It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn't show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word,to another person. That person,in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it.Then the two written statements are compared.Typically, the original message has changed. That's what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their own creative touch to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping it with their personal style.Yet those who hear it think they know. This process is also found among scholars and authors:A statement of opinion by one writer may be restated as a fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another, and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.[语篇导读] 本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了被动获得知识所存在的一个严重的问题——被告知的可能是谣言,并用现实生活中简单的事例加以说明。

In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music.Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it.And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue.Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him worldfamous and showed that jazz music could be both serious andpopular. In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition with the wellknown musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him.She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazzinfluenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life while to others it was stilly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It remains one of his most famous works.George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirtynine years old.Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages.People mourned the loss of the man and all the music he might have still written.[语篇导读] 本文是一篇人物传记,主要讲述了美国伟大的作曲家乔治·格什温的生平故事。
