I really enjoy learning about the English language and reading stories and books written in English. This year in 8th grade, we are using a new English textbook published by ForeignLanguage Teaching and Research Press. It's a pretty thick book with a lot of content, but I've found it to be really interesting and helpful for improving my English skills.The textbook has 8 total units that we'll cover over the course of the school year. Each unit has 4 smaller sections labeled A, B, C, and D. The units cover a diverse range of topics like environmental protection, cultural traditions, scientific discoveries, and more. I like how there is a good variety instead of just focusing on one theme throughout the entire book.Within each section, there are reading passages, vocabulary lists, grammar explanations and exercises, writing prompts, and listening practice activities. The readings are probably my favorite part. They come from all sorts of different sources like stories, articles, fables, and poems. Some are just for fun and entertainment, while others teach about scientific concepts or historical events. The authors did a good job picking engaging passages that really make you think.The vocabulary sections are also really helpful. At the start of each unit, there is a list of around 20-25 new vocabulary words that will be covered in that unit's readings and activities. The list provides the definition, sample sentence, and part of speech for each new word. As we go through the unit, the new words arehighlighted in the reading passages to help reinforce them. There are also vocabulary exercises to complete where you match the words to their meaning, fill in the blanks, or make your own sentences using the new terminology. Building up my English vocabulary is one of my biggest goals, so I appreciate how much emphasis the textbook puts on learning new words.The grammar instruction is decent as well, although I've found some of the concepts to be quite complex and difficult to fully understand. Each section has a few pages that explain a new grammar topic through examples and rules. For instance, in one recent section the grammar lesson was about using different verb tenses like present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect correctly. That was really tricky for me to grasp at first. Thankfully, there are lots of practice exercises and activities for each grammar point that allow you to apply what you've learned. My teacher is good about going through the exercises together as a class when we get stuck too.In terms of writing, we have to complete a variety of different writing assignments and prompts that relate to the themes and topics covered in each unit's readings. For example, one writing task I remember was to write a short story using vocabulary words we had learned about environmentalprotection. Another assignment was to write a poem expressing our thoughts and feelings about an important cultural tradition. The writing prompts encourage using the language skills and vocabulary we've been learning in a creative way. My teacher provides feedback on our writing drafts as well to help us improve.The listening exercises are also pretty valuable. Most sections have a few short audio clips, conversations, or videos that we have to listen to and then answer comprehension questions about what we heard. It's great practice for training your ear to understand spoken English at a natural speed. Sometimes the audio has a British accent while other times it's an American accent, which helps get exposure to different ways of pronouncing English words.Overall, I think our 8th grade English textbook iswell-designed and has been instrumental in taking my English abilities to the next level this year.
