English is very different from Chinese and I get confused a lot.First of all, the alphabet is super weird! We have an alphabet song we sing to learn the letters, but they don't really make sense to me. Like, why is "A" for apple? Apples are red, so "A" should be for red things. And "B" is for ball? Balls can be many different colors. I don't get why each letter is matched with a random word that starts with that letter. Couldn't we just learn the letters first before trying to remember words?The spelling is also incredibly tricky. English words don't follow any rules for how they are spelled. In Chinese, you can pretty much sound out how to say any new word if you know the characters. But English has words like "tough" where the "gh" is just totally silent. Why even include those letters if you don't say them? It's like a cruel joke.Then you have words that sound exactly the same but are spelled differently for some reason, like "bear" and "bare." How are new students supposed to keep all that straight? I once wroteabout a "bare" in the forest and got it marked wrong because apparently I meant "bear." This happened with other words too - "wood" and "would," "plain" and "plane," "night" and "knight." It makes no sense at all.Speaking of not making sense, can we talk about pronunciation? How come "read" for the present tense rhymes with "red," but then when you switch to the past tense it becomes "read" reaming with "seed?" Whose ridiculous idea was that?! I can never remember which words change their vowel sounds for the past tense. Half the time, I accidentally say the present tense version for both.Don't even get me started on words like "nightingale" or "debris" where the letters are doing crazy things. It's anarchy!Then there are words that are spelled the same but have multiple meanings based on nothing. Like "bear" can mean the animal or to carry something. "Buck" can be a deer or money. How does that make any sense? We have to memorize everysingle definition for every single word, otherwise we get it wrong on tests.I'm also still pretty confused about when to use "a" versus "an" before words. Is it just for vowels? But then why do we say "an hour" when "hour" starts with a consonant sound? My brain melts trying to figure it out. Let's just pick one articland stick with it.Don't even get me started on verb tenses. First there's past, present and future - but then there are MULTIPLE WAYS to say each one?? You've got simple past like "I went," but then also past participle like "I have gone" and past perfect like "I had gone" and.....why Why can't we just have one past tense? It's too much to remember which version to use when.And that's not even including all the continuous tenses like "I am going", "I was going", etc. or ther modals like"should/could/would/might." It never ends! Chinese keeps things nice and simple - one tense to learn and you're done. But English has infinite variations and exceptions. You can't just wake up one day and be like "Okay, today I'll only use present participle constructions." That would be madness!Then you have words that are spelled the same but are a different part of speech with different meanings, like "preview"the noun versus "preview" the verb. You can't make assumptions or you get it wrong. We have to basically re-learn every new definition of each word as a separate thing.I'm also pretty lost on when to use "don't" or "doesn't." If I'm talking about myself, I think I say "I don't" but then if I'm talking about my friend, do I say "He don't" or "He doesn't?" These subjects and objects are too complicated! There are too many exceptions to remember.The articles are also really hard. When do you use "a" versus "an" versus "the"? Half the time my teacher marks me wrong and tells me I used the wrong one. It doesn't make sense! Couldn't we just get rid of articles altogether? That would make things easier.Prepositions are another nightmare - memorizing which preposition to use for things like times/dates/locations/etc. I can never get it right. I mix up "at", "on", "in" constantly. And you can't just learn them by the preposition because the rules change depending on if it's a time, place, etc. My head spins.Then there are words that are spelled the same but pronounced differently, like "polish" for the nationality versus "polish" meaning to shine something. How are we supposed to know which version to say when we're reading it for the firsttime?? We just have to memorize both pronunciations separately for every word? That's insanity!I'm also never sure when I should be using plurals or keeping things singular. Like if I'm talking about "friends", should I say "My friends don't have any money" or "My friends doesn't have any money"? It changes based on whether you think of the group as one entity or many individuals, but there's no consistent rule for it.Punctuation is another issue entirely. When do you use periods? Commas? Semi-colons? Colons? Apostrophes for its/it's? There are so many rules and different use cases. We just skim over them quickly in class but I can never remember which punctuation to use when. I just kind of guess and hope for the best.Like, where do you even PUT the punctuation when you're writing dialogue? Does the comma go inside the quotation marks? Outside? What about question marks? Exclamation points? And don't even get me started on properly nesting sets of quotation marks for quoted speech within quoted speech. It's a jumbled mess that makes no sense!Overall, I'm feeling pretty hopeless about this English learning journey. It seems absolutely impossible to ever masterall the crazy rules, inconsistencies, irregularities and exceptions.
