Some people negotiate deals for a living. Dr Herb Cohen is one of these professional talkers, called in by companies to negotiate on their behalf . He approaches the art of negotiation as a game because, as he is usually negotiating for somebody else, he says this helps him drain the emotional content from his conversation. He is working in a competitive field and needs to avoid being too adversarial. Whether he succeeds or not, it is important to him to make a good impression so that people will recommend him.The starting point for any deal, he believes, is to identify exactly what you want from each other. More often than not, one party will be trying to persuade the other round to their point of view. Negotiation requires two people at the end saying ‘yes”. This can be a problem because one of them usually begins by saying “no”. However, although this can make talks more difficult, this is often just a starting point in the negotiation game. Top management may well reject the idea initially because it is the safer option but they would not be there if they were not interested. It is a misconception that skilled negotiators are smooth operators in smart suits. Dr Cohen says that one of his strategiesis to dress down so that the other side can relate to you. Pitch your look to suit your customer. You do not need to make them feel better than you but, For example, dressing in a style that is not overtly expensive or successful will make you more approachable. People will generally feel more comfortable with somebody who appears to be like them rather than superior to them. They may not like you but they will feel they can trust you.Dr Cohen suggests that the best way to sell your proposal is by getting into the world of the other side. Ask questions rather than give answers and take an interest in what the other person is saying, even if you think what they are saying is silly. You do not need to become their best friends but being too clever will alienate them. A lot of deals are made on impressions. Do not rush what you are saying---put a few hesitations in , do not try to blind them with your verbal dexterity. Also, you should repeat back to them what they have said to show you take them seriously.Inevitably some deals will not succeed. Generally the longer the negotiations go on, the better chance they have because people do not want to think their investment and energies have gone to waste. However , joint venture can mean joint risk and sometimes , if this becomes too great , neither party may be prepared to see the deal through . More common is a corporate culture clash between companies, which can put paid to any deal. Even having agreed a deal, things may not be tied up quickly because when the lawyers get involved, everything gets slowed down as they argue about small details.De Cohen thinks that children are the masters of negotiation. Their goals are totally selfish. They understand the decision-making process within families perfectly. If Mum refuses theirrequest , they will troop along to Dad and pressure him. If al else fails, they will try the grandparents, using some emotional blackmail. They can also be very single-minded and have an inexhaustible supply of energy for the cause they are pursuing. So there are lesson to be learned from watching and listening to children.15 Dr Cohen treats negotiation as a game in order toA put people at easeB remain detachedC be competitiveD impress rivals16 Many people say “no” to a suggestion in the beginning toA convince the other party of their point of viewB show they are not really interestedC indicate they wish to take the easy optionD protect their company’s situation17 Dr Cohen says that when you are trying to negotiate you shouldA adapt your style to the people you are talking toB make the other side feel superior to youC dress in a way to make you feel comfortable.D try to make the other side like you18 According to Dr Cohen, understanding the other person will help you toA gain their friendshipB speed up the negotiationsC plan your next move.D convince them of your point of view19 Deals sometimes fail becauseA negotiations have gone on too longB the companies operate in different waysC one party risks more than the other.D the lawyers work too slowly20 Dr Cohen mentions children’s negotiation techniques to show that you shouldA be prepared to try every routeB try not to make people feel guiltyC be careful not to exhaust yourselfD control the decision-making process.参考答案:15 B16D 17A 18D19B 20 A。

