高二英语月考试题及答案-大同市第一中学2015-2016学年高二3月月考试题

高二英语单元测试卷2016.3.24命题人;白雪东I.阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)AOnce when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I have ever had: Be bold and brave — and mighty (强大的) forces will come to your aid. Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperatelythrew myself at that guy like a bullet(子弹)—and stopped him cold.”Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds. So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.1.What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?A. Swallow more than you can digest.B. Act slightly above your abilities.C. Develop more mysterious powers.D. Learn to make creative decisions.2.What was especially important for Tim‘s successful defense in the football game?A. His physical strength.B. His basic skill.C. His real fear.D. His spiritual force.3.What can be learned from Paragraph 5?A. Confidence grows more rapidly in adults.B. Trying without success is meaningless.C. Repeated failure creates a better life.D. Boldness can be gained little by little.4.What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?A. To encourage people to be courageous.B. To advise people to build up physical power.C. To tell people the ways to guarantee success.D. To recommend people to develop more abilities.B.The values of artistic works, according to cultural relativism(相对主义), are simply reflections of local social and economic conditions. Such a view, however, fails to explain the ability of some works of art to excite the human mind across cultures and through centuries.History has witnessed the endless productions of Shakespearean plays in every major language of the world. It is never rare to find that Mozart packs Japanese concert halls, as Japanese painter Hiroshige does Paris galleries, Unique works of this kind are different from today’s popular art, even if they began as works of popular art. They have set themselves apart in their timeless appeal and will probably be enjoyed for centuries into the future. In a 1757 essay, the philosopher David Hume argued that because“ the general principles of taste are uniform(不变的) in human nature,” the value of some works of art might be essentially permanent. He observed that Homer was still admired after two thousand years. Works of this type, he believed, spoke to deep and unvarying features of human nature and could continue to exist over centuries. Now researchers are applying scientific methods to the study of the universality of art. For example, evolutionary psychology is being used by literary scholars to explain the long-lasting themes and plot devices in fiction. The structures of musical pieces are now open to experimentalanalysis as never before. Research findings seem to indicate that the creation by a great artist is as permanent an achievement as the discovery by a great scientist.5.According to the passage, what do we know about cultural relativism?A. It introduces different cultural values.B. It explains the history of artistic works.C. It relates artistic values to local conditions.D. It excites the human mind throughout the world.6.In Paragraph 2, the artists are mentioned in order to show that ---.A. great works of art can go beyond national boundariesB. history gives art works special appeal to set them apartC. popular arts are hardly distinguishable from great artsD. great artists are skilled at combining various cultures7.According to Hume, some works of art can exist for centuries because ----.A. they are results of scientific studyB. they establish some general principles of artC. they are created by the world’s greatest artistsD. they appeal to unchanging features of human nature8.Which of the following can best serve as the title of the passageA. Are Artistic Values UniversalB. Are Popular Arts PermanentC. Is Human Nature UniformD. Is Cultural Relativism ScientificC.Guide dogs are going to be available for the children who are unable to see normally in the UK for the first time, as the age limit is to be removed. The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association is to begin training dogs to help blind people under the age of 16.The association says too many youngsters with impaired eyesight are lacking in independence. They have only a limited social life because of their disability. Giving some of them guide dogs at a younger age is intended to help them to widen their range of activities and to improve their sense of self-confidence and independence. Guide dogs for these teenagers will begin to be provided from next year. There has been an experimental project to test the use of guide dogs with younger people.Charlotte, aged 14, was among the youngest guide dog owners. She had been gradually losing her eyesight since the age of eight, and lost her eyesight completely this year. She has been assisted by a two-year-old guide dog. Charlotte used to have a long stick to help her move around, but having a guide dog allows her much more freedom and makes her feel safer. However, the association says there is a worryingly patchy supply of services for the young blind people across the UK, and it calls for national standards to be introduced. As with adult blind people, only a small number of them are likely to be considered suitable for a guide dog. Most will continue to rely on extra help and training from education and social services.9. We can learn from the text that owning guide dogs .A. may meet with difficulties sometimesB. is beneficial to