When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of
my life. I was a total outsider, bullied (欺凌) at school. I felt completely alone in my small town.
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into a passion for
helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater
purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I
realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help
them feel less alone.
Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books.
The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to
become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books
helped me.
After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the
optimistic, positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream career, one I thought was only
possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen
novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every
single day.
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change
someone's life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily
kindness, you become an architect of positive change.
(1)What was the author's life like when he was 12?

A.He was inspired by his teacher.
B.He could pass positive energy to readers.

D.He found he had a talent for writing.
(4)What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph?
A.Say 'no' to bullies bravely.
B.Make positive changes in their lives.
C.Treat others with kindness in daily life. D.Learn to care more about others' feelings.

When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen
years were going to be the worst years of my life.”
But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I
turned my problem into a passion for helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness in the
face of so much anger made me feel like my life had a greater purpose.”
The kindness they offered me with their books saved
my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would
help other teenagers the way those books helped me.”
Even small acts of kindness can change someone's
life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you
become an architect of positive change.”

Rich countries are racing to dematerialise payments. They need to do more to prepare for the
side-effects.
For the past 3,000 years, when people thought of money they thought of cash. Over the past
decade, however, digital payments have taken off— tapping your plastic on a terminal or swiping
a smartphone has become normal. Now this revolution is about to turn cash into an endangered
species in some rich economies. That will make the economy more efficient—but it also causes
new problems that could hold back the transition(转型).
Countries are removing cash at varying speeds. In Sweden the number of retail cash
transaction per person has fallen by 80% in the past ten years. America is perhaps a decade
behind. Outside the rich world, cash is still king. But even there its leading role is being

I've loved my mother's desk since I was just tall enough to see above the top of it as mother sat
writing letters. Standing by her chair, looking at the ink bottle, pens, and white paper, I thought
that the act of writing is the coolest thing in the world.
Years later, during her final illness, my mother kept different things for my sister and my
brother.“ But the desk,” She said, “it's for Helen.”
Although I knew she loved me and she only showed it in action, I wanted heart-to-heart talks
between mother and daughter. But they never happened. And a gulf opened between us. I was
“too emotional (易动感情的)”,but she lived “on the surface”.
I had my own family later. I loved my mother and thanked her for our happy family. I wrote to

Once there was a little stream (小溪). It flowed down from a high mountain and travelled
through many villages and forests. At last it reached a desert. “I went through so many difficulties.
I should have no problem crossing the desert, she thought. As she started, she found herself
slowly disappearing into the sand. After many tries, she still failed. “Maybe I can't reach the
ocean,” she said sadly to herself.
At this time, a deep voice said, “If a breeze (微风) can cross the desert, so can a stream.” It
was the voice of the desert. But the little stream answered, “That's because a breeze can fly, but I
cannot.”
“That's because you can’t give up what you are. Let yourself evaporate (蒸发) into the
breeze, and it can take you across,” said the desert. “Give up what I am now? No! No!” The little

That cold January night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was, walking
home at one in the morning after a tiring practice at the theatre. With opening night only a week
away, I was still learning my lines. I was having trouble dealing with my part-time job at the bank
and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about giving up both
acting and San Francisco. City life had become too much for me.
As I walked down empty streets under tall buildings, I felt very small and cold. I began running,
both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers (抢劫犯). Very few people
were still out except a few sad-looking homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my apartment (公寓房间), I heard a sound behind me. I turned quickly,

As he was working, a couple of boys stopped by to watch. “What are you doing?” asked one of
the visitors. “I want to dig a deep hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly.

I arrived at my mother's home for our Saturday family dinner. The smells of food flew over from
the kitchen. My mother was pulling out quilt after quilt from the boxes, proudly showing me their
beauties. I knew they were all made herself. She was preparing for a quilt show on TV. When we
began to fold and put them back into the boxes, I noticed something at the bottom of one box. I
pulled it out.
"What's this?" I asked.
"Oh?" Mom said, "That's Mama's quilt."
I spread the quilt. It looked as if a group of school children had made the pieces together.
"Grandmother made this?" I asked in surprise. My grandmother was a master at making quilts.
This certainly didn't look like any of the quilts she had made.
"Yes, right before she died. I brought it home with me last year and made some changes," Mom

This afternoon, when I was looking for a self-improvement(自我修养) book, I found an aged
folder(文件夹).In this folder, there were some of the examination papers I'd taken during my
pre-university days. They were on economics(经济学), a subject that I didn't really like much
then.
I laughed at the silly mistakes I made as I looked through the papers. And memories of the past
came to my mind. I saw myself sitting at one of the study tables, working hard for some of my life
goals. Back then, it was popular for most students to set life goals, because they thought it was
most important.
It was during those times that I first started to set goals for myself. I didn't know much about
goal setting then. I didn't use any goal tracking(跟踪) tools, either. All I knew was that I had to
