More than 4 in 10 cancers — 600,000 in the UK alone — could be prevented if people led healthier lives, say experts. The population of the UK is about 63,000,000. Latest figures from Cancer Research UK show smoking is the biggest avoidable risk factor, followed by unhealthy diets. The charity advises people to live healthily, limit alcohol intake and do regular exercise. According to the figures from 2007 to 2011, more than 300,000 cases of cancer recorded were linked to smoking. A further 145,000 were linked to unhealthy diets containing too much processed food. Obesity contributed to 88,000 cases and alcohol to 62,200. Sun damage to the skin and physical inactivity were also contributing factors. Professor Max Parkin, a Cancer Research UK statistician, says, “There's now little doubt that certain lifestyle choices can have a big influence on cancer risk, with research around the world all pointing to the same key risk factors.” “Of course everyone wants to enjoy some extra treats during the Christmas holidays so we don't want to ban beef pies and wine but it's a good time to think about taking up some healthy habits.” “Leading a healthy lifestyle can't guarantee someone won't get cancer but we can stack the odds in our favour by taking positive steps.” Public Health England says a healthy lifestyle can play an important role in reducing cancer risk. It says campaigns such as Smokefree, Dry January and Change4Life Sugar Swaps all aim to raise public awareness. It's important that we not only continue to make progress in noticing cancer earlier and improving treatments, but helping people understand how they can reduce their risk of developing cancer in the first place remains important in dealing with cancer. 4.Which of the following is the third biggest avoidable cancer factor? A.Obesity. B.Alcohol intake. C.Unhealthy diets. D.Physical inactivity. 5.According to Professor Max Parkin, ________. A.it's OK to drink wine during festivals B.the causes of cancer are still unclear now

In spite of a weekend of warnings, more than 50 000 computers at about 100 places around the world have been attacked by the virus, computer security experts said on Monday. The virus began to show up last Friday and spread rapidly on Monday by making computers fire off dozens of infected(被传染的)e-mails. Although the virus causes no serious damage to a computer, its effect was far reaching. To make matters worse,a similar virus called “Papa” was discovered on Monday. Papa is programmed to send out even more infected e-mails than Melissa. The Melissa virus comes in the form of an e-mail,usually containing the subject line“Important Message”. It appears to be fr om a friend. The body of the e-mail message says,“Here is that document you asked for...,don’t show it to anyone else.” Attached(附)to the message is a document file.Once the user opens that file, the virus digs into the user’s address book and sends infected documents to the first 50 addresses. E-mails from the Papa virus include an attachedspreadsheet(电子数据文件)file. When the user opens that file, the virus sends 60 infected e-mails.The reason why this is spreading so fast is that you are getting it from people you know. You should never open documents or attachments from people you don’t know. People who get an unexpected e-mail with the “important message” subject line should delete it immediately and not open the message.28. In winter it could be very nasty because ofstrong winds and sea spray. In fact, when a gale was blowing, Norah and her husband got used to sleeping in a small room downstairs, because their bedroom upstairs, which faced the gales, had a very big window, and they were afraid that an extra violent gust might break it and blow pieces of broken glass over them. Also, the salt spray from the sea put an end to many of the colourful plants Norah planted in her garden. She tried putting up a fence to protect them, but the wind just hit it, went up over the top and then down the other side, so in the end she filled the garden with trees and bushes that liked salt. But most of the summer Norah enjoyed her cottage and garden very much. At weekends she could sit out of doors in the sun, looking at the beautiful view, with interesting ships and boats passing by, and she could very easily cycle down to the sea for a swim. Now, Norah and her husband had plenty of friends and relations. In the summer lots of them used to come to enjoy the beautiful place, and in the end it really became quite annoying for Norah and her husband. When they were at home, they found friends and relations arriving, expecting to be given unlimited drinks and meals, and to sit in the sun for hours, talking as if Norah and her husband had nothing else to do but entertain and listen to them. This went on for several years. Norah did not wish to appear rude by refusing to let her friends and relations in, but on the other hand, she was getting tired every summer. Then one day Norah was complaining about this to her hairdresser while she was doing her hair. “You’re disturbed by too many uninvited guests, are you?” said the hairdresser. “Why don’t you try my way of escaping?”