McKay was included in a list of university alumni (校友) who had served during the First World War, but his name was unfamiliar to Broad, a specialist in military history. Out of curiosity, Broad spent hours at the local archives (档案馆) in a fruitless search for information on McKay. Tired and discouraged, he finally gave up. On his way out, Broad’s glance happened to fall on an exhibiting case showing some old newspapers. His eye was drawn to an old picture of a young man in a rugby uniform. As he read the words beside the picture, he experienced a thrilling realization. “After looking for him all day, there he was, staring up at me out of the exhibiting case,” said Broad. Excited by the find, Broad asked his students to continue his search. They combed old newspapers and other materials for clues. Gradually, a picture came into view.Captain Alfred Edwin McKay joined the British Royal FlyingCorps in 1916. He downed ten enemy planes, outlived his entire squadron (中队) as a WWI flyer, spent some time as a flying instructor in England, then returned to the front, where he was eventually shot down over Belgium and killed in December 1917. But there’s more to his story. “For a brief time in 1916 he was probably the m ost famous pilot in the world,” says Broad. “He was credited with downing Oswald Boelcke, the most famous German pilot at the time.” Yet, in a letter home, McKay refused to take credit, saying that Boelcke had actually crashed into another German plane.Mc Kay’s war records were destroyed during a World War II air bombing on London — an explanation for why he was all but forgotten. But now, thanks to the efforts of Broad and his students, a marker in McKay’s memory was placed on the university grounds in Nov ember 2007. “I found my eyes filling with tears as I read the word ‘deceased’ (阵亡)next to his name,” said Corey Everrett, a student who found a picture of Mckay in his uniform. “This was such a simple example of the fact that he had been a student just like us, but instead of finishing his time at Western, he chose to fight and die for his country.”51. What made Professor Broad continue his search for more information on McKay?A. A uniform of McKay.B. A footnote about McKay.C. A book on McKay.D. A picture of McKay.52. What did the students find out about McKay?A. He trained pilots for some time.B. He lived longer than other pilots.C. He died in the Second World War.D. He was downed by the pilot Boelcke.53. What is the text mainly about?A. The research into war history.B. The finding of a forgotten hero.C. The pilots of the two world wars.D. The importance of military studies.BEvery object tells a story. Even the most ordinary objects can present to us powerful images. Sometimes it is the ordinary nature of these objects that actually makes them so extraordinary. Such is the case with an old leather shoe in a museum in Alaska. At first glanc e it does not look like much. It is a woman’s shoe of a style popular in the 1890s. But what is unique(独特的) about this shoe is where it was found. It was discovered on the Checkout Pass, the famous trail used by the people seeking gold in Alaska. Who it belonged to or why it was left there is not known. Was it perhaps dropped by accident as the woman climbed up the 1500 stairs carved outface? Or did she throw away goods that she didn’t need in order to travel lighter?Over 100, 000 people with “gold fever” made this trip hoping to become millionaires. Few of them understood that on their way they would have to cross a harsh wildness. Unprepared for such a dangerous journey, many died of starvation and exposure to the cold weather. The Canadian government finally started requiring the gold seekers to bring one ton of supplies with them. This was thought to be enough for a person to survive for one year. They would carry their supplies in backpacks(背包) each weighing up to fifty pounds; it usually took at least 40 trips to get everything to the top and over the pass. Whoever dropped the shoe must have been a brave and determined woman. Perhaps she was successful and made it to Alaska. Perhaps she had to turn back in defeat. No one will ever know for sure, but what we do know is that she took part in one of the greatest adventures in the 19th century.56. Which of the following is right?A. it was found on a famous trailB. it was an important clue to life in the pastC. it at one time belonged to a VIPD. it was a fashionable shoe at that time57. According to this passage, many people who went to Alaska _______.A. eventually became millionairesB. were not properly equippedC. were very poorD. brought with them many shoes58. No matter what happened to the woman who owned the shoe, _______.A. she must have been a brave woman.B. she certainly dropped the shoe on purposeC. her adventurous spirit is definitely admiredD. her other shoes were equally fashionable60. what’s the best title of the passage?A. special shoe whose ower is a woman.B. the sad story about the shoe.C. the old shoe that has a special. story.D. gold seekersCJune 26, 2000 —the Human Genome(基因组) Project, a great $3 billion, 15-year task aimed at drawing the genetic(遗传的) map of humans, is now more than 90 percent completed. Markov managed to reach England and got a job with the BBC, writing something in Bulgaria. Some of the BBC programmes were critical of life in Bulgaria. Perhaps as a result of this, Markov received an anonymous telephone call warning him that he would be killed. In September 1978, Markov stopped his car in London and started to walk to his office. When he was passing a bus line, a man in the line seemed to drop his umbrella accidently. Markov felt a sudden pain in the leg. When Markov reached his office, he spoke about the matter to a friend. A few hours later, he began to feel hot. He was sent to hospital and died four