All healthy people like their dinner, but their dinner is not the main object of their lives. So all healthy-minded people like making money – ought to like it and to enjoy the sensation of winning it; but the main object of their lives is not money; it is something better than money.A good soldier, for instance, mainly wishes to do his fighting well. He is glad of his pay –very properly so, and justly grumbles when you keep him ten months without it; still, his main notion of life is to win battles, not to be paid for winning them.So of doctors. They like fees no doubt –ought to like them; yet if they are brave and well educated, the entire object of their lives is not fees. They, on the whole, desire to cure the sick, and – if they are good doctors, and the choice were fairly put to them – would rather cure their patient and lose their fee than kill him and get it. And so with all other brave and rightly trained men; their work is first, their fee second, very important always, but still second. But in every nation, there is a vast class of people who are cowardly, and more or less stupid. And with these people, justas certainly the fee is first and the work second, as with brave people the work is first and the fee second. And this is no small distinction. It is the whole distinction. It is the whole distinction in a man. You cannot serve two masters; you must serve one or the other. If your work is first with you and your fee second, work is your master. Observe, then, all wise work is mainly threefold in character. It is honest, useful, and cheerful. I hardly know anything stranger than that you recognize honesty in play, and do not in work. In your lightest games you have always someone to see what you call "fair play". In boxing you must hit fair; in racing, start fair. Your watchword is fair play; your hatred, foul play. Did it ever strike you that you wanted another watchword also, fair work, and hatred also, foul work?()43.What is the main object for a well-educated,intellectual, or a brave man?A.MoneyB. HealthC. Something better than moneyD. food()44.What does “very properly so” mean?A.Very poorB. ReasonableB.Impossible D. Very good()45.If doctors are brave and well-educated, they should think______.A. their fee is firstB. Their patient is secondC. their work is firstD. both fee and work are first ()46.All wise work is mainly threefold in character, they are_____.A.honestB. usefulC. cheerfulD. A,B and C()47.What do you learn from the passage?A.All healthy-minded people like making money.B.The fee is first and work secondC.Work is something better than moneyD.Being soldiers and doctors. You will earn much money.BWith its tall buildings and crowded streets, Hong Kong is one of the last places you would expect to find a wild animal. But green sea turtles(绿甲海龟),have become regular visitor to beaches found in more peaceful peaceful of the metropolis(大都市).Over the last month, people living in Hong Kong and Hainan Province have been lucky enough to see the giant turtles lay their eggs on the beaches at night.Male turtles spend their entire lives in the sea. But every two to six years, the females swim thousands of miles from their feeding ground to lay eggs in their own birthplace.Unfortunately, few of the baby turtles survive(辛存)with only one in 1000 living into adulthood(成年).If they manage to grow big ,which takes 20 to 30 years, they can live for more than a century.Man is the main reason the turtles are dying out. The creature’s habitats are destroyed by finishing and pollution, while the turtles themselves are killed for food and leather. “Sea turtle eggs and meat saved us during Japan’s occupation(占领)of Hong Kong in World War II.”Said65-year-old resident Chan Kam-wan. But the days of eating turtle eggs have long since passed. Hong Kong banned the eating and sale of them in1976,hoping to help save the endangered(濒危的)creatures. In recent years, the government has closed beaches between June and October so the turtles can lay satellites. Through tracking the turtles, they hope to learn new ways of protecting them.Officials in Hong Kong recently finish a study on sea life in the area. They are considering setting up a sea park to protect the sea turtles from water pollution and illegal fishing.48.The purpose of writing the passage is to _________.A. call on people to protect turtlesB. tell us the living habits of turtlesC. tell us turtles travel a long way to lay eggs on the beachesD. emphasize the importance of studying turtles49.The turtles are dying out mainly because_________.A. the water where they are living is becoming worse and worseB. they can’t go with the changing conditionsC. of human activitiesD. too many of them have been