multiple choice questions about what we heard. There were conversations between people as well as longer lectures on topics like science and history. I tried to listen super carefully and write down any key words or dates I recognized. After listening came the reading section - my favorite! We had passages to read about all sorts of cool subjects like space exploration, endangered animals, and ancient civilizations. The questions asked us to identify main ideas, make inferences, and give evidence from the texts. Reading is my strongest skill in English so I felt pretty confident working through those passages. Then came the writing section which was a bit scary. We had to write an essay responding to a prompt about an important issue facing the world today. I chose to write about environmental protection because it's something I really care about. We've learned a lot about things like recycling, reducing pollution, and protecting habitats for animals. I made sure to organize my essay into clear paragraphs with examples and reasons supporting my main points. Finally, there was the speaking section where we had to answer questions and give our opinions verbally. The test assistant asked me questions about my hobbies, future goals, and what I'd do if I became a teacher. It was kind of fun getting to just chat in English, but I did have to think carefully about how to express my thoughts clearly. After what felt like an eternal exam session, it was finally over!I was tired but felt proud for giving it my absolute best effort. My parents took me out for dumplings that night to celebrate.A few weeks later, I got my scores back...and I passed! I'll be able to attend an amazing university prep program to get ready for applying to top schools. All that hard work mastering things like grammar, vocabulary, comprehension skills, and essay writing really paid off. Some of the reading passages on the test were about explorers who made amazing journeys into the unknown. Taking this huge exam kind of felt like my own exploration into the world of academics and English mastery. While it was challenging, I'm so glad I embarked on the adventure! My friends and I have been celebrating by teaching each other new English phrases we learned from the test. Studying hard but also trying to make it fun - that's my recipe for success when it comes to English!I can't wait to see what other exciting English challenges and opportunities await me in the years ahead. But for now, I'm just feeling relieved to have this major test behind me. Hopefully some of my experiences can help encourage other students working towards their English dreams too!Never give up, keep studying, and make sure to get a good night's sleep before any big exams. Wisdom from a cultured10-year-old English student! Let me know if you need any other tips.篇5My Big English Test AdventureHi everyone! My name is Xiaoming and I'm 9 years old. I just had the craziest experience taking a really important English test called the Jiangxi Province Exam for upgrading from junior college to a full university degree. It was super difficult but also really exciting! Let me tell you all about my big adventure. It all started a few months ago when my mom and dad told me I would be taking this huge English exam. At first, I was really nervous because English is definitely not my best subject in school. I much prefer math, science, and gym class. But my parents explained how passing this test would allow me to go to a great university later on, so I knew I had to try my very best.To get ready, I studied English for hours every single day after school instead of playing outside with my friends. My amazing teacher Mrs. Wang helped me a ton by going over all the kinds of questions that would be on the test – reading comprehension, writing essays, listening to conversations, you name it. She's so smart and patient in explaining everything clearly. Finally, the big day arrived! I was feeling a mixture of excited and scared as my dad dropped me off at the huge test center. There were so many students there, it looked like an anthill with everyone rushing around. The proctors led us into theauditorium where we would take the exam. I gulped as I saw all the rows of desks laid out. This was really happening! The first section was listening, which I was quite worried about. But then I realized the conversations and instructions were spoken slowly and clearly. Phew! As long as I focused hard, I could understand most of it. The reading comprehension was pretty hard though, with all these crazy long passages. My eyes started crossing after a while from staring so intently at the questions. We got a break for lunch, which was a couple of hours of relaxation time. Some students looked totally stressed, but not me! I just hung out, ate my snacks, and didn't think about the test at all. My dad always says you have to stay cool, calm, and confident. No point in freaking out over something that's already happening! The writing section came after lunch and that was the hardest part for sure. We had to write a whole essay analysis about the environmental benefits of wind power versus coal power plants. I'm just a fourth