E: What kinds of people do you like to work with in school activities? C: Well, that really depends, you know. You have to choose one of the topics from the three below and then talk for about 1 minute. You have 1 minute to prepare your ideas.2.In this part of the test, you are asked to give a short talk on a business topic. You have to choose one of the topics from the three below and then talk for about one minute. You have one minute to prepare your ideas.A What is important when...?Planning a presentation- Considering the audience- Clear structure-B What is important when...?Changing working companies- Financial rewards- Opportunities in the future-C What is important when...?Criticising staff- Giving them respect- Letting them know the reason-正确答案:I choose Topic B, “What is important when changing working companies?”As to this topic, as far as I am concerned, there are three things to consider. First, I think financial rewards are very important when you plan to move to another company. Companies which could offer competitive salary are definitely more attractive since everyone has to earn his living by working. And usually, companies with high financial rewards are usually famous and big ones. Second, we must consider the career opportunities the company can provide, such aspersonal value system, future benefits and so on. People tend to see the on-hand rewards and neglect the future benefits. However, the latter could really be significant for those who have little working experience. For example, people working as an intern in Microsoft and other World Top 500 can only get a certain amount of salary, but after they get out of there, they may have gained an amazingly increased self-value. Third, I believe the location of the company is another concern when we change jobs, especially in big cities. Nowadays, we may live in one part of a city and work in another part of the city far far away. This could take people too much time. Imagine if you have to spend 3 hours every day on the way, it can be really hard to balance your leisure time and work. And if you can have a job not far from home, you can have more time to learn new things, to have fun with your family or things like that.SECTION 3 DISCUSSION (ABOUT 5 MIN)In this part of the test you are given a discussion topic. You have 30 seconds to look at the prompt card, an example of which is below, and then about 3 minutes to discuss the topic with your partner. After that examiner will ask you more questions related to the topic.3.In this part of the test, you are given a discussion topic. You have 30 seconds to look at the prompt card, an example of which is below, and then about three minutes to discuss the topic with your partner. After that, the examiner will ask you more questions related to the topic. For two candidatesTraining PlanYour company has decided to use an outside agency for language training for the staff. You have been asked to have preliminary discussions with the agency to organise this.Discuss the situation together, and decide: - what information you will need to provide for the agency- what kinds of questions you will need to ask the agency. For three candidatesTraining PlanYour company has decided to use an outside agency for language training for the staff. You have been asked to have preliminary discussions with the agency to organise this.Discuss the situation together, and decide: - what information you will need to provide for the agency- what kinds of questions you will need to ask the agency- what other arrangements would have to be made for the training programme.Follow-on questions- What kind of training do you think a company should provide to the employees?- Will you make the training course selective or compulsory?(Why?)- About the schedule of the course, do you prefer a full-time or a part-time system?(Why?)- What can be the disadvantages of using an outside agency for such training?- How can you evaluate the effect of the training?正确答案:(For three candidates)A: Hey, you know what? Our company is going to invite the Spark English to give the staff a language training course. B: Really, that would be wonderful. Some of the staff really need to improve their English, especially their business English. C: And what information should we offer to Spark English? A: Well, I think we should tell them the numbers of staff going to take this course, and the real English level of our staff. B: That is good, and I believe the information about their characteristics and their working hours is also useful. C: Of course, and whatabout the Spark English? What information should we ask from them? A: Oh, there are millions of questions such as how qualified the teachers are, whether they are professional business English teachers or company staff working as part-time teachers, how long the course is, etc. B: And I want to know the style of their teaching. C: Hey, here I have an idea. Why don’t we arrange a party for the staff and the Spark English teachers? We can make them know each other before the course really starts. B: Wow, that is amazing! I like your idea. In this way, they may make acquaintance with each other and this is a good chance for them to ask questions they would like to know. A: OK. Since we have discussed all about this, let’s get down to our work. I can’t wait to see them. C: Good. I’ll give the Spark English a telephone call to talk about the plan. Follow-on questions- From my point of view, a company should provide the employees with trainings that can improve their professional skills and managerial abilities.- It depends. For those courses that all staff should take, they should be compulsory, while other courses can be selective so that the staff can choose according to their own needs.- For my part, I prefer a part-time system, because a full-time system will affect the daily routine of the staff.- An outside agency may not know so clearly about the needs and characteristics of the employees, which can affect the result of the training.- There are several ways to evaluate the effect of the training: holding professional exams, conducting surveys among the employees and evaluating the effect of the training in the daily work of the staff.。

