People have become more health conscious and try to take better care of their bodies by eating more healthily and exercising more regularly to lose any unnecessary fat that they may have. Not only are people being more careful about what they eat, they are also concerned(关心) with how they eat and how their meals are prepared. People are taking more time for each meal. Many avoid the so-called "plastic" fast-food hamburgers and choose to eat a salad or a sandwich of more healthful ingredients in a quiet restaurant with a more comfortable atmosphere. At home, they also try to take enough time to eat a relaxed dinner without phone or TV interruptions. While dieting may be viewed as beneficial, it has also become a serious problem for Americans, particularly for young women. Dieting for them has actually become a psychological(心理的) addiction. They eat so little that they can lose as much as fifty percent of their total body weight, and although they look like skeletons, they still insist that they are fat.The current wave of exercising, dieting and the problems produced have caused many organizations to begin educating the public. Many schools, hospitals, health organizations, newspapers and magazines, for example, are offering classes, printing articles and so on to inform the public of the way to exercise and diet of the dangers of dieting too rapidly, and of the places people can go for medical help if they find themselves on the road to "diet addiction".8. These days people are dieting more because ______.A. they are getting fatter and fatterB. they realize the danger of junk foodC. they grow aware of healthD. they eat more healthily9. Which way of eating is strongly advised in the passage?A. Enjoying food with phones on.B. Finishing dinner in a short time.C. Avoiding a salad or a sandwich.D. Eating in a relaxed atmosphere.10. If you are getting into "diet addiction", what should you do?A. See a doctor.B. Keep dieting.C. Take exercise.D. Attend classes.11. What is the last paragraph mainly about?A. What organizations are offering medical service.B. Where people with dieting addiction can go for help.C. How people are helped to solve dieting problems.D. What causes the organizations to educate the publicDThere is always something that happens in the world that everyone fears will happen to their town, city or country:natural disasters. The scariest part of it is that no one will ever see it coming.Though technology helps us prepare, but it never actually tells the people when it's going to hit.It is always estimated but the result is never 100% accurate. However, that is not the point of this article. Two different natural disasters in two different parts of the world have happened in the past few weeks. One was a major flood that has hit Louisiana in the United States. The other was an earthquake that hit Amatrice,Italy. However, there is a major difference in the news coverage of the two tragedies. As for the flooding in Louisiana,it is reported that this disaster is the worst to hit the United States since Super-storm Sandy and it'll cost at least $30 million. In only the first couple of weeks,13 people had died. However, like me,many people did not hear about this tragic event.I did not learn about it until about three weeks after it happened. In Italy, however,it covered all media instantly. The earthquake in Italy happened on Tuesday morning. That same day,I was on Twitter and that was all that was over the news feed.Every other post was about the earthquake. Some would have the opinion that Amatrice,Italy was one of the most beautiful towns in that country.I got in deep sorrow because there were more people killed in this quake than the flooding. So far, they have a total of 73 dead and over one hundred missing.I understand that technically the earthquake in Italy was worse than the floods in Louisiana. However,I believe that if a natural disaster happens, they all should beequally covered and taken equally seriously. We are one world united and should be there for all of the people who are in need of help.We may not be able to accurately predict disasters but,we can surely lend a hand out for the needy.12. What really concerns the author about the two natural disasters?______A. The death and the injured.B. The media report.C. The government's responsibility.D. Their economic loss.13. Why did the author learn about the flood so late______A. He didn't care about the flood.B. He felt nervous about the news.C. The media didn't cover it in time.D. The flood frightened the author a lot.14. What can be inferred from the passage______A. Italy isn't good at predicting the natural disasters.B. All natural disasters should be covered equally.C. The world should be united into one instantly.D. America should help Italy predict natural disasters.15. How is the text mainly developed?______A. By making a comparison.B. By following the time order.C. By listing some examples.D. By analyzing the causes.Reasons to Consider Learning a Second LanguageIn our current society, having the ability to understand a second language is becoming increasingly valuable.(1) .So take a look at why this is such a valuableskill to have. You will be more competitive in the job market.Businesses are always looking for people who are bilingual to be translators and to communicate with non-English speaker.Bilingual employees get paid 5%-20% more than people who only speak one language.