The research, w hich w as carried out by Professor Adrian North of Heriot－Watt Uni v ersity，is said to be the largest such study e v er done.
Professor North described the research as significant and surprising. He said, “We ha v e al w ays suspected a link bet w een musical taste and personality. This is the first time that w e'v e been able to look at it in real detail. No one has e v er done this on this scale(规模) before.”
Professor North said the research could ha v e many uses in marketing, adding, “If you kno w a person's music preference you can tell w hat kind of person he/she is. There are ob v ious implications(暗指) for the music industry w ho are w orried about decreasing CD sales.”One of the most surprising things is the similarities bet w een fans of classical music and hea v y metal. They're both creati v e and at ease but not outgoing. The general public has held a stereotype of hea v y metal fans being depressed and of being a danger to themsel v es and society in general. But they are quite delicate things.
More than 36,000 people from all o v er the w orld w ere asked to rate 104 musical styles and also questioned about aspects of their personality. Professor North，w ho is the head of the uni v ersity's department of applied psychology, is still looking for people to fill in a short online questionnaire.
