There was a time whe n all n ecessary kno wledge could be taught to the young by family members・ But as societies became more complex and division of labor more comm on, it was impossible for family members to teach the informatio n and skills young people needed to become useful members of the society. As the need for specialists appeared, the job of teachi ng came into being in our country, and teachi ng as a job has bee n of in creasing importa nee over the past one hun dred years. Today, we have strict rules for teachers. We hope all childre n can go to school. Many things tell us that teachi ng is in deed an ” important” job. AA.Anyone can be a teacher.B.Progress is being made.C.Teachers have abilities・D.Quality people are teachi ng the you ngFor most people learning to drive, the driving test arises ahead as a major barrier. It is also a gen era I source of conversati on whe never drivers are gathered together. There are probably more tall stories about the driving test than about any other motoring subjects; the most remarkable thing about those stories is the number of times the old ones appear again, years after they were first heard, in new and exaggerated forms. All driving examiners have had to pass a very strict selection process, followed by at least six weeks' training. In the course of this training the Department makes sure that their driving is of a consistently high standard・ Driving test cen ters are chosen with equal care .It would be nice to have centers and exami ners town by tow n. But this is just not possible, because the centers have to be at places where there is enough parki ng space for can didates (考牛)and where there are eno ugh test routes ・ Routes are carefully chosen to make sure that they are all roughly comparable-the proportion of right and left turns, hills, pedestrian (彳亍人)crossings and so on. The object of all this is to make sure, as far as possible, that all can didates in the drivi ng test have to cope with the same sort of conditi ons whether they take the test in New York or California. The work that examiners do in actually carrying out tests is checked continuously by supervising examiners. This is to make as sure as possible that every can didate for the drivi ng test has a proper and equal cha nee of showi ng the examiner; in the words of the Regulations, "that he is competent to drive without danger to and with due consideration for other users of the road.11 This is all that the examiner is concerned with. 6 7 8A.some examiners can go to occasional centers from the permanent centersB.routes and conditions have to be the same everywhereC.there has to be enough parking space for the candidates and the examinersD.not every tow n could provide eno ugh test routes close to perma nent centers9.We can judge from this passage that _____ D ___ .A.the detailed records are checked after each test by a supervising examiner6 It can be learned from the passage that ____ A ____ .A.whenever people learning to drive get together, they often talk about the driving testB.new and exaggerated stories about the test are always appearingC.there are more tall stories about the driving test than any other subjectD.the same stories about the test reappear years later7 According to the passage, driving examiners ____ C ____ .A.are trained for six weeks, then have a difficult selection interviewB.are given regular driving tests themselves by supervising examinersC.sometimes have more than six weeks1 train!ngD.are tested during the selection process to see if their driving is of a high standard8 There isn't a test center in every town because _____ D ____ .B.sometimes can didates are tested by a supervisi ng exami nerC・ it's true that some exami ners n ever pass any one on Thursday after noonsD. exami ners are only con cer ned with a can didate's ability to drive10.It can be inferred from this passage that ____ A ____ .A.test routes have roughly the same conditions everywhereB.candidate drivers pass the testC・ all can didates are treated equally by the exami ners duri ng the testD. some test cen ters do not have eno ugh parking spaceYou must face the fact that in your in most heart you hate the thought of movi ng. It is easiest not to leave the rooms where your children passed through their wonderful childhood and annoying tee ns to a frie ndly but slightly dista nt maturity. Until, sudde nly one day, the di st a nee is absolute and they are grown up and gone. Then you find yourself living in too large a house, which consumes in its maintenance too much energy and money・When we found ourselves in this situation a few years ago, we determined to move while we still had the st re ngth and before the emotional ties that the old house had wrapped around us became too powerful to be broken. Move while you can! But be sure you really want to, and do not move too often. It is an exhausting process. Your first task is to find a house that will suit you. It must be smaller, quieter, easier to run, and more conveniently placed for transport< Not so