Seeking to reduce the amount of garbage in the city, Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang Province, is experimenting with a measure to ‘name and shame’ those who fail to put garbage in the right place.
At the Dongpinggang munity on Hubing Road, people should mark their household numbers on garbage bags before throwing them away, and there are now inspectors staying beside the dustbins, evaluating the
classification of garbage.
The regulations on garbage classification require people to put garbage into four separate bins labeled recyclable waste, harmful waste, kitchen waste and other waste. A total of 843 residential(住宅区的) areas, about 55 percent of the city’s total, have adopted this measure.
The results of the evaluation are posted in a diagram near the dustbins. The households which have correctly sorted more than 80 percent of their garbage will be
marked in green,those with less than 40 percent garbage correctly sorted are marked in red and the rest in yellow.

Yuck!Recycling helps cut down on all that waste by allowing materials like plastic, glass, paper and metal to be reused instead of ending up in landfills and polluting the air and water. But in order for recycling to work, we have to sort our recyclables properly into different bins – one for plastic, one for glass, one for paper, and so on.At first, I'll admit it seemed like a lot of extra work. My family was just tossing everything into the same garbage can like we always did. But Ms. Roberts showed us these really disturbingpictures of what happens at the landfills and garbage islands in the ocean. Plastic bottles, cans, and bags were everywhere, hurting animals and making a terrible mess. It was so sad!That's when I decided something had to be done. I went home and talked to my parents about having separate recycling bins in our house for plastics, paper, glass and metal. At first they were a little hesitant about the extra work, but when I showed them the pictures from class, they agreed it was important.Setting up the bins and sorting our recycling wasn't as hard as we thought it would be. We watched some videos online to learn what items go in what bin. Did you know that plastic bottles have a little recycling number on the bottom to show what type of plastic they are? Looking for those numbers helped me get the hang of sorting pretty quickly.Once we got in the habit, it started becoming like second nature. My little sister even turned it into a game, having competitions to see who could get the most items in the right bins. My dad joked that we were becoming "garbage gurus"!But we didn't want to stop there. Our neighborhood didn't have a good system for recycling pickup like they do in some other towns. Most people were still just tossing all their garbageinto one big can. We knew if everyone recycled properly, it could make a huge difference for the environment.That's when I had the idea to start a Recycling Club at my school. With Ms. Roberts' help, I gave a presentation to my class about the importance of sorting recyclables. I taught them what I had learned about the different types of plastics, metals and papers. A bunch of kids were really interested and wanted to join. We set up bins for each type of recyclable in our classroom and cafeteria. Every Friday we had a "Sort-It Day" where we collected and sorted all the recyclables from the school.It was amazing to see how much material we were able to divert from the landfill! In just a couple of months, our little club had sorted thousands of bottles, cans, and papers. Seeing that huge pile of items that would now be recycled instead of becoming trash gave me a really good feeling inside.Word started spreading about our Recycling Club, and soon other classrooms were asking to join. We had enough student interest to expand to the whole school! The principal loved our idea and even got the custodians involved to help with collection. By the end of the year, Oakwood Elementary was officially a recycling school.But I didn't want it to stop there. Our town clearly needed better recycling systems and more education about sorting recyclables properly. So I decided to take our club to the next level by organizing volunteer recycling events in our neighborhood.This weekend is our first big community event. We're calling it "Recycle-Rama!" and we've been handing out flyers and putting up signs all over town. On Saturday morning, my friends and I will be going door-to-door, offering to collect neighbors' recycling bins. We'll have a team sorting everything into the right categories at the community center. Anybody who wants to can come join us and learn about how to recycle properly.I'm so excited to see how much of an impact we can make in just one morning! Imagine how much recyclable material we can divert from the landfill with everyone's help. We'll be sorting plastic containers, bottles, aluminum cans, paperboard, newspaper and even gently used clothing to be donated. At the end, we'll display everything we collected to show people how much waste we prevented. I can't wait!This is just the beginning though. Our club has huge plans to keep teaching people about recycling and do more community events. We're already talking about ideas like a recycled artcontest, a tour of a recycling facility, and a park cleanup day.
