The Characteristics of American Education andImplicationsWang Yuting1.IntroductionAmerican education is considered as the best one in the world. English novelist Marry Webb said:“Education is like a big window opening ”. I think this saying best described the characteristic of American education--containment. There is no age or nation limits on learning. Everyone has the right to get education in American.This paper is going to talk about the characteristics of American education and the implications it brings.2.Characteristics of American EducationAmerican education can be divided into three parts. Early Child Education, Elementary and high School Education and College and University. First, let me introduce the first section.2.1 Early Child EducationIn American, early child education is regarded as necessary and beneficial. In order to become accustomed to school life, almost three million five-year-old children need to go to kindergarten each year .What‟s more, they should have a half-day session.However, some children are sent to classroom situation at even a younger age. These situations are called Nursery Schools or Day Care Centers. Day Care Centers usually take care of the pre-school children whose mothers are always busy working. Some of these children from infancy on and they often stay in Day Care Center for a whole day. At present, mothers become more busy, so more and more Day Care Centers is neededSome of today‟s Day Care Centers are profit-making, charging for tuition fees. But some are non-profit centers run by philanthropic, religious, governmental or industrial sponsors. “These are subsidized and charge a graduated fee according to income.”[4]I think it is a good way for charging.When children are three to five years old, they often go to the Nursery Schools to accept half-day sessions ranging from twice a week to five days a week. Nursery School usually charge tuition, though some are subsidized and some offer scholarships.Next, let‟s move to the second part.2.2 Elementary and high School EducationWhen American children at about age six, they need to go to grammar school or elementary school. After finishing grades one through eight, they enter high school to finish next four grades. However, in other school systems, children go to elementary school to finish grades one through six. Then entering into junior high school to finish grades seven through nine. Finally, they enter senior high school to finish grade ten through twelve.American students start their school day at 9:00 a.m. and ends about 3:30 p.m. In addition,with becoming high school students, they go to school half an hour early and ends at the same time. In a week, they have class for five days, Monday through Friday. Just like us, they also have holidays and summer vocations. As for courses, it‟s almost same from us. Perhaps, the most difference is the choice of studying a foreign language. “W e Chinese often choose English but American usually study Latin, French ,Spanish or German.”Another difference is that we usually have different teachers in different subjects, but they could have the same one. Moreover, we usually have the same classmates but they will meet a different group of students.2.3 College and UniversityThe American university system can be divided into four kinds-the university、the four-year undergraduate institution which also called colleges、the technical training institution and the two –year or community college. If someone has high school record and teat core are good enough, then he may attend college.At the college level, the academic year is about nine mouths long. After completing four academic years with acceptable grades, the students earn bachelor‟s degrees. As for American university, it can offer three main categories of graduate degrees. If you further your study for two academic years after graduate, you can earn a master‟s degree. A PH.D degree usually takes at least three years beyond the master‟s.Unlike china, American colleges or universities don‟t use concrete fractions to respect students performance. They use grades, from the highest to the lowest, run A、B、C、D、F.Colourful activities exist in American campus too, such as fraternities and sororities or different kinds of clubs. Athletics is also very important on campus. Many schools often hold basketball、swimming and track competitions.Finally, let‟s talk about the tuition. A typical college now charges about $3000 a year for the room、the board and tuition. If a students attend a eastern private college, he may pay for at least $3500 and probably closer to $5000 a year, including tuition、housing、food、books and personal expense. Only $1500 is needed, if a student attends a state college in a rural area. But, the lowest tuition fees is state colleges and universities, ranging from about $60 to about $450. What‟s more, studying hard, you will get the scholarships.3.Implications on Chinese EducationAs far as I am concerned, American Education is quite different from Chinese Education. Some are good and worth learning, some are bad.On the one hand, I want to talk about their teaching methods. As we all know, American attaches much importance to Individualism、Freedom and Equality, so their teaching methods are more flexible. They don‟t have fixed seat, fixed classroom, fixed classmates. Because scores are so very important, American teachers often encourage students to ask questions not just answering, to think in a different way, to do the things on their own. So American students seem more creative and critical thinking. I think, Chinese education is weak in this aspect and should learn from American ,changing the rigid teaching method and paying attention to development of critical thinking.In addition, in elementary and high school, American students‟school life is relaxed and school time is shorter than china. They don‟t emphasize the grades, so a lot if time can be used to do out-class activities and study pressure not heavy. However, another condition appears untilstudents come into university. It‟s easy to enter but uneasy to graduate. As a result they need to study harder and harder in order to graduate. However, in china, the situation is totally different. With the intention to enter a satisfying university, we usually study extremely hard in high school. While after entering the university, most of us become relaxed, resulting some students even lost themselves. In this aspect, I consider that American is worth learning very well. At a very young age, we are not very sure about our life goal. We shouldn‟t be given much pressure and we can do more other things, such as building our body by exercise, joining more activities to enrich our life. When we grow up, it‟s time that we made sure what kind of person we want to be and struggled for it.Morever, American government emphasizes vocational education very much, and it is very close to the market, enterprise and general education. In the high school, students already have received vocational education. American people think it can train students‟ practical ability and I think so. When children are young ,we should not only teach them knowledge but also train their practical ability.On the other hand, I want to focus on the reasons. Why American education is different from china.“American‟s right to education major at the state, the state Board of Education School, District Board of Education, the commission has considerate independence and autonomy.”[1]All the things about education is the state‟s things, the federal government should not intervene, which contribute to the enthusiasm of the local school. “But, china‟s education systerm are centralized administrative model, mainly as follows: all educational activities must accept the guidance and supervision of state power. Local schools follow the central government‟s policies,”[1]resulting in china education lack of vigour. So here ,I recommend that our government should give more free developments to education. If we take example by the American, maybe the situation will much better.4.Conclusionas a whole, the differences between culture result in the differences of education. American core value make it‟s education more free and independence. While china is effected by Confucianism, so we Chinese education is more conservative and traditional. Learning from the American, we can make great progress. Nevertheless, don‟t ignore the disadvantages of American education. Over free education also make American students love play, lose morality. Religious belief in the citizens of the population accounted for about 91%.America has many idiomatical festival as like the thanksgiving and Christmas . The thanksgiving day is on the 4th Thursday in November . On this day , Americans give thanks for the blessings they have enjoyed during the year and celebrate with dinners and happy reunions. Christmas season is the most festive time of the year in the United States. Students from grammar school through college have to two weeks' vocation .Many families go away for the holidays ,perhaps to ski in Colorado or to swim and sunbathe in Florida . Though in words it is a normal principle here in China, it’s m ostly not the case in reality. Take an example of what usually happens in a bank. Here when we are in a middle-sized bank, and suppose we are talking with the cashier, it always tends to have someone butt in, claiming that his or her request takes only one second.And it seems that we have already been accustomed to it. So has the cashier. But in western countries, it never applies. It is always rude that you butt in while the cashier is serving his customer. No matter how little time your request costs, the cashier, more often than not, is likely to turn you down. Only one customer at a time is his principle. Thirdly, change stuff. Suppose I am in a shopping mall and the stuff I purchase cost me 142 RMB. While lining up at the casher’s and happening to check my wallet, I find I have 200 RMB and two one-Yuan coins. What will I do? To give the cashier 200 RMB, or give him 200 RMB and the two one-Yuan coins so that he could return me 60 RMB, which is more convenient for both of us.I think when the Chinese were in this situation, they would mostly choose the latter one. But in America, they won’t do so. If you try it . The cashier did not understand.So the western people are prone to lack of flexibility while doing their work.
