History
The history of Washington, D.C. (officially known as the District of Columbia) is tied to its role as the capital of the United States. The site along the Potomac River was chosen for the capital city by President George Washington. The city came under attack during the War of 1812 in an episode known as the Burning of Washington.

Wisconsin Avenue bridge
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, as viewed from the Wisconsin Avenue bridge in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

National Mall
The National Mall is a large, open park area in the center of the city. Located in the center of the Mall are the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Pier. Also located on the mall are the Lincoln Memorial, the National World War II Memorial at the east end of the Reflecting Pool, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Upon the government's return to the capital, it had to manage reconstruction of numerous public buildings, including the White House and United States Capitol. The McMillan Plan of 1901 helped restore and beautify the downtown core area, including establishing the National Mall, along with numerous monuments and museums.