killed50.Chan Kam-wan’s purpose of saying such words isto_________.A. praise turtles for its delicious tastes.B. introduce to people eating turtles has a long historyC. appreciate turtlesD. advise people not to forget that Japan was an enemy of the Chinese.51. Hong Kong people are animal-lover.CEverywhere there are plenty of pubs, in which people playdarts(飞镖),talk and drink, usually while standing up .Every pub has its name, its sign and its regulars, its customers who turn night after night. A few old pubs have real character but many are dull and ugly. It seems that the English think it rather indecent(不像样的) for people to drink alcoholic drinks in any place where they can be seen from outside. So pubs usually not only have no tables outside, but also are so built that it is impossible for people outside to see in, or for those who are inside to see out. There are exceptions to this, but not many. Pubs are meeting places for working men after the evening meal. With pint glasses filled with beer—in Scotland the national drink is whisky—they argue about football, the races, cars. The traditional pub was a place for the men only. But things have changed, and more and more pubs are now places where men and women sit at tables, and they often provide good lunches. Most of them have a public bar, where drinks are slightlycheaper, and a saloon bar, which middle—class people usually prefer because it is more comfortable and less crowed.53.This passage mainly tells us about___________.A. drinking habits of the EnglishB. poor conditions in pubsC. what pubs are like in the UKD. why pubs are special for men54.We can infer(推断) from the text that___________.A. many of the pubs are of no characterB. you can often see people drinking outside the pubsC. you can easily see people inside the pubs from the outsidesD. people inside the pubs can see what’s happening outside55.The underlined word “regulars” in the text refers to__________.A. rules in the pubB. people who often go to the same pubC. people which have real charactersD. dull and ugly pubs56.People go to the pubs mainly because of their___________.A. whiskyB. mealsC. surroundingsD. atmosphereDWalking may be healthy exercise , but going for a stroll in Florida can often be deadly.Four of the five city areas considered(认为)the most dangerous for pedestrians(行人) are in Florida, with the Tampa region leading the list, according to a study released(公布) Thursday by the Surface Transportation Policy Project, a Washington—based environmental group that advocates(提倡) alternatives to driving.Analyzing(分析) federal data from 1997and 1998,the group found Atlanta was the second most dangerous urban area(区域) for walking, followed by three in Florida: Miami, Orlando andJack—sonville.

In 1994, he made a decision to the ancient Chinese characters available online. Taking advantage of his professional skill, Sears started programming and building a database of oracle bone inscriptions on his own. It took him seven years just to scan the characters in Chineseancient books. In 2002, the Jiaguwen enthusiast's website was launched, though with only a few page views per day in the beginning. However, it surged to 600,000 per day in 2011 after a blogger recommended the site on Chinese social media platform Weibo."I became a web celebrity overnight and was given a nickname 'Uncle Hanzi,'" Sears said with a smile. Hanzi means Chinese characters.During the past 26 years, he has accumulated a great deal of information on his website -- more than 96,000 ancient Chinese character forms from archeological sources. Up till now, the website has been continuously updated, giving lovers of the ancient language from all over the world free access to browse at their leisure. In order to reveal the mystery behind the ancient characters, he spent a great deal of money and time buying and going through dozens of books, living on a shoestring.Since the end of last year, Sears has been working with a Chinese technology company on a smart phone application for children to learn about how the characters evolved. The app is expected to be launched next year.24.Which of the following is rue of oracle bone inscriptions?.A.They used to spread to other countries in Europe.B. Surely only humans could be capable of "episodic" memories — recalling a trip to the grocery store last Saturday, for example. We now know that we were mistaken — and a study from the animal world might even help us improve how we treat Alzheimer’s disease(阿兹海默症).Crystal and her students conducted a study of whether animals are capable of episodic memory. First, they trained 13 rats to memorize 12 odours(气味). They built a special rat “area” with 12 stops, numbered 1 to 12, each