We argue in English compositions for several reasons, all of which stem from the complexity of human interaction and communication.Firstly, disagreement and debate are inherent in human nature. We have diverse perspectives, beliefs, and experiences, which naturally lead to differences in opinion. In an academic setting, such as writing an English composition, these differences can manifest as arguments or disagreements over various topics. Through argumentation,we explore these differences, analyze them, and strive to arrive at a deeper understanding or a resolution.Secondly, arguing in English compositions allows us to hone our critical thinking and communication skills. Constructing arguments requires careful analysis, logical reasoning, and the ability to support our claims with evidence or examples. By engaging in argumentative writing, we not only express our own viewpoints but also learn toevaluate and respond to the perspectives of others. This process strengthens our ability to articulate ideas effectively and persuasively, which is valuable in both academic and real-world contexts.Furthermore, arguing in English compositions serves an educational purpose. It encourages active engagement withthe subject matter and fosters intellectual growth. Through argumentation, we delve deeper into topics, challenge assumptions, and broaden our knowledge and understanding. This active learning process is essential for academic development and the cultivation of critical thinking skills. Moreover, arguing in English compositions facilitates dialogue and exchange of ideas. It creates an environment where individuals can express diverse viewpoints, engage in meaningful discussions, and learn from each other. Through respectful disagreement and debate, we can explore complex issues from multiple perspectives, leading to richerinsights and deeper understanding. In conclusion, we argue in English compositions as anatural expression of human diversity, as a means to develop critical thinking and communication skills, as an educational tool, and as a way to facilitate dialogue and exchange of ideas. Argumentation is an integral part of academic writing, helping us to explore, analyze, and understand the world around us.。

Lecture 7 Argumentation Essay

Lecture 7 Argumentation Essay

a) Introduction: In the introduction, the writer should clarify the controversy and state his/her argument which is often called the thesis or thesis statement.
For example:
The Three Gorges lie in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. After years of investigation and research, many scientists and engineers have suggested that to control the floods brought by the Yangtze River to its lower reaches, a large dam should be built there. But many other scientists and engineers disagreed. Thus a heated debate has begun as to whether the project is beneficial. I am in favor of the project and believe that it will have more advantages than disadvantages.
c) Conclusion : In the conclusion, we may look into the future or summarize our main points. However, we must restate our thesis or argument. For example: 1) In conclusion, the ignorance of inadequate water resources, the ineffective use of water and even the waste of water have combined to cause a water crisis, which we all have to face now. we can not afford to underestimate its urgency any longer. 2) It is high time that people should be educated to have a clearer understanding of the water crisis and that more advanced techniques should be applied to save the world’s water resources. Introduction (clarifying the controversy and stating your viewpoints) Body (sufficient evidence to support your point of view or refute the opposing views by using examples, facts, statistic findings, or personal experiences and observation) Conclusion/coda (restatement of your thesis)

9.结束的时候千万不可以说that is all。

When it comes to writing an argumentative essay, there are several methods that one can use to effectively present their argument. One of the most common methods is the Toulmin model, which involves presenting a claim, providing evidence to support it, addressing counterarguments, and concluding with a warrant that ties everything together.Another effective method is the Rogerian model, which emphasizes finding common ground and understanding between opposing viewpoints. This involves acknowledging the validity of the opposing argument, identifying shared values or goals, and then presenting a solution that satisfies both sides.Personally, I tend to prefer the Toulmin model because it allows for a clear and concise presentation of my argument, while also addressing potential counterarguments. For example, if I were writing an essay arguing for the importance of exercise, I would present my claim that exercise is crucial for overall health and well-being, provide evidence such as studies and personal anecdotes, address potential counterarguments such as time constraints or physical limitations, and conclude with a warrant that ties everything together. However, I also recognize the value of the Rogerian model in certain situations, such as when dealing withhighly divisive topics or when trying to reach a compromise. For instance, if I were writing an essay on gun control, I would acknowledge the valid concerns of both sides, such as the need for personal safety and the right to bear arms, and then propose a solution that takes both perspectivesinto account.Overall, the key to effective argumentation is to carefully consider the audience and purpose of the essay, and then choose a method that best suits those needs.
