BMany parents wonder why their children should study art.Tosome, art is nice but useless. They consider it unnecessary to humanexistence. To others, art is important and meets some human needsthat can't be met any other way.So what is the purpose of art?The earliest art—cave drawings and the like—certainly had some important purposes. This type of art was a record of events,a means of sharing stories, and a way to pass on information.People created primitive (原始的) art to show the world around them—pictures were usually of animals, birds, plants, and humans in scenes of daily life, especially hunting. In recent centuries, art has become more complicated. The spoken and written words have become our major means of communication,so art can be more than just a chronicle of historic events or a way to share stories, although it still can be those things as well.Through art, artists share their feelings in a way that brings on something from the viewers. The feelings one experiences when viewing art may be pleasing or not.The artist is trying to express something; it's up to you to figure out what that is.Artis a conversation between you and the artist; they put themselves into their work, and you bring yourself to your explanation of it.Because of the feelings that art can bring on—feelings that usually cannot be brought on by other means—art is necessary to human existence.Art meets our needs for selfexpression, communication, and our desire for connection with other humans across centuries and cultures. Now,we can conclude that art is very important.Since it is important, kids should learn it.【解题导语】作者认为艺术很重要,小孩应该学习艺术。

2019-2020学年高中英语 Unit 1 Art Period One Warming Up

Unit 1 ArtWhen the Apollo astronauts landed on the Moon in 1969,millions of people were rather sad.The person to blame for this was an artist named Chesley Bonestell. For many years,Bonestell had been creating beautifully detailed paintings of the Moon and the planets.Viewers of his artwork were unhappy because the real Moon did not look like Bonestell’s pictures of it.As a space artist,Bonestell tried to make his drawings look exciting and as true as the Moon is.But in the 1940s and 1950s,no one had ever seen another planet up close.Yet Bonestell’s paintings looked so real that some people thought they were photographs. As a young man Bonestell studied architecture—the art and science of designing and making buildings. In 1938 Bonestell became a special effects artist in Hollywood. It was here that he learned he could improve his paintings by following the methods used in the movies. In 1944,a popular magazine published a series of Bonestell’s paintings of the planet Saturn. He drew Saturn as if it were seen by someone standing on each of the planet’s moons. The results were dazzling(耀眼的).Within a few years,Bonestell’s artwork appeared regularly in magazines and books on astronomy and space flight. Many of Bonestell’s artworks had been right all along. But the biggest surprise was the Moon.Someone asked Bonestell what he was thinking when he saw the first pictures from the Moon.“I thought how wrong I was!” he said.“My mountains were sharp, and they aren’t on the Moon.”But he shouldn’t have felt bad.No space artist had ever before taken so many people to so many faraway worlds. In the years just before the first manned space flights,Bonestell’s artworks prepared peop le for the amazing space adventure to come.判断正(T)误(F)1.The real Moon did not look like Bonestell’s pictures of it.(T)2.Bonestell’s artworks were not highly thought of by the people.(F)Period One Warming Up & Reading—Prereading匹配左边的单词与右边的汉语意思[第一组]1.realistic A.n.信任;信心;信念2.abstract B.adj.现实主义的;逼真的;现实的3.faith C.n.目标;目的;vi.&vt.瞄准;(向某方向)努力4.aim D.adj.常规的;传统的;因循守旧的5.conventional E.adj.抽象的;深奥的;n.摘要答案 1.B 2.E 3.A 4.C 5.D[第二组]6.typical A.adj.明显的;明白的7.evident B.n.巧合(的事);(事情、口味、故事等)相合8.adopt C.adj.典型的;有代表性的9.possess D.vt.采用;采纳;收养10.coincidence E.vt.拥有;具有;支配答案 6.C 7.A 8.D 9.E 10.B[第三组]11.controversial A.adj.荒谬的;可笑的12.attempt B.vt.预言;预告;预测13.predict C.adj.争论的;争议的14.shadow D.n.努力;尝试;企图;vt.尝试;企图15.ridiculous E.n.阴影;影子答案11.C 12.D 13.B 14.E 15.AStep 1FastreadingSkim the passage and do the following exercises.1.What does the passage mainly tell us?A.How religious paintings developed.B.How oil paintings developed.C.How Impressionist paintings developed.D.How Western art developed.2.In what way is the passage developed?A.By time. B.By learning modern art,the Impressionists begin to look at their environment in new ways.C.With the modern artists’ help, the Impressionists know how to paint outdoors. D.Without the Impressionists, maybe we would not see many kinds of modern art styles. 答案 DStep 3PostreadingAfter reading the passage, please fill in the following blanks.Art 1.is influenced(influence) by the customs and faith of a people.Styles in Western art have changed many times.During the Middle Ages, the main aim of painters was to represent religious themes.A 2.conventional(convention) artist of this period was not interested in showing nature and people 3.as they really were.A 4.typical(type) picture at this time was full of religious symbols. However, during the Renaissance, new ideas and values 5.gradually(gradual) replaced those held in the Middle Ages.People began to concentrate less on religious themes and adopt a 6.more(much) humanistic attitude to life. One of the most important discoveries during this period was how 7.to draw(draw) things in perspective. As Europe changed a great deal from a mostly agricultural society to a mostly industrial 8.one in the late 19th century, these changes led to new painting styles. The Impressionists were the first painters 9.to work(work) outdoors. There are scores of modern art styles, but without the Impressionists, many of these painting styles might not exist. No one can predict 10.what painting styles there will be in the future.Step 4Sentencelearning1.By coincidence, oil paints were also developed at this time, which made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper.[句式分析] 本句是主从复合句,which引导非限制性定语从句,指代前面整个句子的内容;从句中made the colours used in paintings look richer and deeper是“make+宾语+宾补”结构,宾补是不带to的不定式短语;过去分词短语used in paintings作后置定语,修饰colours。

