It's this huge plaza right in the center of Beijing that can hold up to 1 million people! There are monuments, museums, and the Forbidden City located right next to it. I can't wait to see the giant portrait of Chairman Mao hanging on the gate. It's going to be so awesome in person.Speaking of the Forbidden City, that's next on our list. The Forbidden City used to be the imperial palace for 24 different emperors over almost 500 years! It has nearly 10,000 rooms and covers around 180 acres of land. That's almost as big as my school and the houses on my whole street combined! I'm reallylooking forward to exploring the ancient buildings, gardens, and seeing all the historical artifacts. They say it's one of the best preserved sites of classical architecture in the world.After the Forbidden City, we're going to check out the Temple of Heaven. It's this incredible religious complex of buildings where emperors would go and pray for good harvests. The architecture there is stunning, with these incredibly ornate and colorful designs. I saw pictures of the circular temple building and it looks like something straight out of a fairy tale. They also have ceremonies and rituals that date back hundreds of years that we might get to see performed!Beijing is also famous for its delicious cuisine, so we're definitely going to do lots of eating there too. My favorite Chinese dishes are dumplings, noodles, and Peking duck. I'm excited to try authentic versions made by real Beijing chefs.We're going to go to some famous old restaurants as well as quirky modern fusion places. I've heard the street food in Beijing is out of this world too, with things like jianbing (a kind of crepe), tanghulu (candied fruit on a stick), and amazing dumplings from hole-in-the-wall shops. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!In addition to the historic sites and food, we're also going to check out some cool modern attractions in Beijing. There's this incredible place called the Beijing Hikers Club that organizes awesome hiking and camping trips on the Great Wall and into the surrounding mountains. I really hope we get to go on one of their excursions because it would be so neat to camp out on the Great Wall under the stars! The Beijing Botanical Garden is another spot we want to hit up. It has over 6,000 species of plants and flowers from all over China and the world. There's even a section recreating different plant ecosystems like tropical rainforests.My family is also really interested in seeing some of the amazing new architecture that Beijing has, like the Bird's Nest stadium from the 2008 Olympics and buildings designed by famous international architects. The CCTV Headquarters skyscraper looks so funky and modern. Part of me wishes we could take a tour and see the inside too!I've been practicing some basic Mandarin phrases to use on our trip as well. The most important one is "Nǐ hǎo" for "hello." I've also learned how to say "thank you" (xièxiè), "delicious" (hào chī), and "Where is the bathroom?" (Xǐshǒujiān zài nǎlǐ?) Just in case! My teachers have told me that most people in the majortourist areas of Beijing speak at least a little bit of English. But I still want to try using my Chinese whenever I can.Overall, I'm just super psyched for this trip! Beijing is the capital city and it's going to be an amazing adventure. We've been planning this vacation for months and I can hardly wait.First, we are going to visit some of the most famous historical sites in Beijing. Top on my list is the Great Wall of China. I've seen so many pictures and videos of the Great Wall snaking over the mountains. It looks incredible! Did you know the Great Wall is over 13,000 miles long and was built over 2,000 years ago? That's older than a lot of countries! I hope I get to walk on a part of the Great Wall and take some really cool pictures.Another place I really want to see is the Forbidden City. This huge palace complex used to be where the emperors of China lived with their families and officials. No one else was allowedinside, which is why it's called the Forbidden City. It has almost 10,000 rooms! I bet I could get lost wandering around in there. I'm going to pretend I'm an emperor checking on all my servants. The Forbidden City also has lots of ornate decorations and beautiful gardens that I'm eager to explore.While we're in Beijing, we also plan to see Tiananmen Square. This massive public plaza is right next to the Forbidden City. I've learned that important events and ceremonies happened there throughout China's history. Apparently it can hold over a million people! That's like an entire city packed into one square. I can't even imagine what a crowd that huge would look like. Maybe we'll get to see some sort of cultural performance or celebration while we're visiting Tiananmen Square.Another stop on our Beijing tour will be the Summer Palace. This was the emperors' vacation home and gardens to escape the heat of the city in summertime. It looks so pretty with all the traditional buildings, willow trees, lakes and bridges. I hope I get to take a boat ride across the lake! The Summer Palace also has the world's longest covered walkway which I think will be fun to walk through and check out all the designs and paintings on the ceiling and walls.We're also planning to do some other cultural activities while in Beijing. We want to attend a Chinese acrobat show because I've heard they are absolutely amazing with all their flips, choreography and daring stunts. I'm a little nervous we might see someone get injured, but mostly just excited to see their skills in person. I've been practicing my cartwheels to get ready!Another fun thing will be trying my hand at Chinese calligraphy. Using those special brushes to paint delicate characters on paper looks beautifully difficult. I really want to learn how to write my name in Chinese calligraphy as a unique souvenir. We may even take a class on the local cuisine so we can learn to cook some classic Beijing dishes like Peking duck. I love duck, so I'm really looking forward to that cooking demo.I also really hope we get to see a traditional Chinese opera performance. I know the singing styles sound very different than Western operas, but I think it will be fascinating to experience. The costumes and stage designs are supposed to be so colorful and elaborate too. Even if I don't understand everything happening, I bet it will be a visually stunning show.While we're traveling around the city, I'll be on the lookout for fun markets and shops to buy some great souvenirs. I definitely want to find a traditional Chinese dress or jacket calleda qi pao. They are so bright and pretty with all the embroidered silk designs. Maybe I could even get a little one custom made to fit me! I also really want to buy a Chinese fan – hopefully a beautiful one with fancy tassels and paintings on it. And you can't forget to get Chinese snacks and candies as edible souvenirs!Lastly, I really hope we get to celebrate some special holidays or festivals while we're in Beijing this summer. It would be so cool to experience things like the Dragon Boat Festival where they have dragon boat racing and eat special rice dumplings. Or the Qixi Festival which is sort of like Chinese Valentine's Day where girls make offerings for a good hubsandy. I'll be on the lookout for festival decorations, performances, activities and food trucks so we can join in the fun!No matter what all we end up doing, I just know this trip to Beijing is going to be the adventure of a lifetime. Seeing such an ancient and culturally rich city is a dream come true for me. I feel so lucky my parents are taking me and I can't wait to make a million amazing memories.
