A Many people would love to leave their jobs behind and have a life-changing adventure overseas. They imagine lying under palm trees as the sun goes down. However, life overseas is not always easy, and many are not prepared for the shock of living in an alien culture. The honeymoon period At first, for those who actually decide to move abroad, life is an exciting adventure. They enjoy exploring their new surroundings, and life seems like an extended holiday. They don’t mind trying the local cuisine and discovering the local culture. They can even afford to practice their foreign-language skills without fear of making mistakes. Trouble in paradise In many cases, when people consider moving to another country, they often fail to realize how different life will be. As time goes by, they become frustrated when language and cultural misunderstandings become a daily headache. In this stage, the visitors begin to withdraw from life in the host country and avoid spending time with local people in favor of mixing with others from their own cultural background. The road to recovery Gradually, most visitors realize they must accept the differences and not fight against them. This change encourages them to improve their language skills and slowly they manage to do the things they could easily do at home, such as opening a bank account. This new-found confidence enables them to see a side of life which very few tourists get to witness. Adjusting to life abroad can often be a real problem. The secret to overcoming it is to stop trying to change your host country: you will not succeed. If not, you risk losing your dream and having to return to the old life you wanted to leave behind. 21. Why do people moving abroad feel excited at first? A. They find foreign living much easier. B. They have the necessary language skills. C. They love the adventure and exploration. D. They enjoy meeting people from different cultures. 22. According to the author, what is the main problem many people moving abroad face? A. Homesickness. B. Culture shock. C. Health problems. D. Lack of employment. 23. What would the author suggest people moving abroad do? A. Study the local language. B. Go on holidays frequently. C. Learn how to open a bank account. D. Seek out people from their home country.

B Australia loves interesting money. In 1988, it was the first country to replace paper money with special plastic banknotes. Now it’s introduced a new five-dollar bill so technologically advanced that many experts are calling it the money of the future! At first glance, the new note looks much like the old one. It has the same pink colour and main pictures on the front and back. But look closer, and you will notice a clear window running down the middle, surrounded by images of the yellow Prickly Moses, a type of Australian plant. Tilt(使倾斜) the note a little and you will see the Eastern Spinebill, an Australian bird, beating its wings as if trying to fly away. Turn the bill from side to side, and you will notice the picture of a small building at the bottom of the note spins, and the image of “5” changes position. While these moveable features are impressive and entertaining, that was not the reason Australian government officials spent ten years developing them. Their primary purpose was to make it impossible for criminals to produce their own fake notes. The new five-dollar note also has something to help blind people easily identify the money. It has s raised bump alongside the top and bottom, enabling blind people to quickly determine its value. The credit for persuading the Australian government to add this all-important bump goes to 15-year-old Connor McLeod. The blind Sydney teenager came up with the idea in 2014 after being unable to tell how much money he had received for Christmas. Connor says he was so embarrassed at not being able to see the difference between notes that he only carried coins to pay for food at not being able to see the difference between notes that he only carried coins to pay for food at the school cafeteria. To convince the government officials of his idea, Connor started a website that got huge public attention. The government will add this feature to the new $10 bill which comes out in late 2017, as well as the updated $20, $50, and $100 bills that are still being designed. 24. Which picture does NOT move when the banknote is tilted ? A. The bird. B. The number. C. The plants. D. The building. 25. What was the main reason the Australian government created the new banknote? A. To make the note more difficult to copy. B. To show the country’s advanced technology. C. To help blind people more easily use money. D. To make the not’s appearance more attractive. 26. What can we guess about Australian coins? A. They are different in size or shape. B. They are required in school cafeterias. C. They are more frequently used than notes. D. They are more convenient for young people. 27. What did Connor do to persuade the government? A. He wrote a letter to the leaders. B. He organized an online meeting. C. He sought support on the Internet. D. He requested a special Christmas gift. C At this year’s Technology Forum, speakers include world-famous people, such as Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer, and lesser-known individuals with great ideas to change the world. One of the latter is Jonny Cohen, a high school senior, green businessman and creator of GreenShields. Since Cohen was a child, he has been innovating and inventing. When he was 12 and took science classes at Northwestern University, he saw a school bus and had an idea: what if the shape of school bus was improved to make it more fuel efficient? This would greatly reduce the amount of pollution it produced. He set about making a wind tunnel in his parents’ garage and placed small metal plates or shields on toy school buses to test them. The result: his shields redirected the airflow over and around the bus, decreased wing drag, and produced better fuel economy and less pollution.

