If ambition is to be well regarded, the rewards of ambition

— wealth, distinction, control over one’s destiny — must be

deemed worthy of the sacrifices made on ambition’s behalf. If

the tradition of ambition is to have vitality, it must be widely

shared; and it especially must be highly regarded by people who

are themselves admired, the educated not least among them. In

an odd way, however, it is the educated who have claimed to have

given up on ambition as an ideal. What is odd is that they have

perhaps most benefited from ambition — if not always their own

then that of their parents and grandparents. There is a heavy

note of hypocrisy in this, a case of closing the barn door after

the horses have escaped — with the educated themselves riding

on them.

Certainly people do not seem less interested in suess and

its signs now than formerly. Summer homes, European travel,

BMWs — the locations, place names and name brands may change,

but such items do not seem less in demand today than a decade

or two years ago. What has happened is that people cannot

confess fully to their dreams, as easily and openly as once they could, lest they be thought pushing, acquisitive and vulgar.

Instead, we are treated to fine hypocritical spectacles, which

now more than ever seem in ample supply: the critic of American

materialism with a Southampton summer home; the publisher of

radical books who takes his meals in three-star restaurants;

the journalist advocating participatory democracy in all

phases of life, whose own children are enrolled in private

schools. For such people and many more perhaps not so

exceptional, the proper formulation is, “Sueed at all costs

but avoid appearing ambitious.”

The attacks on ambition are many and e from various angles;

its public defenders are few and unimpressive, where they are

not extremely unattractive. As a result, the support for

ambition as a healthy impulse, a quality to be admired and fixed

in the mind of the young, is probably lower than it has ever

been in the United States. This does not mean that ambition is

at an end, that people no longer feel its stirrings and

promptings, but only that, no longer openly honored, it is less

openly professed. Consequences follow from this, of course,

some of which are that ambition is driven underground, or made

sly. Such, then, is the way things stand: on the left angry critics, on the right stupid supporters, and in the middle, as

usual, the majority of earnest people trying to get on in life.

1. It is generally believed that ambition may be well

regarded if ____.

A. its returns well pensate for the sacrifices

B. it is rewarded with money, fame and power

C. its goals are spiritual rather than material

D. it is shared by the rich and the famous

2. The last sentence of the first paragraph most probably

implies that it is ____.

A. customary of the educated to discard ambition in words

B. too late to check ambition once it has been let out

C. dishonest to deny ambition after the fulfillment of the

goal

D. impractical for the educated to enjoy benefits from

ambition

3. Some people do not openly admit they have ambition

because ____.

A. they think of it as immoral

B. their pursuits are not fame or wealth

C. ambition is not closely related to material benefits

D. they do not want to appear greedy and contemptible

4. From the last paragraph the conclusion can be drawn that

ambition should be maintained ____.

A. secretly and vigorously B. openly and enthusiastically

C. easily and momentarily D. verbally and spiritually

A message in a bottle sent out to sea by a New Hampshire man more

than five decades ago was found 1500 miles away and he’s been

returned to his daughter. The long lost message was discovered by Clint

Buffington of Utah while he was vacationing. Buffington says he found a

soda bottle half-buried in the sand that looked like it had been there

since the beginning of time.

The note inside the bottle said, "Return to 419 Ocean Street and receive

a reward of $150 from Richard and Tina Pierce, owners of the beach

Comber motel.

The motel was owned by the Paula Pierce in 1960. Her father had written

the notes as a joke and had thrown it into the Atlantic Ocean. Buffington

flew to New Hampshire to deliver that message to Pola Pierce. She held

up to her father's promise giving Buffington that reward. But the biggest

You should write at least 120 words but no more than 180 words. (1) As can be seen from the Chinese historical story “Yan Zi’s Visit to the State of Chu”, where Yan Zi’s eloquence and wisdom won the respect for himself and his State of Qi, the importance of developing excellent speaking ability can never be underestimated. (2) Sound speaking skills can help to resolve problems, strengthen mutual understanding and trust, and forge friendships. In my opinion, to improve the speaking ability, first, practice makes perfect. With thorough preparation and practice, we can overcome our nervousness and 2 / 27 十万种考研考证电子书、题库视频学习平台 圣才电子书 speak exceptionally confidently. (3) Second, reading extensively is also conducive to becoming more eloquent and wittier. Being exposed to vocabulary on different topics can help us improve language skills, and more importantly, can increase our emotional intelligence, making us do better in understanding real people and real situations. Third, consider other people’s perspectives before we act or speak. Only after we understand other people’s views can we shoot the arrow at the target. (4) Based on the above analysis, high priority should be given to enhancing the speaking ability, and it can be improved by practicing a lot, reading extensively and multi-perspective thinking. (3) be conducive to有助于。 句首的“Based on the above analysis”是过去分词短语作状语。 Part Ⅲ Reading Comprehension (40 minutes) Section A Directions: In this section, there is a passage with ten blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Please mark the corresponding letter for each item on Answer Sheet 2 with a single line through the centre. Covering a skyscraper with solar panels had never been done before, and the CIS tower was chosen as one of the “10 best green energy projects”. For a long 4 / 27 十万种考研考证电子书、题库视频学习平台 圣才电子书 time after this renovation project, it was the tallest building in the United Kingdom, but it was (31) _____ overtaken by the Millbank Tower. Green buildings like this aren’t (32) _____ cost-efficient for the investor, but it does produce much less pollution than that caused by energy (33) _____ through fossil fuels. As solar panels get (34) _____, the world is likely to see more skyscrapers covered in solar panels, collecting energy much like trees do. Imagine a world where building the tallest skyscraper wasn’t a race of (35) _____, but rather one to collect the most solar energy. 空格前面的“the building’s owners, CIS”为句子主语,后面的“the solar panel company, Solarcentury”为宾语,空格处所填词为句子谓语。 空格所在句子主语为“A vertical solar project”,谓语为“has never been repeated”,空格前为介词短语“on such a large”,空格处应填可数名词单数。