“What’s that?” asked Norah.“Well,” the hairdresser answered, “when the bell rings, I put on my coat and take my shopping bag. By looking at these changes, we can have a deeper understanding of the language, from the present day back to its ancient roots. While modern English shares many similar words with romance languages(罗曼斯语), like French and Spanish, most of those words were not originally part of it. Instead, they started coming into the language with the Norman invasion of England in 1066. When the French-speaking Normans conquered(征服) England and became its ruling class, they brought their speech with them, adding a large number of French and Latin words to the English language formerly spoken there. The English used in Beowulf(《贝奥武夫》) probably doesn't look very familiar, but it might be more recognizable if you know some German. That's because Old English belongs to the Germanic language family, first brought to the British Isles(不列颠群岛) in the 5th and 6th centuries by the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. The language they spoke would become known as Anglo-Saxon. Viking invaders(维京侵略者) in the 8th to 11th centuriesadded more borrowings from Old Norse(古斯堪的那维亚语) into the mix.It may be hard to see the roots of modern English underneath all the words borrowed from French, Latin, Old Norse and other languages. But the amazing fact is that nearly 3 billion people around the world, many of whom cannot understand each other, are speaking the same words shaped by 6000 years of history.1. Thanksgiving had been celebrated only two days before. Since it was a holiday weekend I had been on the phone with Greg the night before many times. His dad didn’t want him to come over because of the holiday. I guess he finally wore him down and he called and said “I can stay.” So, my mom, brother, and I went to pick him up. He was always smiling. The complete opposite of my shy self, Greg was always the life of the party. We got two large pizzas that Friday night. I’ve never known anyone in my entire life who loved to eat more than Greg. That’s the way he was though. He was just enjoying life. And if itmeant gaining weight or whatever, so be it. He would sit back and put his hands on his belly and just laugh. We (Greg, David, and I) did so many fun things together and had such great times. Things we should have done and things we shouldn’t have done, I’ll “Never” forget. On Saturday morning Dad took us out for breakfast. We all finished eating and followed my Dad up to the cashier. Greg asked Dad if he could have a candy bar. I looked at Greg shaking my head. He just laughed. After breakfast, Father took us to my Mom’s house. When we got out at Mom’s house there was no one home. So, one of us grabbed a big wheel and rode it down the steep driveway into the street. Just boys being boys. Greg and I did it several times until the last time. The car hit him in the head, knocking him around 75-100 yards. My brother and I both ran screaming just yelling for help and crying. One of the neighbors called 911.I was in shock. That day was forever etched (铭刻) into our memories. It still hurts to think about it. Wishing we could have grown old together. Wondering how it would have been. I’m sure IT WOULD HA VE BEEN GREAT.79. The bear was thin and small, moving aimlessly.Just a few minutes later, I heard my daughter shouting, “Dad! The bear is right behind us!” An aggressive bear will usually rush forward to frighten away its enemy but would suddenly stop at the last minute. This one was silent and its ears pinned back—the sign of an animal that is going in for the kill. And it was a cold April day. The bear behaved abnormally, probably because of hunger.I held my camera tripod (三脚架) in both hands to form a barrier as the bear rushed into me. Its huge head was level with my chest and shoulders, and the tripod stuck across its mouth. It bit down and I found myself supporting its weight. I knew I would not be able to hold it for long.Even so, this was a fight I had to win: I was all that stood between the bear and my family, who would stand little chance of running faster than a brown bear. The bear hit at the camera, cutting it off the tripod. I raised my left arm to protect my face; the beast held tightly on the tripod and pressed it into my side. My arm could not move, and I sensed that my bones were going to break.Drawing back my free hand, I struck the bear as hard as I could for five to six times. The bear opened its mouth and I grasped its fur, trying to push it away. I was actually wrestling (扭打) with the bear at this point. Then, as suddenly as it had begun, the fight ended. The bear moved back toward the forest, before returning for another attack. The first time I felt panic. Apparently satisfied that we caused no further threat, the bear moved off, destroying a fence as it went. My arm was injured, but the outcome for us could hardly have been better. I’m proud that my family remained clear-headed when panic could have led to a very different outcome.83. When did the bear finally go away?A. After it felt safe.B. After it got injured.C.