ALanguages are dying out all the time. Here are four languages that were once widely spoken but are now considered as “dead” languages.Old NorseOld Norse was spoken and written by the Vikings from about the 7th century. It was used in countries like Iceland and parts of Russia. The Vikings were famous for their attacks on neighbouring countries, and so Old Norse had an influence on the languages of the places they attacked, including English. For example, English words such as “egg, gift, anger, want, trust and score” come from Old Nors e.Middle EnglishMiddle English was spoken in England between the 12th and 15th centuries and was very different from the English we use these days. In the past, England was highly influenced by Old Norse. So was its language. There areno manuscripts (手稿) in Middle English as it was much more fashionable to write in French. Middle English gave way to modern English. One example of the wide use of modern English was Shakespeare’s works.HunnirHunnir is the most mysterious of the languages on our list. The Huns were a community that spread across eastern Europe in the 4th and 5th centuries. Despite the Huns’ success in expanding their empire, their language was never written down. The few words that are known are mainly names-in modern Turkey and Mongolia. Apart from these, only three words are known; kamos, medos (types of drinks) and strava (a big meal).Ancient GreekMore than 4,000 years ago, the Greeks spoke an advanced language known today as Ancient Greek, and developed the first alphabet. Indeed, the English word “alphabet” is taken from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet: alpha and beta. Although the language is no longer spoken anywhere, it continues to be studied by scholars around the world and is regarded as one of the most important languages of all time.21. Which language was spoken by the Vikings?A. Old Norse.B. Middle English.C. Ancient Greek.D. Hunnir.22. Why did Middle English disappear?A. French was a popular written language then.B. Modern English replaced Middle English.C. Shakespeare didn’t use Middle English.D. Middle English was influenced by Old Norse.23. Which word comes from Ancient Greek?A. Want.B. Kamos.C. Strava.D. Alphabet.BIceland is Europe’s westernmost country. Over 1,000 years ago, ancient explorers migrated from northern Europe to Iceland and established the country. Most visitors’ popular destination is its capital city, Reykjavik, known for its stylish architecture. The city’s downtown area is lined with shops, art galleries, cafes, and bookstores.Iceland is one of the most volcanically active nations in the world witha number of hot springs, all of which are heated naturally by volcanic activity. In fact, Iceland changes energy from these springs into electricity, which powers and heats people’s homes. As a result, Iceland burns very little fossil (化石) fuel, such as oil and gas. Hot springs are also popular among tourists. They receive more than 1.3 million visitors a year, who can relax their muscles and release their tension in the hot water.Apart from springs, there is a range of outdoor activities for visitorsto enjoy elsewhere in the country. “Iceland is an adventure,” says Squire, whose company organizes adventure trips. “We have Europe’s biggestglaciers (冰山), active volcanoes, cave explorations, and skiing.” One of Iceland’s most popular attractions is caving. Exploring Iceland’s unusual caves requires only basic caving knowledge and equipment. Ice caves are more challenging, however, and require special clothes and hiking tools. If exploring caves and glaciers doesn’t interest you, head south. Notrip to Iceland would be complete without a visit to the Golden Circle, which connects Gullfoss, Geysir, and Thingvellir Valley. Adventurers go to the Thingvellir Valley, where the land is actually separating and the stony ground beneath your feet frequently shifts. Hold on while you hike!24. What is Reykjavik famous for?A. When he arrived on the scene, Ken put on heavy gloves. If koalas feel threatened, they bite. He then threw a blanket over the animal for more protection from being bitten. He then firmly grasped the koala through the blanket, and dropped it in a cage.Normally, if the koala is healthy, it is released where it is found. Koalas tend to eat from the same eucalyptus trees (桉树) over and over. But, the problem was that there were no eucalyptus trees left for this koala.Ken had to take it to a small park nearby. Food is one of the reasons why koalas are at risk. For 15 years, Ken has also been working on ways to make suburban areas more koala-friendly. He believes that koalas and humans can live togetherif certain changes are made. He recommends reducing speed limits in streets, creating more green areas for koalas to live in. What’s even moreimportant is the need to preserve eucalyptus trees.Even if these changes are made, koalas still have another problem. “Disease is a huge issue,” explains Ken. He says that almost half of Queensland’s female koalas are affected by a strange disease. “Without treatment, the koalas are unable to have babies. Koalas are becoming extinct,” says Ken.Later that day, Ken visited a forest near Queensland to catch Tea, a wild female koala. Ken had been following Tea for over a year. Using special