2019 年 BEC 中级商务英语阅读模拟试题When two brands are better than oneElena Alvarez takes a look at the effectiveness of marketing partnershipsIn the corporate world, rivalry is more common thanco-operation. But increasingly; companies have been setting aside their differences; the new idea is that two brand names are better than one. Sharing databases, strategies and communication systems can be the most effective means of attracting customers. (G )This partnership will give itaccess to the utility company ’s database of thousands of corporate clients, who will be offered special deals on allits products. The philosophy behind such joint ventures is simple. In economically challenging times, marketing partnerships provide a cost-effective method of increasing brand awareness and sales. As one expert in the field puts it, ’Clever marketing partnerships allow brands to target the right people, cutting down the above-the-line spend. ’(8).....E....... It is better to simplify theprocess and give them one focal point.Recent research has indicated that marketing partnerships can be up to 27 per cent more productive than single company campaigns.(9) .......B..... In particular, itis ideal for bringing instant branding to companies thatlack immediate consumer appeal. One well-established UK phone manufacturer, ITB, wasquick to realise this, and formed an alliance with 7a/fc aleading women’s magazine. The phone company has benefitedfrom the strong branding of the magazine, which has itscustomer base among professional women in their early 20s. (10)....D........ This combined approach also offered ITB aquick route into image enhancement, and this is true of manyother marketing partnership deals. To give anotherillustration, it is no coincidence that some well-knowncartoon characters are currently enhancing the image of Nasco household cleaning products.(11).....F.......And, of course, this strategy should also guarantee that consumers’children insist on these products rather than rival brands. However, while association with a powerful brand cangive a significant boost to sales, being connected to adevalued brand can have a negative result. The problemsof one brand inevitably impact on the other in apartnership.(12).....A.......A company may take years torecover from this sort of bad publicity. Indeed, there arenumerous examples of disastrous marketing alliances. In such cases, not enough thought has been given to the partnershipand the reasons behind it, and it has brought little value toeither the customer or the companies involved.A In such circumstances, the effects arefrequently major and can be long-lasting.B Some experts therefore predict that this style ofmarketing will take up an increasingly large proportionof many companies’ total marketing budgets.C Successful marketing partnerships can consequently bring a financial advantage even to small andstruggling companies such as these.D In return, its partner enjoys a broader distribution platform from which to promote its brand.E With only a finite number of consumers in any target market, there is no need to overwhelm prospects with competing messages from different organisations.F These are fairly standard items, but clearlythe company hopes to transform them by broadeningthe associations consumers have with the brand.G For example, Profit Plus, a large UK financial services company, has recently joined forces with a leading supplier of electricity.这篇文章名为《 When two brands are better than one 个品牌强于一个,讲的是市场合作(marketing partnership)》,两的利处。

