A Probe into the writing techniques of Pride and Prejudice(书名要斜

体)

Although the author used the third person describing different marriage of the daughters of Mrs. Bennet (论文里不能出现缩写’s)without any direct comments on anyone, she has portrayed her own view by creating different characters and designing different ending for them. So (不能出现第一人称,I we 都不行,只能用the author, the writer.去掉)this passage will analyze the writing techniques to get to know how the author expressed her view in the story.

The main wring techniques are contrast and irony in the works. Contrast

The writer made comparison between the marriage of Elizabeth(不能出现缩写,只能用of所有格,自己把后面的改了) and the one of others on purpose, so readers can manage to catch a glimpse of it on the basis of their marriage especially.

The marriage of Elizabeth-----with both love and money. We believe that Elizabeth longs for pure and sincere love, but she has to confront her marriage with careful consideration to wealth on account of a lack of the right of inheritance. Elizabeth would not accept his second proposal without a moment’s hesitation, if Darcy were not as rich as the author described. With regard to their love, we could not find fault with anything.

Darcy has poor ability to control his innate arrogance, and Elizabeth’s prejudice is also inevitable that is due to her self-esteem and Wickham’s deception. Their character finally clashes with each other in the first proposal. At that time, Darcy can’t forget his superiority his family offers, for example, “His sense of her inferiority-----of its being a degradation……”and of course, Elizabeth shows her discontents directly, too. Fortunately, after that, Darcy gets to think about what Elizabeth criticized, and he is willing to overcome his biggest shortcoming-----arrogance. Likewise, when Elizabeth has read the letter accounting for Wickham’s lies and found his great change in his grounds at Pemberley, she is touched enough to put aside the prejudice against him. Darcy spares no effort to contribute to Lydia’s marriage later, so Elizabeth loves him more. Their love is a satisfactory (eventful是多事之秋的意思) story for both pride and prejudice. But it is pride and prejudice that become their intangible but the most precious wealth, which indicates how great the other side has changed for him or her and how deep and precious their love is. Finally, all the reader s witness their wonderful ending, namely a happy marriage based on sincere love, after they have experienced a series of emotional obstacles.

The marriage of Jane----with love and similar interest. For them, except for some obstruction because of Darcy, everything is going smoothly, and it is hard to find a more wonderful ending in real life.

However, it is the natural process without any trouble that reduces the value of their marriage.

The marriage of Charlotte -----with money but without love. Just as the author described in the first part, “Mr. Collins to be sure was neither sensible nor agreeable; his society was irksome, and his attachment to her must be imaginary. But still, he would be her husband…and however uncertain of giving happiness, must be her pleasantest preservative from want.” A marriage based on money instead of love is impossible to bring happiness, and Charlotte’s life just confirms it. We have no right to make any comment on her, supposing it were not for the cruel reality, she would not be obliged to give in to fate.

The marriage of Lydia -----with beauty and sexuality. Wickham just does not resist any opportunity of having a companion in the course of escape. And he is so eager to get the money Darcy offered that he agrees to get married. Unfortunately, Lydia is too silly to realize it. She looks as if she never doubt s her husband’s capability to satisfy her material needs and to bring her happiness. Their marriage is doomed to be a tragedy from the start.

Author’s position seems clear about these different marriages. Elizabeth’s marriage was described in a positive tone of voice and so was Jane’s. And the former is the most satisfactory getting the most compliment. But in contrast, the author treated Charlotte and Lydia with

an opposite attitude. So we can understand her view of marriage she expressed easily. She emphasized that sincere love is ideal marriage’s solid foundation. In a marriage only with fame and wealth, the couple could not resonate with each other, and their marriage is bound to be unhappy. Similarly, in a marriage only with beauty and sexuality, their love can’t last long and end up getting themselves into trouble even involving their families.

Irony

The dialogues are filled with irony, and what Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth said show the characteristic on behalf of others.