equipment, Ken walked and listened for a signal from the koala’s radio collar. He eventually found Tea sitting on a tree branch. Ken climbed up a ladder and caught Tea. After some medical check-ups, Ken found she had a baby. “As long as there are healthy babies,” he said, “there’s still hope.”28. What did Ken use the blanket for?A. Catching the koala after it fell from a fence.B. Covering the koala so that it didn’t harm him.C. Keeping the koala warm after it was caught.D. Helping the koala stay calm in the cage.29. Why was the koala that Ken caught released in a nearby park?A. The koala was in a good physical condition.B. Koalas were fed in the same trees again and again.C. It was the only place nearby that had eucalyptus trees.D. That was where the koala probably had its own baby.30. What did Ken want to do with Tea?A. To see if she had a baby.B. To put a radio collar on her.C. To keep her in a cage.D. To give her medicine.31. In which section of a newspaper may this passage appear?A. Entertainment.B. Health.C. People and Animals.D. Politics.DBehind the enthusiastic song of an all-male choir (合唱队) lies a force that is better known for shaping the lives of hopeful frogs and crickets, research suggests. Recordings of a top boys’ choir, once directed by Johann Sebastian Bach in Germany, reveal that the more mature boys in the group boosted their voices when girls were appreciating their performances. The effect, seen only among the older singers, aged 16 to 19, is thought to be similar behaviour more often observed in frogs and crickets, which enhance their individual calls to stand out from the crowd during mate-attracting choruses.“The boys’ singing sounds mo re brilliant and has a more attractive quality when girls are in the audience, but it is subtle,” said Keller, a professor who led the work at the centre for music in the brain at a university in Denmark. Keller and his colleagues teamed up with a well-known choir in Germany after a student and former member of the choirmentioned that the boys boosted their voices in a barely noticeable manner when female audience members were present.Sound analysis of the boys singing a song composed by Bach found that, in the presence of girls aged 15 to 16, the boys improved their vocalbrilliance and carried power by putting more energy. But it was unclear whether people, as opposed to sensitive sound devices, could detect the shift in voices, and if they could, whether the resulting sound was more or less appealing because of the enhanced singer’s performance. To find out, the researchers ran two online studies in which 2,247 male and female volunteers listened to recordings of the boys singing with and without girls in the audience. While both male and female participants showed a difference between the two performances, only female volunteers preferred the boosted singing. “It’s really hard to tell,” Keller said. Details are published in a journal. For the recordings, the boys performed once before an all-male audience and a second time when a group of teenage girls joined the front row on the pretence of being on a school trip. In interviews after the concert, the boys felt they sang better in front of the girls but none admitted trying to attract their attention.According to the scientists, the findings suggest choir singing is a special form of social communication where cooperation and competitiveness, the latter potentially motivated by the opposite sex, can exist alongside one another. “You have a group of people working together,” said Keller, “but at the same time individually having this parallel channel of communication, sending out the competitive signal saying: pick me!”32. What drives the mature boys to sing better according to Paragraph 1?A. Their directors.B. Their audience.C. The frogs.D. The crickets.33. What does the underlined word “subtle” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Brilliant.B. Competitive.C. Unforgettable.D. Unnoticeable.34. How did Keller’s team carry out the research?A. By observing the singers.B. By studying documents.C. By doing field research.D. By conducting studies online.35. What can be the best title for the passage?A. Cooperation or CompetitionB. Forc e behind Boy’s ChoirC. Research into the PerformanceD. illness, but I couldn't seem to recover from the thought that I loved my husband less than he loved me.This seeming distinction in our love continued to annoy me for the year following my illness. Then recently Scott and I went on a long bike ride. He's an experienced cyclist;I'm quite the green hand.At one point with a strong headwind and sharp pain building in my tired legs,I really thought I couldn't go any further.Seeing me struggle,Scott pulled in front of me and yelled over his shoulder,"Stay close behind me."As I followed his steps,I discovered that my legs quit burning and I was able nearly crashed his car while driving and texting on his phone. It was this near﹣death experience that inspired him to turn the smartphone from a weapon of mass distraction into a tool for safer driving.Mr.Cobalas developed Safe Drive,an app that rewards drivers for ignoring their phones while driving.Once a driver drives too fast, the app launches a"Release"button on the screen, effectively locking the phone.Driving without checking