- 1 - Unit 5 Canada—“The True North” Ⅰ.阅读理解 A [2020·成都第一次诊断]For six hundred years, the Tower of London's most exotic(异国风情的) prisoners were animals. The Royal Menagerie(动物园) began as a result of kings exchanging rare and strange animals as gifts. In 1235, Henry Ⅲ was delighted to be presented with three wildcats by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Ⅱ. These inspired him to start a zoo at the Tower. Henry's “wildcats\”, although described as leopards, were probably lions. These are the ancestors of the three lions that still appear on the England football team's shirts today. In 1251 the lions were joined by a “white bear\” probably a polar bear — given by the King of Norway. In 1255, the King of France sent the first elephant ever seen in England and “people flocked together to see the novel sight\”. Sadly, the elephant died in 1258. Poor treatment and cramped conditions meant many of the animals did not survive for long. But the Royal Menagerie continued to grow. Edward I created a permanent new home for the Royal Menagerie at the western entrance to the Tower, which became known as the Lion Tower. The terrifying sounds and smells of wild animals must have both impressed and scared visitors. By 1622, the collection had been extended to include three eagles, two pumas, a tiger and a jackal, as well as lions and leopards, who were the main attractions. However, the end of the Royal Menagerie came in the 1830s. Campaigners had begun to raise concerns, and the animals were expensive, occasionally dangerous and a nuisance to the guardsmen. The Duke of Wellington sent 150 of the beasts to a new zoo in Regent's Park, today's London Zoo. Despite Alfred Cops's best efforts to carry on, several further incidents including an escaped wolf and a monkey that bit a guardsman's leg convinced King William Ⅳ to shut down the Royal Menagerie for good in 1835. The remaining animals were sold to zoos and travelling shows and the Lion Tower was later demolished. 1.What do we know about the elephant presented in 1255? A.It caused big trouble. - 2 -

D.The financial burden to raise the animals. 4.Which is the best title for the text? A.The Royal Menagerie B.Gifts Presented to the King C.Tourist Attractions in London D.Miserable Life in the Lion Tower B [2020·郑州市高三第三次质量预测]For as long as we've known about it, humans have searched for a cure for cancer. Across the world, countless amounts of time and money have been spent on researching a way to stop this terrible disease. But now, it seems like the answer could have been inside our own bodies the whole time. Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US, a government agency that's responsible for health care, approved a new form of gene therapy that could mean the end of a certain type of cancer. The therapy allows scientists to “train” the immune(有免疫力的) cells of sick patients to fight leukemia — a form of blood cancer that mostly affects young people. The exciting new treatment works by removing healthy immune cells from the patient, known as T-cells, which are then changed to be able to “hunt down” cancer cells. The cells are then put back into the patient before they begin to get rid of the patient's leukemia over time, similar to how the body fights off other illnesses. “This is truly an exciting new day for cancer patients,\” Louis J.DeGernnaro, president of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, said in a news release. Up until now, a long and painful marrow transplant(骨髓移植) was the only option - 3 -

for many leukemia patients. In this procedure, healthy blood cells are taken from a donor and placed into the sick patient, who also has to go through chemotherapy(化疗) to allow their body to adjust to the new cells. But with a recovery rate of around 83% — according to a news release published by the FDA — it's hoped that the days of painful trips to the hospital, or even death, are over for leukemia sufferers. “We're entering a new frontier in medical innovation with the ability to reprogram a patient's own cells to attack a deadly cancer,\” FDA representative Scott Gottlieb said in the release. “New technologies such as gene and cell therapies hold the potential to transform medicine and our ability to treat and even cure many incurable illnesses.\” 5.What is the author's main purpose in writing the passage? A.To compare different ways of curing leukemia. B.To report on a breakthrough in cancer treatment. C.To explore the potential of gene and cell therapies. D.To show scientists' efforts in search of a cure for cancer. 6.How does the new treatment for leukemia work? A.By using changed T-cells to destroy cancer cells. B.By replacing sick blood cells with healthy ones. C.By removing sick blood cells during a marrow transplant. D.By using chemotherapy to improve the patient's immune system. 7.What can be inferred about the new therapy for leukemia sufferers? A.It can save them many more trips to the hospital. B.It can improve their ability to fight off all kinds of cancer. C.It can give them a better chance of survival and recovery. D.It can reduce their pain in the process of the marrow transplant. 8.What is Scott Gottlieb's attitude toward gene and cell therapies? A.Doubtful. B.Optimistic. C.Worried. D.Casual. Ⅱ.七选五 [2020·安徽省百所重点中学三模] With time and experience, most adults know that not getting enough sleep can be harmful to us. Too bad, teens don't see that connection so clearly. It's up to

