6、At first my new surroundings were difficult to tolerate.开始时新的环境让我很难忍受。 to tolerate是不定式短语,作方面状语,其逻辑宾语是my new surroundings. 如: The air on Mars is hard to breathe. 火星上的空气难以呼吸。 用法归纳tolerate (1)容许、允许 This kind of behavior will not be tolerated.这种行为是不能被容许的。 The school can’t tolerate cheating on exams. The teacher won’t tolerate any disorder. (2)忍受、容忍(bear=put up with=stand) I don’t know how you tolerate that noise.我不知道你怎么能忍受那样的噪音。 How can you tolerate that rude fellow?你怎么能忍受那个无理的家伙? 人教版高中英语必修五Unit 3课文重点练习详解 LIFE IN THE FUTURE
Unit 3 LIFE IN THE FUTUREF IRST IMPRESSIONS Spacemail:liqiang299A@G reatAdventureSpaceStation. com15/11/3008(earth time) Dear Mum and Dad,I still cannot believe that Iam taking up(=make use of)the prize that I won last year. I have to remindmyself constantly that I am really in AD 3008.(As Iwas)Worried about the journey, I was unsettled (=uneasy/nervous/restless)f or the first few days. As a result, I suffered from “time flag”(时间滞后症). This is similar to the “jet lag” (时差反应)(you get from flying), but it seems you keep getting flashbacks (闪回)from your previous time period.(在你脑子里似乎不断闪现以前的时光). So I was verynervous and uncertain at first, however, my friend and guide, Wang ping, was very understanding(=thoughtful/considerate) and gave some green tablets (=pills) which helped a lot. (As itwas)Well- known for their expertise, his parents’ company, (which was) called “Future Tours”, transported (=sent) mesafely into the future in a time capsule.I can still remember the moment when the space stewardess (air hostess) called us all to the capsule and we climbed in through a small opening. The seats were comfortable and after a calming drink, we felt sleepy (=fall asleep?) and closed our eyes. The capsule began swinging gently sideways(左右) as welay relaxed and dreaming.A few minutes later, the journey was completed and we had arrived. I was still on the earth but one thousand years in the future. What would I find? At first my surrounding s (=environment)were difficult to tolerate(=bear). The air seemed thin, as though its combination of gas had little oxygen left. Hit by(遭遇)(=sufferingfrom/because of)a lack of fresh air,(or: because of the poor air quality) my head ached. Just as I tried to make the necessary adjustment to this new situation, Wang ping appeared. “Put on this mask,” he advi s ed. “It’ll make you feel much better.” He handed it to me and immediately hurried me through to a small room nearby for a rest. I feltbetter in no time (=soon/at once)). Soon I was back on my feet (could stand up) again and following him to collect a hovering carriage (which was) driven by computer. These carriages float above the ground and by bending or pressing down in your seat, you can move swiftly. Wang ping fastened my safety belt and showed me how to use it. Soon I could fly as fast ashim. However, I lost sight of Wangping when we reached what looked like a large market because of too many carriages (which were) flying by in all directions. He was swept up into(卷入) the centre of them. Just at that moment I had a “time lag” flashback(得到一次时间滞后闪回) and saw the area again as it had been in the year AD 2008. I realizedthat I had been transported into the future of what was still my hometown! Then I caught sight of Wangping again and flew after him. Arriving at (=after we arrived at)astrange-looking house, he showed me into a large, bright clean room. It had a green wall, a brown floor and soft lighting. Suddenly the wall moved- it was made of trees! I found laterthat their leaves provided the room with much-needed oxygen. Then Wangping flashed a switch(闪了一下开关) on a computer screen, and a table and some chairs rose from under the floor as if(they were produced)by magic. “Why not sit down and eat a little?” he said. “Y ou may found this difficult as it is your first time travel trip. Just relax, since there is nothing (thathas been) planned on the timetable today. Tomorrow you’ll be ready for some visits.” Having said this (=After he had said this), he spread some food on the table, and produced a bed from the floor. After he left, I had a brief meal and a hot bath. (As I was)Exhausted, I slid into bed and fell fast asleep.More news later from your loving son,Li QiangI HAVE SEEN AMAZING THINGSMy first visit was to a space station (which/that is) considered the most modern in space. (Itis)Described as an enormous round plate, it spins slowly in space to imitate the pull of the earth’s gravity. Inside wasan exhibition f the mostup-to-date(=recent/latest/new) inventions of the 31st century. A guide (G) showed us around along a moveable path.G: Good morning to all our visitors from 2008. First we’re going to examine(查看) one of the latest forms of communication among our space citizens.