the phone generates scores that can be turned into shopping discounts in the Safe Drive Marketplace. It's a simple idea that has attracted nearly 100,000 users globally and 30 commercialpartners.Worldwide, about 1.25million people die each year as a result of road traffic accidents, according to the World Health Organization."Smartphone distraction"is blamed for an increasing number of accidents.Drivers using a mobile phone are four times more likely to be involved in a crash. Many parents also want to educate their children, young drivers. That is why a growing number of technology businessmen are trying to handle the problem."Although smartphones are rightly blamed for an increase in distracted driving,we wanted to show that smartphones could be used to make drivers better,"says Hari Balakrishnan, chief technology officer of Cambridge Mobile Telematics,a US company that has developed an app called Drive Well. The app measures all aspects of driving such as hard braking, abrupt acceleration, sharp cornering and speeding. But it also monitors how often drivers are distracted by their phones and generates a"safety score"at the end of each trip. The free app features competition leader boards that enable drivers to compete with their friends, family and colleagues,as well as personalized safer driving tips.Good safety scores can earn drivers discounts on car insurance,Mr.Balakrishnan says.Last year the company started a competition to find Boston's safest driver.Nearly 5,000 people have signed up,and 98 have been awarded more than found in a hot,but beautiful cave system in Naica,Mexico. These ancient life forms can be seen only with a microscope.Penelope Boston, who leads the Astrobiology Institute at NASA,the space agency of the United States, says the ancient microbes were able to live by eating minerals such as iron. She spoke about the discovery recently at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. If the findings are confirmed, they will show how microbes can survive in extreme conditions.Forty different kinds of microbes and some viruses were found in the underground area. The genetic structures of these organisms are 10 percent different from those of their nearest relatives. The caves in Naica are 800 kilometers deep. They were once used for mining lead. Before the miners began working in the caves, the area was separated from the surface and the outside world. Some of the caves are as big as the large religiouscenters built during Europe's Middle Ages. There are crystals covering the walls. The caves are so hot that scientists must wear special clothing to keep cool. The clothing keeps the crystals safe from human germs(病菌)or other damage.Boston said the researchers could only work for about 20 minutes at a time before they had to go to a room that was 38 degrees Celsius to cool down.NASA officials would not let Boston share her findings with scientific experts before last week's announcement. So scientists could not say much about the findings. But Norine Noonan,a biologist with the University of South Florida, said she believed them."Why are we surprised?"Noonan asked."As a biologist,I would say life on Earth is extremely tough and extremely colorful."Boston is also studying microbes commonly found inside caves in other countries, such as Ukraine and the United States. These microbes appear to be impossible to kill.Boston said they show how difficult life on Earth can be.32.The existence of the ancient microbes relies on.A.surrounding texting on his phone. It was this near﹣death experience that inspired him to turn the smartphone from a weapon of mass distraction into a tool for safer driving.Mr.Cobalas developed Safe Drive,an app that rewards drivers for ignoring theirphones while driving.Once a driver drives too fast, the app launches a"Release"button on the screen, effectively locking the phone.Driving without checking the phone generates scores that can be turned into shopping discounts in the Safe Drive Marketplace. It's a simple idea that has attracted nearly 100,000 users globally and 30 commercial partners.Worldwide, about 1.25million people die each year as a result of road traffic accidents, according to the World Health Organization."Smartphone distraction"is blamed for an increasing number of accidents.Drivers using a mobile phone are four times more likely to be involved in a crash. The free app features competition leader boards that enable drivers to compete with their friends, family and colleagues,as well as personalized safer driving tips.Good safety scores can earn drivers discounts on car insurance,Mr.Balakrishnan says.Last year the company started a competition to find Boston's safest driver.Nearly 5,000 people have signed up,and 98 have been awarded more than 3,400 in prizes.Data from 40,000 Drive Well app users around the world present its effectiveness, says Mr.Madden.28.What caused Tudor Cobalas to develop the app Safe Drive?DA.Multi﹣functions of this app.B.His desire to make a fortune.C.Many parents'worries about teenagers'driving safety.D.His own experience about being distracted by his smartphone.29.What do Safe Drive and Drive Well have in common?CA.They keep a specific record of hard braking.B.They fail to help decrease the number of traffic accidents.C.Their users get some scores in the driving process.D.Their users get money as a reward directly.30.Which of the following is closest to the meaning of the underlined word"distracted"in paragraph 4?AA.Lacking concentration.B.Lacking confidence.C.Speedy.D.Dangerous.31.What is the purpose of the passage?DA.To present the harmful effects of smartphones in the driving process.B.To introduce some useful apps that can guarantee our safety.C.To compare different types of apps concerning driving safety.D.To show us smartphones can make drivers safer in a way.