Donald在学校学的发音,回来要怎么维持?答案是他来教Mary和Eric.这样子他会去记老师的念法。
我看过很多爸爸妈妈在小孩子放学一回来就问他:“这怎么念?不对,我教你’椅子’要念……”可是越教越糟。
Mary让Donald当老师,他就会用老师比较夸张的嘴形来教我们发音、提醒舌头的位置,久而久之他的发音就稳定下来,也同时纠正了我们的发音。
有些单词他明明就记错了,念得很奇怪,又不肯承认,我们就一起查词典或是他再去问老师。
他喜欢扮演老师,从1999年11月开始买杂志,开始听《大家说英语》,听不懂英文就先学着哼配乐,学老师的声调。
因为是教学的广播,所以念得很慢,喜怒哀乐的声调也很夸张,他虽然听不懂,也可以感受一些剧情。
几个月以后,2000年1月在公共电视里直接有《大家说英语》的节目演出。
那时候Donald 认识书名上两个单词就买了杂志,学一点配乐和听出一两个单词就在听广播,这回我只是告诉他杂志上登载的节目会演出,他就很兴奋要看剧中人物的真面目。
Hazel、Billy、Thomas三位老师围坐在一张方形矮桌前面和观众打招呼,演三段会话。
电视教学节目一向就很多,Mary觉得既然要看就要主动有兴趣。
为了保持我们想学的心和热度,Mary的做法是让家里的电视机改成了交互式电视。
Mary不是等人家研发什么新设备,而是带着Donald坐在电视前面和老师打招呼,teacher一说:“Hi,everyone!I’m……”我们在电视前也和他挥挥手说:“Hi,Hazel. Hi,Billy.”把电视里的人当朋友,这样就能和整个节目融合在一起,当我们接受它带来的信息,就好像是朋友在和我们聊天一样自然。
在公园的亭子或是在朋友家,每天Donald都找一张小桌子来演杂志老师的对话,自从看了电视,可以学的东西更多了,Hazel老师的嘴形、手势,Donald都跟着做,多听几次他学会了开场白和“now,look today’s key words”,Donald在说开场白和教生词的这两句话后面,都要Mary配乐,配得不对也不行要重来。
后来他会自己编几个生词去当key words,有一个词组单元叫做Useful Phrase,屏幕会出现一支笔画出Useful Phrase ,Donald就会拿起笔来假装画草写。
跟着电视学表情和声调动作之后,Donald不甘寂寞,要当主讲的Hazel ,Mary就被指派当Billy.在小桌旁边演杂志,一边演一边念有个好处,可以整句整句讲,因为带有动作,可以加深印象。
简单地演一两句或是一些固定单元的用语,他会当老师演结束用语,要学老师轮流叫大家“Let’s talk in English on PTS or on the radio”(大家收看和收听节目)。
Eric因为不太和我们玩这些“小把戏”,也不好意思开口说英文,所以他是“美语生活家园”里被动的角色和道具。
Donald叫不动Eric,就叫他当Thomas.教学节目里都有说中文的老师问外籍老师一些问题,后者来解释。
Donald才4岁,信以为真,认为Thomas不会讲英文,所以让在旁边看报的爸爸当Thomas.可怜的Thomas老师被误会了一年,最近终于洗清冤屈了;有一个新单元Grammar Cop(文法警察),有人念错句子,Thomas吹哨子跑出来纠正他。

”Donald又不能一个词一个词地翻译,他会告诉你:“我可以说出它的意思。

这一点也不奇怪,我以前做学生背单词写翻译题目,却不会变化或是不能听到就马上明白,非要偷偷转换中文意思不可,这是因为紧张或是不能融入。
现在看Donald不管他有10个还是1000个单词能力的阶段,都是用情境来掌握意思和表达自己,所以没有因为单词少而不能用英文的问题。
他从ABC字母就同时经过听说读写演的流程。
和Donald一起听一起看,到一起扮演戏中的角色,在说英文的时候不要只想着自己的“我该怎么说”,让Mary丢掉包袱,用小孩子最单纯的方法,照着当时的心情,就会讲得很自然。
这一年经常碰到有人说:“我也听你的话看节目,可是看不懂,又放弃了。
”悄悄告诉你,Donald和Mary就是多了勇气去扮演,又没有要整篇都听得懂才能看。
Donald就是从仿真配乐、打招呼、再会和开场白开始的。
这些都是每天会重复的东西,加上我们自己的表演,学老师在电视上皱着眉头、假装拿放大镜的姿势找生词……Donald后来常说:“Let’s find out.”我也忘了为什么,直到最近他回答别人怎么看英语节目,他说:“当然本来是看不懂,常用的先知道,以前每天半小时里,有三个部分会说到Let’s find out,我看久了就会用find out 来表示查东西、找答案。

现在他看《空中英语》,因为才开始收看几个月,还没有急着买杂志,是用吸收的方式,所以没有演,可是我仍旧会和他比赛打招呼,赶在片头和老师说哈啰,连他们的标志——一只猫头鹰,我们每天也和它说话。
