Answer the questions below each text by choosing [A], [B], [C] or [D]. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (40 points)Text1When you think of the tremendous technological progress we have made, it’s amazing how little we have developed in other respects. We may speak contemptuously of the poor old Romans because they relished the orgies of slaughter that went on in their arenas. We may despise them because they mistook these goings on for entertainment. We may forgive them condescendingly because they lived 2000 years ago and obviously knew no better. But are our feelings of superiority really justified? Are we any less blood-thirsty? Why do boxing matches, for instance, attract such universal interest? Don’t the spectators who attend them hope they will see some violence? Human beings remains as bloodthirsty as ever they were. The only difference between ourselves and the Romans is that while they were honest enough to admit that they enjoyed watching hungey lions tearing people apart and eating them alive, we find all sorts of sophisticated arguments to defend sports which shouldhave been banned long age; sports which are quite as barbarous as, say, public hangings or bearbaiting. It really is incredible that in this day and age we should still allow hunting or bull-fighting, that we should be prepared to sit back and watch two men batter each other to pulp in a boxing ring, that we should be relatively unmoved by the sight of one or a number of racing cars crashing and bursting into flames. Let us not deceive ourselves. Any talk of ‘the sporting spirit’ is sheer hypocrisy. People take part in violent sports because of the high rewards they bring. Spectators are willing to pay vast sums of money to see violence.A world heavyweight championship match, for instance, is front page news. Millions of people are disappointed if a big fight is over in two rounds instead of fifteen. They feel disappointment because they have been deprived of the exquisite pleasure of witnessing prolonged torture and violence. Why should we ban violent sports if people enjoy them so much? You may well ask. The answer is simple: they are uncivilized. For centuries man has been trying to improve himself spiritually and emotionally - admittedly with little success. But at least we no longer tolerate the sight madmen cooped up in cages, or public floggings of any of the countlessother barbaric practices which were common in the past. Prisons are no longer the grim forbidding places they used to be. Social welfare systems are in operation in many parts of the world. Big efforts are being made to distribute wealth fairly. These changes have come about not because human beings have suddenly and unaccountably improved, but because positive steps were taken to change the law. The law is the biggest instrument of social change that we have and it may exert great civilizing influence. If we banned dangerous and violent sports, we would be moving one step further to improving mankind. We would recognize that violence is degrading and unworthy of human beings.21. It can be inferred from the passage that the author’s opinion of nowadays’ human beings isA. not very high.B. high.C. contemptuous.D. critical.22. The main idea of this passage isA. vicious and dangerous sports should be banned by law.B. people are willing to pay vast sums money to see violence.C. to compare two different attitudes towards dangerous sports.D. people are bloodthirsty in sports.23. That the author mentions the old Romans isA. To compare the old Romans with today’s people.B. to give an example.C. to show human beings in the past know nothing better.D. to indicate human beings are used to bloodthirsty.24. How many dangerous sports does the author mention in this passage?A. Three.B. Five.C. Six.D. Seven.25. The purpose of the author in writing this passage isA. that, by banning the violent sports, we human beings can improve our selves.B. that, by banning the dangerous sports, we can improve the law.C. that we must take positive steps to improve social welfare system.D. to show law is the main instrument of social change. Text 2Scientists have known since 1952 that DNA is the basic stuff of heredity. They've known its chemical structure since 1953. They know that human DNA acts like a biological computer programsome 3 billion bits long that spells out the instructions for making proteins, the basic building blocks of life. But everything the genetic engineers have accomplished during the past half-century is just a preamble to the work that Collins and Anderson and legions of colleagues are doing now. Collins leads the Human Genome Project, a 15-year effort to draw the first detailed map of every nook and cranny and gene in human DNA. Anderson, who pioneered the first successful human gene-therapy operations, is leading the campaign to put information about DNA to use as quickly as possible in the treatment and prevention of human diseases. What they and other researchers are plotting is nothing less than a biomedical revolution. Like Silicon Valley pirates reverse-engineering a computer chip to steal a competitor's secrets, genetic engineers are decoding life's molecular secrets and trying to use that knowledge to reverse the natural course of disease. DNA in their hands has become both a blueprint and a drug, a pharmacological substance of extraordinary potency that can treat not just symptoms or the