【考点】O6:社会文化类阅读.【分析】文章主要通过介绍与驾驶相关的应用程序显示出智能手机也能让驾驶员更加安全地驾驶.【解答】28.D 细节理解题.根据第一段第二句"It was this near﹣death experience that inspired(启发;使…有灵感)him to turn the smartphone from a weapon of mass distraction into a tool for safer driving",这句强调句里强调了Tudor Cobalas 开发Safe Drive 这个应用程序的原因,故D选项"His own experience about being distracted by his smartphone"正确.A选项的"Multi﹣functions(多功能)",B选项的"desire to make a fortune(发财致富的渴望)"和C选项的"parents'worries"在文中均未提及,故排除A,B和C,所以答案选D.29.C 推理判断题.题干问的是Safe Drive和Drive Well应用程序的共同点,根据第二段"Driving without checking the phone generates scores"和第五段"generates a safety score"可知C选项正确.根据第五段"The app measures all aspects of driving such as hard braking"可知,A选项的"keep a specific record of hard braking"只符合应用程序Drive Well,故排除选项A;根据最后一段"present its effectiveness"可知B选项的"fail to help decrease(没能帮助减少)the number"与原文不符,故排除B;根据第二段"generates scores that can be turned into shopping discounts(折扣)"和第五段"Good safety scores can earn drivers discounts on car insurance"可知D选项的"get money as a reward directly"与原文不符,故排除D,所以答案选C.30.A 词义猜测题.根据第三段"Smartphone distraction is blamed for(因…被责备)an increasing number of accidents.Drivers using a mobile phone are four times more likely to be involved in a crash."可知,"distraction"指的是司机在开车时因为使用手机受到干扰.题干里考查"smartphones are rightly blamed for an increase in distracted driving"中的"distracted",可由distraction的意义推出A选项"Lacking concentration(注意力不集中)"正确.B选项"Lacking confidence"意为"缺乏信心",C选项"Speedy"意为"迅速的",D选项"Dangerous"意为"危险的",均不符合语境,故排除B、C和D,答案选A.31.D 写作目的题.

Now,a study of first and second graders suggests what may be part of the answer:Female primaryschool teachers who are concerned about their own sills could be passing that along to the little girls they teach.Young students tend to model themselves after adults of the same se,eplained Beiloc,an associate professor in psychology at the University of Chicago. Little girls may learn to fear math from the women who are their earliest teachers. Beiloc and her colleagues studied 52 boys and 65 girls in classes taught by 17 different teachers. Ninety percent of the US primary school teachers are women,as was all of those in this study.Students’ math ability was not related to teachers’ math aniety at the start of the school year, but at the end of the year, the more anious teachers were about their own sills, the more liely their female students—but not the boys—were to agree to that “boys are good at math and girls are good at reading”.In addition, the girls who answered that way scored lower on math tests than eithe r the classes’ boys or the girls who had not developed such a belief, the researchers found. After seeing the results, the researchers recommended that the math requirements for obtaining a primary education teaching degree should be rethought. “If the net generation of teachers, especially primary school teachers,is going to teach their students more effectively, more care needs to be taen to develop both strong math sills and positive math attitudes in these educators,” the researchers wrote.“Girls who grow up believing females lac math sills wind up avoiding harder math classes. It eeps girls and women out of a lot of careers, particularly in science technology,” Beiloc said.24.We can learn from the first three paragraphs that ______.A. teachers in US primary schools are mostly femalesB. the students involved in the study are starters at primary schoolC. young students usually follow eample of their female teachersD. it’s true that boys do well in math while girls do well in reading25. We can we infer from the tet?A. Beiloc’s study will bring about a primary education revolution.B. Girls’ lac of confidence in math sills affects their future jobs.C. The performance of the students changed little during the process of the study.D. The researchers argued that current primary school education needed improving.26. What’s the suggested solution to the phenomenon mentioned in the tet?A. Using different approaches to ecite students’ interest in math.B. Reducing the number of situations that mae teachers anious.C. Creating more chances for boys and girls to wor together in class.D. Improving teachers’ math sills and changing their math attitudes.27. What’s the main idea of the tet?A. Girls may learn math aniety from female teachers.B. Boys are free from the math aniety of female teachers.C. Primary school teachers have a far-reaching influence on students.D. Students should learn how to hold positive attitudes towards math.CThe word "O" is the most frequently spoen all-purpose epression on the planet — and it's turning 176 years old on March 23, 2015. The term was born during a 19th-century abbreviation(缩写) crae and went on to international fame with its own hand gesture.Last year, Henry Nass, a 64-year-old retired English teacher, a New