(2)You can get credit for it during college. If you study another language at a university, you will get credit (学分)toward graduating. You can start from the very beginning and learn a brand-new language or continue on from what you were studying in high school.Be aware, however, thatcollege classes can move quickly and are considered to be difficult at times.(3) You can study abroad in a wider range of countries.Studying abroad is an amazing experience that everyone should take advantage of.About 79% of Americans believe that students should seize the opportunity to spend a semester in another country.(4) Learning another language can help expand the number of countries you can choose from.Learning a language is a big commitment and is not easy by any means. If you don't have the time to learn a language in school, there are still many, way to become proficient in another language. One program to look into is Livemocha which is a free online program where you can learn a foreign language.(5) There are many other countries and written resources to consider as well.A.This is only one suggestion.B.So only take what you can handle.C.Many people learn a language in order to get high marks.D.There are a wide range of countries that you can choose from.E.You can even go for a major in a language if you get far enough along.F.Being able to communicate in more than one language can open countless doors.G.Having knowledge of a second language can make you stand out in the jobmarket.16. AI’ve been having trouble concentrating on one thing. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.In my first literature class, Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write on it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it. ” She glanced down at me through her glasses, “You are not different from your classmates, young man.”I tried, but I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots(点), which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.Wasn’t I the “blind” in my class, being made to learn like the“ sighted” students? My thoughts spilled out and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was not different from others; I just needed a quieter place. If Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up?I didn’t expect anything w hen I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day —with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: “See what you can do when you keep trying?”Inspired and touched, I began to keep trying hard in my study and struggled against attention problems. I believe one can find his way out of difficulty with determination(决心)and efforts.1. Why didn’t the author finish his reading in class?A. He missed several classes before.B. He was not a bit interested in literature.C. He was unable to concentrate on his task.D. He was used to doing his homework at home.2. What kind of teacher is Mrs. Smith according to the text?A. Impatient.B. Encouraging.C. Disappointing.D. Careless.3. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. You can never be too old to learn.B. Do not judge a book by its cover.C. One good turn deserves another.D. Where there is a will, there is a way.BSitting close with your little ones from an early age and enjoying a book together is always a great way to spend time, but do you know reading to your children has a whole range of benefits that will give them a flying start in life?Firstly, it’s a great introduction to vocabulary. Seeing an adult soun ding out the words and linking them to the shapes on the page begins to build up vocabulary that they will use for the rest of their life. Then there are a variety of good effects of hearing stories which improve their minds and develop social awareness and skills. At a time when they are perhaps stuck indoors more than ever before, reading is the best way to motivate(激发)children’s imagination. They can travel to the moon, meet the Gruffalo and pop in to a chocolate factory all before they’ve even had lunc h!There’s no better way to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes than reading their stories and seeing things from another’s point of view is a great way to build empathy(共鸣), tolerance and other qualities needed. There are some fantastic children’s books which show characters acting as strong role models. These stories can encourage future leaders and thinkers, so every child can feel they can achieve their dreams, from the Little Leaders series to Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls(叛逆女孩).Now is the perfect time to build up a library of excellent reads ready for children to enjoy now and in the future. They will create memories to last a lifetime. On top of the benefits for your little ones, it’s fun, relaxing and a great chance to go back and reread the best booksfrom your own childhood.4. What kind of people is the text written for?A. Parents.B. Children.C. Teachers.D. Leaders.5. What does the underlined phrase “pop in to” in paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Start.B. Visit.C. Build.D. Leave.6. In which way does Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls do good to children?A. Going to bed easily at bedtime.B. Building good qualities.C. Building a strong body.D. Bringing back sweet memories.7. What is the text mainly about?A. Children’s reading habits.B. Children’s reading materials.C. Benefits of reading to children.D. Ways of reading children’s books.CBegun 30 years ago, the Kubuqi desert greening project has succeeded in not only controlling the fast growth of the seventh-largest desert in China, about the size of Kuwait, but also turning about 