(2018·东北三省四市模拟)On April 14th, 2010, my entire life changed in an instant. One moment I was joyfully riding through the sunshine. The next moment, metal, flesh and bones were spreading against the pavement in a thunderous crash. Another cyclist, biking carelessly, had cut me off and sent me supermanning toward oncoming traffic. As if to symbolize the accident that had hit my life, another disaster also occurred on April 14th, 2010. It cost the airline industry $ 1.7 billion. Ten million travelers were stuck for days. Economics all over the world were disturbed. This was the eruption of Eyjafjallajokull, one of Iceland’s many volcanoes. However, volcanoes are not all bad. In fact, they are necessary. They are responsible for the birth of new earth, and for the creation of rich soil. This eruption gave off 0.15 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere daily. But cancelling 48% of the world’s flight travel saved about 2.8 million tons of CO2 from entering the atmosphere, temporarily decreasing our carbon footprint. Similarly, the accident had badly affected my emotion but it also allowed me to look more closely inside myself and discover things about myself I would never have realized. I learned how not to judge myself for my new limitations. In 1973, another Icelandic volcano, Eldfell, broke out. Icelanders decided to bomb it with cold water until it froze and chose a different path. After their plan worked, they used the geothermal(地热的) energy for the next 15 years to heat their homes. A good example of life bringing lemons, and making lemonade! One must move on from misfortunes, focusing only on the present moment and being hopeful for the future. I ran from April 14th, 2010, to every kind of escape. Eventually I ended up in university for a newfound love in Earth sciences. 【解题导语】 作者把自己遭遇突发事件和火山爆发这种自然灾害进行类比,说明遭遇到不幸也有好处,面对现实情况要乐观积极. 1.What happened to the writer on April 14th, 2010? Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·江西赣中南五校联考)In its early history,Chicago had floods frequently, especially in the spring, making the streets so muddy that people, horses and carts got stuck. An old joke that was popular at the time went like this:A man is stuck up to his waist in a muddy Chicago street.Asked if he needs help,he replies,“No,thanks.I’ve got a good horse under me.”The city planner decided to build an underground drainage(排水) system, but there simply wasn’t enough difference between the height of the ground level and the water level. The only two options were to lower the Chicago River or raise the city.An engineer named Ellis Chesbrough convinced the city that it had no choice but to build the pipes above ground and then cover them with dirt. This raised the level of the city’s streets by as much as 12 feet. This of course created a new problem:dirt practically buried the first floors of every building in Chicago.Building owners were faced with a choice:either change the first floors of their buildings into basements, and the second stories into mainfloors,or hoist(吊起) the entire buildings to meet the new street level.Small woodframe buildings could be lifted fairly easily. But what about large, heavy structures like the Tremont Hotel, which was a sixstory brick building? That’s where George Pullman came in.He had developed some housemoving skills successfully. To lift a big structure like the Tremont Hotel,Pullman would place thousands of jackscrews(螺旋千斤顶) beneath the building’s foundation. One man was assigned to operate each section of roughly 10 jackscrews. At Pullman’s sign each man turned his jackscrews by the same amount at the same time, thereby raising the building slowly and evenly.Astonishingly, the Tremont Hotel stayed open during the entire operation, and many of its guests didn’t even notice anything was happening. Some people like to say that every problem has a solution. But in Chicago’s early history, every engineering solution seemed to create a new problem. Now that Chicago’s waste water was draining efficiently into the Chicago River, the city’s next step was to clean the polluted river.【解题导语】本文主要介绍了芝加哥为了应对洪水泛滥的问题而实行了一些解决方案的故事。

Ⅰ阅读理解A(2018·太原模拟)Opera is an art form that celebrates the human voice. No other art form creates excitement and moves the heart in the way that opera does, especially when performed by a great singer. Opera is an important part of the Western classical music tradition. It uses music, words, and actions to bring a dramatic story to life. Opera started in Italy at the end of the 16th century and later became popular throughout Europe. Over the years, it has responded to various musicals. In recent decades, much wider audiences have been introduced to opera through modern recording technology. Some singers have become celebrities thanks to performing on radio, on TV, and in the cinema. However, in recent years, opera has been facing serious challenges. One current challenge to opera is economics. The shortage of money raises the broader question of how much should be paid to support opera singers and other artists. Society seems to accept the large salaries paid to business managers and the multi-million-dollar contracts given to sports athletes. But what about opera singers? Somehow, people have the idea that artists can be creative only if they suffer in poverty, but this is unrealistic. If artists, including opera singers, lack the support they need, valuable talent is wasted. Not only the shortage of money, but also the way money is managed in the opera world has led to hardships. Principal singers are generally paid performance fees once they complete a show. They typically receive nothing during the many weeks of rehearsal(排练) before a show starts.Another problem faced by opera is how to meet the demands of audiences who are influenced by popular entertainment. Pop singers are often judged as much on the basis of how they look as how they sound. These demands may be unrealistic and possibly harmful. Opera singers simply cannot make a sound big enough to fill a large theater or concert hall without a microphone if their body weight is too low. Emphasizing physical appearance over singing ability may cause audiences to miss out on the human voice at its best. There are no easy solutions to opera’s problems and there are many different opinions about the value of opera. However, every year many young people register for music courses with hopes and dreams of developing their talent in this special art form. The fact that opera has survived many obstacles and continues to attract the rising generation shows that it remains a respectable art form full of value.【解题导语】本文主要讨论了歌剧所面临的挑战和困难。

Ⅰ阅读理解(2018·江西师大附中、临川一中联考)“My neighbor doesn’t speak English, but her kindness needs no translation.”Angie Morris, an 81yearold Canadian woman who grew up in wartime Britain and now lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, was describing how her nextdoor neighbor, Ms. Wing, a 68yearold Chinese woman, voluntarily cooks meals for her every day. She called it “the ultimate home-delivery service”.Morris’s moving, firstperson narrative which was published last week by the Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail, has gone popular, with more than 24,000 online reposts.“I know what is inside the paper carrier bag,”she wrote. “A thermos with hot soup and a stainlesssteel container with a meal of rice, vegetables and either chicken, meat or shrimp, sometimes with a kind of pancake. This has become an almost daily occurrence.”Wing started her act of kindness when she learned that Morris had to undergo heart surgery. She took it upon herself to begin feeding her neighbor, even though the two women have no way of communicating verbally. Wing speaks only Mandarin, and Morris’s Mandarin is limited to ni hao(hello).“So here we are, two grandmothers a world away from where we were raised, neither of us able to speak the other’s language, but communicating one way or another(with some help from technology). The doorbell keeps ringing and there is the familiar brown paper carrier bag, handed smilingly to me by Wing,”Morris wrote.Readers and netizens around the world have been touched by this relationship that crosses national boundaries and focuses on human kindness.“You know that most people in this world just want to live a good life,”one reader commented. “I come from old Ireland, so I can tell you a thing or two about conflict. The point is, most people are very good with big hearts and want their children to grow up safe and in places like this country can offer.”【解题导语】互为邻居的两位老人温女士与安吉·莫里斯虽然语言不通无法交流,但温女士在得知莫里斯要做手术的消息后,主动为其做饭。