When faced his stupid wife with uncertain temper, Mr. Bennet always answered her in an ironic tone of voice. For example, “or you may send them by themselves, for, as you are as handsome as any of them, Mr Bingley might like you the best of the party.” Mr. Bennet want s to make a dig at Mrs. Bennet originally, but his wife is not smart enough to understand his meaning. “You mistake me, my dear; I have a high respect for your nerves. They are my old fiends. I have heard you mention them with consideration these twenty years at least.”“Don’t keep coughing so, Kitty, for heaven’s sake! Have a little compassion on my nerves.” (Mrs, Bennet) “Kiiy has no discretion in her cough,” said her father. “She times them ill.” His tone of voice sounds very ordinary, but we can’t feel little gentleness. These words without any anger are the most powerful reply to

his wife’s endless chatter, which has showed his dissatisfaction in the inner heart. Obviously, the intangible irony was described by the author on purpose.

What Elizabeth said is always sharp, too. For instance, in the story, Lady Catherine tries to stop her to marry Darcy, but on the contrary, it’s her contemptible behaviour that make s them understand each other’s inner thoughts. In retrospect, Elizabeth said with a smile, “Lady Catherine has been of infinite use, which ought to make her happy, for she loves to be of use.” the words contain the meaning of pleasure, but “to help others” isn’t Lady Catherine’s purpose, “to loves to help” isn’t her style, so what Elizabeth said make a dig at Lady Catherine.

On the one hand, the author formed her own unique style of writing in the form of irony, but above all, the author criticized those marriage s with fame and wealth or with beauty and sexuality. Mrs. Bennet, Lady Catherine even Charlotte are dazzled at these wrong concepts. Therefore, it should be taken for granted that they are all victims of irony.

There is no author’s sound in the book, but her shadow is at everywhere. Or, more specifically, she is like a leader. Maybe she is leading us into her world with a rope from the beginning, and contrast in marriage and irony in words are just the amazing rope.

The Disillusion of American Dream in Death of a Salesman 11425203 Franklin showed the people by aphorism and even his experiences, the myth that as long as you hard work,it is possible to achieve the American dream of fame and fortune. And his 13 virtues, which brought him great success, has made many ambitious young men regard it as the motto, they are doing Cinderella-like dream, a dream to one day become a prince. Later,American Dream becomes one of the most important themes in American literature,it convinces people that if they work hard, everyone can get rich. However, the harsh reality broke many people's American Dream into pieces, resulting in a series of tragedy. Many writers in American literature attempt to reveal the illusion of American Dream through their works, to explore the conflict between the reality and the American Dream.Among them, Arthur Miller's play Death of a Salesman reveals the illusory American dream by analyzing the reasons of the character,Willy Loman’s death. It has exposed some of the ills of American society, crushing the myth that "everyone can be successful." When I read the brief introduction of this book, there is a question constantly around me.Why Willy chose to commit suicide finally? But when I finished this book,I find the answer.Perhaps because of the sever reality,Perhaps when hopes dashed , Willy’s heart can no longer afford.Willy Loman is the play's tragic figure. His tragedy is to own his wrong values tightly, and can not face the reality. His whole lifetime is spent in the whole dream , as well died resulting from the wrong dream . As far as I am concerned,Willy represents his class, so he's tragedy is also the unfortune of a group of people who are holding the successful dream. As his name, Lowman ,implies that he belongs to the low-rise character of society. He has nothing. As a salesman,he has no pay, only led commission. He just sells other people's stuff and he convinces that as long as likable, charming, the door of the world is open to him. His life is built on such dreams. He admires David Sigelman very much because David sells products successfully and he does not have to leave the hotel, only a phone call can bring him a successful deal. When he died at the 84-year-old age, there are so many consumers and companions take part in his funeral procession. So Willy always lives in a world of his own imagination, considering the fantasy as the reality, and often boasts. As he said “I’m the New England man.I’m vital in New England.”Regardless of the fact that his products are unwelcomed,he boasts how important he is in New England and how high his sales volume is.Consequently,he falls into his own lie and can never escape. What’s more,to his son,Biff Loman,he also tries his best to instill the thinking:As
