strategy..joxue.JoxueC long term borrowing.D warning memo...joxue.JoxueQuestions 35 to 38 are based on the following passage: ..joxue.JoxueIf sustainable petitive advantage depends on workforce skills,American firms have a problem.Human resource management is not traditionally seen as central to the petitive survival of the firm in the United States.Skill acquisition is considered as an individualbor is simply another factor of production to be hired-rented at the lowest possible cost-much as one buys raw materials or equipment...joxue.JoxueThe lack of importance attached to human resource management can be seen in the corporation hierarchy. In an American firm the chief financial officer is almost always second in mand. The post of head of human resource managements is usually a specialized job,off at the edge of the corporate hierarchy. The executive who holds it is neverconsulted on major strategic decisions and has no chance to move up to Chief Executive Officer(CEO).By way of contrast,in Japan the head of human resource managementis central-usually the second most importantexecutive, after the CEO,in the firm s hierarchy...joxue.JoxueWhile American firms often talk about the vast amounts spent on training their work forces,in fact they invest less in the skill of their employees than do the Japanese or German firms. The money they do invest is also morehighly concentrated on professional and managerial employees. And the limited investments that are made in training workers are also much more narrowly focused on the specific skills necessary to do the next job rather than on the basic background skills that make it possible to absorb new technologies...joxue.JoxueAs a result, problems emerge when new breakthrough technologies arrive. If American workers, for example, take much longer to learn how to operate new flexible manufacturing stations than workers in Germany(as theydo),the effective cost of those stations is lower in Germany than it is in the United Stated.More time is required before equipment is up and running at capacity, and the need for extensive retraining generates costs and creates bottlenecks that limit the speed with which new equipment can be employed. The result is a slower pace of technological change. And in the end the skills of the bottom half of the population affect the wages of the top half.If the bottom half can t effectively staff the processes that have to be operated, the management and professional jobs that go with these processes will disappear...joxue.Joxue35.Which of the following applies to the management of human resources in American panies?..joxue.JoxueA.They hire people at the lowest cost regardless of their skills...joxue.JoxueB.They see the gaining of skills as their employees own management...joxue.JoxueB.Extensive retraining is indispensable toeffective human resource man agement...joxue.JoxueC.The head of human resource management must bein the central position in a firm s hierarchy....joxue.JoxueD.The human resource management strategies of American firms affect their petitive capacity.....joxue.JoxueQuestions 39 to 42 are based on the following passage: ..joxue.JoxueInter is a vast work of puters that connects many of the world s businesses, institutions, and individuals. The inter, which means interconnected work of works, links tens of thousands of smaller puter works. These works transmit huge amounts of information in the form of words, images, and sounds. ..joxue.JoxueThe Inter was information on virtually everywork users can search through sources ranging from vast databases to small electronic"bulletin boards ,"where users form discussion groups around mon interests.Much of the Inter s traffic consists of messages sent from one puter user to another. These messages are called electronic mail or e mail.Inter users have electronic addresses that allow them to send and receive e mail.Other uses of thework include obtaining news, joining electronic debates, and playing electronic games. One feature of the Inter, known as the World Wide Web,provides graphics, audio, and video to enhance the information in its documents. These documents cover a vast number of topics...joxue.JoxuePeople usually aess the Inter with a device called a modem.Modems connect puters to the work through telephone lines.Much of the Inter operates through worldwide telephone works of fiber optic cables. These cables contain hair thin strands of glass that carry data as pulses of light. They can transmit thousands of times more data than local phone lines, most of which consist of copper wires...joxue.JoxueThe history of the Inter began in the 1960s.At that time, the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA)of the United States Department of Defense developed a work of puters called ARPA.Originally,ARPA connected only military a nd government puter systems. Its purpose was to make these systems secure in the event of a disaster or was.Soon after the creation of ARPA,universities and other institutionsdeveloped their own puter works. These works eventually were merged with ARPA to form the Inter.By the 1990s,anyone with a puter, modem, and Inter software could link up to the Inter...joxue.JoxueIn the future, the Inter will probably grow more sophisticated as puter technology bees more powerful. Many experts believe the Inter may bee part of a larger work called the information superhighway. This work, still under development, would link puters with telephone panies, cable television stations, and other munication systems.People could bank, shop, watch TV,and perform many other activities through the work...joxue.Joxue39.This passage is about the------of the Inter...joxue.JoxueA future.B general