It's crazy how much things have changed in just a couple of generations! For the unit project, I worked with some classmates to put together a video sharing our interviews.Then in Unit 3, we moved on to the topic of animals and wildlife conservation. Did you know that there are less than 2,000 giant pandas left in the wild? We learned about the threats they face from habitat loss and how organizations are working hard to protect endangered species. As part of a group project, we designed a poster campaign to raise awareness about wildlife protection.One of the highlights of the semester was definitely Unit 4 on sports and fitness. We had so much fun learning about different sports like basketball, soccer, gymnastics and more from around the globe. I've been trying to get more active and stay healthy, so the unit motivated me to join the school's ping pong team. My coaches have been really encouraging and it's been awesome making new friends who share my interests.Most recently in Unit 5, we studied the topic of jobs and careers. I have to admit, thinking about potential future careers kind of stresses me out a bit! There are just so many interesting options to consider. We did some self-assessment activities to identify our strengths and interests which was helpful. I could maybe see myself doing something related to technology or engineering down the road, but who knows? I've got plenty of time to figure it out still.The current unit we're working on is Unit 6 covering travel and transportation. It's been really cool learning about different modes of transportation used globally, as well as hearing my classmates' travel experiences and seeing photos/videos from their trips. Personally, I haven't had the chance to travel overseas yet, but I'd love to someday. Maybe I could be a pilot or flight attendant? For our unit project, my group is researching and putting together a multi-media travel guide for a country of our choice.Outside of our academic classes, there are lots of other awesome activities to get involved with at school too. I'm part of the Student Council, which has given me great leadership experience through organizing events like holiday celebrationsand charity drives. We also have a ton of interest clubs to join based on hobbies like music, art, robotics, and more.While 7th grade has kept me quite busy with classes, homework, extracurriculars and everything else, I've still had an amazing experience so far. Middle school is a blast (most of the time at least)! I'm making incredible memories and growing as an individual. My parents triedto encourage me though, telling me that I was growing up to become a "big girl" now. I didn't feel that big to be honest!My first few weeks were spent just getting used to the new routine and classes. I love learning English and that has continued to be one of my favorite subjects this year. In Unit 1 we learned about some different festivals celebrated around the world like Thanksgiving and Halloween. It was really interesting to compare the customs and traditions to the festivals we celebrate here in China. I remember writing a report on the Mexican Day of the Dead festival - I found the decorated skull masks they use quite spooky at first but then I understood it was meant to be a joyful celebration of life.In Unit 2 we studied about different jobs that people do. I've always dreamed of being a scientist when I grow up, so I was really fascinated to learn about some of the careers in fields like biology, chemistry and environmental science. I wrote a career profile on a marine biologist who studies and protects ocean life. It sounds like such an adventurous job! Getting to scuba dive and explore the oceans would be amazing. I still have a lot of time to decide what career path to take, but learning about the different options has helped give me some ideas.One of the units I struggled with most was Unit 3 on travel and transportation. There was just so much new vocabulary to memorize - different types of vehicles, describing locations and giving directions. I worked really hard though and my English grades have been pretty good. My parents were very proud when I got an A on my unit test! The topic of travel also inspired me to convince my parents to plan a family trip during the winter break. We ended up going to Beijing to see all the famous sights like the Forbidden City, Summer Palace and of course the Great Wall. It was tiring with all the walking but so much fun to experience a new city together.Unit 4 was about hobbies and recreational activities. My biggest hobby is definitely reading - I'm a total bookworm! I love getting lost in the world of fiction novels. This unit gave me a chance to share my passion for reading with my classmates and teachers. I did an oral presentation all about my favorite book series, Harry Potter. I brought in some of the books from home and talked about the plots and characters. I was nervous speaking in front of everyone at first, but then I remembered how well I knew the material since it's something I love. The presentation went really well!More recently in Unit 5, we studied environmental protection which is such an important topic in today's world. We learned about things like renewable energy, recycling, and reducing pollution and waste. My class got into some great discussions about how we can all do our part, even as students. We decided to start a "green club" at school to look for ways we