PART FIVEPART ONELook at the statements below and the information on the opposite page about feedback on staff performance. Which section(A, B, C or D)does each statement 1-7 refer to? For each statement(1-7), mark one letter(A, B, C or D)on your Answer Sheet. You will need to use some of these letters more than once.Example:0 the reluctance of companies to base pay on staff feedback Changes in Performance FeedbackA In the past, feedback about your performance used to mean a quiet chat with the boss. But now 360-degree feedback - the system where employees are also given feedback from peers and from the people they manage - is taking root in corporate culture. The system is characterised by greater participation and has grown out of the desire of companies to create more open working environments where people work better together and ideas and opinions are exchanged between teams and across levels of seniority.B PCs linked to the company IT network are set to become the feedback machines. Many firms introducing 360-degree feedback are using Personal Development Planner software. Feedback on an individual, which is based on a questionnaire relating to attributes needed for that person’s role in the company, is collected using this electronic system. All the information gathered is analysed and the end result is a suggested development plan. The advantage is that individuals make requests for the feedback themselves and receive the results directly.C Sarah Rains, from the pharmaceutical company Optec, said, Now feedback is available on our network, we encourage managers to choose how they use it. It is a flexible tool and we tell them that waiting for the annual event of a formal appraisal needn’t apply.’ At the engineering company NT, 250 technical managers have been through the feedback process. Jack Palmer, a senior manager there said, ‘We needed to develop the interpersonal skills of these technically-minded people. In particular, we wanted to build on their team-working and coaching skills.’D So, how is the new feedback culture likely to affect you? It could form the basis of your personal development programme, providing pointers to your strengths and also to those areas you need to develop more. Or feedback could be used for ‘succession planning’, where companies use the information to speculate on who has the right skills to move into more senior positions. As yet, few organisations have stretched the role of feedback so far as to link it to salaries. But one thing is clear: the future will bring even wider participation by all members of staff.1.staff being reminded that it is not essential to restrict feedback to once a year正确答案:C2.the way in which feedback could identify people suitable for promotion正确答案:D3.the aim of improving staff communication throughout an organisation正确答案:A4.the feedback obtained on an employee being linked to requirements for a particular job正确答案:B5.aspects of a group of employees’work that were identified as requiring improvement正确答案:C6.feedback indicating both positive and negative aspects of an individual’s work正确答案:D7.the participation of less senior personnel in a member of staff’s feedback正确答案:APART TWORead the article below about the differences between chief executives and entrepreneurs. Choose the best sentence from the opposite page to fill each of the gaps. For each gap(8-12), mark one letter(A-G)on your Answer Sheet. Do not use any letter more than once. There is an example at the beginning(0). Analysing the EntrepreneurThe ever-increasing attraction of undergraduate courses in business studies demonstrates that many young people begin their working lives determined to be a success in business. Many of them will have ambitions of becoming bosses.(0)___G___That should be the question which all ambitious young business people ask themselves. Some graduates learn how to run a business in someone else’s time, and then in their early thirties, start out on their own. That course of action is relatively common and straightforward.【P1】______Often, however, their business flair comes at the expense of more mundane business skills such as team building and maintaining harmony.A recent study, in which seventeen successfulentrepreneurs took part in in-depth interviews, as did a similar number of chief executives, concluded that honesty and strong moral principles are important characteristics of entrepreneurs who achieve lasting success. According to the various tests and self-assessment questionnaires used in the interviews, seventy per cent of entrepreneurs have these characteristics, as opposed to only twenty-eight per cent of chief executives. 【P2】______ It would seem that most entrepreneurs deserve more credit than people generally give them. This ethical style of leadership fosters a culture in which expectations are uncompromisingly high and in which people believe they will be properly rewarded for their individual contribution. 【P3】______ Employees often complain that the worst kind of bosses are the ones who own the business, as they can be very intolerant of others who make mistakes.Entrepreneurs are passionate about their work but they have not worked their way up through the organisation and tend to lack the people management qualities that chief executives have developed over long careers.【P4】______Of course, it could be argued that the single-minded approach of entrepreneurs is what makes them successful; it certainly enables them to put extraordinary effort into what they do.The study indicates that generally chief executives can match entrepreneurs in terms of drive and determination. There is one exception and that relates to taking risks.【P5】______The chief executive can, on the other hand, always move to another company. But in the end, if there are no entrepreneurs, there is no work for chief executives. It is the people that start businesses who are the original wealth creators.Example:A However, it can also result in entrepreneurs being profoundly disappointed when others fail to live up to their high standards.B They need to have the confidence to make everyone in the organisation believe that this is no ordinary place and no ordinary job.C Given the common perception that entrepreneurs are only in business to make money, this very positive finding was perhaps the most surprising.D They are less likely to promote teamwork and co-operation than chief executives, who are much better at reading and understanding those around them.E After all, if it is your own company, you cannot walk away, and you will do anything either to keep it afloat or to help it prosper.F But true entrepreneurs do not necessarily wait until their business knowledge has improved or until the time is right - they have always been driven to achieve.G But is it best for them to become entrepreneurs and start their own business or work towards running someone else’s?8.【P1】正确答案:F9.【P2】正确答案:C10.【P3】正确答案:A11.【P4】正确答案:D12.【P5】正确答案:EPART THREERead the article below about careers in children’s book publishing and the questions on the opposite page. For each question(13-18), mark one letter(A, B, C or D)on your Answer Sheet. Leading from the top Catherine Bauer looks at career development in children’s book publishingTo get on in the world of children’s book publishing one needs to be ‘bright, nice and not ambitious’. Those are the words of a 37-year-old manager thinking about leaving the industry. Managers in other industries would, by that age, be striving towards greater leadership challenges and rewards, while Human Resources departments would be doing all they could to prevent hungry competitors from getting hold of experienced and talented employees. Maintaining successful corporations and happy shareholders is, after all, dependent on using the talents and experience of one’s staff, not on being nice.Career progression in the children’s sector of publishing seems to be determined almost by luck rather than a proper career structure or assessment of employees’ competencies. Sarah Carter, for example, started her career as an assistant in the customer service department at William Davis Publishing. She only became aware of a vacancy in public relations because her department was on the same floor as the publicity office. ‘I had already been promoted to manager in my department, but realised that any career development there would be limited. I decided to move sideways into PR, which was also where I felt my skills were more suited. I was lucky a position came up within the company.’Across the publishing houses, staff training or development is generally dependent on the approach taken by your immediate boss. Virginia Coutts, editorial director at Prodigy Publications, says, ‘This is fine, if you happen to have one who is effective. When I started at Prodigy I worked for Roger Gibbons. I was in children’s fiction, but he also gave me some work on picture books and non-fiction, and that meant I gained experience in a range of areas. He also made sure that new people didn’t come in, train and then move on. And it wasn’t a question of being here for three years or so before you got promoted.’Not everyone has a similar experience with their manager, but this is not surprising when one considers that few managers have themselves had any structured training. Mark Harlock, marketing manager at T R Publishers, says, ‘My job change into management was completely unsupported - my requests for training took months, and by the time they were approved the needhad passed. Yes, you learn on the job, but how much more constructive for all involved if it happens in a structured way. Surely this would speed up the learning curve?’However, there are changes in the air. At Little Feet Publications, Barbara Foster has been overhauling the company’s training and career structure so that all employees have regular appraisals. ‘We are ahead of our competitors here at Little Feet, but even we are only beginning to scratch the surface. So far there’s been little opposition to the appraisals, but there’s still loads to do and the results will not become clear for a few years yet.’Perhaps the industry should consider itself lucky to have so many dedicated managers who have, through a combination of chance and determination, successfully developed their careers in publishing. Clearly it now needs to review what is being done to develop, train and reward the next generation of bosses. Above all, the industry has to find more people with entrepreneurial spirit and push them into demanding roles rather than make them serve their time at a junior level. But such changes can only come from the very top.13.The writer says that in comparison to publishing, other companiesA.are more concerned with pleasing their shareholders.B.are more focused on achieving their goals.C.place greater importance on keeping their best managers.D.work harder on interpersonal relationships.正确答案:C14.Sarah Carter changed her job within William Davis Publishing becauseA.the Public Relations department made it clear they wanted her.B.she saw more long-term potential in public relations.C.she did not want to relocate to another floor.D.it represented a promotion for her.正确答案:B15.Virginia Courts says that when she first started at Prodigy PublicationsA.she intended to move on quickly.B.she had a wide range of skills.C.she had to do too many different jobs.D.she had a good line manager.正确答案:D16.What does Mark Harlock say about formal training?A.It is faster than learning on the job.B.It should be based on the trainee’s specific needs.C.It is more often approved for managers than other employees.D.It enables better working relationships to be built.正确答案:A17.In using the words ‘scratch the surface’(line 30), Barbara Foster means that her actionsA.have started something that will take a lot of work to complete.B.have revealed big problems that she could not have foreseen.C.may turn out to be unpopular with some employees.D.may cause disputes with other publishers.正确答案:A18.In the final paragraph, the writer recommends that the publishing industry shouldA.encourage managers to delegate minor matters more often.B.put pressure on directors to change the way they work.C.look for people with business flair and good ideas.D.spend more time training existing managers.正确答案:CPART FOURRead the article below about a company that sells household products. BEC商务英语中级阅读练习题目Read the article below about the changing role of human resources departments. The best person for the jobEmployees can make a business succeed or fail, so the people who choose them have a vital role to play.Employees are a company's new ideas, its public face and its main asset. Hiring the right people is therefore a significant factor in a company's success.(0) G If the human resources department makes mistakes with hiring, keeping and dismissing staff, a business can disappear overnight. Many companies now realise that recruiting the best recruiters is the key to success.Sarah Choi, Head of HR at Enco pic, believes that thinking commercially is a key quality in HR. Every decision an HR manager makes needs to be relevant to advancing the business.(8) ...C.....That's no longer the case. HR managers have to think more strategically these days. They continually need to think about the impact of their decisions on the bottom line. (9).....F... For example,a chief executive will expect the HR department to advise on everything from the headcount to whether to proceed with an acquisition. Why do people go into HR in the first place? Choi has a ready answer. I think most people in the profession are attracted by a long-term goal.(10)....D......Nothing happens in the company which isn't affected by or doesn't impact on its employees, so theHR department is a crucial part of any business. Not all operational managers agree. An informal survey of attitudes to HR departments that was carried out last year by a leading business journal received comments such as "What do they actually contribute?"(11).....A..... As Choi points out, salaries have never been higher and, in addition, HR managers often receive substantial annual bonuses.Despite the financial rewards, HR managers often feel undervalued, and this is a major reason for many leaving their jobs.(12)...E......However, a lack of training and development is a more significant factor. These days, good professional development opportunities are considered an essential part of an attractive package,Choi explains.A But rising levels of remuneration demonstrate that the profession's growing importance is widely recognised.B At one time, a professional qualification was required in order to progress to the top of HR.C Other departments and senior executives used to see HR managers as having a purely administrative role.D Since it's one of the few areas where you can see the whole operation, it can lead to an influential role on the board.E Being seen as someone who just ticks off other people's leave and sick days does not help build a sense of loyalty.F They therefore need to be competent in many aspects of a company's operations.G On the other hand, recruiting the wrong staff can lead to disaster.BEC商务英语中级阅读练习题目解析这篇文章的标题有些misleading,“The best people for the job”,还以为是招人的标准。

