性别反转是生物种群为延续后代对生存环境的一种保护性反应，是很自然的事情，决非什么“不祥之兆”或其他迷信的东西。
③大家知道，鸡和鸭都是相当高等的雌雄异体动物，只有通过雌雄交配才能繁育后代。
在自然的种群中，雄性与雌性的数量是有一定比例的，这种比例是适合它们种群延续的需要。
在人为的环境中，情况就不一样了。
例如蛋鸭场，为了要蛋，只养母鸭；而公鸭食量很大，又不生蛋，养它们是划不来的，故养鸭场一般便忽略了对公鸭的养殖。
也就是说，人为条件违背了鸭群的生态规律。
这时，鸭群的固有规律就会起作用，以实现其种群的延续。

正好，母鸭体内左侧有一个发达的卵巢（产蛋用的），右侧还有一个很不发达的雄性性腺。
如果鸭群中有相当比例的公鸭，公鸭分泌的雄性荷尔蒙化学物质就会抑制母鸭体右侧性腺的发育；相反，当鸭群中缺少公鸭时，就没有足够的雄性荷尔蒙来抑制母鸭的这种性腺的发育，其中一些身强力壮的母鸭，体内的右侧性腺就会发育起来，产生大量的雄性荷尔蒙。
雄性荷尔蒙就会抑制母鸭正常卵巢的功能，于是，母鸭便不再产蛋，且羽毛逐渐变成公鸭的模样。
另外，有时候母鸭或母鸡的卵巢发生病变，雌性激素的分泌受到抑制，也会促使右侧性腺发育起来而变成雄性。
鸡鸭是我们接触的动物，一旦发生这种性别反转比较容易察觉到。