diseases that cause them but also the imperfections in DNA that make people susceptible to a disease. And that's just the beginning. For all the fevered workbeing done, however, science is still far away from the Brave New World vision of engineering a perfect human—or even a perfect tomato. Much more research is needed before gene therapy becomes commonplace, and many diseases will take decades to conquer, if they can be conquered at all.In the short run, the most practical way to use the new technology will be in genetic screening. Doctors will be able to detect all sorts of flaws in DNA long before they can be fixed. In some cases the knowledge may lead to treatments that delay the onset of the disease or soften its effects. Someone with a genetic predisposition to heart disease, for example, could follow a low-fat diet. And if scientists determine that a vital protein is missing because the gene that was supposed to make it is defective, they might be able to give the patient an artificial version of the protein. But in other instances, almost nothing can be done to stop the ravages brought on by genetic mutations. (409 words)26. It can be inferred from the text that Collins and Anderson and legions of colleagues _____.[A] know that human DNA acts like a biological computer program[B] have found the basic building blocks of life[C] have accomplished some genetic discovery during the past half-century[D] are making a breakthrough in DNA27. Collins and Anderson are cited in the text to indicate all the following EXCEPT that ______.[A] time-consuming effort is needed to accomplish the detailed map of in human DNA[B] human gene-therapy operations may be applied to the patients[C] gene-therapy now is already generally used to the treatment and prevention of human diseases[D] information about DNA may be used in the treatment and prevention of human diseases28. Naturally the Journal receives ongoing abuse from the herd for its distressing independence. Yet, rarely is the criticism straightforward but rather an assault on the conservatism ofthe Journal’s editorial page, which strikes conformist journalists as an insult and is the real cause of the herd’s distress. Rather the criticism focuses on the Journal’s bottom line, its sluggish share price, and rumors that the family controlling the paper, the Bancroft family, is unhappy and about to sell it.The rumors of the Bancrofts’ unhappiness are all highly exaggerated and quickly refuted. For this proud family whose ancestor, Clarence W. Barron, purchased the Journal and with it the Dow Jones news service in 1902 conceives of its ownership as a “public trust.” That is how Roy A. Hammer, a lawyer and trustee for the entities through which the Bancrofts control the paper, described their sense of ownership. This is not so unusual. Great newspapers have always played a major role in American civic life. I said “great newspapers,” serious newspapers, the kind that put gathering news ahead of sensationalism. Most of the truly profitable newspapers in the country today are essentially shopping circulars with some cheap journalism printed on those pages not devoted to shopping mall sales. The great newspaper chains take over local papers, fire journalists, and set out to fill their pages with still moreadvertisements. Well, they supply a service. They let readers know about the price, say, of chicken at the Giant or snow tires at the CVS. But fewer and fewer local newspapers supply much news and analysis. Great newspapers do, and not one that I know of makes a vast amount of money.Great newspapers do help to set the agenda for the nation. They break stories of corruption or on other vital matters. One of the few things I find admirable about the New York Times is that its controlling family, the Sulzberger family, is not intent on squeezing every penny of profit out of its flagship paper. Thus last week when I read a long critique in the Times of the Wall Street Journal’s management for its sluggish financial performance, I discovered hypocrisy. The hypocrisy is all the greater coming from liberals who are criticizing conservatives for their alleged devotion the “Almighty Dollar.” Profits are essential to all businesses. For one thing they are a very accurate poll of the populace’s tastes, but there are other services some corporations supply to society. Both the Journal and the Times supply—at too higha cost—information that enlightens the citizenry.36. The journalistic herd’s distress is caused by the Wall Street Journal’s _____.[A] credibility [B] prejudice [C] conformism [D] professionalism37. The Bancroft family purchased the Wall Street Journal to _____.[A] sell it for a higher price [B] promote the Dow Jones news service[C] dominate the great newspapers chains [D] influence American civic life38. Paragraphs E and G have been correctly placed. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (10 points)In 1959 the average American family paid $ 989 for a year’s supply of food. In 1972 the family paid $1,311. That was a price increase of nearly one –third. Every family has had this sort of experience. Everyone agrees that the cost of feeding a family has risen sharply. But there is less agreement when reasons for the rise are being discussed. Who is really responsible? Many blame the farmers who produce the vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs, and cheese that stores offer for sale. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the farmer’s share of the $1,311 spent by the family in 1972 was $521. This was 31percent more than the farmer had received in 1959.But farmers claim that this increase was very small compared to the increase in their cost of living. Farmers tend to blame others for the sharp rise in food prices. They particularly blame those who process the farm products after the products leave the farm. These include truck drivers, meat packers, manufacturers of packages and other food containers, and the owners of stores where food is sold. 41) __________.Of the $1,311 family food bill in 1972, middlement received $ 790, which was 33 percent more than they had received in 1959. It appears that the middlemen’s profit has increased more than farmer’s. But some economists claim that the middleman’s actual profit was very law. According to economists at the First National City Bank, the profit for meat packers and food stores amounted to less than one per cent. During the same period all other manufacturers were making a profit of more than 5 per cent.42) __________ .43) __________ .Vegetables and chicken cost more when they have been cut into pieces by someone other than the one who buys it. A family should expect to pay more when several “TV dinners” are taken home from the store. These are fully cooked meals, consistingof meat, vegetables, and sometimes desert, all arranged on a metal dish. The dish is put into the over and heated while the housewife is doing something else. Such a convenience costs money. 44) __________.Economists remind us many modern housewives have jobs outside the home. They earn money that helps to pay the family food bills. The housewife naturally has less time and energy for cooking after a day’s work. She wants to buy many kinds of food that can be put on her family’s table easily and quickly.45) __________ .It appears that the answer to the question for rising prices is not a simple one. Producers, consumers, and middlemen all share the responsibility for the sharp rise in food costs.A) Thus, as economists point out:” Some of the basic reasons for widening food price spreads are easily traceable to the increasing use of convenience foods, which transfer much of the time and work of meal preparation from the kitchen to the food processor’s plant.”B) They are among the “middlemen” who stand between the farmer and the people who buy and eat the food. Are middlemen the ones to blame for rising food prices?C) “If the housewife wants all of these.” The economistssay, “that is her privilege, but she must be prepared to pay for the services of the those who make her work easier.”D) Who then is actually responsible for the size of the bill a housewife must pay before she carries the food home from the store? The economists at First National City Bank have an answer to give housewives, but many people will not like it. These economists blame the housewife herself for the jump in food prices. They say that food costs more now because women don’t want to spend much time in the kitchen. Women prefer to buy food which has already been prepared before it reaches the market.E) However, some economists believe that controls can have negative effects over a long period of time. In cities with rent control, the city government sets the maximum rent that a landlord can charge for an apartment.F) Economists do not agree on some of the predictions. They also do not agree on the value of different decisions. Some economists support a particular decision while others criticize it.G) By comparison with other members of the economic system both farmers and middlemen have profited surprisingly little from the rise in food prices. Part CDirections:Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments int0 Chinese. Your translation should be written carefully on ANSWER SHEET 2. (10 points)Gandhi’s pacifism can be separated to some extent from his other teachings. (1)Its motive was religious, but he claimed also for it that it was a definitive technique, a method, capable of producing desired political results. Gandhi’s attitude was not that of most Western pacifists. Satyagraha, (2)the method Gandhi proposed and practiced, first evolved in South Africa, was a sort of non-violent warfare, a way of defeating the enemy without hurting him and without feeling or arousing hatred. It entailed such things as civil disobedience, strikes, lying down in front of railway trains, enduring police charges without running away and without hitting back, and the like. Gandhi objected to “passive resistance” as a translation of Satyagraha: in Gujarati, it seems, the word means “firmness in the truth”. (3)In his early days Gandhi served as a stretcher-bearer on the British side in the Boer War, and he was prepared to do the same again in the war of 1914-1918. Evenafter he had completely abjured violence he was honest enough to see that in war it is usually necessary to take sides. Since his whole political life centred round a struggle for national independence, he could not and,(4)indeed, he did not take the sterile and dishonest line of pretending that in every war both sides are exactly the same and it makes no difference who wins. Nor did he, like most Western pacifists, specialize in avoiding awkward questions. In relation to the late war, one question that every pacifist had a clear obligation to answer was: “What about the Jews? Are you prepared to see them exterminated? If not, how do you propose to save them without resorting to war?”