scented with a different odour. When the rat identified the odour in a particular stop on the route, such as second-to-last or fourth-to-last, it received a reward. Then the researchers changed the number of odours and watched to see if the training had taken hold: would the rats identify the second-to-last and fourth-to-last odour in the sequence(次序), even if the number of odours was different? This ensured that the rats were identifying the odours according to their position in the sequence, not just by smell. "We wanted to know if the animals can remember a lot of items and the order in which those items occur," Crystal said. After a year of these tests, the team found that the rats succeeded in the task about 87 percent of the time. Further tests confirmed that their memories stuck with them, and wasn’t influenced by other memories. The new genetic tools such as gene-editing allow scientists to create rats with an Alzheimer’s-like condition, making them the perfect subjects to test new Alzheimer’s drugs. In the United States alone, the number of people suffering from Alzheimer’s will increase from 5.8 million today to 14 million by 2050 as the population ages. If rats with episodic memory can help to break the Alzheimer’s code, this thief of the past might finally be defeated.28. Which of the following can be an "episodic" memory?A. To work out math problems.B. To imagine a future scene.C. To recall an early experience.D. To speak out a person’s name.29.How did the rats get their reward in the experiment?A. By finishing the twelve stops.B. By making out the smell in a specific stop.C. By drawing a circle in their position.D. By identifying the name of different odours.30.What did Crystal’s team find about the rats?A. They could understand simple words.B. They could hold their attention for long.C. They could memorize the order of items.D. They are not influenced by disturbance.31.In which section of a magazine may this text appear?A. Entertainment.B. Art.C. Education.D. Science.DWhile the novel coronavirus is dangerous for everyone, it is particularly so for the first responders who are being exposed to the illness daily. In the US alone, almost 5,500 nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals have been infected with COVID-19. Unfortunately, of these, dozens have succumbed to the disease. Now, hospital workers worldwide may get some relief thanks to Spot, a semi-autonomous four-legged robot developed by Waltham, Massachusetts-based robotics company, Boston Dynamics.“Starting in early March, Boston Dynamics started receiving inquiries from hospitals asking if our robots could help minimize their staff 's exposure to COVID-19,” the company writes in a blog post. In response, the company reconfigured (改装)the 3-foot tall robot to operate as a mobile telemedicine platform, enabling healthcare providers to determine a patient's condition remotely. The first four-legged robot “dog” was working in the Brigham and Women's Hospital of Harvard University on April 9, 2020. Equipped with an iPad “face” and a two-way radio that allows for real-time conversation, Spot helps doctors to speak to patients without coming in contact with them.“With current practice at local hospitals, patients suspected to have COVID-19 are asked to line up in tents outside to answer questions and get initial assessments for temperature. This process requires up to five medical staff, placing those individuals at high risk of being exposed to the virus, ”Boston Dynamics explains. “With the use of a mobile robot, hospitals are able to reduce the number of necessary medical staff at the scene and conserve their limited PPE (personal protective equipment) supply.” The company says the doctors can even use Spot to talk to patients from the safety of their own homes.Though Spot has already proved extremely helpful, the robotics manufacturer believes it can be even more so. The engineers are currently working on“teaching” the robot to perform tasks like temperature checks. The company is also developing new technology that will allow Spot to aid in the disinfection (消毒)of hospitals as well as other public areas.32. What does the underlined phrase “succumbed to” probably mean in the first paragraph?A. Suffered from.B. Recovered from.C. Died from.D. Resulted from.33. What will happen with the help of the robot?A. No medical workers will be needed at the scene.B. Medical workers will become much safer.C. Suspected patients needn't line up in tents.D. Medical workers won't be infected with viruses.34.What can Spot do at present?A .Communicating with the suspected patients.B .Checking a person's temperature in the clinic.C .Assisting people in the disinfection of hospitals.D .Showing people how to wear protective masks.35. Which of the following is the best title of the passage?A .Boston Dynamics Developed A Robot DogB .A Robot Was Developed to Assist DoctorsC .COVID -19 Virus Endangers Medical Workers D .Robot Dog Joins The Fight Against COVID-19.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

