Digging

Digging
Seamus Heaney
Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; as snug as a gun.
Under my window a clean rasping sound
When the spade sinks into gravelly ground:
My father, digging. I look down
Till his straining rump among the flowerbeds
Bends low, comes up twenty years away
Stooping in rhythm through potato drills
Where he was digging.
The coarse boot nestled on the lug, the shaft
Against the inside knee was levered firmly.
He rooted out tall tops, buried the bright edge deep To scatter new potatoes that we picked
Loving their cool hardness in our hands.
By God, the old man could handle a spade,
Just like his old man.
My grandfather could cut more turf in a day
Than any other man on Toner's bog.
Once I carried him milk in a bottle
Corked sloppily with paper. He straightened up
To drink it, then fell to right away
Nicking and slicing neatly, heaving sods
Over his shoulder, digging down and down
For the good turf. Digging.
The cold smell of potato mold, the squelch and slap Of soggy peat, the curt cuts of an edge
Through living roots awaken in my head.
But I've no spade to follow men like them.
Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests.
I'll dig with it.

There is no better school than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve my performance next time. Never again will I contribute to my downfall by refusing to face the truth and learn from my past mistakes. Because I know: gems cannot shine without polish, and I can not perfect myself without hardship. Now I know that there are no times in life when opportunity, the chance to be and do gathers so richly about my soul when it has to suffer cruel adversity. Then everything depends on whether I raise my head or lower it in seeking help. Whenever I am struck down, in the future, by any terrible defeat, I will inquire of myself, after the first pain has passed, how I can turn that adversity into good. What a great opportunity that moment may present……to take the bitter root I am holding and transform it into fragrant garden of flowers.Always will I seek the seed of triumph in every adversity.

Once a man planned to build a terrace. He worked very hard and spent a lot of time digging and carrying earth. When the mound was almost completed and only one more basket of earth was needed, the man gave up.The terrace was never completed. This idiom means to fail to succeed for lack of final effort.

A Woodman came into a forest to ask the Trees to give him a handle for Ax. It seemed so modest a request that the principal tree at once agreed to it, and it was settled among them that the plain, homely Ash should furnish what was wanted. No sooner had the Woodman fitted the staff to his purpose, than he began laying about him on all side. Felling the whole matter too late, whispered to the Cedar: "The first concession has lost all. If we has not a sacrificed our humble neighbor, we might have yetstood for ages ourselves."

Lesson 6 Mark Twain ---Mirror of America马克. Most Americans remember Mark Twain as the father of Huck Finn's idyllic cruise through eternal boyhood and Tom Sawyer's endless summer of freedom and adventure. In-deed,this nation's best-loved author was every bit as ad-venturous,patriotic,romantic, and humorous as anyone has ever imagined.I found another Twain as well–one who grew cynical, bitter, saddened by the profound personal tragedies life dealt him,a man who became obsessed with the frailties of the human race, who saw clearly ahead a black wall of night.

Tramp printer, river pilot,Confederate guerrilla,prospector,starry-eyed optimist, acid-tongued cynic:The man who became Mark Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens and he ranged across the nation for more than a third of his life, digesting the new American experience before sharing it with the world as writer and lecturer. He adopted his pen name from the cry heard in his steamboat days, signaling two fathoms (12feet)of water--a navigable depth. His popularity is attested by the fact that more than a score of his books remain in print, and translations are still read around the world.

The Story of the Elves Digging for Gold in Model English. In the enchanted realm of Model English, a far-off land filled with wonders and magic, there lived a community of elves. These elves were not just any elves; they were renowned for their wisdom, skill, and hard work. Their home was a lush forest, where the trees were taller than the tallest buildings and the flowers bloomed with colors more vibrant than any rainbow. One day, a rumor spread through the elf village that a hidden mine of pure gold lay somewhere deep within the forest. This gold was said to be so pure that it glowed in the dark, and whoever possessed it would have more wealth than they could imagine. The elves, who were accustomed to peaceful lives filled with harmony and creativity, were suddenly consumed by the desire to find this gold. The elf leader, a wise old elf named Mithrandir, called a meeting of all the elves. He knew that this quest forgold could potentially divide their community and destroy their way of life. Mithrandir stood before his fellow elves, his eyes filled with wisdom and concern."Dear elves," he began, "we have always lived our lives in peace, content with what nature has provided us. This rumor of gold may be a test of our unity and resolve. If we give in to the temptation of wealth, we may lose what truly matters our peace, our harmony, and our sense of purpose."