2019-2020年高中英语Unit1Art-learningaboutlanguagePart One: Teaching Design (第一部分:教学设计)Period 2: A sample lesson plan for Learning about Language(Subjunctive Mood (1) I wish I could/ did/ would… If I did …, I would do…)AimsTo discover and learn to use useful words and expressionsTo discover and learn to use useful structuresProceduresI. Warming up by underlining time expressionsHistorical texts make use of time expressions to tell stories. Now go back to page 1 and underline all the expressions about time.II. Doing vocabulary exercisesTurn to page 3 and do exercises 2, 3 and 4.III. Learning about The Subjunctive MoodExamine the verbs in each of the following sentences:1. If Harrison were chosen to be the next chief executive officer of the corporation, several controversial hiring practices would change.2. If I were you, I would increase my weekly contribution to the pany-sponsored retirement fund.3. I wish that his report were longer.4. We remend that the trip be postponed because of violence in the region.5. The finance department requests that he submit updated budget projections each month. All the above sentences are correct. Two terms apply to the mood of English verbs: indicative and subjunctive. An indicative verb makes a statement that is factual, whereas a verb in the subjunctive mood is used to indicate a situation or condition that is hypothetical, doubtful, or conditional. In the indicative mood, we would never write "Harrison were," "I were," "report were," "trip be," or "he submit," but these verbs are correct in the examples above because each of the sentences is written in the subjunctive mood; that is, in every case, the sentence is describing a situation that is hypothetical or conditional:1. Harrison is not now the C.E.O., but hypothetically he could be chosen for that position. The conditional nature of the position is suggested by the word if.2. Again, as the word if makes clear, I am not, in fact, you. So once again the situation is hypothetical and conditional: I would save more only under the condition that I became you.3. His report is not, in fact, longer, so the sentence speaks of a hypothetical situation.4. The trip is not currently postponed, so the subjunctive mood is appropriate to suggest a possibility, not an actuality.5. He is not currently submitting reports monthly, so we use the subjunctive mood to discuss the possibility--not the actuality--of his doing so.For all verbs except to be, the present subjunctive mood is most often made by omitting the characteristic s ending on verbs with third-person singular subjects. Thus, whereas in the indicative mood we would write "man leaves," in the subjunctive mood we would omit the s on theverb leave: "The judge insisted that the man not leave town." For the verb to be, we simply use be for all present tense subjunctive mood verbs and were for all past tense forms, regardless of whether the subject is singular or plural. The Columbia Guide to Standard American English points out that while many subjunctive-mood phrases are monly used in ordinary speech--"if I were you," "if need be," "far be it from me," and so on--strict use of the subjunctive mood is rare, even in the most formal speaking and writing situations. Very few people would write, for example, "If he arrive on time, we will have dinner before the show." However, if a form of the verb to be were used in that sentence, all polished writers would agree that the subjunctive is necessary: "If he were [not was] to arrive on time, we could have dinner before the show."The Harbrace College Handbook lists other mon, fixed expressions that are stated in the subjunctive mood: "so be it," "be that as it may," "as it were," and "God bless you". TEST YOURSELFWhich of the following sentences need verbs in the subjunctive mood?1. If I was Sam, I would hire an assistant now before the hiring freeze takes effect.2. The mittee suggested that Dr. Jones is chosen as the next chief of staff.3. As August approaches, every school child wishes that his or her vacation was longer.4. It is critical that every potential donor gives blood during this shortage.III. Reading and discoveringNow read the text again to find as many examples of Subjunctive Mood (I wish I could/ did/ would… If I did …, I would do…) as possible.IV. Closing downTo end the period you are to do grammar Ex.1 & 2 on page 4& 5.温馨提示:最好仔细阅读后才下载使用,万分感谢!。