翻页会有参考答案、译文!When I am interviewed, I am occasionallyasked: “What is the secret of business success?”If I knew the perfect answer, I would have madefar fewer mistakes over the years; in truth I suspectthere are many ingredients. Nevertheless, as an exercise, I have noted below a number ofcontributing factors that I think matter more than most.● Work for yourself. To be self-employed can be lonely, and is likely to be hard work. Butultimately you will gain the rewards for your efforts if you are right – as long as you are lucky. You can certainly earn a handsome living working in a big bank or an accountancy firm, but youwill never achieve a spectacular capital gain, or change the world in the way that anentrepreneur can by fulfilling their dream.● Be in the right place. History shows that growing markets, where entrepreneurs areencouraged, offer greater opportunities than places where there is stagnant demand, high taxand lots of regulation. On that basis, anyone with little to lose who is living in the west shouldemigrate to the east: it's what I advise anyone under the age of 30 to do. This is a harshverdict, and inevitably there are thousands of exceptions. But it is undeniable that far morenew millionaires and billionaires are being minted incountries such as India and China than inEurope. Growing gross domestic product, expanding populations, low costs and modest taxrates offer a powerful combination that the west simply cannot match.● Learn how to borrow. An ability to find and use debt is a factor in most stories of greatwealth. Even if banks are not extending much credit right now, the cycle will turn andeventually they will reopen for business. I was slow to realise the fundamental importance ofusing debt. Many entrepreneurs overdo it at the top, and end up losing many of their leveragedassets when prices fall. But somehow they rarely go bankrupt, and very often reappear withnew bankers in tow when the cycle turns.Language Points:Exam Focus:(1) What is the main reason for working for yourself?A Hard work keeps you out of loneliness.B You can get a sense of accomplishment besides material fulfillment.C Handsome earnings will be accessible if you are lucky.D You can achieve a spectacular capital gain.(2) According to Paragraph 4, which is NOT the advantage of emerging markets?A Growing GDPB Expanding populationsC Existing regulationD Tax policyOral Topic:In your opinion, what is the decisive factor of business success?。