blind children’s developmentC. became possible in the UK recentlyD. is quite universal in the UK10. According to the text, Charlotte’s example proves that .A. it is necessary to carry out the experimental projectB. guide dogs can get along well with disabled peopleC. the association’s opinion is not quite rightD. youngsters need companions and friends11. What does the underlined word “patchy” in the last paragraph probably mean?A. Endless.B. Perfect.C. Inadequate.D. Diverse.12. What is the main idea of the text?A. Blind people need guide dogs’ assistance in their daily life.B. Age limit for the blind to have guide dogs is to be removed.C. More guide dogs will be trained in the UK.D. The project of using guide dogs is to begin.D.Across the United States, universities and colleges have been looking to become more sustainable (可持续发展的) and more than 600 schools have already planned to become eco-friendly. The EcoDorm, home to 36 students at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, was designed to be sustainable from top to bottom, or in this case, from its rainwater-collection systemto its garden. The dormitory is bringing new meaning to the concept of living “green” at college. At Warren Wilson College, a biological science school with fewer than 1,000 students, the sustainability drive came from the student body. The EcoDorm concept was presented ten years ago by two students; a planning committee firstly suggested using building materials like corncob. Although the architects disagreed with the idea, they came up with other creative solutions: Wood siding was taken from the trees grown in the school yard that were suffering from a disease, and rainwater was collected in an old railway car and pumped back into the house to clean the toilets. All in all, the dorm uses nearly two-thirds less electricity than a similar-sized traditional building would. But even the most sustainable homes need continued efforts from its livers. And in the case of EcoDorm, students live by their words. Most also tak e advantage of the dorm’s bio-garden, planting and harvesting fruits and vegetables. “I didn’t have to worry about paper towels being wasted or feel bad about drying my clothes outside,” Jeremy Lekich, the dorm’s gardener, said. “Basically, it has made my life easier.”13. We can learn from the text that the EcoDorm in the US .A. offers students the chances to have a natural living at collegeB. was firstly built by two college studentsC. was designed for saving building materialsD. is only applicable in few schools14. The second paragraph is mainly about .A. where the EcoDorm was builtB. when the EcoDorm got its nameC. what the EcoDorm is made ofD. how the concept of EcoDorm started15. What can be inferred from the text?A. A long-term development calls for students’ efforts.B. Students’ ideas should be encouraged at college.C. Green living is a new trend at American colleges.D. Students can learn to protect the environment through practice.E.The jobs of the future have not yet been invented. 16 By helping them develop classicskills that will serve them well no matter what the future holds.I. CuriosityYour children need to be deeply curious. 17 Ask kids, “What ingredients (配料)can we add to make these pancak es even better next time?” and then try them out. Did those ingredients make the pancakes better? What could we try next time?II. CreativityTrue creativity is the ability to take something existing and create something new from it. 18 There are a dozen different things you can do with them. Experimenting with materials to create something new can go a long way in helping them develop their creativity.III. Personal skillsUnderstanding how others feel can be a challenge for kids. We know what’s going on inside our own head, but what about others? Being able to read people helps kid from misreading a situation and jumping to false conclusions. 19 “Why do you think she’s crying?” “Can you tell how that man is feeling by looking at his face?” “If someon e were to do that to you, how would you feel?”VI. Self Expression20 There are many ways to express thoughts and ideas ---- music, acting, drawing, building, photography. You may find that your child is attracted by one more than another.A. Encourage kids to cook with you.B. And we can’t forget science education.C. We can give kids chances to think about materials in new ways.D. We can do this in real life or ask questions about characters in stories.E. Gardening is another great activity for helping kids develop this skill.F. ( A )How much physical activity do you get?As a teenager, physical activity is important, not just for your future health but for looking and feeling your best now.How active you are early in life may affect how ableminded you are late in life. That was the findi ng of a new study of cognitive impairment (认知障碍),or a loss in mental abilities. The study involved more than nine thousand women in the United States over the age of sixtyfive. They answered questions about their level of physical activity as teenagers and at age thirty, fifty and late in life.Laura Middleton of the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Canada led the ura Middleton said,“People who were physically active on a regular basis had lower risk of cognitive impairments in late life. And it seemed that teenage physical activity was particularly important in terms of the prevention of cognitive impairments.