Characters of Tess
Alec D'Urberville
• Alec is the representative of the wickedness. He is the son of a rich merchant who adds the name of D’Urberville to his own name. He is a fraud as well as a morally corrupt person. • This duplicity of character was so intense in Alec. • He seduced Tess when she is no more than seventeen years old, and later pursues her relentlessly until she agrees to become his mistress again.
“I suppose I am a bad fellow—a damn bad fellow. I was born bad, and I have lived bad, and I shall die bad, in all probability.”
-- In Chapter XII, he bluntly tells Tess
Angel and Tess
Tess's father
Jack Durbeyfield (Sir John d'Urberville) — Tess's father, a carter in village, who is a lazy alcoholic. When he learns that his family is descended from nobility, he works less and less and starts pretending that he is an aristocrat.

Projection

Psychological projection was first conceptualized by Sigmund Freud as a defense mechanism in which a person unconsciously rejects his or her own unacceptable attributes by ascribing them to objects or persons in the outside world instead. Thus, projection involves psychically expelling one's negative qualities onto others, and is a common psychological process. Theoretically, projection and the related projective identification reduces anxiety by allowing the unconscious expression of the unwanted unconscious impulses or desires through displacement.

Tess of the D' Urbervilles

Angel Clare
The son of a clergyman; Tess's husband and true love. He considered himself a freethinker, but his notions of morality turned out to be fairly conventional: he rejected Tess on their wedding night when she confessed that she wasn't a virgin(处女), even though he, too, has contributed to the tragedy of Tess.
The heroine(女 主人公), the eldest daughter in a poor rural working family; a fresh, pretty country girl.
Alec d'Urberville He seduced(诱奸)Tess when she is no more than seventeen years old, and later pursues her cruelly until she agrees to become his mistress(情妇) again. The representative of the wickedness is Alec. He was a fraud(骗子) as well as a morally corrupt person.
With the energy and passion, this is a season for Tess to forget the miserable past and to face the future bravely.

Background Brief Introduction The tragedy of The Character of Tess My Opion on The Cause
My Opion on The Cause
• I think the tragedy of Tess begins from her ignorance, she doesn't know how to protect herself, thus lead to seduction. Another part of responsibilities is from her family and social background and the feudal society deep-rooted concept.Angel's insistence of virgin is also the cause, since he had done the same thing, why cannot Tess be forgiven?Besides,we cannot neglect people's greed and vanity mind(it is expressed in Tess's family). However the ending is not really so tragic, because she at least get the last bit of little happiness, brave resistance.
embodiment of sin" "she always feels people all over the world are noticed her case, dare not rise see," she can't forget her own shame. Tess is such a woven with moral snares she bounded up. In fact, her bounded consciousness has its profound historical basis, it is the manifestation of the whole social consciousness. Tess as a certain historical period of the individual would inevitablely meet the formation of the particular historical period of social consciousness and moral concept, she thought and action also will be restricted by age and social consciousness.

