All healthy people like their dinner, but their dinner is not the main object of their lives. So all healthy-minded people like making money – ought to like it and to enjoy the sensation of winning it; but the main object of their lives is not money; it is something better than money.A good soldier, for instance, mainly wishes to do his fighting well. He is glad of his pay –very properly so, and justly grumbles when you keep him ten months without it; still, his main notion of life is to win battles, not to be paid for winning them.So of doctors. They like fees no doubt –ought to like them; yet if they are brave and well educated, the entire object of their lives is not fees. They, on the whole, desire to cure the sick, and – if they are good doctors, and the choice were fairly put to them – would rather cure their patient and lose their fee than kill him and get it. And so with all other brave and rightly trained men; their work is first, their fee second, very important always, but still second. But in every nation, there is a vast class of people who are cowardly, and more or less stupid. And with these people, justas certainly the fee is first and the work second, as with brave people the work is first and the fee second. And this is no small distinction. It is the whole distinction. It is the whole distinction in a man. You cannot serve two masters; you must serve one or the other. If your work is first with you and your fee second, work is your master. Observe, then, all wise work is mainly threefold in character. It is honest, useful, and cheerful. I hardly know anything stranger than that you recognize honesty in play, and do not in work. In your lightest games you have always someone to see what you call "fair play". In boxing you must hit fair; in racing, start fair. Your watchword is fair play; your hatred, foul play. Did it ever strike you that you wanted another watchword also, fair work, and hatred also, foul work?()43.What is the main object for a well-educated,intellectual, or a brave man?A.MoneyB. HealthC. Something better than moneyD. food()44.What does “very properly so” mean?A.Very poorB. ReasonableB.Impossible D. Very good()45.If doctors are brave and well-educated, they should think______.A. their fee is firstB. Their patient is secondC. their work is firstD. both fee and work are first ()46.All wise work is mainly threefold in character, they are_____.A.honestB. usefulC. cheerfulD. A,B and C()47.What do you learn from the passage?A.All healthy-minded people like making money.B.The fee is first and work secondC.Work is something better than moneyD.Being soldiers and doctors. You will earn much money.BWith its tall buildings and crowded streets, Hong Kong is one of the last places you would expect to find a wild animal. But green sea turtles(绿甲海龟),have become regular visitor to beaches found in more peaceful peaceful of the metropolis(大都市).Over the last month, people living in Hong Kong and Hainan Province have been lucky enough to see the giant turtles lay their eggs on the beaches at night.Male turtles spend their entire lives in the sea. But every two to six years, the females swim thousands of miles from their feeding ground to lay eggs in their own birthplace.Unfortunately, few of the baby turtles survive(辛存)with only one in 1000 living into adulthood(成年).If they manage to grow big ,which takes 20 to 30 years, they can live for more than a century.Man is the main reason the turtles are dying out. The creature’s habitats are destroyed by finishing and pollution, while the turtles themselves are killed for food and leather. “Sea turtle eggs and meat saved us during Japan’s occupation(占领)of Hong Kong in World War II.”Said65-year-old resident Chan Kam-wan. But the days of eating turtle eggs have long since passed. Hong Kong banned the eating and sale of them in1976,hoping to help save the endangered(濒危的)creatures. In recent years, the government has closed beaches between June and October so the turtles can lay satellites. Through tracking the turtles, they hope to learn new ways of protecting them.Officials in Hong Kong recently finish a study on sea life in the area. They are considering setting up a sea park to protect the sea turtles from water pollution and illegal fishing.48.The purpose of writing the passage is to _________.A. call on people to protect turtlesB. tell us the living habits of turtlesC. tell us turtles travel a long way to lay eggs on the beachesD. emphasize the importance of studying turtles49.The turtles are dying out mainly because_________.A. the water where they are living is becoming worse and worseB. they can’t go with the changing conditionsC. of human activitiesD. too many of them have been killed50.Chan Kam-wan’s purpose of saying such words isto_________.A. praise turtles for its delicious tastes.B. introduce to people eating turtles has a long historyC. appreciate turtlesD. advise people not to forget that Japan was an enemy of the Chinese.51. A few old pubs have real character but many are dull and ugly. It seems that the English think it rather indecent(不像样的) for people to drink alcoholic drinks in any place where they can be seen from outside. So pubs usually not only have no tables outside, but also are so built that it is impossible for