But did you know that there's a small frog in the Pacific Northwest that belly flops It's called a tailed frog.Dr. Rick Eisner, who has been studying tailed frogs for the past few years, says, "I've looked at thousands of jumps and have never seen them land on their feet like other frogs." Most of the time, tailed frogs land on their stomachs and then bring their back legs in to prepare for another jump.Eisner first noticed these frogs because of the way they swim. Other frogs kick both of their back legs at the same time. But when a tailed frog swims, it pushes first with one leg and then the other. To try to find out why tailed frogs bellyflop, Eisner and other scientists collected and filmed different kinds of frogs. They found that all of the frogs start their jumps the same way: They hold out their legs. The change comes in the landing. Tailed frogs can't move their back legs as quickly as other frogs do. Maybe they don't need to. Tailed frogs live around water and quickly jump into the water to escape danger.Early frogs developed around watery areas and could jump quickly into the water to escape danger. Scientists think those frogs blended in with (与…融合在一起) the green plants on the side of the rocky rivers, just like today's tailed frogs. "I would guess that other animals would have problems detecting them," explains Eisner. When other animals find those early frogs, the frogs could jump into the river. They didn't need to continue hopping.Tailed frogs and other kinds of frogs went their own ways about 200 million years ago. Tailed frogs stayed by rivers. Other kinds of frogs moved to places where new hopping skills allowed them to survive.(1)What's special about the detailed frog?A. It has a long tail.B. It jumps on one foot.C. It stars its jump differently.D. It lands differently from other frogs.(2)Why do tailed frogs bellyflop?A. They have never left the water to live.B. They have trouble in holding out their legsC. Their back legs can't catch up while jumping.D. Their front legs develop better than the back ones.(3)The underlined word "detecting" in Paragraph 5 means "________".A. eatingB. killingC. usingD. discovering(4)When they are in danger, the detailed frogs would ________.A. jump into the water for protectionB. hop around quicklyC. hide in the green plants near the riverD. jump into the rockBWhen seven-year-old Sky Nockels learned that black rhinoceroses (犀牛) were an endangered species, he decided to do something to help them. He raised money to adopt (收养) a black rhino named Imara at the Great Plains Zoo in South Dakota. By adopting Imara, Sky helps the zoo take care of the rhino's needs, such as food and a good habitat.Sky has been a summer camp member at the Great Plains Zoo since he was three. There he and other kids learnt about the animals and did projects for them. “We made juice drinks for the bears,” says Sky. “They enjoyed them.”Now that Sky is older, he is playing an even more active role in the care of the animals. He promised to raise $75 for his rhino and $25 for Alexander's zebra. To earn the money, Sky and his grandfather planted a vegetable garden. Sky planted seeds (种子), watered, and cleared the grass. When the time came, he harvested the vegetables and sold them in front of his parents' store. When Sky's friends heard about this, they brought vegetables from their parents' gardens to sell, too. With the help of his friends, he earned enough money to keep his promises.Sky is one of the youngest people to adopt an animal at the Great Plains Zoo. When people feel stuck on important projects, they tend to feel angry or depressed. According to Dr. Trice's research, taking time out to laugh can help us to get rid of negative feelings and allow us to retur n to a task or move on to another project unaffected by past defeat. If humor is really this important, then why don't we use it more often on the job? Most likely, the main reason is that many people are unaware of the positive effects of humor in the workplace. However, it is important to realize that some humor is not suitable for the workplace, and that it is often used at wrong times.1. Everyone Likes Humor题二十:Several times my daughter had tel ephoned to say, “Mum, you must come and see the daffodils (水仙花) before they are over.” I wanted to go, but it was a twohour drive from Lake Arrowhead. “I will go next Tuesday,” I promised, a little unwillingly, on her third call. The next Tuesday dawned cold and rainy. Still, I had promised, and so I drove there. When I finally walked into Carolyn's house and hugged and greeted my grandchildren, I said, “Forget the daffodils, Carolyn! The road is invisible (看不见的)in the cloud and fog, and there is nothing in the world except you and these children that I want to see!”My daughter smiled calmly and said, “We drive in this weather all the time, Mum. You will never forgive yourself if you miss this experience.”After abo ut twenty minutes, we turned onto a small road and I saw a small church. On the far side of the church, I saw a hand-lettered sign that read “Daffodil Garden”.We got out of the car and each took a child's hand, and I followed Carolyn down the path. Then, we turned a corner of the path, and I looked up and gasped. Before me lay the most beautiful sight! There were five acres of flowers! “But who has done this?” I asked Carolyn. “It's just one woman,” Carolyn answered. “That's h er home,” C arolyn pointed to a well-kept A-frame house that looked small and modest in the midst of all that glory. We walked up to the house. On the patio (庭院), we saw a poster. “Ans wers to the Q uestions I Know You Are Asking” was the headline. The first answer was a simple one. “50,000 bulbs (鳞茎),” it read. The second answer was, “One at a time, by one woman.” The third answer was, “Began in 1958.”I thought of this woman whom I had never met, who, more than fifty years before, had begun — one bulb at a time — to bring the beauty and joy to the mountain top.1. The author didn't go to see the daffodils at first because ________.A. she was not interested in themB. they were growing on the mountain topC. the weather was not good enoughD. it was not easy for her to drive there2. What do we know about the woman living in the A-frame house?A. She must be out of mind.B. She acted as a gardener there.C. It took her great determination to grow the daffodils.D. She was poor and made her living by selling daffodils.3. What could the author probably learn from this experience?A. Nothing is too difficult if you put your heart into it.B. We must put the interests of others above our own.C. We can change the world by growing flowers.D. It's never too late to learn.4. W hat would be the best title for the passage?A. Roadkill.