Yorer, had spent the last few wees handing out cards championing "Global O Day" in advance of the coming anniversary."No matter where people are from they use the word 'O,' but they don't now where it comes from," says Nass. "The problem is because it's just, you now, O."The word is O, perhaps, but its history is definitely better than average. Late etymologist Allen Waler Read traced the two-letter word to 1839, when editors at the Boston Morning Post signed off on articles as “all correct” with a simple word “O”.The word made it into print on March 23 of that year, in an article against a rival editor in Providence who had stated wrongly that a band of Bostonians headingto New Yor would pass through the Rhode Island capital (Providence)."We said not a word about our team passing 'through the city' of Providence," the Morning Post reported. "O.. — all correct."The humor of the Providence-Boston joe has been lost to history —but the word O too off from there, soon connoting(隐含) agreement, acceptance, averageness, quality or liability.By 1840, it served as a slogan for President Martin Van Buren's unsuccessful reelection campaign. “Old inderhoo is O,” posters stated, a reference to the eighth president's birthplace and his supporters' belief in his satisfactory performance.28. Why did Henry Nass hand out cards?A. To let people understand the history of the word “O”.B. To call on people to use the word “O” properly.C. To appeal to people to celebrate O Day.D. To attract people’s attention.29. What does the author want to convey in Paragraph 4?A. The history of the word “O” is nown to average people.B. The history of the word “O” is unfamiliar to people.C. We can learn from the tet that inderhoo is of the eighth Americanpresident.A. the nameB. the birthplaceC. the policyD. the beliefDAlmost every day we come across situations in which we have to mae decisions one way or another. Choice, we are given to believe, is a right. But for a good many people in the world,in rich and poor countries, choice is a luury, something wonderful but hard to get, not a right. And for those who thin they are eercisingtheir right to mae choices, the whole system is merely an illusion, a false idea created by companies and advertisers, hoping to sell their products. The endless choice gives birth to aniety in people’s lives. Buying something as basic as a coffee pot is not eactly simple. Easy access to a wide range of everyday goods leads to a sense of powerlessness in many people, ending in the shopper giving up and waling away, or just buying an unsuitable item(商品) that is not really wanted. Recent studies in England have shown that many electrical goods bought in almost every family are not really needed. More difficult decision-maing is then either avoided or trusted into the hands of the professionals, lifestyle instructors, or advisors. It is not just the availability of the goods that is the problem, but the speed with which new types of products come on the maret. Advances in design and production help quicen the process. Products also need to have a short lifespan so that the public can be persuaded to replace them within a short time. The typical eample is computers, which are almost out-of-date once they are bought. This indeed maes selection a problem. Gone are the days when one could just wal with ease into a shop and buy one thing; no choice, no aniety.32.What does the author try to argue in Paragraph l?A. The practice of choice is difficult.B.The right of choice is given but at a price.C. Choice and right eist at the same time.D. The eercise of rights is a luury.33. Why do more choices of goods give rise to aniety?A. People are liely to find themselves overcome by business persuasion.B. Shoppers may find themselves lost in the broad range of items.C. Companies and advertisers are often misleading about the range of choice.D. Professionals find it hard to decide on a suitable product.34. By using computers as an eample, the author wants to prove that___________.A. products of the latest design flood the maretB. competitions are fierce in high-tech industryC. everyday goods need to be replaced oftenD. advanced products meet the needs of people35. What is this passage mainly about?A. The opinions on people's right in different countries.B. The problems about the availability of everyday goods.C. The helplessness in purchasing decisions.D. The variety of choices in modern society.第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 选项中有两项为多余选项,并在答题卷上将该选项涂黑。

