I actually think it's important to be physically active and I enjoy sports like basketball and soccer. The problem is having to get dressed out for PE every day in those smelly locker rooms! I dread going in there and having to change clothes in front of everyone. It's justso awkward and uncomfortable at this age. Whenever it's time for PE, I wish I could just skip that part and go straight to the gym.One of the biggest highlights so far has been joining the schoolband. I've played the flute since 4th grade and I'm so excited to be part of the band now. We practice every day during school and have started learning some really fun pop songs to perform at the upcoming holiday concert. I've made some great friends with the other flute players and we're all looking forward to the concert.Another new thing is getting a locker this year. We didn't have lockers in elementary school so this is my first time having one. It's actually harder than it looks to easily open a locker combo! For the first few weeks, I struggled with my lock every day and was constantly late to classes because I couldn't get my locker open in time between periods. But I'm a pro at it now after lots of practice.The school lunch is one thing I'm still getting used to. The elementary school lunches were better with more kid-friendly options like chicken nuggets, pizza, and corn dogs. The middle school lunches seem a bit more institutional with more unpopular items like mushy canned vegetables, chunky meatsandwiches, and jello for dessert most days. But at least they have some decent snack lines with things like pretzels, baked chips, and Rice Krispies treats. Those help get me through the day when the main lunch doesn't look too appealing.Speaking of food, another new challenge in middle school has been dealing with more freedom during lunch periods. At my old elementary school, we all ate together in one lunch period while teachers monitored us. In middle school, we have multiple lunch shifts with wider windows of time. During that window, we can either eat in the cafeteria, the courtyard, or some hallway areas. Having that freedom and less supervision is nice but also a bit overwhelming. I've definitely seen some kids starting to experiment with things they really shouldn't like vaping or sneaking off campus when they're not supposed to. I try to stick with my friends and stay out of trouble!Overall, I think I've adjusted pretty well to the middle school experience so far. It has been a big transition from elementary school with many new things to get used to. But I'm enjoying the independence, freedom, and variety of classes. I've become a lot more responsible and a better student from having to manage multiple teachers, assignments, and deadlines. While there are things I miss about elementary school, I feel like I'm becoming areal teenager and more prepared for high school with all the new challenges.
