(2018·东北三省四市模拟)On April 14th, 2010, my entire life changed in an instant. One moment I was joyfully riding through the sunshine. The next moment, metal, flesh and bones were spreading against the pavement in a thunderous crash. Another cyclist, biking carelessly, had cut me off and sent me supermanning toward oncoming traffic. As if to symbolize the accident that had hit my life, another disaster also occurred on April 14th, 2010. It cost the airline industry $ 1.7 billion. Ten million travelers were stuck for days. Economics all over the world were disturbed. This was the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, one of Iceland’s many volcanoes. However, volcanoes are not all bad. In fact, they are necessary. They are responsible for the birth of new earth, and for the creation of rich soil. This eruption gave off 0.15 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere daily. But cancelling 48% of the world’s flight travel saved about 2.8 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, temporarily decreasing our carbon footprint. Similarly, the accident had badly affected my emotion but it also allowed me to look more closely inside myself and discover things about myself I would never have realized. I learned how not to judge myself for my new limitations. In 1973, another Icelandic volcano, Eldfell, broke out. Icelanders decided to bomb it with cold water until it froze and chose a different path. After their plan worked, they used the geothermal(地热的) energy for the next 15 years to heat their homes. A good example of life bringing lemons, and making lemonade! One must move on from misfortunes, focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future. I ran from April 14th, 2010, to every kind of escape. Eventually I ended up in university for a newfound love in Earth sciences. 【解题导语】 作者把自己遭遇突发事件和火山爆发这种自然灾害进行类比,说明遭遇到不幸也有好处,面对现实情况要乐观积极。 1.What happened to the writer on April 14th, 2010? She explained why “I never meant to hurt you” is never a sufficient apology, no matter who it comes from. “Picture that person coming up to you and saying, ‘I’m sorry I did this. 2.________ And can we just call it a day?’” Caroline says. As tempting as it can be to move on and bury the hatchet(和解), that type of apology won’t sit well with the person on the receiving end. “That whole little thing—‘I never meant to hurt you’—is the thing you can’t forgive,” she says. “That sick feeling goes right to your soul.” Instead, Caroline says it’s important to approach the conversation differently. Ⅰ阅读理解(2018·合肥高三质检)Cycling is well known to improve individual healthand fitness; it also benefits the wider population in terms of economy, transport and environment. The EU promotes cycling via many measures primarily to achieve sustainable(可持续的) clean and energyefficient transport systems. However, despite the fact that the benefits outweigh the risks by 20∶1, many consider the risks too great and that the fear of danger on the road needs to be handled. Cycle lanes(车道) have been used to improve cyclists’ safety and encourage more cyclists onto the ro ad. This research in transport aims to study the effect of cycle lanes on cyclists’ safety where passing space given by overtaking(超车) vehicles is concerned. In this study, the authors used a bicycle equipped with cameras to record vehicle overtaking in varying road situations to determine whether cycle lanes, color block cycle lanes or no cycle lanes affect passing distances and cyclists’ safety. Their 3 comparisons measuring vehicle passing widths found greater overall distances given with a cycle lane than without. Color block vs. uncolored cycle lanes showed little or no difference, as did no cycle lanes vs. color block cycle lanes. Color block lanes had a slight negative effect suggesting that drivers are more careful when cycle lanes have less definition(清晰度).Interestingly, the authors conclude that other factors have a far greater effect on cyclists’safety than presence or absence of cycle lanes. Road width, parking, opposite vehicle flow and speed were key influences on decreased passing widths. The authors also note that driver behaviour is a hugely important factor and urge more research in this area. “In order to reduce risks and encourage more cycling, reduci ng and calming the existing motorised traffic must be explored first.” They suggest, “Lane width is the most significant variable(变量) to achieve a sufficient vehicle passing distance. The narrow cycle lanes (<2m) may be not enough. Reconsideration of the entire road design and further exploration of driver behavioural factors are required.”【解题导语】本文主要讲述了为了实现可持续的清洁和节能的交通系统,欧盟大力推广使用自行车,并指出在自行车的推广过程中要解决安全的问题。