"We have shown some people have a faster innate aging rate."The findings discovered that 5 percent of the population ages at a faster biological rate, which translated to a roughly 50 percent higher than average risk of death at any age."The great hope is that we find anti-aging interventions that would slow your innate aging rate," Horvath said, adding that "this is an important milestone to realizing this dream."24.Some people keep healthy lifestyle but die younger than others because ______.A. their biological clock is not powerful enoughB. the most definitive evidence has been foundC. they have a higher actual age than othersD. they ages at a relatively faster biological rate25.How was the study conducted?A. AMany people would love to leave their jobs behind and have a life-changing adventure overseas. They imagine lying under palm trees as the sun goes down. However, life overseas is not always easy, and many are not prepared for the shock of living in an alien culture. The honeymoon periodAt first, for those who actually decide to move abroad, life is an exciting adventure. They enjoy exploring their new surroundings, and life seems like an extended holida y. They don’t mind trying the local cuisine and discovering the local culture. They can even afford to practice their foreign-language skills without fear of making mistakes.Trouble in paradiseIn many cases, when people consider moving to another country, they often fail to realize how different life will be. As time goes by, they become frustrated when language and cultural misunderstandings become a daily headache. In this stage, the visitors begin to withdraw from life in the host country and avoid spending time with local people in favor of mixing with others from their own cultural background. The road to recoveryGradually, most visitors realize they must accept the differences and not fight against them. This change encourages them to improve their language skills and slowly they manage to do the things they could easily do at home, such as opening a bank account. This new-found confidence enables them to see a side of life which very few tourists get to witness.Adjusting to life abroad can often be a real problem. The secret to overcoming it is to stop trying to change your host country: you will not succeed. If not, you risk losing your dream and having to return to the old life you wanted to leave behind.21. Seek out people from their home country.BAustralia loves interesting money. In 1988, it was the firstcountry to replace paper money with special plastic banknotes. Now it’s introduced a new five-dollar bill so technologicallyadvanced that many experts are calling it the money of thefuture! At first glance, the new note looks much like the old one. It has the same pink colour andmain pictures on the front and back. But look closer, and you will notice a clear window running down the middle, surrounded by images of the yellow Prickly Moses, a type of Australian plant.Tilt(使倾斜) the note a little and you will see the Eastern Spinebill, an Australian bird, beating its wings as if trying to fly away. The government will add this feature to the new $10 bill which comes out in late 2017, as well as the updated $20, $50, and $100 bills that are still being designed.24. Which picture does NOT move when the banknote is tilted ?A. The bird.B. The number.C. The plants.D. The building.25. What was the main reason the Australian government created the new banknote?A. To make the note more difficult to copy.B. To show the country’s advanced technology.C. To help blind people more easily use money.D. To make the not’s appearance more a ttractive.26. What can we guess about Australian coins?A. They are different in size or shape.B. They are required in school cafeterias.C. They are more frequently used than notes.D. They are more convenient for young people.27. What did Connor do to persuade the government?A. He wrote a letter to the leaders.B. He organized an online meeting.C. He sought support on the Internet.D. He requested a special Christmas gift.CAt this year’s Technology Forum, speakers include wo rld-famous people, such as Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple Computer, and lesser-known individuals with great ideas to change the world. One of the latter is Jonny Cohen, a high school senior, green businessman and creator of GreenShields.Since Cohen was a child, he has been innovating and inventing. The result: his shields redirected the airflow over and around the bus, decreased wing drag, and produced better fuel economy and less pollution.Cohen went through various experiments to improve his GreenShields invention. With the help of MIT and Cook-Illinois Bus Company, which donated a full-sized bus for Cohen’s experiments, he now has a shield model that is inexpensive and easy to attach, enablingwidespread adoption. How much of an impact can these shields have on climate change? Fuel consumption for the average US school bus is seven miles per gallon. GreenShields increases fuel efficiency by 10-20%, saving about $600 per bus per year, and costs only $30 to attach. Cohen and his partners are now trying to persuade the government to put GreenShields on all school buses. With almost half-a-million school buses in America using nearly $2.5 billion of fuel per year, a consumption reduction of 10-20% would make a big difference in pollution. Not to mention the roughly $285 million in annual savings on fuel.28. What can we learn about Jonny Cohen from the text?A. He has produced GreenShields independently.B. He has been employed to improve school buses.C. He is a world-famous businessman and inventor.D. He has a talent for finding and solving problems.29.How does GreenShields make a bus more fuel efficient?A. By reducing the amount of wind drag.B. By improving the quality of fuel used.C. By providing a wind tunnel for the bus.D. By changing the shape of the bus engine.30. Where did Cohen begin testing his shields?A. At Northwestern University.B. In his parents’ garage.C. At a local bus company.D. In an MIT lab.31. What’s the