people outside to see in, or for those who are inside to see out. There are exceptions to this, but not many. Pubs are meeting places for working men after the evening meal. With pint glasses filled with beer—in Scotland the national drink is whisky—they argue about football, the races, cars. The traditional pub was a place for the men only. But things have changed, and more and more pubs are now places where men and women sit at tables, and they often provide good lunches. Most of them have a public bar, where drinks are slightlycheaper, and a saloon bar, which middle—class people usually prefer because it is more comfortable and less crowed.53.This passage mainly tells us about___________.A. drinking habits of the EnglishB. poor conditions in pubsC. what pubs are like in the UKD. why pubs are special for men54.We can infer(推断) from the text that___________.A. many of the pubs are of no characterB. you can often see people drinking outside the pubsC. you can easily see people inside the pubs from the outsidesD. people inside the pubs can see what’s happening outside55.The underlined word “regulars” in the text refers to__________.A. rules in the pubB. people who often go to the same pubC. people which have real charactersD. dull and ugly pubs56.People go to the pubs mainly because of their___________.A. whiskyB. mealsC. surroundingsD. atmosphereDWalking may be healthy exercise , but going for a stroll in Florida can often be deadly.Four of the five city areas considered(认为)the most dangerous for pedestrians(行人) are in Florida, with the Tampa region leading the list, according to a study released(公布) Thursday by the Surface Transportation Policy Project, a Washington—based environmental group that advocates(提倡) alternatives to driving.Analyzing(分析) federal data from 1997and 1998,the group found Atlanta was the second most dangerous urban area(区域) for walking, followed by three in Florida: Miami, Orlando andJack—sonville.

e.g. I have no boyfriend (to meet) and no money (to spend)( over the Christmas holiday.)
像上面的句子,我们把(to meet非谓语动词短语),(to spend非谓语动词短语),(over the Christmas holiday介宾短语)这几个枝叶减掉。
剩下的就只剩下了句子的主干I have no boyfriend and no money.(主,谓,宾)。

Which of the following is not one of the suggestions by the doctor?Passage OneQuestions 21-25 are based on the following passage. Our culture is obsessed with sleep, and the lack of it, yet many of us don't know some basic facts. As many as 35 million Americans experience chronic insomnia, and yet in 2006 only $20 million was spent on research. In the six years that author, professor and lifelong insomniac Gayle Green spent researching and writing her book "Insomniac". She learned almost all there is to know about sleep and the lack thereof. Here are five common myths about how we get our shut-eye and why:1. Humans Need Eight Hours Sleep a NightThere are many ways of sleeping and few cultures sleep in eight-hour consolidated blockslike we do. Until the industrial era, many Western Europeans divided the night into "the first sleep" and the "second sleep." They'd go to bed soon after dark, sleep for four hours then wake for an hour or two during which they'd write, pray, smoke, have sex or even visit neighbors. In fact, there's some evidence to suggest that this sleep pattern may be the one most in tune with our inherent circadian rhythms.2. Sleep Isn't Just a Bodily FunctionSleep is a biological, physiological system, akin to the cardiovascular system, the nervous system and so on. Like any other system, it is highly variable, and it wears out and gets more fragile with age. 3. Animals Don't Have Sleep ProblemsInsomnia occurs in animals and insects, too, sort of. Technically, insomnia is defined as a "complaint," and since animals can't complain, it's difficult to measure in them.4. Falling Asleep Is a Gradual Process NopeInstead, for most people, it switches on and off like a light switch. But for insomniacs andnarcoleptics, the switch doesn't work quite well. Instead they inhabit the space in betweennever entirely awake, nor entirely asleep.5. Sleeping Less Bums More CaloriesIn the short term, yes, but sleeping less probably won't help you lose weight. Lack of sleep suppresses our natural appetite-depressants, while fueling appetite-increasers, omen leading to weight gain.21. According to the talk, approximately how many Americans suffer chronic insomnia?22. Which of the following can best describe Gayle Green?23. Which of the following sleeping patterns might be the most in tune with our inherent biological system?24. According to the talk, why is it difficult to measure insomnia in animals?25. According to the talk, which of the following is true?Passage TwoQuestions 26-30 are based on the following passage.Eight-year-old children have a radically different learning strategy from twelve-year-oldsand adults. Eight-year-olds learn primarily from positive feedback, whereas negative feedback scarcely causes any alarm bells to ring. Twelve-year-olds are better able to process negative feedback, and use it to learn from their mistakes. Adults do the same, but more efficiently. Dr Eveline Crone and her colleagues from the Leiden Brain and Cognition Lab used fMRI research to compare the brains of three different age groups: children of eight to nine years, children