旅游资料英译应做到文字自然流畅、表达清晰易懂、文体简洁直观、有感染力;并在把握基本原则上探讨了旅游资料的翻译技巧,即采取多种翻译方法的有机结合,对译文进行适当调整的方法,才能取得更好的效果。
一、旅游资料的功能及英译标准谈论旅游资料的翻译必须把旅游资料的功能与翻译有机结合。
旅游资料有不同的种类,但目的都是为了吸引游客。
其主要功能在于信息功能、美感功能和诱导功能。
旅游资料首先必须提供足够的信息,通过对风景名胜的介绍、宣传,激发人们旅游、参观的兴趣,增加游客对中国历史文化的了解。
为了增强吸引力,旅游资料必须能给读者带来美的感受,使之产生一睹为快的欲望。
具备了信息功能和美感功能,也就具备了诱导功能。
因此,旅游资料的翻译要通过传达原文的信息,全面反映原文的功能,才能达到原文的交际目的。
旅游资料的翻译不能等同于单纯的中译英文字翻译,旅游资料翻译的成功与否,首先取决于效果。
美国当代著名翻译理论家尤金.奈达指出:“所谓翻译,是指从语义到语体用最切近而又最自然的对等语再现原文的信息。
”这里的“对等”指的是译文对目的语读者所产生的效果大致相等。
译文读者与原文读者具有不同的文化背景,如果一字不动地译成另一种语言就不一定能达到原来的效果。
奈达在他的“对等反应”理论中认为,翻译的重点不应当是语言的表现形式,而应当是读者对译文的反应,还应把这种反应和原作读者对原文所产生的反应作对比。
译文应该具有原文同等的表现力和吸引力。
如果译文不为读者所接受,效果不佳或甚至适得其反,那就等于失去了翻译的意义。
要想让译文在译文读者心目中引起的反应效果与原文读者的反应效果相似,译者必须把重点放在译文的译文读者上,充分考虑到译文的可读性和读者接受能力,从读者的实际情况出发,采取适当措施,在不影响原文意思表达的前提下,对译文读者可能不易理解的信息作适当的调整和变通,才能使读者理解并接受信息,达到旅游资料翻译的最终目的。
不同民族思维方式和文化传统上的差异赋予了各个民族语言不同的文化内涵,并制约着各自使用语言的独特方式。
翻译是一种文化交流活动。
翻译是不仅要注意语言文字的表面形式,更应注意语言的文化因素,充分考虑不同民族所固有的文化背景、心理因素和欣赏习惯。
旅游资料的翻译更是这样。
旅游资料含有丰富的文化内涵和民族特色,涉及大量的文化信息。
因此,把握好旅游资料中的文化因素,是旅游资料翻译的关键。
只求语言形式上的对等而忽视汉英在文化深层次上的差异,是无法实现旅游资料的功能的。
二、当前旅游资料英译所在的问题旅游资料翻译作为一种对外工作,需要译者具有高度的责任感和严谨的态度。
旅游资料涉及面广,包含历史文化、风土人情、民俗习惯等诸多方面的知识,旅游资料的翻译不仅需要译者具有扎实的双语基本功和娴熟的翻译技巧,还需要有广博的文化知识。
综观当前旅游资料汉译英翻译现状,可以发现旅游资料英译的欠缺较多,常见的旅游资料英译过程中出现问题有以下几方面:一是译文语言欠考虑,汉化英语严重;二是译文过分忠于原文的字句,不分对象,不顾及中外读者的差别,逐字照翻对,对于外国游客不熟悉的汉语文化背景知识缺乏必要的处理,令外国游客难以理解;三是译文多以汉语的思维方式行事,不符合外国游客的审美方式和欣赏习惯;四是译文枯燥乏味,缺乏感染力,难以引起外国游客的兴趣。
三、英汉旅游介绍的差异1.在汉语表达中,一般习惯地将重要的信息放在最后,而在有达中,则习惯于将重要的信息放在最前,这与两种不同的文化背景有关。
中国人说话、写文章有时喜欢“卖关子”,将重要的信息最后传达,所以在听人说话或阅读文章时,我们中国人一般特别关注最后出现的信息;而英美人一般会将功赎罪他们的目的或意图首先说出,然后再作具体阐述说明,因此才有“the last but not the least”之说。
在有些旅游景点资料汉译英的过程中,为符合欧美人的表述习惯,可将次序调整,起到开门见山,突出重点的作用。
例如:在四川阿坝藏族自治州的南坪、松潘等县的交界处,有一片纵深30余公里的风景区,那就是举世闻名的大熊猫的故乡——九寨沟自然保护区。
可翻译成:Jiuzaigou, a 30-old-kilometre-long scenic gully, lies on the border between Namping and Songpan counties in the Aba Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province. It is the natural range of the world-known great panda, as well as a nature reserve designated by the state.2.汉语和英语源自两种完全不同的文化背景,而且由于中国人和欧美人生活的社会结构、历史条件、地理环境等方面的差异,形成了两种不同的思维方式和审美观点。
思维和语言之间存在着一定的对应关系,思维的方式决定着语言的表达形式、东西方不同的思维方式必然影响着汉语和英语的不同表达形式。
汉语表达委婉含蓄,意境悠远;英语表达思维慎密,结构严谨。
汉语为了加强文章的力度,往往不惜使用大量的修饰词汇和动词密集句子,这与英语的习惯和风格相去甚无字。
