一、商务缩略语的定义
在古代，像其他语言的缩略语一样，英语缩略语多见于古币、徽章、图案和碑文，因 为要在这些小小的物体上刻划出较为复杂的内容，只能用缩略语。而这些古币、徽章、 图案的使用是因为商务交际的需要，可以说缩略语首先产生于商务这一语域中。缩略语 也曾作为一种记事的符号和密码。如希腊人曾将IHS 作Jesus (耶稣) 的象征，古罗马人 把RSP当作“古罗马的元老院”( Roman Senate and People) 的缩写语，把拉丁语Anno Domini (公元) 缩写为A. D. ，把ante meridiem 和post meridiem 分别缩写为a . m. 和p . m.，这类古老的缩略语早已进入了词典，广泛被人们所使用。同时由于缩略语的大力发 展，国际商务活动中买卖双方用电话交谈、发送电文，均要求简明扼要，便于记忆和记 录，国际传递与交际中也就省时节费。现代语言学家提出语言的经济性也正是这个道理 。因此,商务语域里的人们创造了大量缩略语，而且简化方式多样。如: B/L (Bill of Lading) 海运提单 BPC (Book Prices Current ) 现行账面价值 Kgs.