small, though, that it will not have room for your largest pieces of furniture, and located not too far from the neighborhood where so many friendships have been built up. At last we found one: a late Victorian cottage, in a street where the houses, all small, range from late 18th to mid 20th cen tury. It was n ear eno ugh to where we wan ted to live .It had no baseme nt (底下层)'which was a great convenience for aging legs; there were only two floors: one for ourselves and one where friends, children, and grandchildren could spread themselves when they came to stay・ Each floor had two rooms. Kemp began his collection in 1952 with a 1930 Bulldog Mack which he bought for only $50. This same vehicle was valued in the year 2006 at nearly a thousand times that price. Every year thousands of visitors come from all over the U.S. and Canada to see Kemp's collection, which is exhibited in a large garage and in a yard next-door. The Mack Truck Museum is open for public viewing and there is no charge・ There is even a model truck playground for children to play in while their parents look at the real things. Kemp does his own restoration work, making all the trucks look shiny and run smoothly. Many truck parts he has to make for himself because manufacturers have discontinued production Iong, Iong ago. Sell the trucks.Video GamingAs video garni ng spreads, the discussio n about its social impact is inte nsifyi ng. Is it a new medium equivale nt to film and music, a valuable educati onal tool, a form of harmless fun or somethi ng terrible that makes childre n violent and stupid? Video garni ng is all these things, depending on whom you ask. Amid all the arguments, however, three important factors are gen erally overlooked: that attitudes to gaming are marked by a gen erational divide; that there is no convincing evidenee that games make people violent; and that games have great potential in educati on.Attitudes towards gamingAttitudes towards garni ng depe nd to a great exte nt on age. In America, for example, half of the population plays computer or video games・ However most players are under 40—according to Nielse n, a market-research firm, 76% of them—while most critics of garni ng are over 40. An en tire gen erati on that bega n garni ng as childre n has kept playi ng. The average age of American gamers is 30. Most are "computer natives" who grew up with tech no logy, argues Marc Pre nsky of Games2train, a firm that promotes the educational use of games. He describes older people as ""computer immigra nts" who, like newcomers any where, have had to adapt in various ways to their new tech no logical world .Just getti ng by in a foreign land without some grasp of the local Ianguage is difficult, says Mr. Prensky. Computer immigrants have had to learn to use tech no logies such as the In ter net and mobile pho nes. But relatively few of them have embraced video games ・ The word ” game" itself also conf uses matters, since it makes them seem like playthings. "What they don't understand, because they've never played them, isthat these are complex games, which take 30, 40 or 100 hours tocomplete/' says Mr. Prensky. Games are, in fact, played mainly by young adults・ Only a third of gamers are under 18. "It's just a generational divide,H says Gerhard Fiorin, the European boss of Electronic Arts, the world's biggest games publisher. "People do not know what they are talking about, because they have never played a game・ And yet, they say that millions of gamers are stupid or violent ・" Computer natives who have played video games since childhood already regard them as a form of en tertai nment equivale nt to films and music. Older computer n atives now have children of their own and enjoy playing video games with them. The gaming industry is trying to address the generational divide・It is producing games designed to appeal to people who have never played games and en couraging gamers (who may occasi on ally play simple web-based games, or games on mobile phones)to play more. This has led to the development of games with a wider appeal. Some of them replace the usual con trol pad with no vel in put devices: microphones (麦克风)for singing games, cameras for dancing and action games, and even musical instruments. In addition, the industry has started to attract more women, who seem to prefer social simulation (模拟)games such as H The Sims'1, and older people, who (if they play games at all) often prefer versions of card games and board games. Other promising areas in elude portable (便携式的)gaming, mobile gaming and on line down loads of simple games. Many people enjoy garni ng, but do not n ecessarily want to commit themselves to a long quest that will take doze ns of hours to complete.May garni ng make people viole nt?But are n't critics right to worry that garni ng might make people viole nt? In his paper, Mr. Williams describes his study carried out with Marko Skoric of the University of Michigan. The study concentrated on a "massively multiplayer (多人参与的)online role-playing game11 (MMORPG) called "Asheron