We spent the whole afternoon splashing around in the pools and cooling off in the spray of the waterfalls.From Utah, we headed towards the Pacific coast, making our way up the gorgeous Highway 1 with its stunning ocean vistas and towering seaside cliffs. In California, we visited the redwoodforests where trees taller than skyscrapers seemed to stretch on forever. I've never felt so insignificant as when standing amidst those ancient giants. Their enormous trunks were covered in thick bark and had branches bigger than entire regular trees. We also stopped at some beautiful beaches along the coast. I'll never forget bodysurfing the powerful waves at Big Sur and getting tumbled head-over-heels in the foaming surf. The ocean was chilly, but radiantly blue and clear.Our final destination was Seattle where we stayed with my aunt and uncle for a few days. They live right downtown, so we got to experience a bit of city life, going up in the iconic Space Needle, visiting Pike Place Market with its rowdy fish mongers and browsing the dizzying array of shops. We also drove out to Mount Rainier National Park for a day of hiking beneath the looming peak. The wildflower meadows were in full bloom, a vibrant tapestry of colors stretching across the rolling landscape.After nearly a month on the road, we finally made it back home. My legs were sore and my clothes were musty from all the hiking, but I had never felt more alive. We had seen so many amazing sights and had the greatest adventures together as a family. Spending so much time in nature's grandest theaters made me feel so small, yet so fortunate to be able to experiencesuch beauty. These memories of our epic summer road trip will stick with me forever.I returned to school refreshed and with a new perspective after being immersed in so much jaw-dropping natural splendor. Buddy is a golden retriever and he has long, soft fur that is the color of sunshine. Buddy's big brown eyes always seem to be smiling at me.I got Buddy for my 8th birthday three years ago. Mom and Dad let me pick him out from the animal shelter. There were a bunch of cute puppies there, but Buddy was the first one to come right up to me and lick my face with his tiny pink tongue. I knew right away that he was the puppy for me! We've been best friends ever since.Buddy is really smart and he knows a lot of tricks. He can sit, stay, roll over, shake hands, and even play dead! I taught Buddy all his tricks by giving him lots of treats and praise whenever he did what I asked. Dogs love treats and attention!Taking care of Buddy is a lot of work, but it's worth it. I even have to take him to the vet for his shots and check-ups. But Buddy is part of our family, so we don't mind doing all those things for him.The best part about having Buddy is that he is always happy to see me and play with me when I get home from school. We play fetch in the backyard and I throw his favorite tennis ball as far as I can. Buddy zooms after it and scoops it up in his mouth before racing back to me.