All too often the elderly end up sitting and looking at a wall or into a television. They're usually not motivated (有积极性的) to exercise, partly because getting moving again after a long period of inactivity can cause pain, and partly because it's not interesting to sit and look at a wall while you bike.A new research project from Aalborg University in Denmark may have the solution: virtual reality (VR). The project, led by Jon Ram Bruun-Pedersen, uses the technology to get the elderly on exercise bikes, thus turning exercise into a virtual experience. In Bruun-Pedersen's study, large TV screens were set up in front of the exercise bikes in the nursing home's activity room. While they biked, the 21 seniors rode through various virtuallandscapes on the TV screen. The bikes were connected with the screens so the speed the subjects biked with was related to their speed through the landscape.“The study showed that seniors were happy with the experience and really lived it,”says Bruun-Pedersen. “They felt as if they had to ride harder to get up the hill on the screen.”Next, the elderly subjects wore VR glasses with small screens in front of their eyes. The feeling is very true to life, and the elderly subjects vividly (逼真地) experienced being out in the great outdoors — even though they were still on an exercise bike in the activity room.“We set the study up so the elderly could ride in the same landscapes they knew from the screens. They took to the experience amazingly well,” Bruun-Pedersen said. “The seniors' desire to use the exercise bikes greatly in creased.”“This is really good,” he says. “Partly because it's good for them physically to move more, but also because I wanted them to experience getting out in the world — even if it's a virtual world.”24. According to the text, what is a reason why the elderly seldom move around?A. They are not in good health.B. They are afraid of getting hurt.C. Doing exercise may be painful.D. It's more interesting to watch TV.25. What can we infer(推断)about the seniors' experience in Bruun-Pedersen's study?A. The VR glasses helped them bike easier and faster.B. They tried to avoid moving around in the outdoors.C. They had to ride harder when climbing a virtual hill.D. The faster they biked the quicker they traveled on screen.26. What did the subjects of the study think of their virtual cycling tour?A. Enjoyable.B. Dangerous.C. Relaxing.D. Tiring.27. How is the text mainly developed?A. By giving examples.B. By making comparisons.C. By asking questions and answering them.D. By raising a problem and offering the solution.COld paintings are helping experts unlock a mystery about people from long ago. Experts say theart —and the pyramid —belonged to the Mayan civilization. A civilization is a society. The Mayas were native peoples who lived more than 1,000 years ago in what is now Mexico and Central America. The murals (壁画) are about 1,350 years old. So far, experts have discovered about 30 of them in Calakmul, Mexico. They show scenes of everyday Mayan life. It’s a side of the Mayas that has rarely been seen before, even though researchers have studied the civilization for about a century, says expert Michael Coe.“We never had anything like this be fore,”Coe explained. “This is something that’s completely new to us.”Most Mayan art shows how rulers and royalty (贵族) lived. The newly discovered murals are of regular citizens doing ordinary things, such as shopping and eating. One painting shows a woman selling tamales to a crowd of customers. Another is of people eating corn. Other murals show Mayan goods being transported to market. “Mostly you get the murals that show gods and kings, never anything about daily life,” Coe says. “This is like walking into a Mayan supermarket.”The Mayas were more than just painters. They developed their own form of math. They also studied science and the universe. The Mayas were writers, as well. They made books out of the bark (树皮) of fig trees. The civilization also came up with its own form of hieroglyphics. Some of the recently uncovered murals include hieroglyphics that label (标注) the people and objects with pictures. Thanks to the paintings, researchers have learned a few new hieroglyphics, including those for the words corn and salt. “Some of the hieroglyphics are still very hard to understand,” Simon Martin, one of the experts studying the