Ⅰ阅读理解(2018〃郑州一中高三入学测试)Enjoying a musical performance no longer requires a costly ticket or a trip to a theater. These days, musicians are performing in private homes,at haircutting shops,at airports...even on ferry boats.Musicians like house concerts. At music clubs, they often have to perform over loud conversation or deal with people who have had too much alcohol.People at house concerts are more focused on listening to the music.Just a few hours before the Bombadils started singing at the O’Hair Salon,Lindsay was cutting hair and Tamera was doing facials. Then, they moved chairs and microphones to create a small performance space. The Bombadils made music in the front part of the hair salon, near the hairdryers and makeup tables.‚This is our first show at a hair salon,‛Sarah Frank of the Bombadils told concertgoers at last week’s performance.Frank said she and band members,Luke Fraser and Kaitlyn Raitz had a great time ‚interacting‛with the audience.Concerts in people’s homes,or small businesses such as O’Hair’s,are becoming more popular, musicians say.‚There is a more relaxed atmosphere,‛said Domenic Cicala,a musician who opened up his O’Hair Salon to concerts.‚People really get to know the artists.‛At house concerts, people get time before and after concerts to meet the performers.Often, the hosts or guests will provide food and drink.‚People really like listening to music in the living room of a friend,‛said Matt Hart, with Aubrey Zoli making up the Local Strangers,a folkrock group based in Seattle. At many such concerts, the musicians do not need microphones.Yet,every word of their songs can be heard.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了现代音乐会在举办场地的选择上更加多样化,私人居所、理发店、机场等都成为音乐家表演的场所,并且备受青睐。

Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·太原模拟)Opera is an art form that celebrates the human voice. No other art form creates excitement and moves the heart in the way that opera does, especially when performed by a great singer. Opera is an important part of the Western classical music tradition. It uses music, words, and actions to bring a dramatic story to life. Opera started in Italy at the end of the 16th century and later became popular throughout Europe. Over the years, it has responded to various musicals. In recent decades, much wider audiences have been introduced to opera through modern recording technology. Some singers have become celebrities thanks to performing on radio, on TV, and in the cinema. However, in recent years, opera has been facing serious challenges. One current challenge to opera is economics. The shortage of money raises the broader question of how much should be paid to support opera singers and other artists. Society seems to accept the large salaries paid to business managers and the multi-million-dollar contracts given to sports athletes. But what about opera singers? Somehow, people have the idea that artists can be creative only if they suffer in poverty, but this is unrealistic. If artists, including opera singers, lack the support they need, valuable talent is wasted. Not only the shortage of money, but also the way money is managed in the opera world has led to hardships. Principal singers are generally paid performance fees once they complete a show. They typically receive nothing during the many weeks of rehearsal(排练) before a show starts.Another problem faced by opera is how to meet the demands of audiences who are influenced by popular entertainment. Pop singers are often judged as much on the basis of how they look as how they sound. These demands may be unrealistic and possibly harmful. Opera singers simply cannot make a sound big enough to fill a large theater or concert hall without a microphone if their body weight is too low. Emphasizing physical appearance over singing ability may cause audiences to miss out on the human voice at its best. There are no easy solutions to opera’s problems and there are many different opinions about the value of opera. However, every year many young people register for music courses with hopes and dreams of developing their talent in this special art form. The fact that opera has survived many obstacles and continues to attract the rising generation shows that it remains a respectable art form full of value.【解题导语】本文主要讨论了歌剧所面临的挑战和困难。

Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·惠州高三调研考试)Following the crowd may not always be ina person’s best interest. But new research suggests that teens who get alongwith their friends may end up healthier as adults.Scientists have known that close friendships help boost health. That’strue for both teens and adults. The finding inspired Joseph Allen, a psychologist at the University of Virginia, and his team to study whether experiences during teen years would influence adult health. So they followed 171 teens, starting when the kids were just 13. They interviewed each one every year for five years, and also spoke to these teens’ closest friends, who provided additional information about the quality of their friendships. The same 171 people were interviewed again at ages 25, 26 and 27. This time, the questions surveyed each person’s overall health. When the researchers analyzed the data, they found a strong connection between a teen’s behavior and adult health. Teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults. Whether teens held back their feelings or expressed them to close friends also influenced later health. Those who held back their feelings were more likely to be sick as adults. The connection held up even after the scientists accounted for other possible influences on health.Weight, family income and drug use were all examined. So were mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. And in these people, such other factors did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did.Getting along with the crowd may have benefits, says Allen, but there are also drawbacks. Teens who are more independent tend to do better at school and work. And peer pressure may lead some kids to engage in risky behavior, such as smoking, drinking or using drugs. In summer, people with dark brown