introduction..joxue.JoxueC use.D indispensable superhighway...joxue.JoxueC.the Inter will be applied more...joxue.JoxueD.the Inter will bine cable stations...joxue.JoxueQuestions 43 to 46 are based on the following passage: ..joxue.JoxueSex prejudices are based on and justified by the ideology that biology is destiny.Aording to thisideology, basic biological and psychological differences exist between the sexes. These differences require each sex to play a separate role in social life.Women are the weakersexboth physically and emotionally. Thus, they are naturally suited, much more so than men,to the performance of domestic duties .A woman s place, under normal circumstances,is within the protective environment of the home.Nature has determined that women play caretaker roles, such as wife and mother and homemaker. On the other hand, men are best suited to go outsintosthe petitive world of work andpolitics, where serious responsibilities must be takenon.Men are to be the providers;women and children are"dependents."..joxue.JoxueThe ideology also holds that women who wish to work outside the household should naturally fill these jobs that are in line with the special capabilities of their sex.It is thus appropriate for women, not men,to be employed as nurses, social workers, elementary school teachers, household helpers, and clerks and secretaries. ..joxue.JoxueThese positions are simply an extension of women s domestic rmal distinctions between"women s work"and"men s work"in the labor force, aording to theideology, are simply a functional reflection of the basic differences between the sexes...joxue.JoxueFinally,the ideology suggests that nature has worked her will in another significant way.For the human speciesto survive over time, its members must regularlyreproduce. Thus, women must, whether at home or in the labor force, make the most of their physical appearance...joxue.JoxueSo goes the ideology. It is,of course, not true that basic biological and psychological differences between the sexes require each to play sex defined roles in social life. There is ample evidence that sex roles vary from society to society, and those role differences that to exist are largely learned...joxue.JoxueBut to the degree people actually believe that biology is destiny and that nature intended for men and women to make different contributions to society, sex defined roles will be seen as totally aeptable...joxue.Joxue43.Women s place, some people think,is within the protective environment of the home because------...joxue.JoxueA.women can provide better care for the children...joxue.JoxueB.women are too weak to do any agricultural work at all...joxue.JoxueC.women are biologically suited to domestic jobs...joxue.JoxueD.women can not pete with men in any field...joxue.Joxue44.Aording to the author, sex roles------...joxue.JoxueA are socially determined..joxue.JoxueB.are emotionally and physicallydetermined...joxue.JoxueC.can only be determined by what education people take...joxue.JoxueD.are biologically and psychologically determined...joxue.Joxue45.The author points out that the assignments of women s roles in work------...joxue.JoxueA.are work are too limited at present....joxue.JoxueC.In one society, men might perform what is considered women s duties by another...joxue.JoxueD.Some of the women s roles in domestic duties can not be taken over by men...joxue.JoxueQuestions 47 to 50 are based on the following passage: ..joxue.JoxueIn a sense, the new protectionism is not protectionism at all,at least not in the traditional sense of theterm. The old protectionism referred only to traderestricting and trade expanding devices, such as thetariff or export subsidy. The new protectionism is much broader than this;it includes interventionssintosforeigntrade but is not limited to them. The new protectionism,in fact, refers to how the whole of government interventionsintosthe private economy affects international trade. The emphasis on trade is still there, thus came the term"protection."But what is new is the realization that virtually all government activities can affectinternational economic relations...joxue.JoxueThe emergence of the new protectionism in the Western world reflects the victory of the interventionist,or welfare economy over the market economy.Jab Tumiler writes,"The old protectionism…coexisted, without any apparent in ___ectual difficulty with the aeptance of the market as a national as well as an international economic distribution mechanism-indeed,protectionists as well as (if not more than)free traders stood for laissez faire(放任政策).Now,as in the 1930s,protectionism is an expression of a profound skepticism as to the ability of the market to distribute resources and ines to societies satisfaction." ..joxue.JoxueIt is precisely this profound skepticism of the market economy that is responsible for the protectionism. In a market economy, economic change of various colors implies redistribution of resources and ines. The same opinion in many munities apparently is that such redistributions often are not proper. There fore, the government intervenes(干涉;干预)to bring about a more desired result...joxue.JoxueThe victory of the welfare state is almost plete in northern Europe. In Sweden ,Norway,Finland,Denmark, and the Netherlands, government intervention in almost all aspects of economic and social life is considered normal. In Great Britain this is only somewhat less true. ___ traditionally has played a very active role in economic life in France and continued to do so.Only West Germany dares to go against the tide towards excessive interventionism in Western Europe. It also happens to be the most suessful Western European economy...joxue.JoxueThe welfare state has