Nothing too exciting.But then in early July, my parents surprised us with the news that we were going on a big cross-country road trip! They had rented an RV and we were going to drive all the way from our home in Massachusetts out to California and back. Jake and I had never been farther west than Ohio before, so we were really psyched.We hit the road on July 5th, bright and early. The RV was huge! It had a little kitchen, bathroom, bunks for sleeping, and a TV/living room area. My dad was pretty nervous about driving such a big vehicle at first, but he got the hang of it after a while. We'd cruise along for a few hours, then stop and see the sights in whatever new state or city we rolled into.Our first stop after leaving Massachusetts was in Pennsylvania, where we visited the Gettysburg battlefield. I'll admit, I wasn't too excited about this one - just a bunch of fields and old cannons. But the guide they had there was actually really cool and made it more interesting than I expected, explaining all about the soldiers and strategies. By the end I had a new appreciation for how important and tragic that battle was.Next up was Ohio, where we stopped and went cedar point, which is this awesome amusement park right on Lake Erie. The roller coasters there were absolutely insane! Jake was too shortto go on the big boy coasters, but I went on everything. My favorite was the Millennium Force - it's this giant steel coaster that goes over 300 feet high and hits crazy speeds. I loved it!From there we drove across Indiana and Illinois, stopping for a quick walking tour of downtown Chicago. I'd never seen buildings so tall! The city seemed cool from what little we saw, but it was also pretty dirty and crowded.Our big stop in the Midwest was at the unbelievable St. Louis Arch. Oh man, pictures just don't do it justice. This giant shiny arch is just sitting there along the Mississippi River, perfectly framing the skyline behind it. We took a little tram car right up to the top for an amazing view. I had to laugh though - my dad is pretty claustrophobic and he was hyperventilating a bit in that tiny tram car on the way up!After crossing Missouri and Kansas, we entered Colorado and saw our first real mountains out west. The Rockies are just breathtaking! We stopped for a few days near Denver and went hiking and whitewater rafting. I was kind of nervous about the rafting but our guide was great and it ended up being a total rush.From Colorado we drove through Utah, stopping at Arches National Park. The rock formations there are mind-blowing - it'slike being on another planet. We hiked through some narrow canyons and under these crazy arched rocks that seem to defy gravity.Finally, after driving through Nevada, we arrived in California! Our first stop was the Grand Canyon. I don't think any pictures or description can really capture how unbelievably massive it is. We took a little hiking trail down into the canyon a ways and the size of it just overwhelms you. A park ranger told us that the Grand Canyon is over a mile deep and up to 18 miles wide in some spots! Absolutely insane.From there it was on to Las Vegas. Weird place! All the hotels and casinos are like these over-the-top castles or pyramids or weird themed buildings. The lights and costumes and commotion everywhere was pretty cool though, in a strange way. And don't worry, my parents didn't actually take us gambling or anything like that!Our final destination was Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean! Walking along the beach in Santa Monica was amazing after being in the desert areas for so long. The ocean just seems to go on forever. We also went up to the Griffith Observatory one night and from up there you can see the entire LA sprawl of city lights stretching out into the distance.On the long drive back home we stopped again in Vegas (my dad really dug the all-you-can-eat buffets there for some reason...) and in Utah to see some more parks. But after nearly a month of traveling, Jake and I were pretty tired and just zoned out playing video games in the RV for most of the drive back across the plains states.Overall it was just the best road trip ever. We got to see so many famous attractions and beautiful landscapes that you just can't fully appreciate unless you experience them in person. And spending all that time exploring the country and making family memories in our RV home-on-wheels was awesome. I feel so lucky my parents made it all happen! I'm already bugging them about what our next big adventure will be...。
