2021年6月大学英语六级深度阅读理解(2)第一篇 (Unit one Passage 1)I live in the land of Disney, Hollywood and year-round sun. You may think people in such a glamorous, fun-filled place are happier than others. If so, you have some mistaken ideas about the nature of happiness. Many intelligent people still equate happiness with fun. The truth is that fun and happiness have little or nothing in common. Fun is what we experience during an act. Happiness is what we experience after an act. It is a deeper, more abiding emotion.Going to an amusement park or ball game, watching a movie or television, are fun activities that help us relax, temporarily forget our problems and maybe even laugh. But they do not bring happiness, because their positive effects end when the fun ends.I have often thought that if Hollywood stars have a role to play, it is to teach us that happiness has nothing to do with fun. These rich, beautiful individuals have constant access to glamorous parties, fancy cars, expensive homes, everythingthat spells “happiness”. But in memoir after memoir, celebrities reveal the unhappiness hidden beneath all their fun: depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, broken marriages, troubled children and profound loneliness.Ask a bachelor why he resists marriage even though he finds dating to be less and less satisfying. If he’s honest, he will tell you that he is afraid of making a commitment. For commitment is in fact quite painful. The single life is filled with fun, adventure and excitement. Marriage has such moments, but they are not its most distinguishing features.Similarly, couples that choose not to have children are deciding in favor of painless fun over painful happiness. They can dine out ever they want and sleep as late as they want. Couples with infant children are lucky to get a whole night’s sleep or a three-day vacation. I don’t know any parent who would choose the word fun to describe raising children.Understanding and accepting that true happiness has nothing to do with fun is one of the most liberating realizations we can ever come to. It liberates time: now we can devote more hours to activities that can genuinely increase our happiness. It liberates money: buying that new car or those fancy clothes that will do nothing to increase our happinessnow seems pointless. And it liberates us from envy: we now understand that all those rich and glamorous people we were so sure are happy because they are always having so much fun actually may not be happy at all.1.Which of the following is true?A.Fun creates long-lasting satisfaction.B.Fun provides enjoyment while pain leads to happiness.C.Happiness is enduring whereas fun is short-lived.D.Fun that is long-standing may lead to happiness.2.To the author, Hollywood stars all have an important role to play that is to __.A.rite memoir after memoir about their happiness.B.tell the public that happiness has nothing to do with fun.C.teach people how to enjoy their lives.D.bring happiness to the public instead of going to glamorous parties.3.In the author’s opinion, marriage___.A.affords greater fun.B.leads to raising children.C.indicates commitment.D.ends in pain.4.Couples having infant children___.A.are lucky since they can have a whole night’s sleep.B.find fun in tucking them into bed at night.C.find more time to play and joke with them.D.derive happiness from their endeavor.5.If one get the meaning of the true sense of happiness, he will__.A.stop playing games and joking with others.B.make the best use of his time increasing happiness.C.give a free hand to money.D.keep himself with his family.第一篇答案:CBCDB。

第一篇原文:Growing up, a lot of my free time was spent exploring the woods behind my house or playing sports in my backyard. It was during these hours outdoors that I became comfortable with being alone or "bored". I developed a sense of independence and creativity that I fear many children today may be missing out on.Nowadays, kids are constantly surrounded by technology. Smartphones, tablets, and video games have become their main source of entertainment. While technology certainly has its advantages, it can also hinder children's ability to think independently and creatively.By constantly providing children with entertainment and stimulation, technology eliminates the need for them to come up with their own ideas. When they are constantly occupied with screens, they don't have the chance to let their imagination run wild or to simply be bored and let their minds wander.Boredom may sound like a negative experience, but it actually plays an important role in developing creativity. When children are bored, they are forced to use their imaginations to come up with ways to entertain themselves. They might create a game, build a fort, or invent a new dancemove. These moments of boredom can lead to new discoveries and foster a sense of independence. In addition to promoting creativity, boredom also allows for reflection and self-discovery. When children are left alone with their thoughts, they have the opportunity to think deeply about their interests, goals, and dreams. Without the constant distraction of technology, they can better understand themselves and what truly matters to them.So how can we ensure that children have enough opportunities for boredom and creativity in a world dominated by technology? One solution is to limit their screen time. Setting boundaries and encouraging outdoor play or engaging in creative activities can help children develop their imagination and independence.Parents and educators can also play a crucial role in fostering creativity. By providing children with open-ended toys and materials, they encourage them to think creatively and invent their own games. They can also encourage children to pursue outdoor activities, such as gardening or hiking, which allow for exploration and independent thinking. In conclusion, while technology offers many benefits, it is important to recognize the value of boredom and creativity in a child's development. By limiting screen time and promoting activities that foster independence and imagination, we can help children develop important skills for the future.