6, 000 square kilometers of the desert — one-third of it — green. The desert lies about 800 kilometers to the west of Beijing in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region(自治区)and the greening efforts have also controlled desertification(沙漠化)in the rest of the area. The project, which began about 30 years ago, can be looked to as an example of efforts to advance green development, in order to create harmony between humans and nature, and leave a better environment for future generations. The success of the project, which has been praised by the UN Environment Programme as an “eco-pioneer”, sets an example for successful desertification control and ecosystem improvement based on effective government policies, supported by investment(投资)in the eco industry and combined with the efforts of local farmers. These three aspects are key to the success of the “Kubuqi model”.Elion, a private ecology(生态)and investment company, has invested about 38 billion yuan ($5. 82 billion)in the Kubuqi desert-greening project since 1988 helping to lift about 102, 000 local farmers out of poverty. For example, the locals grow a drought-tolerant(耐旱)plant, Chinese licorice, which is the most used herb in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant helps enrich the desert soil, with the bacteria around the roots of the plants producing nitrogen(氮气). Besides, Cistanche, another type of drought-tolerant herb, was introduced after the successful planting of licoric e. Under the company’s guidance and with the local government’s support, the local people benefit from the “environmental wealth”.More companies should be encouraged to apply the “Kubuqi model” in other desert control projects in Inner Mongolia and neighboring Gansu province, where the climate conditions are similar but not quite the same, so as to further gain experience and enrich the model in practice. In Ethiopia’s Somali area, people have seen the failures of what should have been three straight rainy seasons. Droughts do come and go over the years. However, the lack of rainfall has led to the driest conditions in 40 years in parts of Somalia and Ethiopia.UNICEF is the United Nation’s children’s agency. Local Zaynab Wali told a visiting team with UNICEF that she and her seven children had never seen a drought like this. She said the government gav e out food for animals during the last drought five years ago. “This time, we even don’t have enough food for our family.”Children walk among the bodies of dead animals, which died from lack of food and energy. Somalia Consortium works to improve international aid for Somalia. It said in a separate statement that in Somalia, more than 7 million people need emergency help. It is asking international organizations to give much more to the country.“We are just one month into the long dry season, and I have already lost 25 goats and sheep,” Hafsa Bedel in Ethiopia’s Somali area told UNICEF. She also lost four camels, a large desert animal, as well. She said there was nowhere for her animals to eat. She added that there was not enough food for her own family, including her six children.UNICEF thinks that more than 150,000 children in such areas of Ethiopia have dropped out of school. They are needed to help find the limited amount of water and help their families with other work. One young boy was seen supporting an animal, a donkey. The donkey was once important for carrying goods. But now, it had become too weak to walk on its own.8.Why did Zaynab Wali mention the last drought?A.To show the need to protect animals. In Ubang Nigeria, it really happens. It’s not exactly clear what percentage of the words in the men’s and women’s languages are different, but there are enough examples to make sentences sound different when spoken by the opposite sex. For “clothing”, men use the word “nki”, while women say “ariga”; “kitchi” means tree for men, while women say “okweng”. The se are not just some slight pronunciation differences, but totally different words. “It’s almost like two different lexicons (词汇集),” a language expert, Chi Chi Undle said. “There are a lot of words that men and women share in common, but there are others which are totally different depending on your sex. They don’t sound alike, and don’t have the same letters. They are completely different words.”Interestingly, both men and women are able to understand each other perfectly in Ubang, as both boys and girls grow up around their parents and get to learn both languages, but by the age of 10, boys are expected to speak in the male tongue. It seems that there is a stage the male will reach and he discovers he is not using the rightful language. When he starts spe aking the men’s language, you know the maturity is coming into him.No one really knows how or why the double-language tradition of Ubang began. Chi Chi Undie believes the two languages are the result of a “double-sex culture” where men and women operate in two separate spheres (范围) and live in separate worlds that rarely come together. However, she admits this is a weak theory, as the double-sex culture is present in many parts of Africa, where there are no different languages for men and women.Today, wit h English words constantly entering the lexicon of young Nigerians, Ubang’s two languages are in danger of being lost forever. Worse still, neither the male nor female language is written down, so they both rely on young people passing them down to the next generation. 12.What do we know about languages in Ubang?A.Word differences account for a high percentage.B.Men and women speak totally different languages.C.Word differences partly exist between the opposite sex.D.Men and women pronounce differently on the same word.13.What does the underlined word “maturity” in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A.Graduation. B.Adventure. C.Responsibility. D.Adulthood.14.What does Chi Chi Undie want to explore in Paragraph 3?A.The change of double-sex culture. B.The theory of doube-sex culture.C.The origin of double-language tradition. D.The sphere of double-language tradition. 15.How does the author feel about the disappearing languages in Ubang?A.Frightened. B.Concerned. C.Confused. D.Stressed.第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