Tess 悲剧

The causes of Clare’s tragedy 王雅雅 080712013 08专升本一班 Tragedy can also be a reflection of life, which is shared in most western cultures and applied in many different literature works. Different writers depict the tragedies from different points of view and with different techniques. This paper will analyze and explain the tragedy as following aspects. 1. Social Roots Social roots mainly refer to the social rules and moral fiber which led to Tess’s tragedy. Tess lived in a situation which patriarchal system dominated the whole society. At that time, women were considered inferior to men. The traditional idea held that the most important thing for a woman is charity. For one thing, the men claim that women should be pure and virginal. For another, men were addicted to sexual matters .Men had forgotten that those who broke women’s chastity were themselves. All in all, only what the men said was totally right. The women could do nothing but to accept and obey the rules like a wretched slave. 2. Family background of Tess Tess was born in a poor peasant family which was once magnificent. She was a dairymaid who is beautiful, humble, pure, kind, innocent . However, Tess’s father was a country hawker, who was lazy, old-minded, liked drinking. Her mother was also a dairymaid, the same as her father, who was simple-minded and sticked to vanity. Because of the terrible parents’ vanity ,Tess’s tragedy began to come . In order to show off their so-called aristocrat status and desire for vanity ,Tess’s parents wanted to acknowledge the family of Alec as relatives to improve their status. At first Tess depicted parents’ hypocrisy and noble origin. However , as the oldest child in the family , she couldn’t see her sisters and brothers suffer hardships, especially when the old horse passed away, on which their family mainly relied. At this period of time, what she could do to save their family was to marry Alec. Unfortunately , when she gave birth to a child, she was abandoned . She was so innocent that she took it as what she deserved .At the same time, she was morally reproached by the public. Actually ,Alec was not totally morally corrupt when Tess was deserted by Angel, Alec accepted her again. Then, we know that Tess was seduced by Alec and she was physically mature and they were driven by human natural desire. 3. Hypocritical Morals and Unequal Legal System Tess was living under the capitalism invasion of the rural England.Although Tess was beautiful, hardworking, kind-hearted, smart, she was still regarded as a laborer with a low social status who will receive oppression and humiliation in the bourgeois society without resistance. Tess was in the period of Victorian age, England bourgeois society’s moral ethics mainly focus on the interests and benefits of men regardless of the existence of women. In the capitalist society, legal regime and moral outlook took turns to exploit the low class and oppress the poor peasants. The low-class people were impossible to obtain fair treatment. Alec did all kinds of evil things , but was protected by the law and he was just morally punished. Nevertheless, when Tess killed Alec ,she was condemned the death penalty. All this indicated the bourgeoisie system’s discrimination and negligence of the low-class people. 4.Psychological Roots In this story , Hardy naming his hero “angel”might has his own intention. We know that Angel should be pure and kind. However, from the development of the plot,we can’t see purity from Angel Clare. He was born and bred in religion.Although he took up a distinguishing position on the social conventions,he abandoned traditional views and tried to throw off the shackles of upper class. At the newly-married night,Tess decided to tell him her guilt in detail. When Angel got the truth of Tess,he even couldn’t forgive her even if he had had the same experience as Tess .Angel was a man who believed that men could have affairs with girls while girls should remain virginal. He loved Tess’s beauty , kindness, but he couldn’t accept the truth that Tess had lost her chastity. So he said:“Tess!say it is not true! No, it is not true!”He was so selfish and it was clear that he took a deadly knock psychologically.Angel’s character determined Tess’s tragedy. 5.The characteristic of Tess Tess was a daughter of poor peasants. Her natural character reflected human nature’s diligence ,kindness, beauty and brave benevolence.Tess’s beauty and temperature are in harmony with the nature. So she was the nature’s daughter. Her mind was destroyed by the wrong common custom. Her own character decided she had no ability to protect herself and all she could do was to accept everything. Tess suffered from major changes in human relationships. She obviously had two nature of the social character---resistance and compromise.Although she had married Alec, she never lost herself. The blood relation’s transaction had ruined her purity and chastity and changed her from a simple girl to a complex woman. However, although she became a disgraceful woman, she revolted constantly and held an inviolable attitude to Alec. She silently bore the unfair system in spite of the pubic debate. Ever if life gave her only attack and disaster, she could stubbornly bear and shoulder the responsibility. The second time Tess met Alec just because she was in the most difficult time.Faced with temptation of Alec, she was in fact remained unwavering ,and was unwilling to compromise. 6.The degeneration of Farmers The story happened in the south of England. The laborers were mercilessly exploited by the rich landowners. In the 19th century, the economic crisis took place in bourgeois world, which led to social change. The change made many peasants lose their lands and became peasant workers. Most of them were in the shabby condition . Their narrow minds and foolishness made them lose themselves.Even in such a situation Tess’s parents wanted Tess to marry Alec in order to improve their status and satisfy the idea of vanity. So her kindness and innocence led to her later tragedy.Young Alec seduced her and the following pregnancy compels Tess to return home in disgrace. Her tragedy began. 7.The author The author Thomas Hardy depicted the novel by using fatalism or pessimism. All the characters and the matter in the story were closely related to common life and easy to see.He believed the miseries of people derived from fate which were playing jokes on them. Moreover, he was deeply influenced by the morality of Victorian Age in that women were inferior to men.The moral value of bourgeoisie should be strictly reproached.