(5)I must say that I have never heard, from any Western pacifist, an honest answer to this question, though I have heard plenty of evasions, usually of the “you’re another” type. But it so happens that Gandhi was asked a somewhat similar question in 1938 and that his answer is on record in Mr. Louis Fischer’s Gandhi and Stalin. According to Mr. Fischer, Gandhi’s view was that the German Jews ought to commit collective suicide, which “would have aroused the world and the people of Germany to Hitler’s violence.”Section Ⅲ WritingPart A51.DirectionsOne of your students, Li Ming, wants to study for the Master's Degree under the supervision of Professor Smith in an oversea university, you are asked to write a letter of recommendation for him in about 100 words.Do not sign your own name at the end of the letter.

1. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay on how to balance work and leisure. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. (2018年12月六级)In contemporary society, it cannot be denied that work and leisure play an equally important role in our normal life. Work may bring us pressure, while leisure can offer us pleasure. As a result, how to strike a balance between them has attracted extensive attention from the general public. To achieve this goal, in my mind, there are at least two approaches. To begin with, life today is filled with sources of stress, and the fast-paced lifestyle is responsible for the upsurge in various individual problems. If one puts too much time on work, his health condition will be adversely affected. Furthermore, if people invest too much time in leisure, their career developments may be hindered, and they are more likely to lose opportunities for a better life.Happiness does not lie in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievements. To sum up, due attention should be paid to the balance between work and leisure. The time is right for us to take full advantage of ample existing opportunities. We should do our utmost to arrange our life in a more orderly manner. Only in this way can our society become a more harmonious place for us to live in. (205 words)根据此文,练习(把how to balance work and leisure换成)how to balance academic study and extracurricular activities.how to balance job responsibilities and personal interests.2. For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the importance of building trust between employers and employees. You can cite examples to illustrate your views. (2018年6月六级)It is beyond doubt that interpersonal relationship is of utmost importance for individuals and companies alike in such as a competitive world. In a large firm, for example, building trust could allow us to improve work efficiency and have a huge impact on our life. Many complicated factors are involved in understanding the importance of building trust between employers and employees. To begin with, in modern society where competition is intense, young people are under enormous strain from their work and family. However, trust can help to ease our tension and resolve our dispute in a workplace. On the other hand, it is well-known that we exist in a dynamic world with various difficulties. Trust is easy to destroy but hard to regain. For example, if an employee loses the trust of his employer, it will definitely undermine the harmony in the company. The employee might eventually receive a pink slip.To sum up, one should lay great emphasis on establishing trust in the society. Parents should offer proper advice to their children to form appropriate outlook of the world, when it comes to mutual trust in social interaction. The measures may not guarantee ultimate success, but the eventual pay-off could well be worth the effort. (206 words)根据此文,练习(把题干的between employers and employees换成以下两个短语):between teachers and studentsbetween business and consumers3. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay commenting on the saying “Seek to understand others, and you will be understood.”You can cite examples to illustrate your views. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. (2017年12月六级)As an ancient proverb goes, “seek to understand other, and you will be understood.”Simple as the saying is, it obviously emphasizes the importance of mutual understanding. To my knowledge, understanding each other plays a key role in our daily communication. Two reasons can be cited to account for the correctness of this principle. On the one hand, mutual understanding can widen our circle of friends. For example, in modern society where competition is intense, young people are under enormous strain from their work and family. If one tries to understand the situation of others, they are more likely to become close friends, helping each other in face of hardship. On the other, mutual understanding can allow us to avoid the conflict. It is well-known that we exist in a dynamic world with various difficulties. To avoid the social misunderstanding, we need to put ourselves in others’shoes. To sum up, we should lay great emphasis on mutual understanding in personal interaction. The time is right for us to take full advantage of ample existing opportunities. We should do our utmost to understand others. Only in this way can our society become a better place for us to live in. (200 words)根据此文,练习(把题干的名言换成以下两句):Help