symbols, explained. “I will be working on those and hope to understand them.”Scientists are busy excavating the rest of the pyramid. They’re not sure why the Mayas created the structure or the murals on it, but they hope to learn more as they continue to dig. Martin believes there are at least a dozen murals left to be discovered. The work will be slow going though. The ancient paintings must be treated with care so they’re not damaged. “It’s rare to find paintings like these in such good condition,” Martin said. “But we know that there are more still to be uncovered.”28. What did the experts discover in Mexico?A. Several Mayan books.B. Several houses of the Mayas.C. An ancient pyramid with murals.D. How the Mayas solved math problems.29. Why is the discovery special?A. Because experts have never found Mayan remains before.B. Because the murals show the achievements of the Mayas.C. Because experts have never seen Mayan cities before.D. Because the murals are about common people doing ordinary things.30. What can we infer(推断) from the text about the Mayas?A. They did not create a lot of art.B. They were a well-developed people.C. They cared more about painting than writing.D. They were not interested in math and science.31. What are hieroglyphics according to the text?A. Away to put up tall buildings.B. A game the Mayas invented.C. The design of Mayan paintings.D. A form of writing that uses pictures.DThe old farmhouse had been too big and too lonely since my husband Martin passed away. I wandered around the empty rooms searching for something to do. As a matter of fact, nothing was fun without Martin. My daughter Jane lived in another town about fifty miles away. It wasn’t a great distance, but she was busy with a job and two young boys. One morning, I saw a skinny little dog coming from behind the house. His tail and his head were lowered and he watched me with wary (警惕的) eyes as he slowly approached. If he hadn’t been so dirty he would have probably been white, but he was so caked with mud that it was hard to tell. Sighing, I cut up a few pieces of meat and put them on a paper plate and filled a bowl with water before going back outside. At the sound of the screen door, the dog lifted his head, a hopeful look in his chocolate eyes. I placed my offerings at the edge of the porch (门廊) and watched him for a moment. He eyed the plate of meat hungrily and lifted one paw ( 爪) as if to step forward, but he was afraid. I went back inside the house, knowing he would quickly eat the food once he felt safe. When I went out to get the mail I saw that the dog was asleep on my porch. I looked through the mail, feeling certain that I would find a card from Jane. Saturday had been my birthday. Obviously, she had been too busy to come by or call. I found no card from Jane.I sat down in the rocker (摇椅) on my porch and started to cry. Suddenly I felt a rough tongue licking my hand. Surprised, I looked into the upturned face of the dirty dog. His front paws rested on the arms of the rocker, and his expressive brown eyes seemed to be filled with understanding. He had such a sincere, concerned look on his little face that I found myself smile down at him and pat his head. He gave a small whimper (呜咽声) as if to tell me that he also needed a little love and affection.I looked down at the dog, amazed that he had put aside his own suffering to offer me comfort. He had been on his own, alone, hungry and afraid. He had no way of knowing how I might react to his display (展示) of affection. He could have been driven away and shouted at, but he gave me what he sensed I needed. He was smelly, but at that moment he was the most attractive dog I had ever seen. I thought that Martin would be a good name for this warm, friendly dog. Now I still wish Jane would visit or call more often. But I am no longer consumed by it. Martin has put joy back into my heart again. I found a purpose to live in Martin. He has filled the lonely, sad void in my life.32. Which of the following could be used to describe the dog when the author first saw him?A. Carefree and beautiful.B. Trustworthy but unlucky.C. Dirty and smelly.D. Clever but unfriendly.33. Why did the author cry?A. Because she missed Martin.B. Because Jane forgot her birthday.C. Because the dog wouldn’t leave her house.D. Because she had too much mail to address.34. How did the author feel when the dog licked her hand?A. She felt impressed by the dog’s bravery.B. She felt greater loneliness than ever before.C. She was surprised and a little bit frightened.D. She was deeply moved by the connection with him.35. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “consumed” in the last paragraph?A. Approved.B. Annoyed.C. Affected.D.