can make our campus more environmentally friendly. Some of the ideas we've come up with so far are setting up recycling bins, organizing trash clean-ups, and taking public transportation instead of getting rides from parents when possible. I'm really excited to get this new club off the ground!The current unit we're working on is Unit 6 covering science and technology. I find this subject area fascinating as the world seems to be evolving so quickly with new inventions and innovations every day. We've learned about things like biotechnology, artificial intelligence, renewable energy sources and more. We want to show how technology can help create a more sustainable society. I know I'll keep working hard and doing my best. While there are challenges, I genuinely enjoy learning new things every day across my different classes. My teachers have been great at making the content interesting and relevant to our lives.I'm also trying to have fun and live a balanced life outside of academics. I still make time to hang out with my friends, read for pleasure, and exercise by playing badminton a couple times a week. Oh, and I can't forget about my favorite hobby - playing video games! I have to be careful not to play too much though or else my parents will cut off my game time.Looking ahead, I'm starting to feel a little worried about eventually having to take that big test at the end of 9th grade, the high school entrance exam. I know it's still a couple years away but the pressure is already building! My parents have high expectations for me to get into one of the top high schools. I'll just have to stay focused and keep working hard.For now though, I'm trying my best to enjoy being a 7th grader - that perfect balanced age of not being too young but also not yet a jaded teenager! These really are the fun, carefree years. While there's homework and tests, I don't have manyserious responsibilities weighing me down. I can be a kid but I'm also becoming more independent and discovering my true interests and identity.I feel very fortunate to be getting such a well-rounded education, especially with the emphasis on English language learning. I wake up around 6:30 every morning after my mom calls me. I brush my teeth, wash my face, get dressed and have breakfast - usually some cereal, eggs, or toast with jam. Then I pack up my school bag with all my books, notebooks, pencil case and lunch box before heading out the door.The school day begins at 8am sharp. My first class is usually math or science. I really like science, especially learning about animals and the environment. My favorite animals are pandas - they're just so cute and cuddly! In science class, we get to do lots of fun experiments like making a volcano erupt with baking soda and vinegar. Math is okay but can be kind of boring sometimes with all the calculations.After those classes, we have a short break to run around outside in the playground and play games like tag or hopscotch with our friends. That's when I can snack on some crackers, a granola bar or fruit from my lunchbox. Getting some fresh air and exercise helps me re-energize for the rest of the morning.Then it's time for Chinese and English classes. In Chinese, we're reading some ancient fables and poems right now. Some of them are pretty confusing with all the proverbs and symbolism, but our teacher is really good at explaining them to us. English is probably my favorite subject - I find it super cool to learn a whole new language! We get to practice dialogues, read stories, learn new vocabulary and grammar structures. I'm getting better at listening, speaking, reading and writing in English.Around 12pm, we break for a longer lunch period. In the cafeteria, my friends and I can choose from all kinds of dishes - noodles, fried rice, dumplings, steamed vegetables. My absolute favorite is kung pao chicken though! After eating, there's more time to run around outside or just hang out and chat.The afternoon classes are a mix of subjects like history, geography, art, music and PE. In history, we're studying ancient China and learning about dynasties, emperors, philosophies and traditions. It's all really fascinating stuff! For geography, we get to look at maps and learn about different countries, cultures and landforms around the world. Art class allows us to get creative by painting, drawing, sculpting with clay and more. I just lovegetting my hands messy with all the paints, pastels and art supplies!Music is great too because we can sing songs, play instruments like the recorder or hand bells, and even put on little performances. Getting some exercise in PE is always fun whether we're running, playing basketball or doing aerobics and stretches. Sometimes we even go on hikes in the park nearby.Finally, the school day ends at 3:30pm. Some days I have extra-curricular activities like joining the art club to work on projects, taking Chinese yo-yo lessons, or practicing for the school play. Other times, I just head home, have a snack, and start on my homework. I have to review what we learned, complete worksheets and assignments, and practice things like multiplication tables or vocabulary words. It can get kind of tedious but I know it's important.In the evenings, we'll have dinner as a family - my mom is such an amazing cook! Her dumplings, wontons and noodle soups are the best. After that, I like to unwind by reading books, playing outside, or watching some TV shows and movies.