一、1 This businessman has successfully targeted a different group of consumers.2 With careful forward planning, this businessman is helping the company survive a difficult period.3 The company is now more open to change because of this businessmans way of thinking.4 This businessman has made and implemented certain decisions despite opposition to them.5 This businessman has achieved some success by misleading people about his intentions.6 The abilities of this businessman were previously doubted by the company that employs him.7 This businessman is admired for his ability to manage a number of business interests.Businessman of the Year AwardA James King: Chief Executive of Fentons FinanceKing was nominated for the quality of his leadership, with the judges claiming that the Fentons Finance boss is almost revered by his team. He is credited with reinventing Fentons Finance - revitalising its culture of inflexibility, removing outdated pre-merger barriers and playing a brilliant tactical game. He led everyone to believe he was opposed to large mergers and then jumped on the Westcombe Bank opportunity at just the right moment. History will be the judge, but for now the markets consider King to be a star.B Keith Nash: Chief Executive of Hamleys SupermarketsNash took over as CEO when Hamleys systems and distribution were out of date and the brand badly needed freshening up. He began refocusing the brand at the higher quality end of the food market and launched several own-brand initiatives for the health conscious. As a result, the share price has gone up nearly 80 percent. This should be extremely satisfying for Nash, who had left the retailer in 1986, disappointed after failing to secure the top job.C Jorge Marquez: Chairman of the Kenwick GroupMarquez was a popular choice for his achievements at Kenwick. The judges say he has been courageous in pushing through the appointment of controversial or inexperienced chief executives to companies within the group, and then sponsoring them as they transformed their businesses. He operates as a virtual chairman, without a permanent office in any one company. He phones his CEOs regularly, and several of them have acknowledged the vital contribution he makes to their effectiveness. Everyone is impressed at how he also finds the time to be chairman of two other large companies.D Richard Jenkins: Finance Director of Centron AdvertisingLabouring in the shadow of a high-profile boss can sometimes draw attention away from the finance director, and the judges considered it was high time Jenkins got that attention. The CEO may be the public face of Centron, but Jenkins is the one who makes it run smoothly. Behind the scenes, he is constantly demonstrating that budgets and forecasts are what is needed to make a company successful, particularly now that the advertising market has beenhit by recession. It is largely thanks to him that Centron is in much better shape than its rivals.《‘Businessman of the Year Award》年度企业家奖。

