At 2,999m, Jabal Sawda had been considered the kingdom’s highest peak until twin mountaineers, Matthew and Eric Gilbertson, climbed it in 2018, finding it to be about three meters shy of Jabal Ferwa. For more than a decade, the twins have traveled to one country after another around the world, rewriting the mountain record books about places across the Middle East and West Africa. So far they have reached the peaks of more than 100 countries and newly identified the highest points in Togo, Guinea-Bissau and Ivory Coast.Matthew, a research scientist at Lockheed Martin in Palo Alto, California, and Eric, an instructor in mechanical engineering at Seattle University, said their work was motivated by a love for mountaineering. “If we’re going to go through all the effort to visit a country and visit the highest mountain, we want to be sure that we have indeed visited the highest mountain,” Matthew said. “We consider it assistance to future mountaineers to have an accurate survey done so that they can focus their efforts on getting to whichever peak they want to get to.”The twins’ love of mountaineering began when they were children with family trips to the Great Smoky Mountains in the southeastern United States. When they were students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT), they started climbing as many mountains as possible. In 2012, after achieving their goal of reaching the highest point of each US state, they turned their attention to the rest of the world.4. Most people tend to believe life should be fair. Some of the 99% seem to believe life has somehow treated them unfairly, and some of the 1% feel life hasn’t treated them fairly enough. My questions are these: What is fairness? Is life fair? Should life be fair?We clearly have no choice about how we come into this world. We have little choice early in life. But as we grow older, choices abound. I have long believed that while we have no control over the beginning of our life, the majority of us have the ability to influence the outcomes we attain. Fairness is a state of mind, and most often, an unhealthy state of mind. Our state in life cannot, or at least should not, be blamed on our parents, our teachers, or our society—it’s largely based on the choices we make, and the attitudes we adopt.Life is full of examples of the uneducated, the mentally and physically challenged people born into war-torn areas, who could have complained about life being unfair, but who instead chose a different path. Regardless of the challenges they faced, they had the character to choose contribution over complaint.I agree that challenges exist. I agree that many have an uphill battle due to these verity of the challenges they face. What I disagree with is the attempt to use fairness to solve all problems in the world. Rules and orders don’t create fairness, but people’s desire and determination can work ar ound most life challenges. It doesn’t matter whether you are born with a silver spoon, plastic spoon, or no spoon at all. A friend of mine came to this country from Africa in his late teens, barely spoke the language, drove a cab while working his way through college, and is now the president of a technology services firm. Stories such as this are all around us—they are not miracles, nor are they the rare exception. They do, however, demonstrate blindness to the mindset of the fairness.8. What is the primary purpose of the text?A.To promote “efforts over complaint”.B.To stress the importance of fairness.C.To share an inspiring story of a friend.D.To prove that fairness is a state of mind.9. What does the underlined word “abound” in paragraph 2 mean?A.Change fully.B.Remain the same.C.Exist in numbers.D.Disappear completely.10. What opinion may the writer agree with?A.Most of us can affect the results we achieve.B.Our background determines our choices.C.People’s desire and determination create unfairness.D.We should depend on fairness to solve all problems.11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Fairness Is JusticeB.Life Is Not Fair—Deal with ItC.Fairness Comes FirstD.Cry for FairnessThe 2010s brought no shortage of miraculous technologies, from tablet computers to4G mobile internet. But these had surprisingly little effect on the economy. During that decade productivity growth in the developed countries averaged a miserable (少得可怜的) 1% a year, holding down average wages. Innovative firms embraced new tech, but many less adventurous ones did not bother. The experience showed that technological breakthroughs and improvements in average living standards do not always go hand in hand.Generative AI, its developers say, will be different. Not since the invention of the internet has a new technology so captured the public imagination. The technology is consumer-friendly: within days of its release to the public, Chat GPT, the most famous AI chat bot, had millions of users. It is easy to see how this innovation could improve all types of work at all types of firms, from increasing the accuracy of doctors’ diagnoses to helping programmers write software code more efficiently. With that said, for AI to truly spread out in the economy, it needs to make its mark beyond the most innovative companies. And this will take time. Although the internet began to be used by some companies