(There are) No more typistsworking (=who work) on a typewriter or computer! (省略?)No more postage or postcodes! Messages can now be sent using a “thought pad”(思想仪)(do you know ipad?). You place(=lay/put/set) the metal band over your head, clear your mind(排除杂念), press the sending button, think your message and the next instant it’s sent. It’s stored on the “thoughtpad” of the receiver. It’s quick, efficient and environmentally friendly. The only limitation is if the user does not think his or her message clearly, an unclear message may be sent.(为何用被动?)But we cannot blame the tools for the faults of the user, can we?During the explanation I looked at the pair of small objects (which was)called“thought pads” on a table. They just looked like metal ribbons. So ordinary but so powerful! While I was observin g them, the path moved us on.G: And now ladies and gentlemen, we are in the “environment area”. People used to collect waste in dustbins. Then the rubbish was sent to be buried or burned, am I right? (We nodded.) Well, now there’s a system where the waste is disposed of using the principles of ecology(生态). A giant machine, (which is)always greedy for more, swallow s (n:燕子)all the waste available. The rubbish is turned into several grades (=kinds?classes)of useful material, such as “fertilizer” for the fields and “soil” for deserts. Nothing is wasted, andeverything, even plastic bags, is recycle d. A great idea, isn’t it?I stared at the moving model of the waste machine, (and I was)absorbed by its efficiency. But again we moved on.(look/gaze/stare/glare/pee k/peer: look: 注意或有意识地看;gaze:目不转睛地看;stare:盯着看;glare:用恐吓,凶狠或愤怒的眼光看。

• Once, when speeding up, our jet was swallowed by a thunderstorm, which destroyed our GPS receiver and made us lose sight of the directions. A constantly flashing light showed that our jet was in danger. A steward instantly asked us to put on masks and fasten the safety belts, and then pressed a button to switch on the escaping capsule. It slid sideways out of the opening at once and landed in a desert area safely. Lacking food and tablets, we were nervous and uncertain at first. But we all kept optimistic and made good adjustment to the situation. We swept up the surrounding mud to make our settlement and were back on our feet soon. Finally, guided by the smoke of our crashing jet, some local citizens came by carriages and saved us.

[基础巩固]单句语法填空1.After the explosion the army blocked the surrounding(surround) area and forbad anyone to enter it.2.He did not finish his schooling for lack of money.3.His fluent English and profound knowledge make a deep impression on others.4.The accident caused 3 deaths and 20 got injured, which happened previous to his arrival there.5.How did the accident come about since he drove at a speed of sixty miles per hour?6.For miles around me,there was nothing but a desert, without a single plant or tree in sight.7.Those air conditioners are our best-selling products because they are easy to_handle (handle) and work with little noise.8.The dustman swept up all the fallen leaves on this street yesterday.9.Guided(guide) by the sun, they walked towards their destination through the woods.10.Nowadays people are more concerned about the environment where they live.[能力提升]Ⅰ.阅读理解We can achieve knowledge either actively or passively. We achieve it actively by direct experience, by testing and proving an idea, or by reasoning. We achieve knowledge passively by being told by someone else. Most of the learning that takes place in the classroom and the kind that happens when we watch TV or read newspapers or magazines are passive.Conditioned as we are to passive learning, it's not surprising that we depend on it in our everyday communication with friends and co-workers.Unfortunately, passive learning has a serious problem. It makes us tend to accept what we are told even when it is little more than hearsay and rumor (谣言).Did you ever play the game Rumor? It begins when one person writes down a message but doesn't show it to anyone. Then the person whispers it, word for word,to another person. That person,in turn, whispers it to still another, and so on, through all the people playing the game. The last person writes down the message word for word as he or she hears it.Then the two written statements are compared.Typically, the original message has changed. That's what happens in daily life. The simple fact that people repeat a story in their own words changes the story. Then, too, most people listen imperfectly. And many enjoy adding their owncreative touch to a story, trying to improve on it, stamping it with their personal style.Yet those who hear it think they know. This process is also found among scholars and authors:A statement of opinion by one writer may be re-stated as a fact by another, who may in turn be quoted by yet another, and this process may continue, unless it occurs to someone to question the facts on which the original writer based his opinion or to challenge the interpretation he placed upon those facts.[语篇导读]本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍了被动获得知识所存在的一个严重的问题——被告知的可能是谣言,并用现实生活中简单的事例加以说明。