For example, someone who likes to spend a lot of time sitting or lying down while watching television is sometimes called a couch potato. A couch is a piece of furniture that people sit on while watching television.Robert Armstrong, an artist from California, developed the term “couch potato” in 1976. Several years later, he listed the term as a trademark with the UnitedStates government. Mr Armstrong also helped write a funny book about life as a fulltime television watcher. It is called the OfficialCouchPotatoHandbook.Couch potatoes enjoy watching television just as mouse potatoes enjoy working on computers. A computer mouse is the device that moves the pointer, or cursor on a computer screen. The description of mouse potato became popular in 1993. American writer Alice Kahn is said to have invented the term to describe young people who spend a lot of time using computers.Too much time inside the house using a computer or watching television can cause someone to get cabin fever. A cabin is a simple house usually built far away from the city. People go to a cabin to relax and enjoy quiet time.Cabin fever is not really a disease. However, people can experience boredom and restlessness if they spend too much time inside their homes. This is especially true during the winter when it is too cold or snowy to do things outside. Often children get cabin fever if they cannot go outside to play. So do their parents. This happens when there is so much snow that schools and even offices and stores are closed. Some people enjoy spending a lot of time in their homes to make them nice places to live. This is called nesting or cocooning. Birds build nests out of sticks to hold their eggs and baby birds. Some insects build cocoons around themselves for protection while they grow and change. Nests and cocoons provide security for wildlife. So people like the idea of nests and cocoons, too.The terms cocooning and nesting became popular more than twenty years ago. They describe people buying their first homes and filling them with many things. These people then had children. Now these c hildren are grownup and have left the nest. They are in college. Or they are married and starting families of their own far away. Now these parents are living alone without c hildren in their empty nests. They have become empty nesters.16.Which of the following was first used?A.Couch potato. B.Cocooning.C.Mouse potato. D.Nesting.17.________refers to a person who spends much time on computer.A.A couch potato B.A nesterC.A mouse potato D.An empty nester18.Why can most people easily get cabin fever in winter?A.Because they are addicted to computer games.B.Because they would like to play outside.C.Becaus e it is so cold that they couldn't go outside.D.Because they are too busy at work or school.19.What's the passage mainly about?A.How to get rid of cabin fever.B.How people become neste rs or empty nesters.C.How to spend your leisure time.D.The origin of some words.BGerman researchers said older people tend to be portrayed negatively in society. Although they are often described as wise, they are also shown as being slow and forgetful.“Living in a youth centered culture, they may appreciate a boost in selfesteem. That's why they prefer the negative stories about younger people, who are seen as having a higher status in our society,” said Dr Silvia KnoblochWesterwick,of Ohio State University.KnoblochWesterwick and her coauthor Matthi as Hastall, of Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen, Germany, studied 276 German adults, including 178 aged 18 to 30 and 98 between 55 and 60. Their findings are published in the journal Communication. All the adults in the study were shown what they were led to believe was a test version of a new online news magazine. They were also given limited time to look over either a negative or a positive version of 10 preselected articles. Each story was also pa ired with a photograph depicting(描绘) someone of either the younger or the older age group. The researchers found that older people were more likely to choose to read negative articles about those younger than themselves. They also tended to show less interest in articles about older people, whether negative or positive. But younger people preferred to read positive articles about other young people.According to KnoblochWesterwick, older people's preference for negative news about their younger counterparts can be explained by their place in society.“Everybody likes a selfesteem boost. For young people, though, it's almost automatic. You th is considered important in society,” she said. After reading the articles, the participants completed a questionnaire designed to measure levels of selfesteem. Unlike their younger counterparts, the selfesteem of older people rose after they read a negative article about younger people.Althou gh the study was done in Germany, KnoblochWesterwick believes nationality and the national characteristics are not important.20.What do older people think of themselves, according to the text?A.They are behind the times.B.They are always forgetful.C.Their selfesteem is challenged in a youth centered culture.D.They should have a higher status than the young in society.21.What can be learned from the study?A.The old enjoy reading negative stories about the young.B.The old are interested in negative articles about other old people.C.The old are likely to read positive articles about other old people.D.The young like reading negative articles about other young people.22.According to KnoblochWesterwick, if a similar study were done in other countries, ________.A.the result would be unreasonableB.the result would be quite differentC.the findings would be completely the sameD.much the same result would be foundⅢ.书面表达是一个致力于消除家长和孩子之间沟通障碍的网站。