made significant progress in the United States as well as in Western Europe.Socialsecurity, unemployment insurance, minimum wage laws, andrent control are by now traditional welfare state elements on the American scene. ..joxue.Joxue47.This passage is primarily concerned with discussing------...joxue.JoxueA.the definition of the new protectionism...joxue.JoxueB.the difference between new and old protectionism. ..joxue.JoxueC.the emergence of the new protectionism in the Western world...joxue.JoxueD.the significance of the welfare state...joxue.Joxue48.Which of the MBA英语考试历年翻译真题2007Powering the great ongoing changes of our time is the rise of human creativity as the defining feature of economic life. Creativity has come to be valued, because new technologies, new industries and new wealth flow from it. Andas a result, our lives and society have begun to echo with creative ideas. It is our commitment to creativity in its varied dimensions that forms the underlying spiritof our age.Creativity is essential to the way we live and work today, and in many sensesalways has been. The big advances in standard of living –-not to mention the bigbetter competitive advantages in the marketplace--always have come from‖ not strictly true. OneOne might argue that‘srecipes, not just more cooking.‖ might point out, for instance, that during the long period from the early days onthe Industrial Revolution to modern times, much of the growth in productivity andmaterial wealth in the industrial nations came not just from creative inventionslike the steam engine, but from the wid espread application of ―cooking i nlike massive division of labor, concentration of assets, quantity‖ business methodsvertical integration and economies of scale. But those methods themselves werecreative developments.2008The term ”business model”first came into widespread use with the invention of personal computer and the spreadsheet(空白表格程序).Before the spreadsheet, business planning usually meant producing a single forecast. At best, you did a little sensitivity analysis around the projection. The spreadsheet ushered in a much more analytic approach to planning because every major lineitem could be pulled apart, its components and subcomponents analyzed and tested. You could ask what- if questions about the critical assumptions on which.your business depended-for example, what if customers are more price-sensitivethan we thought?-and with a few keystrokes, you could see how any change wouldplay out on every aspect of the whole. In other words, you could model the behavior of a business. Before the computer changed the nature of business planning, most successful business models were created more by accident than by elaborate design. By enabling companies to tie their marketplace insights muchmore tightly to the resulting economics, spread sheet made it possible to modelbusiness before they were launched.2009With the nation’s financial system teetering on a cliff. The compensation arrangements for executives of the big banks and other financial firms are coming under close examination again.Bankers’excessive risk- taking is a significant cause of this financial crisisand has continued, to others in the past, in this case, it was fueled by low interestrates and kept going by a false sense of security created by a debt-fueled bubblein the economy.Mortgage lenders gladly lent enormous sums to those who could not afford topay them back dividing the laws and selling them off to the next financialinstitution along the chain, advantage of the same high-tech securitization to loadon more risky mortgage-based assets.Financial regulation will have to catch up with the most irresponsiblepractices that led banks down in this road, in hopes averting the next crisis, whichis likely to involve different financial techniques and different sorts of assets. But it is worth examining the root problem of compensation schemes that are tiedand thus encourage bankers to taketo short-term profits and revenue‘s,irresponsible risks.2010In this section there is a text in English .Translate it into Chinese. Write yourtranslation on ANSWER SHEET2“Sustainability”has become a popular word these days, but to Ted Ning, the concept will always have personal meaning. Having endured a painful period ofunsustainability in his own life made it clear to him that sustainability-orientedvalues must be expressed though everyday action and choice.Ning recalls spending a confusing year in the late 1990s selling insurance. He’d been though the dot-com boom and burst and, desperate for a job, signedon with a Boulder agency. It didn’t go well. “It was a really had move because that’s not mypassion,”says Ning, whose dilemma about the job translated, predictably, into alack of sales. “I was miserable, I had so much anxiety that I would wake up in themiddle of the night and stare at the ceiling. I had no money and needed the job.Ever yone said, ?Just wait, you‘ll tur n the corner, give it some time.‘‖2011Who would have thought that, globally, the IT industry produces about thesame volume of greenhouse gases as the worl d‘s airlines do --- roughly 2 percentof all CO2 emissions? Many everyday tasks take a surprising toll on theenvironment. A Google search can leak between 0.2 and 7.0 grams of CO2,depending on how many attempts are needed to get the ―right‖ answe results to its users quickly, then, Google has to maintain vast data centres aroundthe world, packed with powerful computers. While producing large quantities ofCO2, these computers emit a great deal of heat, so the centres need to be wellair-conditioned, which uses even more energy. However, Google and other big techproviders monitor their efficiency closely and make improvements. Monitoring isthe first step on the road to reduction, but there is much more to be done, andnot just by big companies.2012When people in developing countries worry about migration, they are usuallyconcerned at the prospect of ther best and brightest departure to Silicon Valleyor to hospitals and universities in the developed world ,These are the kind ofworkers that countries like Britian ,Canada and Australia try to attract by usingimmigration rules that privilege college graduates 。