eyes and darker skin turn sunlight from just 15 minutes outside without sunscreen into adequate amounts of Vitamin D.Even during winter, just a 10minute walk at midday can keep the body’s Vitamin D at healthy levels.During brief winter walks,we receive the greatest benefits when we wear no sunscreen and expose as much skin to the sun as possible.Vitamin D can be also obtained from foods.Salmon is one of the best sources of the Vitamin.Egg yolks(蛋黄),cheese, mushrooms and some animal organs contain smaller quantities of it.To attract consumers, food companies add Vitamin D to some of their milk products. The practice of putting the Vitamin into milk began in the 1930s.At that time, many children were suffering from rickets,an illness that is caused by a deficiency(缺乏)of Vitamin D、It made the children’s bones soft and weak.Adding Vitamin D to milk helped to solve the problem, and it has been available ever since. For people who still need more Vitamin D, there is another option;Take Vitamin D supplements(补充物)、These products are widely sold in stores. However, anyone considering taking supplements should consult a physician first.【解题导语】本文是一篇科普文,主要介绍了维生素D的一些情况.5、During the winter months,people________、A、aren’t able to meet their deadlinesB、often don’t dress warmly enoughC、generally like to remain indoorsD、leave lots of work for others to doC解析:细节理解题.根据第一段中的“In the dead of winter,we don’t typically think about spending time outdoors, but according to many physicians we should.”可知,在冬天人们愿意待在室内.6、According to the text,Vitamin D________、A、can be obtained by being exposed to the sunB、can be used to cure lifethreatening diseasesC、can be mainly found in some milk productsD、can make the children’s bones soft and weakA解析:细节理解题.根据第一段第二句以及第三段第一句可知,维生素D可以通过晒太阳获得,故选A.7、Why is salmon mentioned in this article?A、It’s seldom prepared in the correct way.B、It’s a useful addition to a person’s diet.C、It has a huge impact on the environment.D、Its advantages have been exaggerated.B解析:推理判断题.根据第四段可知,三文鱼是补充维生素D的食物,因此对我们的饮食是有用的补充物,故选B.8、The main purpose of this article is ________、A、to introduce a valuable nutrientB、to advertise Vitamin D supplementsC、to note risks associated with a nutrientD、to explain how a nutrient was discoveredA解析:写作意图题.根据全文可知,本文主要介绍一种营养成分——维生素D.Ⅱ完形填空(2018·昆明高三复习适应性检测)I started serving the homeless when I was eight years old.I didn’t know these people would make such a big difference in my __1__、Twice a month I go to the church and help get things ready for __2__. Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·成都诊断)What are your retirement plans? Keep working?Get more exercise? Or learn something new? You mayput__them__on__hold. There’s a chance that, sooner or later, youmight have to move further than you were thinking, as far as Mars(火星).On Thursday, National Geographic will show the first ever Mars show home, giving earthlings an idea of what their life could look like on the Red Planet. Set in the notsodistant year of 2037, the iglooshaped structure could be the home of your future. It shows a house built using recycled spacecraft parts and Martian soil, called regolith, which has been microwaved into bricks. Some parts of the home are recognisable—kitchen, bedroom—but there are fundamental differences that are vital for human survival. As the Martian atmosphere is around one hundredth as thick as the Eart h’s, people will need permanent shelter from the sun and society will move largely indoors. Most buildings will be connected by underground passages and the houses won’t have windows. The homes will have simulated solar lighting, or natural light that has been bent several times.Walls will need to be 10 to 12 feet thick, to protect people from dangerous rays that can pass through six feet of steel, and a double airlocked entrance to keep the home under proper pressure.“We don’t think of our houses as things that keep us alive, but on Mars your house will be a survival centre,”says Stephen Petranek, author of Ho w We’ll Li v e on Mars. This is not just the stuff of scifi. “Ten to twenty years from now there will certainly be people on Mars,”Petranek says.“We’ve had the technology for 30 years to land people on Mars, but we haven’t had the will,”Petranek says. “But two main factors have completely swung public attitudes.”The private companies’participation has forced government agencies to up their game, and influential films such as Gra v ity and The Martian have caught society’s eye.【解题导语】本文主要对人类未来在火星上居住作了相关介绍。

Ⅰ阅读理解AMy doorbell rings at 11 a.m. On the step, I find an elderly Chinese lady. She is small and slight. She holds a paper carrier bag in her hands.I know this lady. It is by no means her first visit. Her daughter, Nicole, bought the house next door last October.Nicole, who is currently in Shanghai, has apparently told her mother that I am having heart surgery shortly, and the result is that her mother has decided I need to be supplied with meals.I know what is inside the paper carrier bag—a stainless steel container with a meal of rice, vegetables and either chicken, meat or shrimp. This has become an almostdaily occurrence.Communication between my benefactor(恩人) and me is somewhat handicapped by the fact that she doesn’t speak English and all I can say in Mandarin is “hello”. Once, she brought an iPad and pointed to the screen, which displayed a message from Nicole telling me that her mother wanted to know if the food was all right.