We should have arrived at Liverpool at 9:19, but due to a typical London fog, the train had to move along so slowly that it was not until 10:30 that it got there. In spite of our late arrival, Joan, my wife’s sister, decided that she would go to see the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London while we went shopping. It was only after her sister had disappeared into the fog t hat my wife realized that we hadn’t decided where we should meet for lunch. Since I had our three tickets for the concert in my pocket, this was indeed a problem. There seemed to be nothing we could do except taking a taxi to the Tower of London, and try to find her there. Needless to say, we didn’t find her.It was now one o’clock, and the concert began at 2:30. “Perhaps she will think of waiting outside the concert hall,” suggested my wife hopefully. By this time the fog was so thick that road traffic had to stop, and the only way to get there was by underground railway. Hand in hand we felt our way along the road to where we thought the nearest station should be. An hour later we were still trying to find it. Just as I was about to lose my temper completely when we met a blind man tapping his way confidently through the fog. With his help we found Tower Hill tube station just fifty yards down the road.By now it was far too late even to try to get to the concert hall before the performance began at 2:30, so we decided to return to Cambridge. It took seven long hours instead of the usual two to make that journey. Nor were we able to get any food and drink on the train. Tired and hungry we finally reached home at ten, opening the door to the sound of the telephone bell. It was Joan; she had seen the Crown Jewels, had managed to get another ticket for concert, and had had a wonderful dinner at a restaurant near the hotel where she decided to stay for the night. Now she was ringing to discover whether we had had an equally successful day.1. Why was Joan separated from her sister and her brother-in-law?A. they could not see each other because of the fog.B. If you live near or are ever visiting an area close to a volcano, be sure you know what to do in case of an eruption. Before an eruption even comes, plan out two possible escape paths. If you have a family, come up with a plan for how to get back together if you are separated during an eruption. This is a very real possibility if an eruption happens during the day, when adults are at work and children are at school. In addition to planning, don’t forget to keep basic disaster supplies on hand: flashlights, extra batteries, and dust masks. When an eruption happens, try to find out and follow any instructions from the local government or safety workers, especially if some areas have been restricted due to the eruption. In general, avoid places that are downwind or downstream of the volcano, such as river valleys. If possible, wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts. Protect your eyes by wearing goggles and your breathing by wearing a dust mask or holding a damp cloth over your face. After an eruption is over, be careful to keep covering your mouth and nose when you go outside; ash will still be in the air, and it can seriously damage your breathing. In addition, it is still wise to wear long, protective clothing to keep ash from hurting your skin. Finally, if possible, try to clear ash off the roofs of homes and other buildings; ash is very heavy and can cause roofs to break.根据短文内容,判断正(T)误(F)( )1. The underlined word goggles in the third paragraph means eye creams.( )2. It is helpful to use a wet cloth to cover your face to protect your breathing.( )3. Ash can burn your house to the ground, so clean ash off your roof as quickly as possible. ( )4. To protect your breathing, you can wear a dust mask.( )5. Ash can hurt your skin.(B)An earthquake is clearly a terrible natural disaster, but what causes it? The earth itself is the source. The earth is covered with plates of rock that are constantly moving or sliding alongside each other. Often, however, the plates do not slide smoothly but the edges of rock catch on each other. Pressure begins to build as the plates continue to try moving but cannot. When the force builds too high, the rock breaks along a crack underground, suddenly releasing waves of energy which cause the ground to shake. The underground spot where the rock first broke is called the focus of the earthquake; that same spot on the ground’s sur face is called the epicenter of the earthquake.Man can also cause underground waves similar to earthquakes by setting off explosions. Explosions used to break rock to make tunnels for roads, railways or subways rarely cause very serious energy waves. However, a mine collapse can cause much larger waves, which can sometimes be felt by people nearby. Tests of nuclear warheads produce the largest waves, and are very similar to earthquakes. This is one reason for the worldwide ban on testing nuclear warheads, since all such tests produce effects similar to earthquakes.6. An earthquake happens because two rocks underground ______.A. rub against each