中国是诗歌的王国，从商周的四言，到楚骚汉赋、汉魏乐府、隋唐律绝和宋词元曲，可谓灼灼其华，蔚然大观。
千百年前的黄钟大吕，至今犹萦绕在苍穹。
然而中国新诗在诞生近百年后的今天，却遭遇了前所未有的尴尬：它既没能与国际接轨，又与中华古典诗词曲赋的优良传统脱节、断裂，割断了传承关系，令广大读者望其兴叹，最后只好弃之而去。
中国新诗为何会处境“尴尬”呢?首先，是由白话新诗至今未能构建审美规范更无法达成审美共识造成的。
无论是《诗经》中的“风雅颂”，还是楚辞、乐府、律诗、宋词、元曲……不论其诗体形式怎么演变，但都是讲究韵律的，作品都具有节奏美、旋律美和韵式美。
由于白话“新诗”“不拘格律，不拘平仄，不拘长短”(胡适《谈新诗》)的随意性和不确定性，自其诞生以来，便成为其发展的严重弊端和障碍。
其次，是由某些诗人一味地强调诗体形式而忽略主题思想造成的。
诗歌是文学形式美的一种体现，但形式美只是诗歌的美丽外衣而已。
过分地强调诗体形式，从而否定主题思想的意义，如近年来所谓的技术主义、玄学派、立体主义、构成主义、达达主义、超现实主义、未来主义等，就像失去了土壤的禾苗一样，必将枯萎。
最后，是由当代诗人在商品经济时代的退缩和自闭造成的。
同古典诗词曲赋相比，当代诗歌在题材内容方面发生了较明显的变化：其一，迫于现实社会生存的巨大综合压力和人类因物质文明进步而带来的精神困惑，当代诗歌的内容越来越局限于私人性的东西，正日愈失去处理重大社会题材的艺术能力，这就使得它日益减少获得公众关注的机会，而只有在少数未被现代社会物质化的心灵当中获得知音。