One hour.CLastPass Password strength has been a topic about the Internet lately. I have seen lots of clever methods for creating and remembering strong passwords. Some are better than others, but in my opinion, none are enough. Here’s the problem: It doesn’t matter how strong your passwords are if you use the same one on multiple sites. All it takes is for a site to get hacked, like Gawker media, or even Sony did, and now your super-strong password has been stolen, and every site on which you used that password has been accessed.Enter LastPass. It’s not the only password manager out there, but I like it the best. You create ONE strong password that you have to memorize and use it to access you LastPass database. The LastPass database is stored online, on LastPass’s services. LastPass recognizes the site you’re on and automatically logs you in (after, optionally, asking you to re-enter your master password). LastPass also has automatic form fill and automatic password generation. This means that you can have a different, unique, very strong password for every site you log into, but you only have to remember one master password. It’s the best of both worlds. One argument against LastPass is that if their database is attacked, then all of your sites are in danger, and that’s true, but if their entire line of work is keeping that information safe, I’m willing to take that chance. The alternative is rolling dice(掷骰子) or picking phrases to create passwords, writing all of them down on a piece of paper or something, and then having to manually type them in when I go to a site. A terrible mess. There is a free version of LastPass, with some additional features unlocked if you pay a $12 a year subscription.28. The writer thinks using the same password everywhere is ____.A. convenientB. dangerousC. appropriateD. enough29. When using LastPass, users have to remember____.A. the master password onlyB. the last passwordC. unique password each timeD. all passwords used30. .Some people are against LastPass because ____.A. they have better ways to create passwordB. they think rolling dice is more convenientC. Gawker median and LastPass were hacked onceD. they have no faith in LastPass database’s safety31. Joshua Bardwell writes the passage to _____.A. Share his experienceB. teach how to use a new productC. introduce a product of good qualityD. advertise his productDMany people believe that you lose the ability to learn new languages as you get older. Language experts, however, will tell you that you’re never too old to learn a new language. As you get older, it can be more difficult to learn a new language, though.Children and adults learn new languages in different ways. For children, language is their life. They study for thousands of hours every year, because they need to learn languages to become part of their communities. Adults, on the other hand, are already part of a language community. Learning a new language means becoming part of another language community, and adults rarely get the chance to practice as much as young children do.Moreover, children learning a new language are expected to make mistakes. This gives them freedom when learning to be daring and confident. Adults, however, often feel pressured to be perfect when learning a new language. This can discourage many people and make it even harder to learn a new language. When young children learn a new language, they come to see various languages as a “normal” part of society. This mindset(思维模式) helps them embrace learning a new language without feeling like they’re doing something unusual or “too hard”.So if you want to learn a new language, go for it! It’s never too late to learn a new language. If you’re older, it may take more work, but it can be done. If you’re a young child, though, now is the time to step out and learn a new language! 32.By “language is their life”, the author means that children .A.can’ t live without language B.lead a happy life every day C.practice a new language a lot D.are taken good care of adults 33.What may make it hard for the old people to learn to a new language?A.They are afraid of being laughed at B.They usually have too manyinterestsC.They think making mistakes is natural D.They always make all kinds of mistakes34.Which of the following shows the difference between children and adults in learninga new language?A.The behaviors they have B.The learning attitudesC.The future plans they have made D.The materials they are using 35.According to the author, a new language .A.can never be learned by the old people B.can be grasped by the old people easilyC.can be understood only by the old people D.can be learned by both theold and the young第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容从选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