Real policemen hardly recognize any resemblance between their lives and what they see on TV —if they everget home in time. There are similarities, of course, but the cops don't think much of them. The first difference is that a policeman's real life revolves round the law. Most of his training is in criminal law. He has to know exactly what actions are crimes and what evidence can be used to prove them in court. He has to know as a professional lawyer, and what is more, he has to apply it on his feet, in the dark and rain, running down an alley after someone he wants to talk to.Little of his time is spent in chatting to scantily-clad (穿衣不多的) ladies or in dramatic confrontationswith desperate criminals. He will spend most of his working life typing millions of words on thousands of forms about hundredsof sad, unimportant people who are guilty —or not —of stupid, petty crimes. Most television crime drama is about finding the criminal: as soon as he's arrested, the story is over. i real life, finding criminals is seldom much of a problem. Except in very serious cases like murders and terrorist attacks — where failure to produce results reflects on the standing of the police —little effortis spent on searching.Having made an arrest, a detective really starts to work. He has to prove his case in court and to do thathe often has to gather a lot of different evidence. 英语四六级阅读理解习题(总7页) -本页仅作为预览文档封面,使用时请删除本页-The "standard of living" of any country means the average person's share of the goods and services which the country produces. A country's standard of living, therefore, depends first and foremost on its capacity to produce wealth. "Wealth" in this sense is not money, for we do not live on money but on things that money can buy: "goods" such as food and clothing, and "services" such as transport and entertainment.A country's capacity to produce wealth depends upon many factors, most of which have an effect on one another. Wealth depends to a great extent upon a country's natural resources, such as coal, gold, and other minerals, water supply and so on. Some regions of the world are well supplied with coal and minerals, and have a fertile soil and a favorable climate; other regions possess perhaps only one of these things, and some regions possess none of them. The U. S. A is one of the wealthiest regions of the world because she has vast natural resources within her borders, her soil is fertile, and her climate is varied. The Sahara Desert, on the other hand, is one of the least wealthy.Next to natural resources comes the ability to turn them to use. China is perhaps as well off as the U. S. A. in natural resources, but suffered for many years from civil and external wars, and for this and other reasons was. unable to develop her resources. Sound and stable political conditions, and freedom from foreign invasion, enable a country to develop its natural resources peacefully and steadily, and to produce more wealth than another country equally well served by nature but less well ordered. Another important factor is the technical efficiency of a country's people. Old countries that have, through many centuries, trained up numerous skilled craftsmen and technicians are better placed to produce wealth than countries whose workers are largely unskilled. Wealth also produces wealth. As a country becomes wealthier, its people have a large margin for saving, and can put their savings into factories and machines which will help workers to turn out more goods in their working day.1. A country's wealth depends upon______. ,A. its standard of livingB. its moneyC. its ability to provide goods and servicesD. its ability to provide transport and entertainment2. It has been known to man for at least 3,000 years, but has ___2___ into common use only in ___3___times. Until quite recently it was considered as a medicine and as a luxury for the very rich only.Sugar is, then, ___4 ___to our civilization. But what___5___ is it Of course, most of us recognize sugar immediately as the sweet material which we put in coffee or cakes. This common form of sugar is derived from two plants: the sugar cane (a type of grass which grows to a height of twenty feet) and the sugar beet (which grows under ground). But there are in fact many types of sugar, and the chemist recognizes hundreds of different___6___ , each coming from a different source.About 90% of the sugar is produced as food. Only 10% is used in industry for___7___other than food production. Yet sugar has great possibilities for use as the basis of chemicals. It can even be used for making plastics. In the future these potential uses will certainly be developed more than in the past.