in the early 1990s, it was not until the late 2000s that two-thirds of American businesses had a website. About 70 world’s largest firms still show no interest in AI, according to our analysis. Some evidence even suggests that usage of Chat GPT and its competitors is falling — perhaps as people have tried it out, and then decided it is not for them.Indeed, even the most powerful technologies take time to be adopted, because companies tend to use a mix of software and services, some of which may be years or even decades old. Replacing outdated systems can be costly and complicated. Moreover, in the many industries either run or heavily regulated by the government, such as healthcare, education and construction, bosses and trade unions often resist the application of new technology, worried that it will lead to job losses. In time AI could well transform how people live their lives and do their jobs. But the road to widespread usage, and any resulting productivity boom, will be a long one.12. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?A.How productivity affects average wages.B.Why the 2010s is a productive decade.C.Whether economic growth follows new technologies.D.What innovative companies care for.13. What does the author want to indicate by mentioning Chat GPT in paragraph 2?A.AI’s public imagination.B.Consumers’ enthusiasm.C.AI’s healthy p rofits. D.AI’s huge potential.14. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?A.Big firms are less motivated to adopt new tech.B.More efforts are needed to advocate AI.C.Chat GPT is falling behind its competitors.D.Websites were uncommon in the early 2000s.15. Which word best describes the author’s attitude towards the future of AI?A.Hopeful. B.Worried. C.Cautious. D.Pessimistic. Perseverance isn’t easy. But before you blame your lack of willpower, consider this: Building mental strength is similar to building physical strength. In just a few minutes each day, you can train your brain to think differently, manage your emotions, and behave productively. 1617 Think about three things you are grateful for in your life. It could be as simple as the clean water that you drink. Write in a gratitude journal, list the things you feel grateful for over dinner, or make it a habit to find what you’re thankful for before you go to bed. Over time, being grateful becomes a second nature. It’s impossible to stay strong when you’re thinking about something that happened last week or horrible things going to happen tomorrow. 18 It’s therefore of great significance to be able to concentrate on the present. With regular practice, you’ll increase the ability to focus. It can be tempting to wait until you feel ready to make a change. But waiting until you feel good about yourself before you take action could backfire. Instead, when you change your behavior, your thoughts and your emotions will follow. So when you’re sad, put your shoulders back and smile, and you’ll feel better. 19Every day is a chance to develop some mental strength. Simple, short exercises performed over time will help you build mental strength. 20 Feeling sorry for yourself and giving up after your first failure are just a few of the bad habits that could discourage you from building your mental strength.Back in the days when I was just a young student, I was always absent from school ______, too shy to step into the public attention.

1.consider, suggest, advise, admit, delay, practise, deny, finish, enjoy, appreciate, forbid, imagine, risk, mind, allow, permit, escape等。

It’s entirely up to you to let your children know that, while they may be blessed with a loving home, a warm bed, plenty to eat, many people are not.My oldest son, Sam, is six now and a lovely boy, thoughtful and concerned about the world, kind to his brothers and in love with nature, insects and animals. I get nervous at the fact that it is my responsibility to make him aware of the dark side of life — war, starvation, environmental disasters — part of me wants to preserve his innocence, but most of me thinks he needs to know and I should be the one to tell him. We’ve talked a little bit, about climate change, but I find it hard to be really honest with him. I sat down with him recently, to read something that Green Books sent to me, called How to Turn Your Parents Green. I thought a light-hearted book might be an easy way to talk to him about what he’s going to have to deal with.I asked him if he knew about climate change and he said no and then yes. I asked him if he knew what was causing it and he said: “It’s because there are more and more cars on the roads. Maybe too many planes too. Maybe trains as well, but only a little bit.” He likes trains.I said it was because we had too many lights on too — he jumped up and turned off the light straight away.