BEC商务英语(中级)阅读模拟试卷154 (题后含答案及解析) 题型有:1. PART ONE 2. PART TWO 3. PART THREE 4. PART FOUR 5. PART FIVE

PART ONE Look at the statements below and the advice of four market analysts about a company’s future strategy on the opposite page. Which analyst’s advice(A, B, C or D)does each statement(1-7)refer to? For each statement(1-7), mark one letter(A, B, C or D)on your Answer Sheet. You will need to use some of these letters more than once.Example:0 It would be inadvisable for Dexter to extend its range of products at this time. What next for Dexter? Dexter’s new shaving cream is a hit in the UK. The company’s next challenges are to branch out into new products and to succeed in America. Four top analysts give their advice.A Joe HutchinsonFor Dexter, the hardest part is yet to come. Many British companies fail in the U.S. and Dexter is, unsurprisingly, finding it tough. And what’s the sense in seeking cash for expansion into new product areas while having to support a loss-making American operation? There are more important things to do with the money, for example dealing with the company’s low profitability - a 2% return on sales. It might well be time to look at a few cost headings.B Dan ValeroBreaking out of the shaving cream market should not be impossible for Dexter, but raising the money to launch the products is the real challenge. Dexter might seek a partner with the promotional skills needed for mass marketing, or focus on product development and franchising. They ought to consider whether they should continue to attack the American market, and, if so, they should seek a local partner. If control is a priority, the European market may be worth a look instead.C James SunderlandDexter’s entrepreneurship, which has helped it get a share of a market previously dominated by two players, will be the key to further growth. The American market is particularly challenging, but a possible strategy is to target distributors to American retailers or a British-based subsidiary of an American parent. Another approach may be to form alliances with like-minded cult fashion or sports outlets and attract a slice of the US market open to trying new products.D Melanie Laconte Dexter intends to increase its market share, and one way of doing this is to introduce new products, perhaps aimed at women, into its existing range. However, its managers must be aware that the women’s grooming market is crowded, and that to extend here they must remain loyal to the values of their existing range while still proving attractive to the new sector. They need to take a hard look at how to generate demand; so far it’s worked well through word of mouth but the average American buyer expects a huge advertising campaign.

1. The kind of promotion Dexter has relied on so far is unlikely to influence its target customers. 正确答案:D 2. Although Dexter can probably extend its range, finding enough capital will be difficult.

正确答案:B 3. Dexter needs to think carefully about the brand image of its products. 正确答案:D 4. Supplying niche retailers could give Dexter access to a new group of customers.

正确答案:C 5. Dexter should consider working with a company experienced in advertising on a large scale.

正确答案:B 6. Increasing the margin on the current range is an area Dexter should concentrate on.

正确答案:A 7. Dexter’s approach to doing business has enabled it to compete with larger companies.

正确答案:C PART TWO Read the article below about the differences between chief executives and entrepreneurs. Some graduates learn how to run a business in