Translate the passage into Chinese and write your translation on ANSWER SHEET 2.The types of daydreams, whether they are pleasant and hopeful or filled with despair take shape in childhood when everyone develops one of three basic daydreaming styles: positive, negative and scattered, American Health reports. Although everyone lapses occasionally into each of these types, positive daydreamers are more likely to imagine happy, playful or entertaining scenarios. (2)Negative daydreamers tend to dwell on life’s darker side imagining dangerous and/or life threatening situations, such as the appearance of a fatal or weakening disease or becoming a victim of violence. Scattered daydreamers are easily bored and distracted. “Their mental images tend to be fleeting, repetitive and shallow, like variations on the same fairy tales,”explains Yale psychologist Ron Tower. (3)While all three types are common, positive imaginations are likeliest to serve as springboards (跳板) for problem solving, while negative and scattered daydreams may leave a person feeling anxious. Negative daydreamers are waiting for the other shoe “to fall.” Their imaginations are often guilt-ridden or obsessive. There are times when drifting away can cause problems, according to Bolin. “If daydreaming gets in the way of daily function because the person is doing it all day, the person won’t be very productive,”she says. “The amount of time and the frequency that a person daydreams is what’s important. It should not take up all of your time. (4)If people find their daydreaming is becoming excessive (过多的) , they should take a realistic look at what’s going on in their life and ask themselves what the are trying to avoid. Then they can assess what steps they need to take to correct the situation.”(Anyone who has a hard time discriminating between reality and imagination or starts replacing real life family and friends with imagined people should seek professional help.) (5)Professor Singer sums up the advantages of daydreams to the average person: “by sitting quietly and letting your daydreams emerge instead of squelching (抑制) them, you may find there are parts of yourself you haven’t been listening to. Instead of fearing them, you’ll gain access to tremendous range of interesting, creative ideas.”1.

Section V Translation (10 points)
Directions: In this section there is a passage in English. Translate the five sentences underlined into Chinese and write your translation on the ANSWER SHEET2.
March 27, 1997, dawned as a normal day at the Collins’ home. By the middle of the morning, Jack Collins was at his desk, writing checks, paying bills the way he always had: on time. Then the phone rang, and the nightmare began.
(71) An investigator for a bank was on the line, asking in a severe voice why Collins, a university physicist, was late on payments for a $27,000 car, bought in Virginia the previous year. “I don’t have a car like this,” Collins protested. The last time he had set foot in Vir~nia was as an officer at a submarine base, three decades ago. But his name was on the
contract, and so was his Social Security Number.
During the months that ensued, he and his wife learned that someone had bought four more cars and 28 other items -- worth $113,000 in all m in their name. Their hitherto good credit record had been destroyed.
(72) “After a lifetime of being honest,” says Collins, “all of a sudden I was basically being accused of stealing and treated like a criminal.”
This is what it means to fall prey to a nonviolent but frightening and fast-growing crime: identity theft. It happens to at least 500,000 new victims each year, according to government figures.
(73) And it happens very easily because every identification number you have m Social Security, credit ca rds driver’s license, telephone m “is a key that unlocks some storage of money or goods,” says a fraud (欺诈) program manager of the US Postal Service. “So if you throw away your credit card receipt and I get it and use the number on it, I’m not becoming you, but to the credit card company I’ve become your account.”
(74) One major problems experts say, is that the
Social Security Number (SSN) – originally meant only for retirement benefit and tax purposes -- has become the universal way to identify people. It is used as identification by the military, colleges and in billions of commercial transactions.
Yet a shrewd thief can easily snatch your SSN, not only by stealing your wallet, but also by taking mail from your box, going through your trash for discarded receipts and bills or asking for it over the phone on some pretext.
Using your SSN, the thief applies for a credit card in your name, asking that it be sent to a different address than yours, and uses it for multiple purchases.
A couple of months later the credit card company, or its debt collection agency, presses you for payment.
You don’t have to pay the debt, but you must clean up your damaged credit record. (75) Thatmeans getting a means getting a police report and copy of the erroneous contract, and then using them to clear the fraud from your credit reports which is held by a credit bureau. Each step can require a huge amount of effort.

(74) 专家们认为,主要问题在于,原来只用于领取退休养老金和征税的社会保险卡号码现在已经成了确认身份的普遍方式。
