They only take control in emergencies. Otherwise, they make observations that help the company's engineers improve the driverless cars. The driverless cars already have covered more than 2 million miles in six years of testing on private tracks, on highways and city streets. The vehicles have travelled more than half that distance in automated mode (自动模式),with one test driver in place to take control of the car if the technology fails or a potentially dangerous situation arises. Meanwhile, another driver sits in the front passenger seat taking notes of the problems that need to be fixed. The job of the test driver requires a sense of adventure, something Torcellini acquired when he began to surf in high school. His other hobbies include fishing and scuba-diving.While the engineers who are programming the robot cars have technical backgrounds, most of the test drivers don't. Torcellini worked in a bookstore. He dreamed of becoming a writer. He ended up at Google in 2009. Espinosa, 27, was working in a bicycle shop before he was hired as a test driver two years ago. Stephanie Villegas, 28, was a swim instructor, before becoming a test driver. Other test drivers were former soldiers and former photographers. They all share at least one thing in common: spotless driving records. Besides this, the job also requires a combination of good judgement, patience and fearlessness. Before they are entrusted (托付) with the cars,Google's test drivers must complete three-week training courses. The drivers are taught to take control of the robot car whenever there is any moment of doubt or danger.Google employs “dozens” of test drivers but won't reveal the precise number. California law requires two test drivers per vehicle.21.What do you know about Brian Torcellini?A.He is in charge of a crew of test drivers.B.He used to be a swim instructor.C.He led a secret Google project.D.He has technical backgrounds.22.The driver sitting in the front passenger seat is responsible for .A.fixing the car problemsB.driving in emergenciesC.recording the car problemsD.monitoring the car driver23.We can infer that .A.Stephanie Villegas is interested in scuba-divingB.Brian Torcellini is very fond of literatureC.Espinosa is an excellent cyclist in CaliforniaD.driverless cars are very popular in California24.The underlined word “this” refers to “”.A.having good judgementB.having clean driving recordsC.breaking the traffic rulesD.having technical backgroundsⅥ. I was standing in the checkout line behind a woman who looked to be in her 60s. Other forms of parental involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a child's class, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic. The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting where schools expect them to act as partners in their children's education. Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn.Keith Robinson, the author of the study, said, "I really don't know if the public is ready for this but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids' education that leads to declines in their academic performance. One of the things that was consistently negative was their parents' help with homework." Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the tasks."They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now, or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they're still offering advice."Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant.Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because "children with good academic success do have involved parents", admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success. "A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives."underlined expression "parental involvement" in Paragraph 1 probablymeans .' expectation on children's health' participation in children's education' control over children's life' plan for children's futureis the major finding of Robinson's study?parents raise children in a more scientific way.kids for bad marks is mentally damaging.involvement is not so beneficial as expected.are not able to help with children’s homework.example of Asian-American parents implies that parentsshould .children realize the importance of schoolinga specific life goal for their childrenmore time improving their own livesa more active part in school management14、根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Module 1 Life in the future素材垃圾分类

Module 1 Life in the future素材垃圾分类

单元检测(十九)Life in the FutureⅠ. ALindha was a student at Kansas State University. She is here to tell us about her time in Kansas in the city of Manhattan. What were the best things about it?Manhattan has a great university feel to it. I loved going to the football games. We would spend the whole day tailgating (开车尾派对) outside the stadium, drinking beer and having a big barbecue. What do you think of the people there?People from Kansas are so friendly. However, I'd say that many Kansans are very sheltered and don't pay much attention to life outside the US. But as the grandma of my Kansan friend might say, “We're still sweet as pie.”What were the worst things about being there? It's very difficult to get around Kansas without a car. Everything's so spread out and there isn't really a public transportation system. What was the funniest thing that happened while you were there?I remember one trip I took with my friend to her grandparents' house. They had horses and asked me if I wanted to go for a ride. I had never ridden a horse before but I decided to have a try. I hopped (跳上) on and everything was fine for a minute. But then the horse went crazy. It started bucking (猛然弯背跃起) and making these crazy noises. I thought I was going to die. My friend eventually calmed the horse down but not before I had destroyed an entire section of the fence. I thought they would be mad but they were just in shock — they couldn't believe I had stayed on the horse for that long.Did you have any other problems?I'm Swedish, but my English is pretty good because my dad's English. But it took a little while to get used to the accent. The people from the cities don't have a strong accent, but the people from the country are hard to understand sometimes. You also have to be careful with the weather. In the winter it was absolutely freezing, and during the summer it was so hot I thought I might die. Of course, they have heating and air conditioning everywhere.