Tess Of D’urbevilles 1001班 张佳佳 学号:2010012761 As far as i am concerned, Tess of D’urbevilles is one of my favorite novels. And now i want to share with you about my comprehension of the novel. About its theme,it reflects the tragedy of a woman,Tess. In tess’s time, the society is full of tremendous changes in almost every respect. The industrial revolution continues to develop with the social evils accompanied. The great transformation makes England from an agricultural base to an industrial base.More and more peasants become impoverished and live a miserable life. The family of Tess is no exception. Tess comes from a farmer’s family, the Durbeyfields. She has lived a poor but peaceful life. However,God “The President of the Immoral”begins play a cruel joke on this unsophisticated girl.Under her parents’ persuasion, the young girl forced to contact with the Stoke.D’Urbervilles.There she meets Alec D’Urbervilles, who shows off the estate and always seduces her. Alec managed to seduce her and made her pregnant.Being humiliated, she returned home.(待补充)And then she fell in love with Angel, but Angel abandoned her when he knew Tess was not virgin in the first night of their marriage.Later Tess was forced to become Alec’s mistress again for the sake of her starving family. However, one day Angel came back from Brazil to beg for the forgiveness of Tess. And this made Tess fall into great pains. At last, she killed Alec and she also paid this for her own life. The subtitle of the novel is A Pure Woman.Although in her time, she was regarded as a bad woman who became a mistress and committed a crime.Under the author’s pens,we all see a kind-hearted,honest,naive Tess, she is really a pure woman. But unfortunately she sacrificed for the social prejudice and the industrialization of the UK. The Characters of the main roles in the novel. 1. Tess Durbeyfield Tess was a daughter of poor peasants, her nature character is innocent and naive.Tess’s beauty and temperament are harmony with the nature, she is “the nature’s daughter”.And this character decided she has no ability to protect herself. The tragedy of her fate sets the tone early. As a beautiful country girl, she has all of the virtues of the laborers. She is industrious, innocent. At the beginning of the novel, the heroin Tess knows nothing but help her parents as much as possible to support the family and take care of her little sisters and brothers.Different from some other country girls, she has been educated, she is cleverer than others. Tess also is a very obedient girl.Whatever her parents says, she always obeys. She “claim kin”with a distant relative Alec, because her parents want her to do.As a result ,she is seduced by Alec for the first time. She is responsible for her family. She earns money to support the family and later she turns into Alec’s mistress again just for her starving family. When she is seduced by Alec ,she refuses to be his mistress and go back to home.“I have said i will not take anything more from you,and i will not .I cannot! I should be your creature to go on doing that, and i won’t! ”Tess shouts to Alec. When her mother says that Tess should get Alec to marry her,but Tess answers“perhaps any women would accept except me”.We can easily see from above that Tess is a self-respecting girl. Undoubtedly,Tess’s gracious merits and rebellious spirits should be appreciated, but as a descendant of downfallen nobility.Tess was born in a present family and affected by some old notions of morality and fatalism. We can see it in the whole novel, especially the relation between Tess and Angel. As everyone knows,Tess is seduced by Alec,it is not her own will, and she is a victim,so essentially she is pure, but she feels herself guilty. And these just show the weakness of her character. Angel Clare Angel is a bourgeois intellectual, the temporal bias and bourgeois traditional conception still exists in his mind.Whatever he does is just for his own benefit. On the surface,he is a gentleman, but in essence he is a hypocritical,self-centered and relentless man. When he learns that Tess is a descendant of an ancient aristocrat,he is happy because it can heighten Tess’s social position. When Tess confesses her past to him,he immediately changed his attitude to Tess.He regards her as a deceitful woman;he hurts her with his words, such as “You are one person, now you are another”.He just think that he is cheated, but in fact Tess is a victim, she needs comfort.Regardless of Tess’s suffering,he abandoned her relentlessly. Alec D’Urbervilles Alec is one of the representatives of the new and developing capitalistic class. He is a spoiled and wicked person,a high class snob. His viciousness is revealed completely when he meets Tess of the first time.In Chapter 3,he calls Tess “beauty”and intends to show her around his mansion. When he picks strawberries up,he puts them into her mouth in person regardless of Tess’s refusal. In Chapter 4,when Tess has work for his family,he does everything he can to seduces her.And i don’t think he loves Tess sincerely,he just likes her beauty. Alec comes across Tess after four years,he seems to have gone a remarkable transformation from a bad man into a pious and religious man,a preacher. But his wickedness comes to life at once when he sees Tess again. He deceives Tess that her husband will not come back forever. He even pesters and threatens her,“Remember ,my lady,i was
