Students Who Volunteer Mario Green and Mary Brown from Riverside High School give up several hours each week to help others. Mario loves animals and wants to be an animal doctor. He volunteers at an animal hospital every Saturday morning. Mario believes it can help him to get his future dream job. “It’s hard work,” he says, “but I want to learn more about how to care for animals. I get such a strong feeling of satisfaction when I see the animals get better and the look of joy on their owners’ faces.”

Warming up by learning about should and could
Hi, everyone!
We all have problems. So we need to give and take advice. But how to give and take advice?
Well, we can use should and could.
1a Looking and writing
Everyone has his problems. So do you, and so do I. Now turn to page 10 to read the five statements of problems and put them into the right box.
1b Listening and circling
You will go on to listen and circle the problems you hear in activity 1a. Now you will read the tapescript to underline all the useful expressions.
1c Doing pairwork
You will look at the problems in 1a and make conversations in pairs.
Maybe you could go and ask him to turn it down a little.
2a Listening and circling
Peter’s friend is giving him advice. Circle the word “could” or “should” you hear.
Now you will read the tapescript to underline all the useful expressions.
2b Listening and drawing
Listen again. Why doesn’t Peter like his friend’s advice? Draw lines to match the advice with the reasons.

Next you will role play the conversation between Peter and his friend.