“What do you think it means?” I asked him. “I don’t know. Is the world getting hotter? What will happen?” he asked. “Well, some people’s homes may get covered in water, and other people may not have enough food,” I sa id. “There might be some big storms and hurricanes.”He was quiet and thoughtful, and I couldn’t bear to push it any further. In some places this is being taken very seriously with a thorough check, but in many places the checks are cursory(粗略的) as people don’t think it contributes much to safety. The second change is that the USA is increasing the number of air marshals(空警) on flights to, from and within their country. Action by passengers, whether security personnel or other flyers, is now seen as the most effective improvement in flight security since 9/11.But it is likely that moves announced in 2010 to remove the liquids carry-on restrictions will be quietly dropped for political reasons. No matter how well prepared a traveler is before a trip, there is a chance that security rules will change at the last minute or during travel. For example, for three days over Christmas last year those flying from other countries to the USA were not allowed out of their seats for the last hour of the flight. Some people flying in August found they were unable to carry on any bags after the liquid bomb attempt. There are things passengers can do to save trouble:●Before heading to the airport, check the rules posted on the airline’s website.●Reduce the amount of baggage being carried on board, and especially the items in your pockets. Fewer items mean it’s easier to pass through security-quicker bag checks, less time needed to empty pockets at the metal detector.●Allow more time between connecting flights and before departure.●If you’ll have trouble standing in a queue for an extended period of time then arrange with your airline in advance for wheelchair assistance.●Pick the fast-moving security lines — normally the ones filled with business travelers move fastest.32. Why do many US airports pay little attention to the pat-down for international passengers?A. It takes too much time.B. It needs to be improved.C. It is considered to be dangerous.D. It is considered to be of little value.33. What can we learn about the changes to flight security rules?A. They are often unexpected.B. They are often unnecessary.C. They are not always effective.D. They are the same everywhere.34. How can you pass through airport security more quickly?A. By taking connecting flights.B. By choosing the right line to wait.C. By asking for wheelchair assistance.D. By emptying pockets at the metal detector.35. What does the text focus on about flight security?A. Security rules and how to follow them.B. Security measures and requirements.C. Security changes and tips for flyers.D. Security systems and effects of them.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

Luckily, each first-year student in Paul College takes part in what is called the First-year Innovation and Research Experience, commonly referred to as the FIRE Program, an extracurricular project assigned by the institution. She was able to forge invaluable connections with her fellow students and their peer advisor who had so much first-hand experience with what they all were going through. The biggest highlight of her freshman year was working alongside her FIRE team on a Grand Challenge Project, in which every FIRE team competed against one another in the Undergraduate Research Conference. Each team had to create a unique product that tackled one of the five following real-world problems: “Water is Life”, “Food”, “Threats from Cyberspace”, “Medical Breakthroughs”, and “Addictive Society”. Her team addressed the growing issue of “Addictive Society”. Doing research, collecting facts and organizing discussions or even debates were a huge amount of work before they went to vie with other teams. After weeks of tireless preparation, their collective efforts bore fruit at the Undergraduate Research Conference. They earned a spot in the final round of the conference, where they competed against the top team from each of the other Grand Challenge groups. They were so overcome with pride when they were finally announced as the overall first-place team at the college! If it hadn’t been for her group’s determination, excellent teamwork and their awesome peer advisor Hayley, they would not have been able to accomplish everything they did. This experience would be instrumental in her future.4. What is probably Sansa’s biggest gain from the FIRE Program?A.Financial benefits. B.Academic reputation.C.Good relationships. D.Competitive opponents. When Jason Allen submitted his “Th éâtre D’.opéra Spatial” into the Colorado StateFair’s fine arts competition, the print was an immediate hit, defeating 20 other artists in the “digitally manipulated photography” category to win the first-place blue ribbon and a $ 300 prize.Allen’s piece offers a clear example of how rapidly AI-generated art has advanced. Trained on billions of internet images, the systems have decisively pushed the boundaries of what computers can create. But it has also sparked a massive debate over the meaning of art, with Allen facing accusations that he had been deceiving with something he asked a machine to create.Text-to-image tools like DALL-E 2 and Midjourney have quickly increased in sophistication and have become one of the hottest topics in AI. They can generate not just fake people, objects and locations but mimic entire visual styles. But AI-generated art has been criticized as automated plagiarism (剽窃), because it relies on millions of ingested art pieces that are then parroted (机械地重复) together. It has also fueled deeper fears: blurring the boundaries of reality or interfering with human art.Allen said his art piece shows people need to “get past their denial and fear” of a technology that could give rise to new inventions and reshape our world. “The AI,” he said, “is a tool, just like t he paintbrush is a tool. Without the person, there is no creative force.”Jessica Hair, a 25-year-old receptionist at a doctor’s office who won third place in the competition, said she did not feel as if Allen had acted unfairly and had no hard feelings about his win.Hair said her “Judge, Jury, Executioner”, which depicts a tuxedoed skeleton on a golden throne surrounded by skulls, took 15 hours to create with a stylus (触屏笔) on an iPad Pro. But Allen’s piece took time, effort and subjective judgment, too, and “how do we qualify what is and isn’t art?” she said.8. D.Skeptical.The streets, sidewalks and roofs of cities all absorb heat during the day, making some urban areas across the United States up to 6 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than rural ones during the day—and 22 degrees F hotter at night. These “urban heat islands” can also develop underground as the city heat spreads downward, beneath the surface. And basements, subway tunnels and other underground infrastructure also constantly bleed heat into the surrounding earth, creating hotspots. Now the underground heat is building up as the planet warms.According to a new study of downtown Chicago, underground hotspots may threaten the very same structures that emit the heat in the first place. Such temperature changes make the ground around them expand and contract (收缩) enough to cause potential damage. “Without anyone realizing it, the city of Chicago’s downtown was deforming,” says the study’s author Alessandro F. Rotta Loria, a civil and environmental engineer at Northwestern University. The findings, published in Communications Engineering, expose a “silent hazard (危险)” to civil infrastructure in cities with soft er ground — especially those near water —Rotta Loria says. “There might have been structural issues caused by this underground climate change that happened, and we didn’t even realize,” he adds. While not an immediate or direct danger to human lives, this previously unknown effect highlights the impacts of a lesser-known component of climate change. Similar to climate change above the surface, these underground changes occur over long periods of time. “These effects took decades, a century, to develop,” Rotta Loria says, adding that elevated underground temperatures would likewise take a long time to dissipate (逐渐消失) on their own.But other researchers interviewed for this story all say this wasted energy could also be recycled, presenting an opportunity to both cool the subsurface and save on energy costs. Subway tunnels and basements could be updated with technologies to recapture the heat. For example, water pipes could be installed to run through underground hotspots and pick up some of the heat energy.12. What can we learn about the “urban heat islands”?A.They can develop underground structures.B.They are impacted by global warming.C.They can destroy the ground around.D.They only exist in the United States.13. Why does Alessandro F. Rotta Loria mention “silent hazard” in paragraph 3?A.To discuss structural issues.B.To categorize climate change.C.To explain underground heat.D.To emphasize the neglected reality.14. What will the author probably write about in the paragraph that follows?A.The future of tunnels and basements.B.The reusing approaches of heat energy.C.The cost of maintaining structures.D.The evolution of underground environment.15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.Warming Underground, Weakening SurfaceB.A Silver Lining of Global WarmingC.Urban Silent Islands in the MakingD.A Silent Crisis in Downtown ChicagoIncluding children in the farming lifestyle has many benefits. Sure, it is nice to have the additional help with chores, but it also fosters so much growth, sending our kids down a good path towards who they will someday become. It is possible that our children will grow up to lead lives that do not include farming. 16Through caring for farm animals, kids learn that in life others often come before self. 17 It doesn’t matter if we don’t fee l like it or if we are sick and tired. What matters is that we take care of the animals that take care of us and do so in a timely manner.18 If the work on a farm does not get done, the operation fails. It takes discipline and commitment to get down to business every day, and seeing this in action will give kids a good work attitude. They will know and understand that nothing good comes easy and that they have to work to survive.19 Functioning as part of a productive team will surely be playing a crucial role sooner or later in all walks of life.Additionally, farming teaches patience. 20 It’s especially true for the animals. Cattle will be difficult to control. Horses will run away when you try to catch them. Goats will kick over that bucket of hard-earned milk. A rooster will decide you got too close to his hens and give you a run for your money. In spite of all that, kids will learn to be patient and take things easy. There may not be any instant reward, but in the long-term kids will see the benefit of all their efforts during those hard days.Experiences with My AISome time ago I found an AI app and put it on my iPad.