days later. The doctors examined his body, and they were puzzled about the cause of his death. Scientists were asked to help and they found a tiny metal pellet in Markov’s leg. The scientists believed that the two holes in it must contain an unknown poison in them.A few weeks before Markov was “shot” with a poisonedpellet fired from an umbrella, another Bulgarian had the same experience in France. Towards the end of August 1978, Kostov felt a sharp pain in the back when he was leaving a railway station in Paris. He was ill for a few days but became well. When news of Markov’s death became known, Kostov was asked to return to hospital for examination. Doctors found a tiny pellet in his back, but it had stuck in an area from which the poison had not been able to spread. The police in both countries are still searching for the reasons why both men were attacked. Though there are more and more ways for people to get connected online, they are feeling lonely and actually communicating less.Rob, a 28-year-old young man from Philadelphia, the USA, is doing something special to prove (证明) the importance of face-to-face communication. He has spent over four years having hour-long face-to-face conversations with strangers. An hour provides him the perfect time to really get to know someone on a deeper level. For Rob, connecting with strangers, is the best way to spend his time.During a typical day, Rob spends a lot of time communicating with at least four strangers, when he is free. And since 2015, he has spoken to more than 2,800 people. To complete his goal of 10,000 conversations, Rob developed a 10-year plan, and he has taken his project on the road to New York, Los-Angeles and other cities. He takes lots of photos to record all of his journeys. No matter what people want to talk about, his first rule is to listen. As a patient listener, he lets the other person direct the conversation wherever they want it to go, and many times, it feels like old friends catching up. Everyone has a special story to share, and Rob makes sure he listens to it.“When you meet people one-on-one and hear their stories, you start to understand what different lives are really like, and what things you’ve taken for grant ed (视······理所当然) .” Rob said.24. __________ 25. __________ 26. __________ 27. __________ 28. __________CIf a friend offers you help, what will you do in return? You just say “Thank you”. Or you may write a thank-you note which is more formal and polite. But most people don’t do that.“It seems that people don’t give thanks to others quite often,” Amit Kumar from University of Texas says. Why are people hesitant (犹豫的) about sending Array thank-you notes? And how do most people feel when theyreceive one? Kumar and his team asked some students to writea thank-you letter to another person through an e-mail. Then, they questioned both the writer and the recipient (收件者)about the letter and how it made them feel. They found that people didn’t lik e to write thank-younotes because they felt like they had to think too much about it.They would worry about what and how to say. In addition, some writers also felt that it might be awkward (尴尬的) for the recipient to receive a thank-you letter. But the fact is that people really like receiving thank-you notes. “When they receive thank-you notes, they feelespecially warm in their hearts,” Kumar says. “They don’t really feel awkward at all.” This study reminds us that simple and small changes in our every day life can make a big difference on how we treat people and how we feel. So next time you are offered a helping h and, don’t hesitate to write a thank-you note.29. 2021-2022年高二英语下学期第三周周练试题
2021-2022年高二英语下学期第三周周练试题第一节. A.阅读理解(每题2.5分,共10分)Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be game of some kind football, hockey, golf, or tennis. It may be mountaineering(登山). Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks on high mountains? This astonishment is caused probably by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their relaxation.Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of a different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods. If we pare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which theirlives may depend, there is obviously teamwork. The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty, and most international tennis champions are in their early twenties. But it is not unusual for man of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they probably climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.32.The main difference between a sport and a game lies in ______.A. activityB. rulesC. uniformD. skills 33.Mountaineering can be called a team sport because ______.A. mountaineers depend on each other while climbingB. teams pete against each otherC. it is an Olympic eventD. there are five climbers on each team34.Mountaineers pete against ______.A. each otherB. other teamsC. natureD. international standards35.Which of the following might be the best title?A. Why is the man born as Samuel Clemens more widely known as Mark Twain? It has something to do with his love of the Mississippi River, and his time as a pilot of the great steamboats. "Mark twain" was an old term used on the river. The story was for Clemens’own, and other pilots’amusement. However, a man named Bart Bowen gave it to one of the New Orleans newspapers. Captain Sellers saw and read the piece, and was deeply hurt by it. He never published his opinion again, and Clemens felt badabout the part he had played in this.In 1863, Clemens was out west, in Carson City. He heard that Sellers had passed away. Then he decided to use the name, Mark Twain, for himself. Soon, Clemens became known as Mark Twain, on paper and in real life.In fact, he liked to be a steamboat pilot so much that he