摘 要上世纪中叶是科学技术飞速发展时期,新的科学理论和学科不断涌现,认识科学发展模式就成为了重要的哲学研究课题。
在此期间,自然主义、实用主义、逻辑实证主义三种思想在美国汇流,各种科学哲学思想此消彼长。
欧内斯特·内格尔就是身处这个时代的科学哲学家,他综合了三大思想的精髓,将其糅合成自己的语境论自然主义思想,提出了以还原论为核心的科学发展观。
内格尔认为,科学的目的就是用理论对外在世界进行系统解释,解释力和解释范围是判断科学进步的首要价值准则。
因此,高度统一的可以解释一切的终极科学理论成为科学研究的最终目标。
提出新理论一般使用类比方法,即借助于隐喻的表述方式,通过人们熟悉的模型对不熟悉的现象进行解释。
科学理论之间关系是十分紧密的,这种联系可以通过一定的逻辑规则表述出来,并用于将高度相关的理论归并成为一个理论体系,这套规则就是还原法则。
只有通过还原的方法才能使科学理论有效地结合在一起,科学最终将向统一性的理论迈进。
内格尔的科学进步理论具有逻辑的、线性的、连续的特征,还原论是其科学进步理论的核心思想。
在本体论上,内格尔是一个唯物主义者,他认为自然界是连续的和多样的,科学理论作为对自然界的解释也应该是连续的。
在认识论上,内格尔是工具主义和实在论的调和者,他一方面积极强调科学理论的实用性,另一方面又肯定不同领域的理论中的通用概念必然表征着客观实在。
在方法论上,内格尔提倡类比方法,批判归纳方法,约束演绎方法,强调逻辑的有效性是与其使用语境具有密切的联系。
可以说,内格尔的本体论是还原论的前提,认识论是还原论的基础,而方法论则是还原论的手段,这些都是与其还原论相一致的哲学思想。
内格尔的科学进步理论以及还原论都对后继哲学产生了重要的影响。
一方面,他对科学理论的逻辑性论证,为库恩、拉卡托斯等结构性的理论观做了基础性的工作。