others, and you will be helped when you are inneed.Respect others, and you will be respected.4. Directions: Suppose you are asked to give advice on whether to major in science or humanities at college. Write an essay to state your opinion. You are required to write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. (2017年6月六级)In recent years, higher education has captured a great deal of attention from the general public. Opinions vary greatly when it comes to whether one should choose science or humanities at college. If I were you, I would like to take science as my major. There are two fundamental factors contributing to my preference. To begin with, as Chinese universities keep expanding their scale of students’enrollment, college students find it more and more difficult to find a job upon graduation. However, it is easier for those students majoring in science to seek a decent job, since a great number of positions require candidates who study science.Furthermore, never in history was science and technology so emphasized as in modern society. Technological innovation really brings us much convenience, exerting a huge impact on our traditional cultures. Science is useful and inseparable from our life.Given the factors I have just outlined, I maintain that science is of utmost importance to our life and our future. Immediate ways for advocating science study remain elusive. However, public recognition of the necessity will represent the first step in finding effective measures. (188 words)根据此文,练习(把题干的whether后面换成):whether to attend a vocational college or a university whether to attend college at home or abroad5. For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on innovation. Your essay should include the importance of innovation and measures to be taken to encourage innovation. You are required to write at least150 words but no more than 200 words. (2016年12月六级)It goes without saying that innovation plays a key role in our era when science and technology is developing at an alarming rate. The past several years has witnessed a sharp increase in the number of scientists who are making new discoveries in their areas. This will definitely exert a huge impact on our society.Considering the importance and necessity of this spirit, I feel responsible for discussing it further. To begin with, with the unemployment rate running high in most big cities, job security is becoming less and less guaranteed. However, innovation can create a whole new set of jobs to raise the employment rate. Furthermore, people with the spirit of innovation can not only accumulate wealth, but also establish their career, fit into society, and even attain social status. Einstein, honored for his success in the theory of relativism, is always remembered for the spirit of innovation, which shines through every chapter of his life.By and large, I personally argue that innovation considerably alters the way people communicate with each other. The fundamental way in which the government advocates this spirit is to promote quality-oriented education. The mass media should also join in the efforts in educating the citizens. For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the use of robots. Try to imagine what will happen when more and more robots take the place of human beings in industry as well as people's daily lives. (2016年6月六级)The development of technology has brought us unprecedented transformation, which is inevitable and undeniable. Robots, which are capable of exhibiting artificial intelligence, have emerged into our vision, and tend to play an increasingly important role in our life.Consequently, there is much controversy over what will happen if robots replace human beings in the future. As regards to the social implication of robots, my discussion on the issue is mainly twofold. To begin with, if robots play our roles, the job market is getting gloomy and competition will become fierce. It will be increasingly difficult for college undergraduates to find a decent job. Furthermore, traditional way of thinking will change dramatically, and people are exhibiting greater open-mindedness and a burning desire to determine their own destiny. Students will try to get the opportunity to increase their knowledge in high-skilled jobs. As a result, they will not be replaced by robots.Based on my personal experience, I can safely draw a conclusion that the robot is a double-edged sword. Whether it is a boon or a bane will be discussed for a number of years to come. However, one should make sensible use of technology, being a master rather than a slave of it. (203 words)根据此文,练习(把题干的when后面换成):when people spend more and more time in the virtual world instead of interacting in the real worldwhen more and more people study online instead of attending school附:仿写范本(when people spend more and more time in the virtual world instead of interacting in the real world)The development of technology has brought us unprecedented transformation, which is inevitable and undeniable. It goes without saying that the Internet plays an increasingly important role in our life and study. Consequently, there is much controversy over what will happen if people prefer to spend time in the virtual world rather than the real society. As regards to the social implication of this phenomenon, my discussion is mainly twofold. To begin with, technology could render city-dwellers slaves to high