Review of Units 5-8精讲精练词汇精讲1. such/so(1)such是形容词,意为“如此的,这样的”。

Is there such a book?

There are such beautiful flowers.

I have never heard such terrible news.

“such a / an + adj. + 单数名词”可转换成“so + adj. + a /an + 单数名词”;另外,在表示“这么多(少)的……”时名词前有many; much; few或little 时应用so而不用such。

例如:She has so many books.

She is such a nice girl. = She is so nice a girl.

2.be good with,be good to,be good at与be good for(1)be good with“和……相处得好;擅于和……相处”,相当于get on well with。

例如:Are you good with children? He gets on well with his classmates.

(2)be good to“对……好”,其反义短语为be bad to“对……不好”。

介词to之后一般接表示人的名词或代词。

例如:She is very good to us.

Many bats live a longer time than other animals of their size.European researchers are studying bats to understand why they live so long. They hope to make discoveries to fight the aging process(过程) in human beings.Last week, the group of scientists said they had found important biological qualities in some bat species. The group studied bat chromosomes(染色体), a line of genes found in the nucleus(核) of cells. The scientists were most interested in parts connected to the ends of the chromosomes. They are called telomeres(端粒). Telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes, which shorten each time a cell divides. Scientists believe this shortening process causes cells to break down.A report on bats was published this month in the journal Science Advances.Among the leaders of the study was Emma Teeling, a biologist with University College Dublin in Ireland. Teeling said studying long-living mammals that have developed ways to fight aging is another way to prove the molecular(分子) basis of extended health length. She added that studying bats made scientists able to learn more about the processes that drive healthy aging. The European researchers studied 493 bats from four bat species. The group used information that had been gathered over more than 60 years. Of these animals, the greater mouse-eared bat generally lived the longest, an average of 37 years. The scientists said this and a related species, which are grouped together under the name Myotis, had telomeres that did not shorten with age. Another Myotis bat holds the record for the oldest age, reaching 41 years. The scientists' findings suggest that these bats' cells have the ability to keep and repair their telomeres. This, they said, helps guard against the aging process. Based on its body size, a bat like the greater mouse-eared bat would be expected to live four years. But, these mammals have been found to live nearly 10 times longer than that. The scientists found that eighteen of these are bats. The only exception is an unusual African rodent, the naked mole rat.11.Which sentence can be put at the end of Paragraph 3? ( )A.This makes scientists able to study bats.B.That's why bats can fly a great distance.C.They say this is what causes aging.D.They discover the cells connected to humans.12.Why do some species of bats live a very long time? ( )A.Because they have a line of long-living genes out of the cells.B.Because their cells have the ability to keep and repair their telomeres.C.Because they have another ability to live longer without any food or water.D.Because telomeres protect the ends of chromosomes to stop cells dividing.13.The underlined word “that” refers to . ( )A.four yearsB.body sizeC.the aging processD.the ability to repair14.What's the best title of the passage? ( )A.Differences Between Long-Living AnimalsB.A Science Report on ChromosomesC.Do Bats Hold the Secret to Long Life?D.Are Humans and Bats Similar in Protecting Themselves?Ⅲ.[2019·凉山州]还原短文People travelled to see the buildings, the food, the national dresses in foreign countries because they thought they would not be the same as those of their own countries in the past. 15. They all have their Hilton or Sheraton Hotels everywhere. They all have their McDonald's, theirKFCs and their Pizza Huts. Office buildings look the same everywhere, and most city centers are full of office buildings. And of course, people are driving the same brands of Japanese or European cars. Then why is the foreign travel more popular nowadays? What do tourists hope to experience in a foreign country that they cannot experience at home? The answer could be that people could be very interested in the past. 16. Most people travel overseas to find out what foreign countries' history and culture used to be like, not what they are like today. Tourists visit different kinds of museums in foreign countries so that they can learn their history and culture.Every country also has its own beautiful places for tourists to visit. 17.18. It is not just its old buildings, its works of art or beautiful places, but also the people who live in it. This is why a country such as Thailand attracts millions of people. The tourists come mainly because of the friendliness of the people there. It is why the Pacific islands are also so popular. 19.A.It's a nation's history and culture that are the main attractions.B.The friendly people make visitors feel welcome.C.Finally, another attraction is its food.D.At present, however, one large city is similar to another.E.Their own special scenery would certainly attract tourists from other countries.F.The culture of a country means a lot.G.People learn about foreign countries by surfing the Internet.Ⅳ.

Now, there are fewer than four hundred. Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly? On the one hand, the elephants' main lake, their only water source(来源), dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans. To protect the elephants' living environment, the Mali Elephant Project(MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland. However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching(偷猎) and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephants were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations(组织) have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. Elephant poaching has dropped to a very low level.