Call 2". This type of game requires the player to wander around a fantasy world and kill monsters to build up attribute points. It is ,,virtually more violent than the average video game and should have more effect, given the highly repetitive nature of the viole nee 蔦the researchers no ted ・ Two groups of subjects were recruited, none of whom had played MMORPGs before and many of whom had never played video games at all. One group the n played the game for a mon th, for an average of n early two hours per day ・ The other group acted as a control. All people who participated were asked questions about how often they had aggressive social interactions (such as arguments with their spouses) during the course of the month to test the idea that gaming makes people more aggressive. Game players, it turned out, were no more aggressive than the control group. Whether the test subjects had played games before, the number of hours spe nt garni ng, and whether they liked viole nt movies or not, made no difference ・ The researchers no ted, however, that more research is still needed to assess the impact of other types of games. All games are different, and only when more detailed studies have been carried out will it be possible to say anything about the impact of gaming・Games have great potential in education. What's more, plenty of games, far from encouraging violeng are morally complex, subtle and, very possibly, improving・ Many now explicitly require players to choose whether to be good or evil, and their choices determine how the game they are playing develops・Several games based on the “Star Wars1' movies require players to choose between the light and dark sides of the Force, equivale nt to good and evil. Eve n games with no educational purpose require players to learn a great deal. Games are complex and force players to make a huge number of decisions. Gamers must con struct ideas about the in-game world, lear n its rules through trial and error (错误),solve problems and puzzles, develop strategies and get help from other players through the In ternet whe n they get stuck ・ Games can be used in many other ways ・ Tim Ryla nds, a British teacher in a primary school n ear Bristol, recently won an award from Becta, a go ver nment education agency, for using computer games in the classroom ・ By projecting the fantasy world of ,,Myst,,/ a role-playing game, on to a large screen and encouraging his 11-year-old pupils to write descriptions and reactions as he plays it, he has achieved striking improvements in their English test scores ・ So games are in here ntly good, not bad? Actually they are n either, like books, films, the Inter net, or any other medium ・ All can be used to depict sex and viole nee, or to educate and in form ・ In deed, that there is violence and sex in games is arguably a sign of the maturity of the medium, as games become more like films.:L Video games are valuable or stupid depending on _______ B _________ .A.what is overlookedB.whom is askedC.whether they are violentD.whether they are educational2.No evidenee exists to show that video games ________ B _________ .A・ are overlookedB・ make people violentC・ have great potentialD. are violent3."Computer immigrants11 are older people who have had to _____ C___________ .A・ get by in a foreign landB. play complex gamesC・ adjust to the new tech no logyD. grow up with tech no logy4.What do we learn about "computer natives1'? _____ B ___________A.They enjoy playing video games with children.B.They have played games since childhood・C.They are producing games which are violent and stupid.D.They like films and music as entertainment.5.What is said about the garni ng industry? _____ D __________A.It has started to attract more young adults.B.It is trying to persuade older people to play singing games・C・ It is produci ng games that will take doze ns of hours to complete ・D. It is trying to attract people who have never played games.6.Asheron Call 2 is a kind of game that _____ C ____________ .A・ is less violent than the average video gameB.critics are right to worry about, as it is violentC.requires the player to kill monsters to build up attribute pointsD.requires the player to travel around the world7.In the study of MMORPGs, game players _____ D __________ .A.could not control their game playB.asked many questionsC・ were more aggressiveD. were not especially violent8.More studies should be undertaken to draw a general conclusion about the impact of other types of games・9.Rather than encouraging violenee, many games are subtle, possibly improving, and morally complex.10.Games are neither good nor bad just like books, films, the internet or any other medium。