never considered any other profession. Doctors at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, did the study. The team studied a chemical found in black, green, oolong and pekoe tea. This chemical is an amino acid called L-theanine. The scientists say it may increase the strength of gamma delta Tcells. That’s the letter T, not the drink. Gamma delta T cells are part of the body’s defense. First, the researchers mixed some of these cells with antigens found in the amino acid. Antigens help the body react to infection. Then the scientists added some bacteria. Within twenty-four hours, the cells produced a lot of interferon, a substance that fights infection. Cells not mixed with the antigens did not produce interferon. In the second part of the study, eleven people drank five to six cups of black tea every day. Ten other people drank the same amount of instant coffee. That is dried coffee mixed with hot water. Two weeks later, and again two weeks after that, the researchers tested the blood of all twenty-one people. They also looked at what happened when they added bacteria to the blood cells. They found that the tea drinkers produced five times more interferon after they started drinking tea. The coffee drinkers did not produce interferon.Doctor Jack Bukowski led the study. He says the antigens added to the gamma delta T cells were responsible for the increased reaction to the bacteria. He says that the study also showed that the cells were able to remember the bacteria and fight them again the next time.Earlier research already has found that tea can help prevent heart disease and cancer. Doctor Bukowski says the new stud y must be repeated by more people. “If the findings prove to be true,” he says, “then tea drinking might also help protect against bacterial infections.” He says the amino acid L-theanine could be removed from the tea and used as a drug to strengthen theb ody’s defenses.1. We may know from the text that ______ can be found in different kinds of tea.A. L-theanineB. Gamma delta T cellsC. interferonD. bacteria2. Tea may help strengthen the body’s defense system because it helps ______.A. to add some bacteria to the blood cellsB. the body to produce more gamma delta T cellsC. the body to produce more interferonD. to mix antigens with some of the cells in the body3. According to Dr Bukowski, ______.A. the findings of the study have already proved to be trueB. further study is needed to prove the findings trueC. he has taken some amino acid L-theanine from tea and made a drug with itD. he is not sure whether tea help prevent heart disease and cancer4. What would be the best title for this text?A. Tea Is Better than CoffeeB. Our Body Needs TeaC. Tea Can Help Prevent CancerD. Tea May Help Fight InfectionBRecently there was a major discovery in the scientific research — the mapping of all DNA in a human gene(基因) is complete. Couple of years ago, this seems an impossible task for scientist to accomplish. All this progress in science leads us to believe that the day, when the human being will be cloned, is not far away. Human cloning has always been a topic of argument, in terms of morality(道德) or religion.Taking a look at why cloning might be beneficial, among many cases; it is arguable that parents who are known to be at risk of passing a genetic limitation to a child could make use of cloning. If the clone was free of genetic limitations, then the other clone would be as well. The latter could be inserted in the woman and allowed to ripen to term. Moreover, cloning wouldenable women, who can’t get pregnant, to have children of their own.Cloning humans would also mean that organs could be cloned, so it would be a source of perfect transfer organs. This surely would be greatly beneficial to millions of unfortunate people around the world that are expected to lose their lives due to failure of single (or more) organ(s). It is also arguable that a ban on cloning may be unlawful and would rob people of the right to reproduce and limit the freedom of scientists.Arguments against cloning are also on a perfectly practical side. Primarily, I believe that cloning would step in the n ormal “cycle” of life. There would be a large number of same genes, which reduce the chances of improvement, and, in turn, development — the fundamental reason how living things naturally adapt to the ever-changing environment. Life processes failing to do so might result in untimely(不适时的)disappearance. Furthermore, cloning would make the uniqueness that each one of us possesses disappear, thus leading to creation of genetically engineered groups of people for specific purposes, and chances are that those individuals would be regarded as “objects” rather than people in the society.Scientists haven’t 100% guaranteed that the first cloned humans will be normal. Thus, this could result in introduction of additional limitations in the human “gene-pool”.Regard ing such arguable topics in “black or white” approach seems very innocent to me personally. We should rather try to look at all “shades” of it. I believe that cloning is only legal if its purpose is for cloning organs; not humans. Then we could regard this as for “saving life” instead of “creating life”. I believe cloning humans is morally and s socially unacceptable.5. Which of the following is true according to the passage?A. Genetic limitation will be beneficial for some women.B. A large number of genes will prevent us from developing.C. Prohibition(禁止) of cloning might limit the freedom of scientists.D. First cloned humans might be normal according g to scientists.6. What’s the author’s opinion on cloning?A. Cloning should be entirely banned.B. Cloning should be used in creating life.C. Cloning will take away the right to reproduce.D. Cloning is acceptable if it is used for cloning organs.7.