grader - what do I know about that?? I ended up just kind of faking it by using lots of big words and scientific-sounding sentences that didn't really make any sense. Hopefully the graders couldn't tell!At long last, the test finally finished in the late afternoon. I was exhausted but felt such a huge sense of relief and accomplishment. No matter how I scored, I could be proud of myself for powering through such a challenging exam at my age. My parents were so happy with me when I got picked up. We celebrated by going out for my favorite dumplings!A couple of months later, the results came in the mail. I...passed I'm officially eligible to go to a regular 4-year university after graduating junior college. My parents were jumping around, cheering and hugging me tightly. All those hours of hard work and sacrifice had paid off in a big way.So that's the story of my wild adventure with the Jiangxi English exam. Was it hard? You bet. Did I struggle and want to give up sometimes? Absolutely. But I never quit, and in the end, I conquered that monster of a test through perseverance and believing in myself. I don't know what my future holds, but one thing is for certain - no standardized test will ever intimidate me again after this! I'm ready to take on the world.篇6The Big Grown-Up English TestWow, you guys won't believe what my big sister Amy just told me! She said she has to take this huge, mega, crazy-difficult English test soon. It's called the Jiangxi Province Test for Upgrading from Junior College to University. That's a really long name, so I'll just call it the Big Grown-Up English Test.Amy has been studying at a junior college for the last two years after graduating from high school. But she says junior college is just the first step, and that to get an even better job she needs a bachelor's degree from a university. The problem is, she can't just apply to a university straight from junior college. Nope, she first has to pass this Big Grown-Up English Test!I asked Amy to tell me all about the test, and here's what she said: The test has two main parts - listening and reading. For the listening part, they play audio recordings and you have to answer multiple choice questions about what you heard. For the reading part, you read some long passages and then also answer multiple choice questions.Amy made a really worried face and said the reading passages are crazy hard. They have all these big fancy words that she's never seen before in her life! And the listening recordings use all kinds of accents and speak super fast. She said it's nothinglike the easy readings and listenings we do in my English classes at elementary school. But here's the really crazy part - Amy said the test is entirely in English! No Chinese at all, can you believe it? The instructions, the questions, the reading passages, the audio recordings - every single bit is 100% English. She has to understand literally everything that's being said or written and be able to read and listen perfectly. Just thinking about it makes my head spin!Apparently there's also a writing section where you have to write a short essay, also 100% in English of course. Amy is pretty good at writing essays in Chinese, but writing one in pure English from start to finish? She looked like she was going to faint when she told me that part!I felt really bad for poor Amy having to take such a difficult and scary test. All those hours and hours of hardcore English reading, listening, and writing? No thanks! I'll stick to the easy English we do in class for now. Give me that Big Grown-Up English Test in 10 more years, maybe I'll be ready by then!Amy said she has been studying day and night to prepare. She watches English movies and shows, listens to English podcasts, reads English books and news, and practices writing essays. She even went and bought all these sample test bookswith practice questions for each section. I saw the books - they were gigantic, fatter than my schoolbag when it's stuffed with textbooks! Just flipping through them made me exhausted. When I asked Amy if she thinks she's ready, she sighed and said "I really hope so, but I'm still pretty nervous." She has to get a high score on the Big Grown-Up English Test to get admitted to her dream university program. I could see her hands shaking a little bit just talking about it. Poor thing, no wonder she looks so stressed out these days!Well, the big test is happening next weekend. I'll make sure to give Amy a huge high-five and tell her "You got this, sis!" right before she goes in. Maybe I'll even bake her some cookies for good luck! Heck, I think I'd need to eat about twenty cookies before attempting that crazy difficult test. Kudos to Amy and all her fellow students for being brave enough to take it on.Whew, I'm getting tired just from talking about this Big Grown-Up English Test! Thank goodness I'm way too young to worry about that right now. For the next few years, I'll stick to the fun English lessons and games we do at school. Then when I'm all grown-up, maybe I'll be ready to face that huge English beast too! But no rush, I'm more than happy being a little kid for now. Fighting giant English tests can wait!。