来源:考试大的美女编辑们There are many reasons why we should ___8___the production of sugar. Every normal person is expert in the skill of pronouncing his own language; but few people are even moderately proficient at pronouncing foreign languages. Now there are many reasons for this, some obvious, some perhaps not so obvious. But I suggest that the fundamental reason why people in general do not speak foreign languages very much better than they do is that they fail to grasp the true nature of the problem of learning to pronounce, and consequently never set about tackling it in the right way. Far too many people fail to realize that pronouncing a foreign language is a skill—one that needs careful training of a special kind, and one that cannot be acquired by just leaving it to take care of itself. I think even teachers of language, while recognizing the importance of a good accent, tend to neglect, in their practical teaching, the branch ofstudy concerned with speaking the language. So the first point I want to make is that English pronunciation must be taught; the teacher should be prepared to devote some of the lesson time to this, and should get the student to feel that here is a matter worthy of receiving his close attention. So, there should be occasions when other aspects of English, such as grammar or spelling, are allowed for the moment to take second place.Apart from this question of the time given to pronunciation, there are two other requirements for the teacher: the first, knowledge; the second, technique. It is important that the teacher should be in possession of the necessary information. This can generally be obtained from books. It is possible to get from books some idea of the mechanics of speech, and of what we call general phonetic theory. It is also possible in this way to get a clear mental picture of the relationship between the sounds of different languages, between the speech habits of English people and those, say, of your students. Unless the teacher has such a picture, any comments he may make on his students' pronunciation are unlikely to be of much use, and lesson time spent on pronunciation may well be time wasted.26. What does the writer actually say about pronouncing foreign languages?A. Only a few people are really proficient.B. No one is really an expert in the skill.C. There aren't many people who are even fairly good.D. There are even some people who are moderately proficient.27. The writer argues that going about the problem of pronunciation in the wrong way isA. an obvious cause of not grasping the problem correctlyB. a fundamental consequence of not speaking wellC. a consequence of not grasping the problem correctlyD. not an obvious cause of speaking poorly28. The best way of learning to speak a foreign language, he suggests, is by_______.A. picking it up naturally as a childB. learning from a native speakerC. not concentrating on pronunciation as suchD. undertaking systematic work考试大-全国最大教育类网站(www.Examda。

Meditation in Indonesian Business It looked like a typical business meeting. Six men, neatly dressed in white shirts and ties filed into the boardroom of a small Jakarta company and sat down at a long table. But instead of consulting files or hearing reports, they closed their eyes and began to meditate, consulting the spirits of ancient Javanese kings. Mysticism touches almost every aspect of life in Indonesia and business is no exception. One of the meditators said his weekly meditation sessions are aimed mainly at bringing the peace of mind that makes for good decision-making. But the insight gained from mystic communication with spirits of wise kings has also helped boost the profits of his five companies. Mysticism and profits have come together since the 13th century introduction of Islam to Indonesia by Indian Moslem merchants. Those devout traders, called ‘Wali Ullah’ or ‘those close to God, ’ energetically spread both trade and religion by adapting their appeals to the native mysticism of Java. Legends attribute magic power of foreknowledge to the Wali Ullah. These powers were believed to be gained through meditation and fasting. Businessman Hadisiko said his group fasts and meditates all night every Thursday to become closer to God and to contact the spirits of the great men of the past. ‘If we want to employ someone at the managerial level, we meditate together and often the message comes that this man can’t hole onto money or he is untrustworthy. Or maybe the spirits will tell us he should be hired.’ Hadiziko hastened to add that his companies also hold modern personnel management systems and that formal qualifications are essential for a candidate even to be considered. Perspective investments also are considered through mystic meditation. ‘With the mind relaxed and open, it is easier to be objective in judging the risk of a new venture. Meditation and contact with the wisdom of the old leaders sharpens your own insight and intuition. Then you have to apply that intuition to the information you have and work hard to be successful. ’ Mystic meditation helped reverse a business slide his companies experienced in the mid-1980. Operating with normal business procedures, he lost more than $ 3 millions in that year alone. Meditation brought back his peace of mind. Putting the right persons in the right jobs and gaining confidence in his business decisions were the keys to a turning around that has brought expansion and profitability. The mysticism in Handspike’s boardroom is part of a growing movement in Indonesia called Kebatinan – the ‘search for the inner self.’One of his managers, Yusuf Soemado, who studied business administration at Harvard University, compared the idea of mystic management to westernsystem of positive thinking. ‘Willpower and subconscious mind are recognized as important factors in business. Such approaches as psycho-cybernetics, Carnegie’s think and growth rates, or the power of positive thinking are western attempts to tap the same higher intelligence that we contact through meditation,’ he said. Q: 1.What is the most important factor in their doing business? [A] Mysticism. [B]Religion. [C] Meditation. [D] Investment. 2.Whom do they consult? [A] The spirits of ancient Javanese kings. [B]Wali Ullah. [C] Old Kings. [D] Carnegie. 3.Why did Hadisike hasten to add ‘his companies also hold modern personnel management systems…’? [A] He thought Mysticism was not so good as expected. [B]To show they too focused on qualifications. [C] To show they hired qualified persons. [D] To show the possibility of combination of the scientific management with religion. 4.According to the passage, the function of the meditation is [A] to gain profit from the god. [B]to gain peace of mind to make decision. [C] to gain foreknowledge. [D] to gain objective conclusion. 5.What does ‘operating with normal business procedures’ refer to? [A] Adopting the western way of doing business. [B]Ordinary way of doing business without meditation and fasting. [C] Contact with God. [D] Putting right persons in the right jobs. ⽂章难译点:建议答完题后再看. 四级第二套Section CPassage OneQuestions 57 to 61 are based on the following passage.Across the rich world, well-educated people increasingly work longer than the less-skilled.Some 65% of American men aged 62-74 with a professional degree are in the workforce, compared with 32% of men with only a high-school certificate. This gap is part of a deepening divide between the well-educatedwell-off and the unskilled poor.Rapid technological advance has raised the incomes of the highly skilled while squeezing those of the unskilled. The consequences, for individuals and society, are profound. The world is facing an astonishing rise in the of old people, and they will live longer than ever before.Over the next 20 years the global population of those aged 65 or more will almost double, from 600 million to 1.1 billion. The experience of the 20th century, when greater longevity(长寿)translated into more years in retirement rather than more years at work, has persuaded many observers that this shift will lead to slower economic growth, while the swelling ranks of pensioners will create government budget problems. But the notion of a sharp division between the working young and the idle old misses a new trend, the growing gap between the skilled and the unskilled.Employment rates are failing amongyounger unskilled people, whereas older skilled folk are working longer. The divide is most extreme in America, where well-educated baby-boomers(二战后生育高峰期出生旳美国人)areputting off retirement while many less-skilled younger people have abandoned policies that used Xto retire early.Rising life expectancy(预期生命),combined with the replace- Xpension plans with less generous defined-contribution ones, means that even the better-off must work longer to have a comfortable retirement. But the changing nature of work also plays a big role.Pay has risen sharply for the highly educated, and those people continue to reap rich rewards into old age because these days the educated elderly are more productive that the preceding generation.Technological charge may well reinforce that shift; the skills that complement computers, from management knowhow to creativity, do not necessarily decline with age.57.What is happening in the workforce in rich countries?A.Younger people are replacing the elderly.B.Well-educated people tend to work longer.C.Unemployment rates are rising year after year.D.People with no collage degree do not easily find work.【答案】B58.What has helped deepen the divide between the well-off and the poor?A.Longer life expectancies.B.A rapid technological advance.C.Profound changes in the workforce.D.A growing number of the well-educated.