The kids greet our parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles by saying "Kung Hei Fat Choy" which means "Wishing you prosperity" in Cantonese. In return, we get more red envelopes! After that, we might visit friends and other relatives to pass on good wishes.The festivities go on for about two weeks. We can't do any chores or unhappy things because it's considered bad luck. So there's no homework or cleaning allowed! Other traditions we follow are eating nian gao (a sticky rice cake) because the words sound like "getting higher year after year", hanging up pictures of Door Gods to guard the home, and leaving out offerings of fruit to honor our ancestors.There are a lot of fun activities and games during this time too. My favorite is watching or performing the traditional lion dances. It takes a lot of skill for the dancers to coordinate and make the lion costumes look so alive! I think the acrobats doingstunts while jumping through giant rings of knives is pretty awesome as well.Another thing I really enjoy is getting together with my cousins and siblings to play games and set off more firecrackers and sparklers. We also receive allowances from our grandparents and other older relatives, which is spent on toys, candy, video games or whatever we want. It's like an extra birthday but way better!After the 15th day and night of celebrations, it's the Lantern Festival which signals the end of Chinese New Year. We go out and look at the beautiful lanterns strung up everywhere while eating tang yuan (sweet rice balls in hot soup). Kids are allowed to carry small lanterns around and some places even have dragon dances. It's always a little sad to see the holiday end but at the same time I'm looking forward to doing it all again next year!Chinese New Year is jam packed with rituals, symbolism, fun activities, lots of good food, quality family time, and awesome gifts.