“Your mother just can’t be bringing me meals like this all the time,” I protested. “I can hardly reciprocate by cooking something from my native land, like roast beef or Yorkshire pudding for her,”I said.“Oh, no,” Nicole said. “Don’t worry about that. She has to cook for the family anyway, and she wants to do it for you. You can call her Wing, which is her surname.”The tenant in my basement suite is a university student who speaks Mandarin quite well, so with her help, I have found out that Wing is 68—13 years younger than I am. Ⅰ阅读理解(2018·长沙模拟)KBG84 is a oneofakind girl band in Japan consisting of 33 singing and dancing grannies, with an average age of 84. The oldest member, Haru Yamashiro, is 97 years old!The new hand, based in the remote island of Kohama in Okinawa,is a huge hit in the country —so much so that the members are rather shocked by their success. Their first single—titled Come on and Dance, Kohama Island—has made it to the top of the charts, and they’ve just completed a sellout tour of Japan.“We fell like stars in Tokyo,”added 86yearold Hideko Kedamori. “Everyone in the audience had a big smile, which gave us the energy to sing our hearts out. We’re blessed to have been born in Kohama. Our lyrics are about the island and nature—whales in the sea spouting or dolphins doing somersaults(空翻).”Regardless of the lyrics, these elderly women are incredibly charming when they perform. Their energy and enthusiasm are amazing, considering their age. In fact, no one under the age of 80 is allowed into the band.It turns out that the pop queens are blessed with incredible genes—Okinawan islanders have one of the highest life expectancies in the world. Their diet chiefly consists of vegetables and local purplefleshed sweet potatoes, with practically no added sugar. Menaka said she isn’t particular about her diet.“I look after my health by cleaning my home, wiping the floors, steaming rice,” she said. “I stay in the shade when it’s too hot. I don’t want to get burnt. I have to take care of my skin—I’m still young at heart!”【解题导语】本文主要讲述了日本一个由33位平均年龄为84岁的奶奶组成的乐队大获成功的故事。

However, if the exhausted runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off.Shades of that spirit spread over today’s conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked light-heartedly out of the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, “Oh boy, a bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it’s going to rain.”I wanted to strike him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, but for his smile.Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Greyhound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile, “Oh, that bus left five minutes ago.”Dreams of headcutting! It’s not the news that makes someone angry. It’s the unsympathetic attitude with which it’s delivered(传递). Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and big winners do it with the proper attitude. A doctor advising his patient that she needs an operation does it in a caring way. A boss informing an employee he fails to get the job takes on a sympathetic tone. Big winners know, when delivering any bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver.Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this. When you’re tired from a long flight, has a hotel clerk cheerfully said that your room isn’t ready yet? When you had your heart set on the toasted beef, has your waiter merrily told you that he just served the last piece? It makes you as a traveler or diner want to land your fist right on their unsympathetic faces.Had my neighbor told me of the upcoming rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his warning. Had the Greyhound salesclerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left, I probably would have said, “Oh,that’s all right. I’ll catch the next one.”Big winners, when they bear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the bombarded(被轰炸的) person is sure to have.【解题导语】本文主要讲述当我们要告诉别人不好的消息的时候,要注意说话的方式和语气,还要带有同情心.4.From “Dreams of headcutting!”(Paragraph 3), we learn that the writer________.A.was reminded of the cruel pharaohB.was mad at the sales agentC.wished that the sales agent would have bad dreamsD.dreamed of cutting the sales agent’s head that nightB解析:推理判断题.根据第三段的描述可知,“我”对售票员的态度很恼火.5.Which of the following is true?A.The author really appreciated the neighbor’s warning.B.From the passage we know that it is the bad news that makes someone angry.C.If the runner brought to the pharaoh unhappy news, he would be treated like a prince.D.When we want to deliver any bad news, we should share the feeling of the receiver.D解析:推理判断题.根据第四段中的“Big winners know, when delivering any bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver.”可知,当告诉别人不好的消息的时候,应该带有同情心,应该分担消息接收者不好的感觉.6.What is the main idea of the text?A.Receiving bad news requires great courage.B.Helping others sincerely is the key to business success.C.Delivering bad news with sympathy is important in communication.D.Learning ancient traditions can be useful.C解析:主旨大意题.本文主要告诉我们当我们告诉别人不好的消息的时候,要注意讲话的方式和态度,应该带有同情心,分担别人的忧愁.7.In the writer’s opinion, his neighbor was________.A.not helpfulB.not considerateC.friendlyD.warmheartedB解析:推理判断题.根据最后一段中的“Had my neighbor told me of the upcoming rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his warning.”可知,“我”认为邻居没有同情心,不能为别人考虑.故选B项.Ⅱ完形填空(2018·湖北部分重点中学高三起点考试)From childhood,Moira loved to write.