【答案】B59.What do many observers predict in view of the experience of the experience of the 20th century?A.Economic growth will slow down.ernment budgets will increase.C.More people will try to pursue higher education.D.There will be more competition in the job market.【答案】A60.What is the result of policy changes in European countries?A.Unskilled workers may choose to retire early.B.Morepeople have to receive in-service training.C.Even wealthy people must work longer to live comfortably in retirement.D.Peoplemay be able to enjoy generous defined-benefits from pension plans.【答案】C61.What is characteristic of work in the 21st century?puters will do more complicated work.B.More will be the educated young.C.Most jobs to be done will be creative ones.D.Skills are highly valued regardless of age.【答案】DPassage TwoQuestions 62 to 65 are based on the following passage. Some of the world's most sign significant problems hit headlines. One example comes from agriculture.Food riots and hunger make news. But the trend lying behind these matters is rarely talked about. This is the decline in the growth in yields of some of the world's major crops.A new study by the University of Minnesota and McGill University in Montreal looks at where, and how far, this decline is occurring. The authors take a vast number of data points for the four most important crops: rice, wheat, corn and soyabeans(大豆).They find that on between 24% and 39% of all harvested areas, the improvement in yields that took place before the 1980s slowed down in the 1990s and 2023s. There are two worrying features of the slowdown. One is that it has been particularly sharp in the world's most populous(人口多旳)countries, India and China.Their ability to feed themselves has been an important source of relative stability both within the countries and on world foodmarkets. That self-sufficiency cannot be taken for granted if yields continue to slow down or reverse.Second, yield growth has been lower in wheat and rice than in corn and soyabeans. This is problematic because wheat and rice are more important as foods, accounting for around half of all calories consumed.Corn and soyabeans are more important as feed grains. The authors note that "we have preferentially focused our crop improvement efforts on feeding animals and cars rather than on crops that feed people and are the basis of food security in much of the world." The report qualifies the more optimistic findings of another new paper which suggests that the world will not have to dig up a lot more land for farming in order to feed 9 billion people in 2050, as the Food and Agriculture Organisation has argued.Instead, it says, thanks to slowing population growth, land currently ploughed up for crops might be able to revert(回返)to forest or wilderness. This could happen. The trouble is that the forecast assumes continued improvements in yields, which may not actually happen.62.What does the author try to draw attention to?A.Food riots and hunger in the world.B.The decline of the grain yield growth.C.News headlines in the leading media.D.The food supply in populous countries.【答案】B63.Why does the author mention India and China in particular?A.Their self-sufficiency is vital to the stability of world food markets.B.Their food yields have begun to decrease sharply in recent years.C.Their big populations are causing worldwide concerns.D.Their food self-sufficiency has been taken for granted.【答案】A64.What does the new study by the two universities say about recent crop improvement efforts?A.They fail to produce the same remarkable results as before the 1980s.B.They contribute a lot to the improvement of human food production.C.They play a major role in guaranteeing the food security of the world.D.they focus more on the increase of animal feed than human food grains.【答案】D65.What does the Food and Agriculture Organisation say about world food production in the coming decades?A.The growing population will greatly increase the pressure on world food supplies.B.The optimistic prediction about food production should be viewed with caution.C.The slowdown of the growth in yields of major food crops will be reversed.D.The world will be able to feed its population without increasing farmland.【答案】D66.How does the author view the argument of the Food and Agriculture Organisation?A.It is built on the findings of a new study.B.It is based on a doubtful assumption.C.It is backed by strong evidence.D.It is open to further discussion.