Unit 5 Canada-“The True North”李仕才【阅读理解插花】Science textbooks around the world have become suddenly out of date. Four new chemical elements(元素)have been added to the periodic table. A big decision now lies ahead—elements 113, 115, 117 and 118 need to be given their official names and symbols.New elements can be named after a mythical(神话的) concept, a mineral, a place or country, a property(特性) or a scientist. The names have to be unique and maintain “historical and chemical consistency”. This means a lot of “-iums”.“They’re Latinising the name, ” explains chemist Andrea Sella. “The most recent tradition is to name them after places or people. ” The places chosen tend to be where the element was discovered or first produced. No one has yet named an element after themselves but many elements are named in honour of important scientists. Albert Einstein was given einsteinium. This can also be a way of righting the wrongs of the past. “Lise Meitner was really the chemist who spotted nuclear fission(核裂变)but she was never really recognised for it because she was Jewish and a woman, ” says Sella. “Giving an element a name that reminds us of her is greatly important. ”The naming process isn’t quick. The scientists who discovered them will start things off by suggesting a name. But it will be down to the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) to approve it. A special division of the US-based group has to accept the suggestion. Then there is a public review period of five months before the IUPAC ge ts the final approval. Once it’s ready, the name is announced in the scientific journal Pure and Applied Chemistry.Naming an element is not just about functionality. Names are always important. 【文章大意】本文为一篇科普题材的说明文, 文章主要介绍了每当一个新元素被发现之时我们该如何对其进行命名, 该用什么对其进行命名。

B.4. C.5. D.6.BOne of our biggest fears nowadays is that our kids might some day get lost in a sea_of_technology rather than experiencing the natural world. Fear-producing TV and computer games are leading to a serious disconnect between kids and the great outdoors, which will change the wild places of the world, its creatures and human health for the worse, unless adults get working on child's play. Each of us has a place in nature we go to sometimes, even if it was torn down. We cannot be the last generation to have that place. At this rate, kids who miss the sense of wonder outdoors will not grow up to be protectors of natural landscapes. “If the decline in parks use continues across North America, who will defend parks against encroachment(蚕食)?” asks Richard Louv, author of Last Child in the Woods. Without having a nature experience, kids can turn out just fine, but they are missing out a huge enrichment of their lives. That applies to everything from their physical health and mental health, to stress levels, creativity and cognitive(认知的) skills. Experts predict modern kids will have poorer health than their parents—and they say a lack of outside play is surely part of it. Research suggests that kids do better academically in schools with a nature component and that play in nature fosters(培养) leadership by the smartest, not by the toughest. Even a tiny outdoor experience can create wonder in a child. The three-year-old turning over his first rock realizes he is not alone in the world. A clump of trees on the roadside can be the whole universe in his eyes. We really need to value that more.Kids are not to blame. They are over-protected and frightened. It is dangerous outthere from time to time, but repetitive stress from computers is replacing breaking an arm as a childhood rite(仪式) of passage.Everyone, from developers to schools and outdoors citizens, should help regain for our kids some of the freedom and joy of exploring, taking friendship in fields and woods that cement(增强) love, respect and need for landscape. As parents, we should devote some of our energies to taking our kids into nature. This could yet be our greatest cause.21.The main idea of Paragraph 2 is that ________.A.kids are missing the sense of wonder outdoorsB.parks are in danger of being gradually encroachedC.Richard Louv is the author of Last Child in the WoodsD.children are expected to develop into protectors of nature22.According to the passage, children without experiencing nature will ________.A.keep a high sense of wonderB.be over-protected by their parentsC.be less healthy both physically and mentallyD.change wild places and creatures for the better23.According to the author, children's breaking an arm is ________.A.the fault on the part of their parentsB.the natural experience in their growing upC.the result of their own carelessness in playD.the effect of their repetitive stress from computers24.What does “sea of technology” mean in the first paragraph?A.The technology of TV and computer games.B.The technology of food.C.The technology of sea food.D.The technology of catching animals in the sea.25.In writing this passage, the author mainly intends to ________.A.blame children for getting lost in computer gamesB.encourage children to protect parks from encroachmentC.show his concern about children's lack of experience in natureD.inspire children to keep the sense of wonder about things around课时作业(十五)Ⅰ.来自教师家庭的“我”,一直以来在学习上出类拔萃、遥遥领先,这让“我”引以为豪。

For example, someone who likes to spend a lot of time sitting or lying down while watching television is sometimes called a couch potato. A couch is a piece of furniture that people sit on while watching television.Robert Armstrong, an artist from California, devel oped the term “couch potato” in 1976. Several years later, he listed the term as a trademark with the United States government. Mr Armstrong also helped write a funny book about life as a fulltime television watcher. It is called the Official Couch Potato Handbook.Couch potatoes enjoy watching television just as mouse potatoes enjoy working on computers. Now these children are grownup and have left the nest. They are in college. Or they are married and starting families of their own far away. Now these parents are living alone without children in their empty nests.