otherB. push against each otherC. get stuck a littleD. suddenly break7. Waves of energy may be caused by ______.A. rocks underground suddenly breakingB. explosions undergroundC. a mine collapseD. All of the above.8. What can be inferred from the passage?A. No nuclear warhead has ever been exploded on the earth.B. Explosions of nuclear warheads cause waves of energy similar to earthquakes.C. Explosions of nuclear warheads cannot be felt.D. Small explosions of nuclear warhead don’t create waves of energy.9. Which statement is true according to the passage?A. Human beings can do something to stop earthquakes.B. Waves of energy from underground can always be felt.C. An epicenter is the focus of an earthquake.D. The focus of an earthquake is below the epicenter of an earthquake.Ⅵ. 书面表达Have you ever experienced a natural disaster, or have ever read or heard about a natural disaster? Write a passage about it. There is a massive forest fire in Australia. It is covering several square kilometres of land.M: Was it caused accidentally or naturally? Sometimes it gets so hot that fires begin naturally in Australia and Africa.W: Nobody knows at the moment, but it has been very hot there recently.Text 4A: I still find it incredible how millions of years of volcanic activity have created mountains thousands of metres tall, and the influences of rivers on valleys are unbelievable, too.B: Through thousands and even millions of years’ work, rivers have created deep valleys an d canyons like the Grand Canyon.A: It’s all so interesting. I’ll have to find more information about it on the Internet. Or perhaps I should try and attend your geography class.Text 5M: How would you describe the landscape in your country?W: My country is well-known for being very flat. There are some hills in the southeast of the country.M: Is it really completely flat?W: Pretty much. The land rises and falls only a few metres. In the southeast, the hills rise to a height of a few hundred metres. But in your country, there are mountains over 4,000 metres high.M: Yes, and they look so great!1. B2. B3. A4. C5. I attended it. I’ll lend my notes to you.Sam: Thank you very much. Did you think it was a good lecture?Mary: Oh, yes. It was very informative. I hadn’t realized how many positive effects volcanoes have on the environment.Sam: Positive effects from volcanoes? Like what?Mary: Well, the main good effect is providing nutrition to the surrounding soil. V olcanic ash often contains minerals that are good for plants.Sam: I gue ss that makes sense! It’s just hard to believe that volcanoes can be good for us! Mary: Yes, I know! He also mentioned that volcanic gases are the source of all the water that we have today.Sam: Really! Well, a coin has two sides, and so do volcanoes.Mar y: You said it! Well, I’ll bring you my notes tomorrow.Sam: Thanks, Mary! It was wonderful. The river is so peaceful and I really love the mountains and the caves.M: Yes, the mountains in Guilin are very famous. Did your guide tell you what they are made of and how they are formed?W: No, not really. But there was a professor of geology on our trip. He gave us a talk about how and why the caves form. Obviously all the mountains around that area are made of limestone. This is a very soft rock which can be worn away by water.M: I see. So the rain made the caves?W: No, of course not. How can you get rain inside a cave? But it was the water running down through the earth and through the rocks that caused the caves to form.M: So I was right. The rain falls and goes through the earth. As it goes it wears away the rock and forms the caves! Golly! I wonder if I could watch it happening.W: No, you couldn’t, not even if you sat there watching a rock for a year. It takes hundreds of thousands of years to make a cave formation.M: What a pity! I thought that might be fun. Well, anyway, I don’t think I might like to stay in those wet, cold and damp caves for a long time. I prefer the warm sun and the sea!W: So you won’t be visiting Guilin then?M: No. I’m off to Hawaii!9. B 10. C 11. B听第8段材料,完成12~15题Text 8Last year I decided to have a different kind of holiday. I became a volunteer at Mount Rainier Park. The mountain itself is an active volcano. It rises to more than 14,000 feet at its peak and lies within a national park of 980 square kilometres. It looked so beautiful in the photographs of the V olunteer Handbook.I decided to join the snowshoe volunteer project. This was a day’s work replanting and remarking the paths in the mountain. This part of the park is very beautiful and the plants that grow there are very small and fragile. Sometimes they are hidden by the snow so when people walk off the track they may be stepping on some delicate wild flowers. So when the snow melted, it was clear that some areas of plants would have to be replanted. We put on our thick coats, helmets and boots and worked hard all day only stopping work in the evening. I made several new friends working there so I want to return another time if it is possible.12. volunteer 13. active volcano 14. 14,000 feet 15. thick coats; helmets; boots Ⅱ. 单项选择,从A、B、C、D四个选项中,选择最佳答案完成句子1.