【答案】B四级第一套Section CPassage OneQuestion 57 to 61 are based on the following passage. If you think a high-factor sunscreen(防晒霜)keeps you safe from harmful rays, you may be wrong.Research in this week's Nature shows that while factor 50 reduces the number of melanomas(黑瘤)and delays their occurrence, it can't prevent them.Melanomas are the mostaggressive skin cancers. You have a higher risk if you have red or blond hair, fair skin, blue or green eyes, or sunburn easily, or if a close relative has had one.Melanomas are more common if you have periodic intense exposure to the sun.Other skin cancers are increasingly likely with long-term exposure. There is continuing debate as to how effective sunscreen is in reducing melanomas—the evidence is weaker than it is for preventing other types of skin cancer.A 2023 Australian study of 1,621 people found that people randomly selected to apply sunscreen daily had half the rate of melanomas of people who used cream as needed.A second study, comparing 1,167 people with melanomas to 1,101 who didn't have the cancer, found that using sunscreen routinely, alongside other protection such as hats, long sleeves or staying in the shade, did give some protection. This study said other forms of sun protection—not sunscreen—seemed most beneficial. The study relied on people remembering what they had done over each decade of their lives, so it's not entirely reliable. But it seems reasonable to think sunscreen gives people a false sense of security in the sun. Many people also don't use sunscreen properly-applying insufficient amounts, failing to reapply after a couple of hours and staying in the sun too long.It is sunburn that is most worrying-recent shows five episodes of sunburn in the teenage years increases the risk of all skin cancers. The good news is that a combination of sunscreen and covering up can reduce melanoma rates, as shown by Australian figures from their slip-slop-slap campaign. So if there is a heat wave this summer, it would be best for us, too, to slip on a shirt, slop on(抹上)sunscreen and slap on ahat.57.【题干】What is people's common expectation of a high-factor sunscreen?A.It will delay the occurrence of skin cancer.B.It will protect them from sunburn.C.It will keep their skin smooth and fair.D.It will work for people of any skin color.【答案】B58.【题干】What does the research in Nature say about a high-factor sunscreen?A.It is ineffective in preventing melanomas.B.It is ineffective in case of intense sunlight.C.It is ineffective with long-term exposure.D.It is ineffective for people with fair skin.【答案】C59.【题干】What do we learn from the 2023Australian study of 1,621 people?A.Sunscreen should be applied alongside other protection measures.B.High-risk people benefit the most from the application of sunscreen.C.Irregular application of sunscreen does women more harm than good.D.Daily application of sunscreen helps reduce the incidence of melanomas. 【答案】D60.【题干】What does the author say about the second Australian study?A.It misleads people to rely on sunscreen for protection.B.It helps people to select the most effective sunscreen.C.It is not based on direct observation of the subjects.D.It confirms the results of the first Australian study.【答案】D61.【题干】What does the author suggest to reduce melanoma rates?ing both covering up and sunscreen.B.Staying in the shade whenever possible.ing covering up instead of sunscreen.D.Applying the right amount of sunscreen.【答案】APassage 四级passage one全文翻译衰老和饮酒会对大脑造成相似的影响,那么,如果有氧运动可以减轻衰老对大脑造成的损害,它是否也能对酒精造成的伤害起到同样的作用呢?

How about trade?AdvertisementWhen the Commerce Department reported last week that the trade deficit in June spiked to nearly $50 billion, it set off a new round of economic doomsaying. Imports, which soared to $200.3 billion in the month, are subtracted in the calculation of gross domestic product. The larger the trade deficit, the smaller the GDP. ①Should such imbalances continue, pessimists say, they could contribute to a slowdown in growth.②But theres another way of looking at the trade data. O ver the past two years, the figures on imports and exports seem not to signal a double-dip recession-i.e., a renewed decline in the broad level of economic activity in the United States-but an economic expansion. In June, imports were $200.3 billion and exports were $150.5 billion-total trade in goods and services of $350.8 billion. In June 2009, by contrast, imports were $155 billion and exports were $128 billion-a total trade in goods and services of $283 billion. In other words, the volume of U.S. trade with other countries in June was up nearly 24 percent from the year before, with exports up 17.5 percent and imports up 29 percent. Trade is nowhere near its peak-in July 2008, when exports were $165 billion and imports were $232 billion, the monthly total was nearly $400 billion. But over the course of 2010, as the rate of economic growth hasslowed, trade has gained momentum. In June, exports were 5 percent higher than they were in December 2009, and imports were up 10.5 percent.。