of eleven to twelve years, and adults aged between 18 and 25 years. This three-way division had never been made before; the comparison is generally made between children and adults. Crone herself was surprised at the outcome: "We had expected that the brains of eight-year-olds would function in exactly the same way as the brains of twelve-year-olds, but maybe not quite so well. Children learn the whole time, so this new knowledge can have major consequences for people wanting to teach children: how can you best relay instructions to eight- and twelve-year-olds?" The researchers gave children of both age groups and adults aged 18 to 25 a computer task while they lay in the MRI scanner. The task required them to discover rules. If they did this correctly, a tick appeared on the screen, otherwise a cross appeared. MRI scans showed which parts of the brain were activated. These surprising results set Crone thinking. "You start to think less in terms of'good' and 'not so good'. Children of eight may well be able to learn extremely differently, only they do it in a different way."26. According to the talk, which of the following groups can best learn from their mistakes?27. What is new about Dr. Crone's research?28. What had Dr. Crone and her colleagues expected?29. Which of the following feedback can best stimulate the eight year-olds to learn?30. According to the talk, which group of people would learn and benefit most?。

Unit 2Men V.S. (against) Women男女有别PreviewYou were once involved in an intimate relationship with the opposite sex; if not, just think about your parents or other couples you are familiar with. Smart as you are, you may have noticed that no relationship can avoid frustration or conflict, no matter how hard the two involved try to understand and compromise. Given their diverse patterns of feeling, communicating, and responding, there is reason to believe that men and women belong to different species (though they are both human beings), and then everything can be explained.Text(Let)Men Go to Their Caves and Women (go to their) Talk1男女顺其自然John Gray[1] One of the biggest differences between men and women is how they cope with (deal with) stress. Men become increasingly focused and withdrawn while women become increasingly overwhelmed (defeated) and emotionally involved. At these times (At these moments), a man's needs for feeling good (良好的感觉) are different from a woman's (needs). He feels better by solving problems while she feels better by talking about problems. Not understanding and accepting these differences creates (leads to) unnecessary friction (conflict) in our relationships (marriages). Let's look at a common (常见的) example.[2] When Tom comes home, he wants to relax and unwind (=relaxed) by quietly reading the news. He is stressed (bothered) by the unsolved problems of his day and finds relief (解脱->relieve) through forgetting them.[3] His wife, Mary, also wants to relax from her stressful day. She, however, wants to find (relieve->) relief by talking about the problems of her day. The tension slowly building (strenthening累积) between them gradually becomes resentment (hatred).[4] Solving this problem for Tom and Mary depends not on how much they loved each other but on how much they understood the opposite sex. Without knowing that women really do need to talk about problems to feel better, Tom would continue to think Mary talked too much and resist listening to her. Without knowing that Tom was reading the news to feel better, Mary would feel ignored and neglected. She would persist in trying to get (make) him to talk when he didn't want to.Coping with stress on Mars2 and Venus3[5] When a Martian (火星人) gets (becomes) upset he never talks about what is bothering him. He would never burden (vt. bother) another Martian with his problem unless his friend's assistance (help) was necessary to solve the problem. Instead (On the contray) he becomes very quiet and goes to his private cave4(corner) to think about his problem, mulling it over to find a (to solve a problem<->to answer a question) solution. When he has found a solution, he feels much better and comes out of his cave.[6] If he can't find a solution to forget his problems, like (such as) reading the news or playing a game. By disengaging (release) his mind (brain) from the problems of his day, gradually he can relax. If his stress is really great it takes (needs) getting involved with something even more challenging, like (such as) racing (drving) his car, (compete->) competing in acontest, or climbing a mountain.[7] When a Venusian (woman) becomes upset (nervous) or is stressed by her day, to find relief, she seeks out (find) someone she trusts and then talks in great detail about the problems of her day. When Venusians (women) share feelings of being overwhelmed, they suddenly feel better. This is the Venusian (woman) way.Finding relief in the cave.[8] When a man is stressed he will withdraw into the cave of his mind (心灵的空间/时间:独处的时刻) and focus on solving a problem. He generally (usually) picks (choose) the most urgent problem or the most difficult. He becomes so focused (absorbed) on solving this one problem that he temporarily loses awareness of everything else. Other problems and responsibilities fade into the background (退到幕后).