〞Laura Middleton noted two longlasting effects that physical activity can have on teenagers.Exercise could help strengthen the blood vessels(血管) that carry blood and oxygen to the brain. Also, physical activity is known to improve the brain’s ability to repair itself. Moreover, she noted that doing exercise is good for psychological development. The study is in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.Women who said they were physically active even once a week showed less cognitive impairment as measured by a test. There was not a strong link between the amount of physical activity and the seriousness of impairment. But the link was strongest among those who were active as teenagers.Laura Middleton says other studies of exercise and cognitive skills have found a stronger link in women than in men.Still, she says, there is no reason to suggest that the finding about teenage physical activity should not apply to men as well.21.The passage mainly talks about the fact that ______.A.women are generally more active than menB.teenagers today are involved in more physical activityC.people’s level of physical activity varies at different agesD.physical activity in teens is linked to mental skills in late life22.What do we know about the study?( )A.People surveyed are all physically active.B.It was of interest to a group of readers, and I considered doing a book review or discussing the life of a wellknown literary figure, but I thought I would break with tradition today in order to share some anecdotes from the life of a man, who, like you, enjoyed reading. In spite of the fact that Thomas Alva Edison had almost no formal education, spending only three months in school, his mother taught him to read at quite an early age.Between the ages of nine and twelve,he read such difficult volumes as Homers’History of England,Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, and Neon’s Principia. As a young man,Mr. Edison decided to read all of the books in the Detroit public library, systematically(系统地) shelf by shelf. After finishing the first fifteen feet,he decided to reconsider the task.A few years later,in Cincinnati, his love for reading almost cost him his life.Having stayed at the library until very late,Mr. Edison started home with a pile of old magazines for which he had paid the large sum of two dollars.Suspecting that he might be a thief,a policeman ordered him to stop. But Mr. Edison was too deaf to hear the order. The policeman shot, and missed. In addition to the electric light,Thomas Edison is known for inventing the photograph, microphone, mimeograph, electric storage battery, and photographic film.Whenever he was paid for an invention,he used the money for his two loves—more experiments and more books.A friend described Edison’s life in those busy days:“I went to visit Tom,〞he said,“and I found him sitting behind a pile of books five feet high which he had ordered from New York,London, and Paris. He studied them night and day, eating at his desk and sleeping in his chair. In six weeks he had read all of the books and had performed more than two thousand experiments using the formulas that he had studied.〞25.The reason why the speaker chose to talk about Thomas Edison is that ______.A.he was a wellknown scientistB.he was a famous literary figureC.he liked to for the land of warmth and vitamin C(维生素C), thinking of beaches and orange trees. When we touched down to blue skies and warm air, I sent up a small prayer of gratefulness. Swimming pools, wine tasting, and pink sunsets(at normal evening hours, not 4 in the afternoon) filled the weekend, but the best part- particularly to my taste, dulled by months of cold- weather root vegetables- was a 7 a.m. adventure to the Sarasota farmers’ market that proved to be more than worth the early wake-up call. The market, which was founded in 1979, sets up its tents every Saturday from 7:00 am to 1 p.m, rain or shine, along North Lemon and State streets. Baskets of perfect red strawberries, the red-painted sides of the Java Dawg coffee truck; and most of all, the tomatoes: amazing, large, soft and round red tomatoes. Disappointed by many a broken, vine-ripened(蔓上成熟的) promise, I’ve refused to buy winter tomatoes for years. No matter how attractive they look in the store, once I get them home they’re unfailingly dry, hard, and tasteless. But I homed in, with uncertainty, on one particular table at the Brown’s Grove Farm’s stand, full of fresh and soft tomatoes the size of my fist. These were the real deal- and at that moment, I realized that the best part of Sarasota in winter was going to be eating things that back home in New York I wouldn’t be experiencing again for months. Delighted as I was by the tomatoes in sight, my happiness deepened when I learned that Brown’s Grove Farm is one of the suppliers for Jack Dusty, a newly opened restaurant at the Sarasota Ritz Carlton, where- luckily for me- I was planning to have dinner that very night. Without even seeing the menu, I knew I’d be ordering every tomato on it. 4. What did the author think of her winter life in New York? A. Exciting. B. Boring. C. Relaxing. D. Annoying. 5. What made the author’s getting up late early worthwhile? A. Having a swim. B. Breathing in fresh air. C. Walking in the morning sun. D. Visiting a local farmer’s market. 6. What can we learn about tomatoes sold in New York in winter? A. They are soft. B. They look nice. C. They taste great. D. They are juicy. 7. What was the author going to that evening? A. Go to a farm. B. Check into a hotel. C. Eat in a restaurant. D. Buy fresh vegatables.
