Donald：I’m Teacher Hazel . You can be Billy.
Mary：And？
Donald：Eric is Thomas. He cannot speak English.

Mary让Donald当老师，他就会用老师比较夸张的嘴形来教我们发音、提醒舌头的位置，久而久之他的发音就稳定下来，也同时纠正了我们的发音。

几个月以后，2000年1月在公共电视里直接有《大家说英语》的节目演出。
那时候Donald 认识书名上两个单词就买了杂志，学一点配乐和听出一两个单词就在听广播，这回我只是告诉他杂志上登载的节目会演出，他就很兴奋要看剧中人物的真面目。
Hazel、Billy、Thomas三位老师围坐在一张方形矮桌前面和观众打招呼，演三段会话。
电视教学节目一向就很多，Mary觉得既然要看就要主动有兴趣。
为了保持我们想学的心和热度，Mary的做法是让家里的电视机改成了交互式电视。
Mary不是等人家研发什么新设备，而是带着Donald坐在电视前面和老师打招呼，teacher一说：“Hi，everyone！I’m……”我们在电视前也和他挥挥手说：“Hi，Hazel. Hi，Billy.”把电视里的人当朋友，这样就能和整个节目融合在一起，当我们接受它带来的信息，就好像是朋友在和我们聊天一样自然。
在公园的亭子或是在朋友家，每天Donald都找一张小桌子来演杂志老师的对话，自从看了电视，可以学的东西更多了，Hazel老师的嘴形、手势，Donald都跟着做，多听几次他学会了开场白和“now，look today’s key words”，Donald在说开场白和教生词的这两句话后面，都要Mary配乐，配得不对也不行要重来。
后来他会自己编几个生词去当key words，有一个词组单元叫做Useful Phrase，屏幕会出现一支笔画出Useful Phrase ，Donald就会拿起笔来假装画草写。
跟着电视学表情和声调动作之后，Donald不甘寂寞，要当主讲的Hazel ，Mary就被指派当Billy.在小桌旁边演杂志，一边演一边念有个好处，可以整句整句讲，因为带有动作，可以加深印象。
简单地演一两句或是一些固定单元的用语，他会当老师演结束用语，要学老师轮流叫大家“Let’s talk in English on PTS or on the radio”（大家收看和收听节目）。
Eric因为不太和我们玩这些“小把戏”，也不好意思开口说英文，所以他是“美语生活家园”里被动的角色和道具。
Donald叫不动Eric，就叫他当Thomas.教学节目里都有说中文的老师问外籍老师一些问题，后者来解释。
Donald才4岁，信以为真，认为Thomas不会讲英文，所以让在旁边看报的爸爸当Thomas.可怜的Thomas老师被误会了一年，最近终于洗清冤屈了；有一个新单元Grammar Cop（文法警察），有人念错句子，Thomas吹哨子跑出来纠正他。

”Donald又不能一个词一个词地翻译，他会告诉你：“我可以说出它的意思。

这一点也不奇怪，我以前做学生背单词写翻译题目，却不会变化或是不能听到就马上明白，非要偷偷转换中文意思不可，这是因为紧张或是不能融入。
现在看Donald不管他有10个还是1000个单词能力的阶段，都是用情境来掌握意思和表达自己，所以没有因为单词少而不能用英文的问题。
他从ABC字母就同时经过听说读写演的流程。
和Donald一起听一起看，到一起扮演戏中的角色，在说英文的时候不要只想着自己的“我该怎么说”，让Mary丢掉包袱，用小孩子最单纯的方法，照着当时的心情，就会讲得很自然。
这一年经常碰到有人说：“我也听你的话看节目，可是看不懂，又放弃了。
”悄悄告诉你，Donald和Mary就是多了勇气去扮演，又没有要整篇都听得懂才能看。
Donald就是从仿真配乐、打招呼、再会和开场白开始的。
这些都是每天会重复的东西，加上我们自己的表演，学老师在电视上皱着眉头、假装拿放大镜的姿势找生词……Donald后来常说：“Let’s find out.”我也忘了为什么，直到最近他回答别人怎么看英语节目，他说：“当然本来是看不懂，常用的先知道，以前每天半小时里，有三个部分会说到Let’s find out，我看久了就会用find out 来表示查东西、找答案。