“Ecopassages” may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over and under roads.“These ecopassages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can avoid road accidents,” said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Protectio n Society. But do animals actually use the eco-passages? The answer is yes.Paul Beier of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an eco-passage that went under a highway. This showed that the lions used the passage.Builders of eco-passages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and around them.Animals seem to__be__catching__on.Animals as different as salamanders and grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses.Next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around. You might see an animal on an overpass!1.The writer uses the example of ocelots to show that ________.A.wild animals have become more dangerousB.the driving conditions have improved greatlyC.the measure for protecting wildlife fails to workD.an increasing number of animals are killed in road accidents2.When the writer says that animals seem “to be catching on”,he means ________.A.animals begin to realize the danger on the roadB.animals begin to learn to use eco-passagesC.animals are crossing the road in groupsD.animals are increasing in number3.This passage is written to ________.A.protect the endangered animalsB.call on drivers to be careful when seeing animals on the roadC.introduce a new way to help protect wild animalsD.tell us the main reason for the killing of animals in the USBFood webs throughout the ocean are in trouble because of overfishing.About one billion people rely on seafood for protein. However, people are fishing more species faster than those fish can reproduce(繁殖).By 2048, says the World Wildlife Fund, the number of all present food fish could reduce by 90%.So few fish would remain in the world that people couldn't depend on them for food.Climate changes will most likely trouble food webs further. As average global temperatures rise, the ocean gets more carbon dioxide. That makes the ocean more acidic, which does harm to the lives in the ocean.Fewer of those lives will grow stronger, leaving less to eat. There will be more effects on the food web.Aquaculture—raising fish and seafood in farms—isn't necessarily the answer to these problems. Sometimes companies destroy mangrove(红树林) forests and other sensitive habitats in order to build fish farms. Habitat destruction also leaves coastal areas easily flooded.“A lot of our freshwater comes from the ocean as rain,” says Shannon, an ocean scientist. It was calculated that when its population reached its highest point, there were more than 3 billion passenger pigeons—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the United States, making it perhaps the most abundant bird in the world.Even as late as 1870 when their numbers had already become smaller,a flock believed to be 1 mile wide and 320 miles (about 515 kilometers) long was seen near Cincinnati. Sadly, the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing.Where the birds were most abundant, people believed there was an ever-lasting supply and killed them by the thousands.Commercial hunters attracted them to small clearings with grain, waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants. By the closing decades of the 19th century, the hardwood forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by Americans' need for wood, which scattered (驱散) the flocks and forced the birds to go farther north, where cold temperatures and spring storms contributed to their decline.Soon the great flocks were gone, never to be seen again. In 1897,the state of Michigan passed a law prohibiting the killing of passenger pigeons, but by then,no sizable flocks had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last confirmed wild pigeon in the United States was shot by a boy in Pike County,Ohio,in 1900.For a time,a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known affectionately as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoological Garden on September 1,1914. 1.In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons________. A.were the biggest bird in the world B.lived mainly in the south of America C.did great harm to the natural environment D.were the largest bird population in the US 答案:D 解析:考查推理判断。 2.The underlined word “undoing” probably refers to the pigeons'________. A.escape B.ruin C.liberation D.evolution 答案:B 解析:考查词义猜测。 3.What was the main reason for people to kill passenger pigeons? A.To seek pleasure. B.To save other birds. C.To make money. D.To protect crops. 4.What can we infer about the law passed in Michigan? A.It was ignored by the public. B.It was declared too late. C.It was unfair. D.It was strict. Ⅳ.完形填空 (2015·昆明一中一模) He lost his arms in an accident, where his father lost his life.Because his father was the main__1__of support for the family, since then,he has had to totally__2__his brother.Except for writing with his__3__,he himself could do nothing else.