Because tests have shown every mobile phone averagely carries 18 times more potentially harmful bacteria than a toilet handle. One of the phones in the test had such high levels of bacteria that it could have given its owner a serious stomach upset. While the bacteria are not immediately harmful, high levels of bacteria indicate poor personal hygiene(卫生)and act as a breeding(交配繁殖)ground for other bugs. The findings from a sample of 30 phones by Which?magazine suggests 14.7 million of the 63 million mobile phones in use in the UK today could be potential health risk. The most unhygienic phones had more than ten times the acceptable level of bacteria and seven of them were above the level. The worst phone also had 39 times the safe level of enterobacteria(肠道菌), a group of bacteria that live in the lower intestinies(肠)of humans and animals and include bugs such as Salmonella(沙门氏菌). Other bacteria including food poisoning bugs were found on the phones but they are at safe levels. Lesson 1 Paraphrase 1. And it is an activity only of humans. And conversation is an activity which is found only among human beings. 2. Conversation is not for making a point. Conversation is not for persuading others to accept our idea or point of view. 3. In fact, the best conversationalists are those who are prepared to loss. Actually,a person who is good at conversation will not argue to win or force others to accept his point of view. 4. Bar friends are not deeply involved in each other’s lives. People who meet each other for a drink in the bar of a pub are not intimate friends for they are not deeply absorbed in each other’s lives. 5. „it could still go ignorantly on. The conversation could go on without anybody knowing who was right or wrong. 6. They are cattle in the fields, but we sit down to beef(boeuf). These animals are called cattle when they are alive and feed in the fields;but when we sit down at the table to eat,we call their meat beef. 7. The new ruling class had built a cultural barrier against him by building their French against his own language. The new ruling class by using French instead of English made it difficult for the English to accept or absorb the culture of the rulers. 8. „English had come royally into its own. The English language received proper recognition and was used by the King once more. 9. The phrase has always been used a little pejoratively and even facetiously by the lower classes. The phrase, the King’s English, has always been used disrespectfully and jokingly by the lower classes. 10. The rebellion against a cultural dominance is still there. There still exists in the working people,as in the early Saxon peasants,a spirit of opposition to the cultural authority of the ruling class. 11. There is always a great danger,as Carlyle put it,that “words will harden into things for us.” As Carlyle pointed out, there is always a great danger that we might forget that words are only symbols and take them for things they are supposed to represent. 12. Even with the most educated and the most literate, the King’s English slips and slides in conversation. Even the most learned and the most literate people do not use standard, formal English all the time in their conversation.

Translation 1. However intricate the way in which animals communicate with each other, they do not indulge in anything that deserves the name of conversation. 而动物之间的信息交流,无论其方式何等复杂,也是称不上交际的。

2. Argument may often be a part of it, but the purpose of the argument is not to convince. There is no winning in conversation. 尽管争论常常是闲聊的一部分,不过其目的并不是为了说服对方。闲谈之中是不存在什么输赢胜负的。 3. Perhaps it is because of my upbringing in English pubs that I think bar conversation has a charm of its own. 或许是从小混迹于英国小酒吧的缘故吧,我觉得酒馆里的闲聊是别有韵味的。 4. I do not remember what made one of our companions say it – she clearly had not come into the bar to say it, it was not something that was pressing on her mind – but her remark fell quite naturally into the talk. 我不记得其中一个伙伴的那句话是什么情况下说出来的 – 不过,显然她并没有特意地准备什么,那也算不上是什么非说不可的要紧话 – 那只不过是随着大伙儿的话题十分自然地脱口而出的。 5. There is always resistance in the lower classes to any attempt by an upper class to lay down rules for “English as it should be spoken.” 下层人民总是会抵制上流社会给“规范英语”制定的条条框框. 6. Words are not themselves a reality, but only representations of it, and the King’s English, like the Anglo-French of the Normans, is a class representation of reality. 词语本身并不是现实,它不过是现实的一种反应形式而已。标准英语和诺曼人的盎格鲁法语的性质一样,也只是一个阶段用来表达现实的一种形式。 7. Perhaps it is worth trying to speak it, but it should not be laid down as an edict, and made immune to change from below. 让人们学着去讲也许不错,但既不应该把它作为法令,也不应该使它完全不接受来自下层的改变。 8. There is no worse conversation than the one who punctuates his words as he speaks as if he were writing, or even who tries to use words as if he were composing a piece of prose for print. 要是有谁闲聊时也像做文章一样句逗分明,或像写一篇要发表的散文般咬文嚼字的话,那他说的话就一定极为倒人胃口。 9. When E. M. Forster writes of “the sinister corridor of our age,” we sit up at the vividness of the phrase, the force and even terror in the image. 看到E.M.福斯特笔下写出“如今这个时代阴森恐怖的长廊”时,我们可以深刻体会到语言的生动、比喻的张力。 10. There would have been no conversation the other evening if we had been able to settle at once the meaning of “the King’s English.” 那晚,如果我们当场弄清了“标准英语”的意义,也就不可能再有那场交谈辩论。

Ps:Para.9—11 Someone took one of the best – known of examples, which is still always worth the reconsidering. When we talk of meat on our tables we use French words; when we speak of