英语最忌讳言过其实,任何规程和重复都是语言表达之大敌、加上英语句子是以主谓结构为主干,不分主次一味将动词堆积就会破坏英语的表达,与欧美民族的审美方式和欣赏习惯背道而施。
例如:西湖犹如明镜,千峰凝翠,洞壑幽深,风光奇丽。
若要将其翻译成英语,结构没有规律,缺乏逻辑,而英语最忌“流散和疏放”,遣词讲究逻辑性,造句崇尚组织性。
首先,不宜同时并列使用几个主语,须辨其主次,确立主这句话的主语是WestLake;其次,再分析千峰、洞壑、风光与西湖的关系,寻找它们的联系词;最后还应老柴名词的单复数形式等问题。
可以将其翻译成:“The West Lake is like a mirror embellished all around with green hills and deep caves of enchanting beauty.”虽然“千峰”“凝翠”的诗情画意消失了,“洞壑”“幽深”的语境不见了,但译文更符合英美人的语言习惯,较好地传达了语言信息。
再如:姑苏城外,湖泊河流,星罗棋布,河苍纵横,各具特色的桥梁鳞次栉比,举目入画。
建筑傍水而立,幽静雅逸,形成了水乡城市的独特风貌。
在汉语表达中,为了起到言简意赅,生动形象的效果,我们用“四字格”来描述语言。
以上一段短短的旅游介绍文字涉及到的就有“湖泊河流,星罗棋布,河苍纵横,鳞次栉比,举目入画,傍水而立,幽静雅逸。
”在直译表达不符合欧美人习惯的情况下,我们应该采用简洁的意译翻译,将原有文字打碎后理解重组。
参考译文如下:Outside Suzhou Rivers lakes and artificial waterways spread all over the place. The canals are spanned with small bridges with distinct features. If you look round, you will enjoy the view of picturesque beauty. The quiet elegant waterside buildings have assumed the unique feature of a water city.著名翻译学家奈达曾经说过:“Translation is translating meaning”旅游景点汉语英译有别于文学翻译,它只是一种介绍性的读物,目的是让国外游客能够理解。
在翻译时只有善于抓住主旨,去繁就简,才能译出符合英语表达方式的文章。
3、句式结构。
在中国旅游景点资料英译的过程中,也应特别注重句式结构。
汉语句子信息的传达主要通过语言环境昨语言内在相互关系来表现,“以意统形”。
句中任何相关结合部分只要搭配合理就能够组成句子,因而句子反映的是整体思维的多维性特征,带有很大的模糊性。
英语则有形态变化,句界分明,全句以动词为核心,主谓结构为主干控制语法关系,形成空间组合,句子结构层次分明,表现为一种严密的逻辑性思维。
例如:“人间仙境”桃花源,位于湖南省常德市西南40公里处,南倚武陵,中贯国道,北临沅水,要居湖南省诸风景名胜区之枢纽,系湖南省十大风景名胜区之一。
在当地的旅游景点资料中是这样翻译的:The land of Peach Blossom which is situated abut 40 km to the southeast of Change City, Hunan Province has the Wuling Mountains towering over at its south and Yuan River flowing by at its north. The thorough fare runs through the land. It is a pivot of the scenic spots and the one of the famous ten regions of scenery in Hunan Province.这段英语文字,主干部分明显偏离汉语的重心,与其它部分关系不清,构句行文纯属汉语思维方式,因而导致结构散乱,还有一些用词和语法错误。
按照句子层次结构,主干应该是汉语文字的划线部分,其余只是辅助成份,可用分词短语和介词结构来表示,显得主次分明。
修改后的译文为:Taohuayuan ( the land of Peach Blossoms ), located about 40 kilometers to the southwest of Changde City, is among the ten well-known scenic spots in Hunan Province. It is a thoroughfare to the other places with Mount Wulig on the south, the Yuan River on the north, and the national roads through its area.4、信息添加。
在汉语旅游资料中常常会涉及到一些具有中国特色的人名、地名、朝代以及度量衡,对于“老外”来讲,许多人对中国的情况知道甚少,或者根本不了解,在翻译时,我们应该以“服务为本”,注意适当添加辅助信息,将这些知识补充出来。
例如:颐和园历史悠久,早在金朝时便是完颜亮的行宫。