intended benefit of Cohen’s invention?A. To provide school buses with cheaper fuel.B. To reduce the cost of producing school buses.C. To increase the profits of the school bus industry.D. To make school buses more environmentally-friendly.DWe all know the feeling: looking at the computer screen, pretending to be interested in our homework, even though we really feel bored. But such feelings may soon be at an end, says Dr. Harry Witchel, head of the Essex Medical School. He believes that computers of the future willnotice when people feel bored and even take action to stop it.Before you get concerned, the machine won’t be readi ng your mind. It will be observing the many movements you make while using a computer. It’s not interested in the big movements needed to use the machine 一like moving a mouse or touching a screen —but small, barely noticeable movements like closing your eyes, moving in your seat or rubbing your face. Witchel calls these “boredom movements" and says they show how interested the person is in what they are reading or watching. The higher the interest level, the less movement! To test his theory, Witchel invited 27 people to perform various computer-based tasks. The activities ranged from playing online games (an interesting task) to reading documents like government laws that most people would find boring.A special video camera followed the participants’ move ments as they completed each task. Just as the researcher expected, the “boredom movements" greatly decreased, by as much as 42%,when the subjects were very interested in what they were reading or seeing.Fortunately, DrWitchel isn’t planning to use his re sults to create machines that report students who are not paying attention at school. Instead, he wants “movement sensing” technology to be built into future computers in order to improve students' computer-based learning experience. The scientist says that by measuring the students' interest level as they work, educators will be able to adjust their materials in real-time to keep students focused. Witchel also believes that the technology can provide filmmakers with honest audience opinions and in the future, help to develop more intelligent robots.32. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 1 refer to?A. Homework.B. A computer.C. Boredom.D. The future.33. Why did DrWitchel carry out his research?A. To discover how bored people move.B. To find out what makes people bored.C. To see if interested people are more active.D. To test the link between boredom and movement.34. Which movement would Witchel's technology most likely pay attention to?A. Turning off the machine.B. Typing words on a keyboard.C. Surfing quickly between webpages.D. Moving one’s head from side to side.35. How will the new technology help education, according to Witchel?A. By reducing teachers' workload.B. By maintaining students' learning interest.C. By reporting students' misbehavior in class.D. By making learning more like a computer game.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

Built over 2,200 years ago in what is now Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this amazing engineering achievement is still used today to irrigate over 6,000 square kilometres of farmland, take away floodwater and provide waterfor 50 cities in the province. In ancient times, the region in which Dujiangyan now standssuffered from regular floods caused by overflow from the Minjiang River. To help the victims of the flooding, Li Bing, the region’s governor, together with his son, decided to find a solution. They studied the problem and discovered that the river most often overflowed when winter snow at the top of the nearby Mount Yulei began to melt as the weather warmed. The simplest fix was to build a dam, but this would have mined the Minjiang River. So instead Li designed a series of channels built at different levels along Mount Yulei that would take away the floodwater while leaving the river flowing naturally. Better still, the extra water could be directed to the dry Chengdu Plain, making it suitable for farming.Cutting the channels through the hard rock of Mount Yulei was a remarkable accomplish- ment as it was done long before the invention of gunpowder and explosives. Li Bing found another solution. He used a combination of fire and water to heat and cool the rocks until they cracked and could be removed. After eight years of work, the 2-metre-wide canals had been carved through the mountain.Once the system was finished, no more floods occurred and the people were able to live peacefully and affluently. Today, Dujiangyan is admired by scientists from around the world because of one feature. Unlike modern dams where the water is blocked with a huge wall, Dujiangyan still lets water flow through the Minjiang River naturally, enabling ecosystems and fish populations to exist in harmony.24. What are the benefits of Dujiangyan according to the first paragraph?A. Reducing flooding and watering farmland.B. Protecting the mountain and reducing flooding.C. Watering farmland and improving water quality.D. Drying the river and supplying cities with water.25. What was the main cause of the Minjiang River’s flooding?A. Heavy rains.B. Melting snow.C. Low river banks.D. Steep mountains.26. How was Li Bing able to break。