[9] At such times (at such moments), he becomes increasingly distant, forgetful, unresponsive, and preoccupied in his relationships. His full awareness (conscience) is not present because he is mulling (thinking) over his problem, hoping to find a solution. The more stressed he is, the more gripped (occupied聚精会神) by the problem he will be. At such times he is incapable of giving a woman the attention and feeling that she normally (usually) receives and certainly deserves. If, however, he can find a solution, instantly (immediately/ at once) he will feel much better and come out of his cave; suddenly he is available (free) for being in a relationship again.[10] However, if he cannot find a solution to his problem, then he remains (stick: n./vi.) stuck (cornered) in the cave. To get (free) unstuck (released) he is drawn to solving little problems, like (such as) reading the news, watching TV, driving his car, doing physical exercise, watching a football game, playing basketball, and (so on and) so forth. Any challenging activity that (initiate->) initially (=previously) requires only 5 percent of his mind (mental energy脑力) can assist (help) him in forgetting his problems and becoming unstuck. Then the next day he can redirect his focus to his problem with greater success (=more successfully). [be at sb.’s wit’s end]Finding relief through talking[11] When a woman is stressed she instinctively feels a need to talk about her feelings and all the possible problems that are associated with her feelings. When she begins talking she does not (priority->) prioritize the significance of any problem. If she is upset, then she is upset about it all, (no mater it is) big and small. She is not (medium) immediately concerned with (=worry about sth./ sb.) finding solutions to her problems but rather seeks relief by expressing herself and being understood. By randomly talking about her problems, she becomes less upset (nervous).[12] As a man under stress tends to (likely) focus on one problem and forget others, a woman under stress tends to expand and become overwhelmed (defeated) by all problems. By talking about all possible problems without focusing on problem solving she feels better. Through exploring her feelings in this process (过程) she gains (gets) a greater awareness (understanding) of what is really bothering her, and then suddenly she is no longer (not anymore不再) so overwhelmed.[13] To feel better, women talk about past problems, future problems, potential problems, evenwomen operate (live).self (the right to be a woman)[14] When a woman is overwhelmed (defeated) she finds relief through talking in great detail about her various problems. Gradually, if she feels she is being heard, her stress disappears. After talking about one topic she will pause and then move on to the next. In this way she continues toexpand talking about problems, worries, disappointments, and (frustrate->) frustrations. These topics need not be in any order and tend to be logically unrelated. If she feels she is not being understood, her awareness (knowledge) may expand even further, and she may become upset about more problems.[15] Just as a man who is stuck in the cave needs little problems to distract him, a woman who doesn't feel heard will need to talk about other problems that are less immediate (=urgent) to feel relief. To forget her own painful feelings she may become emotionally involved in the problems of others. In addition (Besides/ Furthermore) she may find relief through discussing the problems of her friends, talking about her problems or others' problems, talking is a natural and healthy Venusian reaction (response) to stress.Notes1. This text is excerpted (cited/ adapted) from Men are from Mars, Women are from V enus (published in May 1992), which is a book by John Gray offering (giving) many suggestions for improving husband-wife relationships by understanding style and emotional needs of the opposite gender. The book, as suggested by the title, asserts (confirm) the notion (idea/ concept) that men and women are as different as beings from other planets. Gray adopts (采用) this metaphor (暗喻) as the central theme (主题) of all his books and seminars (small lectures), likening men and women to the classical Roman god Mars and goddess Venus as ideal types.2. Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun in the Solar System. The planet is named after Mars, the Roman god of war (战神). It is also referred (called) to as the "Red Planet" because of its reddish (light red微红) appearance.3. Venus is the second-closest planet to the Sun. The planet is named after Venus, the Roman goddess of love (爱神).4. (hole) cave: it metaphorically refers to a state of situation or mind when men, under stress (压力), withdraw until they find a solution to the problem. John Gray refers to this as "retreating into their cave." In some cases they may (literate<->illiterate问文盲) literally retreat, for example, to the garage (车库/ 汽车修理厂) or spend time with friends. this is a"time-out" (隐退的时间themselves from the problems so their brains can focus on something else.5. To expect otherwise is to deny a woman her sense of self: To expect a woman to react in another way is to turn a blind eye to her value as a woman, or a human being(s).