technology, alienating people from one another. Without communications in the real world, people will become more and more indifferent to each other. Furthermore, even though the advent of the Internet opens up the possibilities of interacting via the computer, a lack of exercise will lead citizens to an unhealthy lifestyle. People will become physically weak as a result of the high technology.Based on my personal experience, I can safely draw a conclusion that the Internet is a double-edged sword. Whether it is a boon or a bane will be discussed for a number of years to come. However, one should make sensible use of technology, being a master rather than a slave of it. (203 words)7. For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay based on the picture below. You should start your essay with a brief description of the picture and then discuss whether there is a shortcut to learning. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words. (2014年12月六级第三套)Ironically, the cartoon displays a very special scene: a young student is asking for a book named “How to Do Well in School without Studying”, and the lady at the front desk advised him to find it in the fiction section. Simple as it is, what the picture conveys to us is thought-provoking: there is no shortcut to learning. When it comes to the significance of this phenomenon, I feel it necessary to discuss the matter further. To begin with, higher education plays a key role in aiding students’growth and development. However, schools nowadays tend to pay special attention to the students’academic scores rather than their morality. Furthermore, in modern society where competition is intense, young people are under enormous strain from their work and family. Consequently, majority of the students are always dreaming for a short path. The fundamental way in which the government addresses the problem is to raise our awareness. School should lay much emphasis on students’ability and basic skills. The mass media should also join in the efforts in educating thecitizens. Only through concerted steps can our schools have more peace and harmony. 1. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on how to best handle the relationship between doctors and patients. You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. (2017年12月四级)It is generally accepted that the service industry, especially the one in hospital, tends to play an important role and has recently arisen as a heated topic in our daily life. The relationship between doctors and patients sometimes has a major impact on our society. In my understanding, to handle the relationship, there are mainly two approaches. On the one hand, with the quickening pace of urban life and ever-increasing pressure, people in growing numbers are suffering from enormous stress. If one tries to understand the situation of others, they are more likely to communicate more effectively. On the other hand, the mass media should try to educate the general public to teach them how to respect doctors. The government and authority should also enact certain regulations to eliminate those unqualified doctors. To sum up, we must lay great emphasis on the relationship between doctors and patients. The better the relationship in terms of mutual trust, the better will enhance the accuracy of diagnosis.2. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay. Suppose you have two options upon graduation: one is to work in a state-owned business and the other in a joint venture. You are to make a choice between the two. Write an essay to explain the reasons for your choice. (2016年12月四级)It has been widely noted that finding a good job is of utmost importance in such a competitive society. There areseveral career paths. Opinions vary greatly when it comes to whether one should work for a state-owned enterprise or a joint venture. For me, I would like to choose working in a joint venture. There are two fundamental factors contributing to my option. To begin with, it is increasingly difficult for college undergraduates to find a decent job in a state-owned company, since the job market is getting gloomy and competition is becoming fierce. One needs to take several national exams in order to get the job. Furthermore, there is an increasing upward mobility of the younger generation and dramatic changes in traditional concepts. Even though working for a state-owned company brings people security, one can find plenty of new opportunities in a joint venture. To sum up, working for a joint venture can increase our knowledge and skills and broaden our horizon. The time is right for us to take full advantage of ample existing opportunities. We should do our utmost to make the right choice for ourselves, which may exert a huge impact on our future. 3. Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an advertisement on your campus website to sell a bicycle you used at college. The saying obviously intends to tell us that paying attention to others’opinions is much more important than expressing one’s own words.Considering the significance of this saying, I feel responsible to explain it further. To start with, with the quickening pace of urban life and ever-increasing pressure, people in growing numbers are suffering from either the physical or mental problems. A lot of them would like to let out their emotions, and listening to your friends can definitely help them relax and unwind.
