Everyone who has a television can receive it because it is on TV.In order to read this magazine you have to have a decoder. Each page of it is numbered, so you only have to dial the number to choose which subject you want to read about. There is a wide choice—everything is included from cooking to the latest sports news.If you want to read the news , the first thing you have to do is to turn to the indexpage which has an easy-to-remember page number, 100 for example. Then you start choosing what you want to read. The news is on pages 101 to 109 so you push out the numbers and the news appears written across your screen. Perhaps you want to go out in the afternoon, so you press 181, and a brightly colored weather map appears on the screen. But the weather is terrible so you decide to go shopping and dial 162 for a list of the week’s best bargains. But should you drive or take the train? To answer that question you only have to press 189 for the traffic report. It is very simple to use. But probably the best thing about the service is that it is being updated all the time. Journalists type new material directly onto the screen and whole pages of the magazine can be replaced in minutes.London already has three services. One, transmitted (传播) by ITV, is called ORACLE while the other two, on BBC, are called CEEFAX because they let you see facts. Although CEEFAX and ORACLE have been operating for some time, they have not been well publicized. BBC engineers do not think that their idea will ever replace books and newspapers because they can be taken with you everywhere. But many people would agree that this is a breakthrough as great as the invention of printing, which could change not just our reading habits but our whole way of life.68. What are positive ions? Well, the air is full of ions, electrically charged particles, and generally there is a rough balance between the positive and the negative charged. But sometimes this balance becomesdisturbed and a larger proportion of positive ions are found. This happens naturally before thunderstorms, earthquakes or when winds such as the Mistral, Foehn, Hamsin or Sharav are blowing in certain countries. Or it can be caused by a build-up of static electricity(静电)indoors from carpets or clothing made of man-made fibres, or from TV sets, duplicators or computer display screens. When a large number of positive ions are present in the air many people experience unpleasant effects such as headaches, fatigue, irritability, and some particularly sensitive people suffer nausea or even mental disturbance. Animals are also found to be affected, particularly before earthquakes. Snakes have been observed to come out of hibernation, rats to flee from their burrows, dogs howl and cats jump about unaccountably. This has led the US Geographical Survey to fund a network of volunteers to watch animals in an effort to foresee such disasters before they hit vulnerable areas such as California. On the other hand, when large numbers of negative ions are present, then people have a feeling of well-being. Natural conditions that produce these large amounts are near the sea, close to waterfalls or fountains, or in any place where water is sprayed, or forms a spray. This probably accounts for the beneficial effect of a holiday by the sea, or in the mountains with tumbling streams or waterfalls. To increase the supply of negative ions indoors, some scientists recommend the use of ionizers: small portable machines which generate negative ions. They claim that ionizers not only clean and refresh the air but also improve the health of people sensitive to excess positive ions. Of course, there are the detractors(反对者), other scientists, who dismiss such claims and are skeptical about negative/positive ion research. Therefore, people can only make up their own minds by observing the effects on themselves, or on others, of a negative rich or poor environment. After all, it is debatable whether depending on seismic readings(地震仪读数)to predict earthquakes is more effective than watching the cat.72. What effect does excessive positive ions have on some people?A. They think they are mad.B. They feel rather bad-tempered.C. They become violently sick.D. They are too tired to do anything.73. According to the passage, static electricity can be caused by .A. using home-made electrical goodsB. wearing clothes made of natural materialsC. walking on artificial floor coveringsD. copying TV programs on a computer74. People should be able to come to a decision about ions in the air if they .A. notice their own reactionsB. move to a healthier areaC. observe domestic animalsD. watch how wealthy people behave75. According to the passage, some scientists believe that .A. earthquakes cannot affect any animalB. the unusual behaviors of animals can not be trustedC. neither watching nor using seismograph is reliableD. watching animals to predict earthquakes is more effectiveSection CDirections: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.76.Auctions are public sales of goods, conducted by an officially approved auctioneer. He asks the crowd assembled in the auction-room to make offers, or “bids”, for the various items on sale.He encourages buyers to bid higher figures, and finally names the highest bidder as the buyer of the goods. This is called “knocking down” the goods, for the bidding ends when the auctioneer strikes a small hammer on a table at77.The ancient Roman probably invented sales by auction, and the English word comes from the Latin auction, meaning “increasing”.The Romans usually sold in this way the goods taken in war.In England in the eighteenth centuries, goods were often sold “by the candle”: a short candle was lit by the auctioneer, and bids could be made while it stayed78.Practically all goods whose qualities vary are sold by auction.Among these are coffee, skins, wool, tea, furs, silk and wines.Auction sales are also usual for land and.79.An auction is usually advertised beforehand with full particulars of the articles to be sold and where and when they can be viewed by potential buyers. If the advertisement cannot give full details, catalogues are printed, and each group of goods to be sold together, called a “lot”, is usually given a number. The auctioneer need not begin with Lot 1 and continue in the order of numbers: he may wait until he notices the fact that certain buyers are in the room and then produce the lots they are likely to be interested in80.goods are sold for.The auctioneer therefore has a direct interest in pushing up the biddingas high as possible. He will not waste time by starting the bidding too low.He will also play on the opponents among his buyers and succeed in getting a high price by encouraging two business competitors to bid against each other.SectionDDirections: Read the passages carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words. In the twentieth century, and particularly in the last 20 years, the old footpaths of the wandering scholars have become vast highways. The vehicle which has read this possible has of course been the aero plane, making contact between scholars even in the most distant places immediately feasible, also providing for the very rapid transmission of knowledge.Apart from the vehicle itself, it is fairly easy to identify the main factors which have brought about the recent explosion in academic movement. Some of these are purely quantitative: they are a far greater number of learning centers, scholars and students. In addition one must recognize the very considerable multiplication of disciplines, which by widening the total area of advanced studies, has produced all enormous number of specialists whose particular interests are precisely defined. These people would work in some isolation if they were not able to keep in touch with similar isolated groups in other countries.Frequently these specializations lie in areas where very rapid developments are taking place, and also where the research needed for developments is extremely costly and takes a long time. It is precisely in these areas that the advantages of collaboration and sharing of expertise(专业知识)appear most evident. Associated with this is the growth of specialist periodicals(期刊,杂志), which enable scholars to Boerne aware of what is happening in different centers of research and to meet each other in conferences. From these meetings come the personal relationships which are at the bottom of almost all schemes of cooperation, and provide them with their most satisfactory stimulus. But as the specializations have increased in number and narrowed in range, there has been an opposite movement towards interdisciplinary studies. These owe much to the belief that one can not properly investigate the incredibly complex problems thrown up by the modern world, and by recent advances in our knowledge along the narrow front of a single discipline. This trend has led to a great deal of academic contact between disciplines, and a far greater emphasis on the pooling of specialist knowledge, reflected in the broad subjects chosen in many international conferences. (Note:Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)81. Besides the vehicle itself, what are the main factors about the recent explosion inacademic movement?82. The academic work becomes more specialized especially in those area that________________________________________.83.
